Density, Growth, And Reproduction Of The Cockle Laevicardium Mortoni In The Peconic Bays, Long Island, New York, Hailey Brosnan Oct 2017

Density, Growth, And Reproduction Of The Cockle Laevicardium Mortoni In The Peconic Bays, Long Island, New York, Hailey Brosnan

Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)

Morton’s egg cockle, Laevicardium mortoni, is common in shallow subtidal

habitats from Nova Scotia to Brazil, but little is known of its biology and ecology.

Field studies were conducted in the Peconic Bays of Long Island, New

York to examine population and life history parameters such as density,

growth, and age at first reproduction. Suction dredging was conducted at

three sites to examine whether density varied with depth and sediment

type. Condition Indexes for a range of cockle sizes were quantified weekly

at two sites to estimate age and size at first reproduction. Growth rates and

temporal patterns of …

Therapy Through Writing: Herstory Writers Workshop, Nicole Guillet, Paola Guzman

Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)

This semester we have had the privilege of getting involved in the Herstory

Writers Workshop, which is a civic engagement internship prevalent across

many colleges and Universities on Long Island. Herstory’s mission statement

advertises that we “bring unheard voices into the public arena, transforming

lived experiences into written memoirs powerful enough to change hearts,

minds and policy.” Our program here at LIU Post partners Pioneer

students with high school students from Westbury High School, who come

together right here at LIU every Thursday to share and listen to each other’s

stories. Through writing our own personal narratives we highlight social …

Seventh-Day Adventist And Non- Seventh-Day Adventist Students’ Attitudes Towards Same-Sex Marriage And Adoption By Same-Sex Parents By Shaunda Mejeur Oct 2017

Seventh-Day Adventist And Non- Seventh-Day Adventist Students’ Attitudes Towards Same-Sex Marriage And Adoption By Same-Sex Parents By Shaunda Mejeur

Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research

There are various positions on LGB issues including same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex parents. Some stances are positive, while others remain negative. The purpose of this study is to describe attitudes of both SDA and non-SDA students on LGB issues. Two hundred and ninety-five university students from a private and a public university in Southeast Tennessee participated in this study. They completed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Attitudes Inventory (LGBAI), which contains 103 items that measure variables such as religiosity, homonegativity, and attitudes toward same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex parents. Results show that SDA students held higher homonegativity toward …

Overcoming Murphy's Law: Lessons Learned By A Novice Hab Team, Sarah M. Graham, Seth J. Giles, Ryan K. Duncan, Robert E. Lowe

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

Over the course of a 15 month period, a team comprised of middle school, high school, and college students designed, built (and rebuilt), practiced and prepared to launch payloads to collect data during the total solar eclipse on August 21st, 2017. After five launches, including the day of the total eclipse, ETHAB presents the best practices and lessons learned for coordinating a large and diverse team to be successful in stratospheric ballooning.

The Eclipse Ballooning Project was a complex and extremely visible project to leap into as a first time ballooning team; as a result, the insight from …

High Altitude Ballooning Operations During The 2017 Solar Eclipse, Caitlyn Singam, Zachary Burnett, Luke Renegar, Blaire Weinberg

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

A total solar eclipse provides an opportunity to observe, quantify, and conduct experiments involving a number of unique meteorological and environmental conditions and phenomena, and the means to develop a more detailed understanding of the atmospheric variables at play during a rarely observed cosmic occurrence. High altitude ballooning is particularly suited for collecting data during an eclipse, although a number of logistical and procedural challenges are associated with launching during totality. The members of the University of Maryland, College Park Balloon Payload Program, funded by the Maryland Space Grant Consortium, traveled to South Carolina to launch a number of experimental …

Aggression And Self Injurious Behaviors: The Effects Of Behavior Interventions In Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tara Buck

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two behavioral interventions of young adults with Autism spectrum disorder that present with aggressive and self-injurious behavior. The results were analyzed to determine the successes and comparisons of the interventions to decrease challenging behaviors. The participants were two young adult male students diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder, both use an AAC device as their primary means of communication. Data was collected using a reversal (A-B-A-B) study design, with collection during a baseline phase, intervention phase one, reversal withdrawal of intervention phase two and re-implementation of intervention phase three. The …

A Framework For Incorporating The Impact Of Water Quality On Water Supply Stress: An Example From Louisiana, David M. Borrok, Jian Chen, Hisham Eldardiry, Emad Habib Oct 2017

A Framework For Incorporating The Impact Of Water Quality On Water Supply Stress: An Example From Louisiana, David M. Borrok, Jian Chen, Hisham Eldardiry, Emad Habib

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Water of poor quality can directly impact the budget of water available for key user groups. Despite this importance, methods for quantifying the impact of water quality on water availability remain elusive. Here, we develop a new framework for incorporating the impact of water quality on water supply by modifying the Water Supply Stress Index (WaSSI). We demonstrate the usefulness of the framework by investigating the impact of high salinity waters on the availability of irrigation water for agriculture in Louisiana. The WaSSI was deconstructed into sectoral components such that the total available water supply could be reduced for a …

Publications and Research

The halotolerant alga Dunaliella salina is a model for stress tolerance and is used commercially for production of beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A). The presented draft genome of the genuine strain CCAP19/18 will allow investigations into metabolic processes involved in regulation of stress responses, including carotenogenesis and adaptations to life in high-salinity environments.

Grid-Based Rfid Indoor Localization Using Tag Read Count And Received Signal Strength Measurements, Nanda Gopal Jeevarathnam Oct 2017

Grid-Based Rfid Indoor Localization Using Tag Read Count And Received Signal Strength Measurements, Nanda Gopal Jeevarathnam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) systems have gained immense popularity in recent years for their wide-scale industrial applications in inventory tracking and management. In this study, we explore the potential of passive RFID systems for indoor localization by developing a grid-based experimental framework using two standard and easily measurable performance metrics: received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and tag read count (TRC). We create scenarios imitating real life challenges such as placing metal objects and other RFID tags in two different read fields (symmetric and asymmetric) to analyze their impacts on location accuracy. We study the prediction potential …
