(excerpt)
A study was conducted at the Ecology Research Center, Miami University, Butler County, Ohio, during the summer of 1990 to examine the effects of strip intercropping sorghum and soybean on the occurrence of parasitoids and incidence of disease in larvae ofthe green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a sporadic pest of soybeans. The details of the experimental design and results are reported elsewhere (Williams et al. 1995).

Temperature Effects On Development Of Three Cereal Aphid Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), N. C. Elliot, J. D. Burd, S. D. Kindler, J. H. Lee
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Temperature is an important climatological variable that influences the biology and ecology of insects. Poor climatic adaptation can limit the effectiveness of parasitic insects in biological control. Two exotic parasites (Syrian Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) and Argentinean Aphidius colemani Viereck) imported for biological control of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and one native parasite (Diaeretiella rapae) were reared in growth chambers in three fluctuating temperature regimes with average daily temperatures of 12, 18, and 24°C. Estimates of temperature thresholds for immature development were 3.3, 3.5, and 2.8°C, for Oklahoman D. rapae, Syrian D. rapae, and …

The Gonotrophic-Age Structure Of A Population Of The Simulium Venustum Complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) In Algonquin Park, Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Alan Hayton
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Eight techniques for the determination of parity and gonotrophic age were assessed for the obligatorily anautogenous blackfly-species complex, Simulium venustum Say. All females could be age-graded by the presence or absence of dilatations on the ovarioles. However, multiple dilatations on a single ovariole were not found and the Polovodova method could not be used to determine the number of completed gonotrophic cycles. Most females could be age-graded by the appearance of the Malpighian tubules, which undergo morphological changes, probably as a result of a bloodmeal. In some cases, the size of the fat body, the presence of retained (relict), mature …

Survey Of Predators Associated With European Red Mite (Panonychus Ulmi; Acari: Tetranychidae) In Ohio Apple Orchards, Celeste Welty
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A survey was conducted to identify the types and relative abundance of predatory arthropods associated with Panonychus ulmi in 21 Ohio apple orchards. Mite populations were sampled by leaf brushing, and insects and spiders were sampled by limb jarring. A state-wide survey was conducted in early July and in late August 1992, and five blocks were evaluated periodically from May until August 1992 at one farm in central Ohio. Predatory mites were detected in only 27% of the blocks surveyed in early July, but in 74% of the blocks surveyed in late August. The ratio of predatory mites to motile …

Observations Of Spring Larvae Of Lycaeides Melissa Samuelis (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) In Central Wisconsin, Ann B. Swengel
The Great Lakes Entomologist
At 36 sampling sites in central Wisconsin 1991-94, 358 spring larvae of the Karner blue (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) ranged from 1.9-17.0 mm in length, with only two >15.0 mm. The number of attending ants (mean 2.0, range 0-25) covaried strongly with larval size, with ants attending all larval instars. Height of wild lupine (Lupinus perennis), this butterfly's only larval food plant, correlated significantly with larval length, and larvae did not appear to hatch too soon in cool springs to have adequate forage. Larval presence and size correlated significantly with five of seven types of feeding signs on the lupines. …

Aquatic Hydrophilidae And Hydraenidae Of Wisconsin (Coleoptera). Ii. Distribution, Habitat, Life Cycle And Identification Of Species Of Hydrobiini And Hydrophilini (Hydrophiudae: Hydrophilinae), William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Nine genera and 30 species of Hydrobiini and 3 genera and 12 species of Hydrophilini were found in Wisconsin, including a new species of Laccobius. Life cycles of all species of lentic Hydrobiini were similar; adults overwinter in terrestrial habitats, return to aquatic sites in spring to mate, oviposit adjacent to these sites, and eventually die. The riparian larvae complete development, pupate, and emerge sometime during the summer depending on the species and habitat, and teneral adults disperse to suitable aquatic habitats. Adults enter overwintering sites in late summer or early autumn. Lotic species of Cymbiodyta have a similar …

It is rare that a publication this complete and well-illustrated is issued on the fauna of a state, and even rarer still, that such a publication is made possible by a collaborative effort of many individuals and several agencies. The Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio is a volume made possible by the efforts of the Ohio Lepidopterists and the Ohio Biological Survey. The Ohio Lepidopterists are for the most part, a number of serious amateurs and professional entomologists that have long desired to provide a check-list of the Ohio Butterfly fauna.
New Larval Host Plant And Behavior Of Chlosyne Gorgone (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Andrew H. Williams
New Larval Host Plant And Behavior Of Chlosyne Gorgone (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), Andrew H. Williams
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
On 31 July 1994, at 1600 hr, an aggregation of eight larvae of Chlosyne gorgone (Hubner) was found at Bush Clover Prairie, in Grant Co., Wisconsin. The larvae were feeding on the upper surface of a leaf of Echinacea pallida (Asteraceae), eating away the top tissue and leaving the translucent lower epidermis in place in an area about 1 cm wide and 4 cm long, oriented length- wise along the lanceolate leaf.

Dendroctonus Valens And Hylastes Porculus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae): Vectors Of Pathogenic Fungi (Ophiostomatales) Associated With Red Pine Decline Disease., Kier D. Klepzig, Eugene B. Smalley, Kenneth F. Raffa
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A study was conducted to determine whether Dendroctonus valens and Hylastes porculus could vector their commonly associated fungi to red pine. Field collected adult D. valens transmitted Leptographium terebrantis, Leptographium procerum and Ophiostoma ips into 45%, 30%, and 5%, respectively of the wounded red pine roots onto which they were caged. Field collected H. porculus transmitted L. terebrantis, L. procerum and O. ips into 55%, 40%, and 5%, respectively, of the wounded red pine roots onto which beetles were caged. None of the control roots, which were mechanically wounded only, were found to contain O. ips, whereas only …

Abundance And Flight Activity Of Some Histeridae, Hydrophilidae And Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) In Southern Quebec, Canada, Claire Levesque, Gilles-Yvon Levesque
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We collected adult beetles with four unbaited flight intercept traps in southern Quebec, from early May through late October, in 1987, 1988 and 1989. We captured a total of 146 Histeridae (9 species), 668 Hydrophilidae (29 species) and 428 Scarabaeidae (25 species), including 25 Holarctic or introduced species in North America, mainly non-forest hydrophilids and scarabs. The Sphaeridiinae and Aphodiinae represented, respectively, 78% of hydrophilid catches and 86% of scarab captures. We suggest that adults of Aphodius prodromus, the most common scarab species, are generalist detritivores. Overwintered adults of this species, mainly females, flew in spring, and new generation adults …

Ground Beetles Of Islands In The Western Basin Of Lake Erie And The Adjacent Mainland (Coleoptera: Carabidae, Including Cicindelini), K. W. Will, F F. Purrington, D. J. Horn
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We report 241 species representing 63 genera of ground beetles from the islands of the western basin of Lake Erie and selected mainland sites from a 1991-93 survey, plus specimens examined in public and private collections, and previously published sources. Most species are generally distributed; however, a restricted population of Sphaeroderus schaumii schaumii we rediscovered is no doubt imperiled. Comparison of wing morphotype frequencies of the Lake Erie island species with mainland populations from studies in Ohio and Michigan support a hypothesis that vagility is of increased import in the islands. Regression and correlation analysis show a positive relationship between …
Aquatic Hydrophilidae And Hydraenidae Of Wisconsin (Coleoptera). I. Introduction, Key To Genera Of Adults, And Distribution, Habitat, Life Cycle, And Identification Of Species Of Helophorus Fabricius, Hydrochus Leach, And Berosus Leach (Hydrophilidae), And Hydraenidae, William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The 3,920 Helophorus (Helophorinae) adults collected in Wisconsin included 16 species, two of which were new species. Helophorus orientalis and H. lacustris predominated. Three types of univoltine life cycles occurred: (1) adults overwinter in terrestrial habitats and larvae complete development in riparian habitats from early summer to early autumn, depending on the species; (2) the same as type 1, except eggs and a few adults overwinter; (3) larvae, pupae, and/or recently emerged adults overwinter and teneral adults occur in aquatic habitats in early spring. Nine species of Hydrochus (Hydrochinae) were found among 6,278 adults, with H. squamifer predominating. All had …

A Bait Attractant Study Of The Nitidulidae (Coleoptera) At Shawnee State Forest In Southern Ohio, R. N. Williams, M. S. Ellis, G. Keeney
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Four baits were tested for efficacy in attracting sap beetles (Nitidulidae) at two sites in the Shawnee State Forest over two collection periods in 1992. Species taken were categorized into three groups: abundant, moderate, and uncommon. At Site 1, nitidulids displayed a strong preference for whole wheat bread dough, followed by fermenting brown sugar, and fermenting malt/molasses solution, and vinegar, respectively. Site 2 collections showed a similar trend to Site 1, but the order of preference was switched for brown sugar and malt/molasses solution. Of the 20 species collected, six species were abundant, seven species were moderate, and seven species …

Effects Of Light And Nutrients On Tomato Plant Compensation For Herbivory By Manduca Sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), Anita K. Gertz, Catherine E. Bach
The Great Lakes Entomologist
This preliminary study examined how two resources (light and nutrients) influence the ability of tomato plants to show growth compensation for defoliation by the tobacco homworm (Manduca sexta). Growth rate and biomass of plants grown under high and low levels of light and nutrients, and exposed to 4 levels of defoliation by Manduca sexta were measured. Nutrients affected plant growth rate much more strongly than did light. Light and nutrients, however, each influenced how herbivory affected plant growth. Defoliation significantly decreased growth rate only under conditions of low light and high nutrients. Biomass, on the other hand. was low …

Relationships Of The Genera Acanthametropus, Analetris, And Siphluriscus, And Re-Evaluation Of Their Higher Classification (Ephemeroptera: Pisciforma), W. P. Mccafferty, T-Q. Wang
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The historical higher classification of the genera Acanthametropus Tshernova, Analetris Edmunds, and Siphluriscus Ulmer is reviewed. The first comprehensive generic description of Siphluriscus is given, and first figures of wings are provided. A cladistic analysis of adult and larval characters of Acanthametropus and Analetris. and adult characters of Siphluriscus reveal a close relationship between the former two genera, which represent a well-defined clade based on five identified synapomorphies; however, Siphluriscus, which has been classified with them in the past, does not share any apomorphies with them but instead shares apomorphies with the genera of Siphlonuridae sensu stricto. Acanthametropus …

Biology Of The Genus Hemileuca (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) In Michigan, Brian G. Scholtens, Warren H. Wagner Jr.
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The habitats and host plants of buckmoths (Hemileuca: Saturniidae: Hernileucinae) in Michigan are described and compared to those of the three species known from eastern North America, H. maia, H. nevadensls, and H. lucina. Michigan populations show variation in host plant and habitat use spanning the entire range of all three species. The presence of transitional phenotypes and the host plant and habitat data suggest that Michigan populations are a single, variable species. These things combined with the intermediate geographical location of Michigan's populations call into question the taxonomic distinctness of the three eastern buckmoth species.
Parasitism Of Cranberry Fruitworm (Acrobasis Vaccinii; Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) By Endemic Or Released Trichogramma Pretiosum (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), Dave Simser
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Two levels of commercially-reared Trichogramma pretiosum were released during the oviposition period of the cranberry fruitworm (Aerobasis vaccinii) in eight Massachusetts (U.S.A.) cranberry bog sites. Release levels of 4.8 X 105 T. pretiosum per ha or 1.9 X 106 T. pretiosum per ha were made at 3-5 day intervals, with a total of nine releases. Parasitism was estimated by collecting cranberry fruits and examining them for the presence of A. vaccinii eggs and T. pretiosum. Eggs were classified as unhatched, hatched, parasitized or emegent parasite. Collections of cranberries from four 'neglected' bog sites (not currently under cultivation) …

Swarming And Mating In Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae), Stephen M. Smith, Randy M. Gadawski
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Male Aedes provocans formed canopy-level linear swarms in association with prominent trees along hedgerows or convex prominences along woodlot margins. Males oriented along the east-west or north-south axis of the swarm site and flew continuously in alternating directions along the longitudinal axis of the swarm. Swarming began shortly before (mean=-0.78 crep) and ended after sunset (mean=0.81 crep). The time of onset of swarming was more variable than the time of cessation; on 3 of 5 occasions, swarming stopped abruptly at 0.94 crep, about 2 minutes before the end of civil twilight. Swarming began 4 d after the onset of emergence …
Effects Of Ascorbic Acid Deficiencies On Larvae Of Lymantria Dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), Richard L. Lindroth, Anthony P. Weiss
Effects Of Ascorbic Acid Deficiencies On Larvae Of Lymantria Dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), Richard L. Lindroth, Anthony P. Weiss
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We assessed the effects of ascorbic acid and total vitamin deficiencies on growth, food processing efficiencies and survival of larval gypsy moths. Artificial diet lacking ascorbic acid did not alter performance of fourth instars, whereas diet lacking a total vitamin mix margmally reduced growth. All vita- min deficient diets substantially reduced survival of fourth-fifth instars. Mortality occurred primarily during molting periods. providing further evidence of the putative role of ascorbic acid in cuticle formation.

Parasitism, Adult Emergence, Sex Ratio, And Size Of Aphidius Colemani (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) On Several Aphid Species, N. C. Elliott, B. W. French, J. D. Burd, S. D. Kindler, D. K. Reed
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Aphidius colemani Viereck parasitizes several economically important aphid pests of small grain crops including the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum and the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. The ability of A. colemani to switch from S. graminum to several species of aphids common to agricultural and associated non-agricultural ecosystems in the Great Plains, and the effects of host-change on several biological parameters that influence population growth rate were determined. Female A. colemani parasitized and developed to adulthood in nine of 14 aphid species to which they were exposed in the laboratory. All small grain feeding aphids except Sipha flava were parasitized. …

Extracting Additional Information From Biotic Index Samples, Richard A. Lillie, Roger A. Schlesser
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Macroinvertebrates were collected from a small midwestern stream over a 3-year period as part of a non-point source pollution study. Temporal and spatial variability in standard biotic index values (BIs) were computed and compared with variability expressed by a series of additional community measurements, including the mean tolerance value of all taxa present in a sample, irrespective of the numerical abundance of individual taxa. The mean tolerance value exhibited lower spatial and temporal variability than the standard BI; therefore, mean tolerance values may be useful in estimating a stream's long-term ambient water quality and its recovery potential. Computations of additional …

Straw Itch Mite, Pyemotes Tritici, Infestation In Brome Seed Related To Acute Dermatitis In Michigan Granary Workers, Edward D. Walker, Douglas A. Landis
The Great Lakes Entomologist
An infestation of Pyemotes tritici, the straw itch mite, apparently caused dermatitis on the arms and trunks of four workers in south-central Michigan who had unloaded a shipment of brome seed bags. Sampling of bag surfaces and contents indicated that mites occurred inside and on the surface of brome seed bags, but not in bags of other seed present at the site. One bag of fescue in contact with brome seed bags had mites on its surface. Pyemotes tritici densities on the brome seed bags ranged from 0.7 -5.6 per cm , while infestations in brome seed ranged from …

The Age Structure Of A Population Of Aedes Provocans (Diptera: Culicidae) In Southwestern Ontario, Stephen M. Smith, Richard M. Kurtz
The Great Lakes Entomologist
In a previous paper it was shown that an eastern-Ontario population of the early-spring mosquito Aedes provocans had an atypical age structure: the adult-female population aged rapidly and synchronously, achieving an advanced gonotrophic age in an unusually brief period of time. The present study examined the age structure of Ae. provocans near Waterloo, in south-western Ontario, at a site at which adult emergence occurred over a wider, more variable period and at which the preferred nectar sources for young adults were much less abundant. In Waterloo, the adult-female population aged more slowly and much less synchronously than in eastern Ontario. …

Prediction Models For Flight Activity Of The Cranberry Girdler (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Wisconsin, Stephen D. Cockfield, Daniel L. Mahr
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Cranberry girdler, Chrysoteuchia topiaria, was monitored with pheromone traps in Wisconsin cranberry farms. Cumulative 50% capture was related to degree-days after first catch using air or soil temperature. An air temperature of O°C and soil temperature of 2°C were chosen as base temperatures for calculation of degree-days because they yielded estimates with the lowest coefficients of variation. Weibull functions were fitted to the relation- ship between cumulative percent capture and time or degree-days after first trap catch using air or soil temperatures. The models that predicted the date of 50% capture were evaluated with data from two other farms. …

Seasonal Patterns Of Flight And Attack Of Maple Saplings By The Ambrosia Beetle Corthylus Punctatissimus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) In Central Michigan, Stephen W. Larsen, Carol L. Howell, Kurt J. Densmore, Richard A. Roeper
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Window traps with ethanol were used to observe seasonal flight patterns of Corthylus punctatissimus in central Michigan. Flights peaked in early July with a second peak seven weeks later in late August. Similarly, wilting of attacked maple (Acer) saplings began to appear a week after initial Corthylus flights, and showed twopeaks, one in mid-July and again with another peak, seven weeks later, in early September. The second peak of activity is presumably from reemerged adults, and not a second generation.

Feeding Patterns And Attachment Ability Of Altica Subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) On Sand-Dune Willow, Aron J. Gannon, Catherine E. Bach, Glenn K. Walker
The Great Lakes Entomologist
To investigate feeding patterns of a specialist herbivore, Altica subplicata, larvae and adults were caged separately on host plants, Salix cordata, and leaf damage was estimated. Young, relatively more pubescent leaves near the tops of the shoots were consumed more than older leaves. Larvae clearly preferred the young, pubescent leaves and avoided the oldest leaves. Adults showed a stronger preference for the first five young leaves, but amount of consumption did not differ among the older leaves.
Attachment ability on smooth and pubescent leaves was examined as a possible factor influencing feeding patterns. Scanning electron microscopy of tarsal …
