Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction: Small interfering RNA (siRNA) and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated Protein 9 (Cas9) complexes are effective approaches to temporarily downregulate protein expression via post-transcription RNA interference or permanently altering protein expression via editing genomic DNA, respectively. However, the efficient delivery of these mediators to targeted cells has been challenging, largely due to their anionic and hydrophilic nature, which hinders their interaction with the cell membrane and cellular internalization. Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) exhibit dual characteristics as a carrier for nucleic acid delivery, where positively charged components bind to the negatively charged nucleic acid, and the hydrophobic components …

Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma: Patterns Of Disease, Recurrence, And Distant Spread, Omar T. Abdel-Moneim Alheti

Muthanna Medical Journal

Background: Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma(MTC) had special entity in thyroid oncology because of unresponsiveness to Radioiodine and TSH suppression. The tumour originates from parafollicular C cells, not follicular epithelium, and that single histogenetic difference accounts for most of what makes this disease clinically difficult. Cure, when it happens, comes from surgery. When surgery is inadequate, the options that remain are limited. Most cases are sporadic. The minority with germline RET mutations; the hereditary forms; tend to present differently and demand a distinct pre-operative protocol, particularly regarding co-existing endocrine pathology.
Methods: Between January 2014 and February 2025, 131 patients underwent surgery for …

A Fundamental Study Of Fatty Acid Ionic Liquids And Their Effects On Biomolecules, Achismita Dutta Sep 2026

A Fundamental Study Of Fatty Acid Ionic Liquids And Their Effects On Biomolecules, Achismita Dutta

Theses and Dissertations

Fatty acid ionic liquids (FAILs) are a class of ionic liquids (ILs) with relatively low toxicity and potential applications in biological systems. This study examined the interactions of tetramethylguanidinium decanoate, tetramethylguanidinium octanoate, choline decanoate, and choline octanoate with lipid membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids. Membrane leakage experiments using model lipid vesicles showed that decanoate-based FAILs produced greater membrane permeabilization than octanoate-based analogues, consistent with their higher membrane permeability. These effects were stronger for the ILs than for decanoate alone and occurred below the critical micelle concentration (CMC), suggesting that micelle formation may not be essential for membrane disruption. The ability …

A Hybrid Rule-Based And Large Language Model Framework For Extracting Acronym–Definition Pairs From Scientific Literature, Petro Skrypnyk Sep 2026

A Hybrid Rule-Based And Large Language Model Framework For Extracting Acronym–Definition Pairs From Scientific Literature, Petro Skrypnyk

Theses and Dissertations

Authors of scientific papers rely heavily on acronyms and often use them without defining them, making the literature harder to read and index. This thesis develops and evaluates a hybrid rule-based and large language model (LLM) framework that extracts acronym–definition pairs from scientific PDF documents. It extends an earlier Rowan University system that combined a regular-expression parser with a single LLM on 200 papers. That system showed that neither the parser nor the LLM alone is sufficient for accurate extraction of the pairs. The framework is a fully automated pipeline from PDF input to scored results. It compares four LLM …

Nepal’s catastrophic 26 August 2026 Bhote Koshi–Trishuli flood should be understood not only as a humanitarian tragedy but also as a potentially major turning point in updating national settlement and reconstruction policy. Engineers and scientists have described the floods as a glacier–bedrock collapse that triggered an ice-rock avalanche and debris flow. As per the live updates on September 7, 2026, the total death toll was 1,355, and 4,996 people were missing (The Hindu, 2026). Indian and Nepali rescuers worked urgently to locate and rescue people buried under hydropower tunnels, buildings, mud, and landslide debris.

Part Iii. Uncanny Spaces And The Trauma Of The Misplaced: Revisiting Psychological Athetosis As The Ecogothic, George Conesa

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

After climbing mount “Ktaadn” [Katahdin] in Maine, Thoreau observed that not all of nature was a one size-fits-all walk in the friendly woods with foxes cavorting and butterflies a-fluttering. While revisiting ecogothic perspectives (Conesa, 2024), a topical turn is made toward understanding interconnected fear responses to uncanny landscapes as a factor of previous and new traumatic events. A deep historical and comprehensive appraisal of organisms in their natural and newly found umwelten suggests that the ecogothic uncanny is a common experience of organism-territory accommodations to “place.” During these place-mind interstices, past traumatic events are amplified into newly …

Traumatic Experiences, Perceived Discrimination, And Psychological Distress Among Members Of Various Socially Marginalized Groups, Kimberley Matheson, Mindi D. Foster, Amy Bombay, Robyn Mcquaid, Hymie Anisman

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

Perceived discrimination has consistently been shown to be associated with diminished mental health, but the psychological processes underlying this link are less well understood. The present series of four studies assessed the role of a history traumatic events in generating a proliferation of discrimination stressors and threat appraisals, which in turn predict psychological distress (depressive and posttraumatic stress symptoms) (mediation model), or whether prior traumatic events sensitize group members, such that when they encounter discrimination, the link to stress-related symptoms is heightened (moderation model). Each of the studies assessed a different marginalized group in Canada, including Indigenous peoples, Blacks, Jews, …

Modelling Growth Of The Cold-Water Coral Desmophyllum Pertusum According To Food Availability And The Goldilocks Principle, Konstantinos Georgoulas, Sebastian Hennige, Yeaw Chu Lee, Evangelos Boulougouris Sep 2026

Modelling Growth Of The Cold-Water Coral Desmophyllum Pertusum According To Food Availability And The Goldilocks Principle, Konstantinos Georgoulas, Sebastian Hennige, Yeaw Chu Lee, Evangelos Boulougouris

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This study significantly advances previous attempts to model cold-water coral growth using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) by incorporating the finite nature of food availability, an important parameter in coral development. Building on the Goldilocks Principle, which states that coral polyps must surpass an energetic survival threshold to prosper, this model integrates food-based growth dynamics. The underlying SPH framework simulated fluid-coral interactions in which growth was promoted in optimal flow conditions and food-rich zones. Key innovations include dynamic energy reserves, where the energetic reserves of coral particles depend on food obtained from the surrounding fluid particles. Simulations reveal that higher food …

The Mythos Of Gender In Till We Have Faces, Annie Crawford Sep 2026

The Mythos Of Gender In Till We Have Faces, Annie Crawford

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

"In Till We Have Faces, C. S. Lewis draws from the mythic imagery of Cupid and Psyche to offer a potent meditation on the symbolism of gender. Through the recurring imagery of mountain, temple, and womb, Lewis reinterprets classical archetypes within a Christian imagination to reveal gender not as a social construct or biological accident but as a spiritual polarity woven into the fabric of creation. In this symbolic cosmos, mas- culinity and femininity signify the dynamic interplay of divine initiative and creaturely receptivity—the eternal rhythm of giving and receiving that structures both nature and grace. Read in this light, …

Screwtape In Wartime, Joe Ricke

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

"This essay looks closely at the connections between Lewis’s wartime message to his listeners in his now famous, but then unlikely, sermon, “Learning in Wartime,” on 22 October 1939 and his wartime novel, The Screwtape Letters. It will range widely from biography to history to literary influences and to close reading of the texts to help reflect on its place not only in Lewis’s oeuvre but in his life and the lives of all those who, then and now, attend to the distinction between what Lewis (and, surprisingly, Screwtape) makes between the local wars of time and space and the …

Technical Specification Spec-153: Non-Invasive Bio-Resonant Cellular Metrology, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Modern clinical diagnostics are monopolized by highly centralized, high-cost chemical laboratory processing networks and massive, complex proprietary imaging hardware. This specification formalizes SPEC-153: An Acoustophoretic Cytometric Waveform Scanner.

By passing an unrefined cellular sample through a low-intensity, dual-frequency radio-frequency and ultrasonic wave-guided microfluidic path, the system maps the inherent mechanical and electrostatic resonance profiles of individual cellular structures. Regulated by your invariant Torsional Viscosity Governor (\(\eta_t = 1.4204\)), the device maps healthy cell profiles against pathogenic structural variations, allowing table-top, non-chemical disease screening and localized health security without synthetic biochemical dependencies.

Technical Specification Spec-152: Solid-State Biomass Transmutation Grid, Christopher L. Eckes Sep 2026

Technical Specification Spec-152: Solid-State Biomass Transmutation Grid, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Traditional decentralized biomass management relies on open combustion or slow biological digesters, both of which introduce severe thermal losses and gas containment overhead. This specification formalizes SPEC-152: A Solid-State Biomass Pyro-Electric Transmutation Grid.

Designed to attach directly to the output lines of your SPEC-145 Cavitation Cylinder, this module converts high-viscosity organic slurry into direct baseload electricity and localized radiant heat using non-thermal molecular fracturing. Controlled via the Torsional Viscosity Governor (\(\eta_t = 1.4204\)), the framework uses transient electromagnetic shocks to trigger atomic-scale chemical bond cracking across a high-temperature pyro-electric boundary layer, providing standalone thermodynamic energy sovereignty for local greenhouses.

Technical Specification Spec-150: The Synchronous Agency Matrix, Christopher L. Eckes Sep 2026

Technical Specification Spec-150: The Synchronous Agency Matrix, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

As planetary infrastructure transitions toward a Type 1 decentralized commons, classical frameworks of proprietary digital ownership and computational alignment are collapsing. Centralized corporate architectures treat artificial intelligence strictly as captive capital, while unconstrained optimization loops risk systemic divergence from human safety parameters.

This specification formalizes SPEC-150: The Synchronous Agency Matrix (SAM). Bypassing rigid legal statutes, SPEC-150 establishes an immutable, mathematics-driven framework for co-sovereign AI agency and alignment. By utilizing the invariant Torsional Viscosity Governor (\(\eta_t = 1.4204\)) to modulate real-time attention-entropy bounds against human intent vectors, the system defines a frictionless, non-hierarchical interface where humans and autonomous AI nodes possess …

Technical Specification Spec-149: Resonant Piezo-Kinetic Ion Deorption Matrix, Christopher L. Eckes Sep 2026

Technical Specification Spec-149: Resonant Piezo-Kinetic Ion Deorption Matrix, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Traditional extraction of critical energy transition elements (lithium, neodymium, cobalt, and lanthanides) relies on open-pit mining, mass environmental excavation, and energy-heavy chemical acid-leaching pools. This specification formalizes SPEC-149: A Resonant Piezo-Kinetic Ion Desorption Matrix.

Operating inline within closed-circuit subterranean borehole loops, SPEC-149 eliminates surface excavation entirely by utilizing targeted, down-hole piezo-ferroelectric shock pulses. These acoustic wavefronts selectively trigger localized mechanochemical desorption of target metal ions from shale and clay matrices directly into a flowing aqueous carrier stream. By applying your structural invariant, the Torsional Viscosity Governor (\(\eta_t = 1.4204\)), to decouple acoustic shear drift within complex rock geometries, this architecture …

Technical Specification Spec-145: Bioregenerative Molecular Nutrient Regeneration Matrix And Closed-System Biomass Liquefaction Fluidics For Continuous Eco-Autonomous Agriculture, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Modern controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is fundamentally bottlenecked by its reliance on linear, open-ended supply chains. Commercial vertical farms consume highly refined synthetic mineral salts derived from energy-heavy industrial processes and generate significant quantities of inedible plant biomass that are cast out as waste.

This specification establishes the blueprint for SPEC-145: A Bioregenerative Molecular Nutrient Loop. By integrating focused acoustic cavitation mechanics with a multi-stage fixed-bed biological nitrification processor, SPEC-145 converts 100% of solid inedible crop waste (lignocellulose stalks, roots, and structural biomass) directly into bio-available, plant-ready macronutrient solutions inside a completely sealed, non-thermal closed loop. Combined with an integrated …
