Brief Of Amici Curiae Scholars Of The Constitutional Rights And Interests Of Children In Support Of Respondents In Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd, Et Al V. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Catherine E. Smith, Lauren Fontana, Tanya Washington, Barbara Bennett Woodhouse Jan 2017

Smith, Lauren Fontana, Tanya Washington, Barbara Bennett Woodhouse

Faculty Scholarship

Masterpiece Cakeshop LTD, et al v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission is about much more than a wedding cake. It is about the rightful place of LGBT people and their families in the commercial and public sphere. In fact, children are already bearing the brunt of exclusionary practices in the public marketplace because of their relationship to or association with their LGBT parents. In Michigan, a pediatrician refused to treat an infant based solely on the fact that the child had lesbian mothers. In Kentucky, a judge refused to hear adoption cases of children involving LGBT adoptive-parents-to-be. In Tennessee, a nondenominational …

Participant Perspectives On Housing And Landlords In A Canadian Housing First Program, Timothy Macleod Jan 2017

Participant Perspectives On Housing And Landlords In A Canadian Housing First Program, Timothy Macleod

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based approach to housing and services for adults who are chronically homeless and have a psychiatric disability. Research has demonstrated that HF rapidly ends homelessness but less in known about how participants experience their housing environments and landlords. This study is a part of a larger Canadian randomized field trial of HF that included qualitative interviews with participants in five cities. The narratives of 127 participants randomized to HF (n=82) or Treatment as Usual (TAU, n=45) were collected with regard to their perceptions of housing and landlords. Participant narratives were analyzed using thematic analysis and …

Using Rainbow Trout Cell Lines As A Model For Understanding The Innate Anti-Fv3 Immune Response, Graeme Robert Jones Lisser Jan 2017

Using Rainbow Trout Cell Lines As A Model For Understanding The Innate Anti-Fv3 Immune Response, Graeme Robert Jones Lisser

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Ranavirus infections are on the rise and have been implicated in numerous species die-offs across the globe. Frog virus 3 (FV3) is the type-species of the genus, yet the immune mechanisms governing susceptibility remain poorly understood. Arguably the most important immune response to infection is the type I interferon (IFN) response. Type I IFNs trigger an “antiviral state” in host cells via the production of numerous interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that act to inhibit virus replication in various way, including the induction of apoptosis. Apoptosis is an important antiviral defense mechanism to limit virus replication within infected cells. This study employed …

Dsrna Sensing In Fish Cells: Using Chse-214 As A Model For The Study Of Class A Scavenger Receptors, Andrea Monjo Jan 2017

Dsrna Sensing In Fish Cells: Using Chse-214 As A Model For The Study Of Class A Scavenger Receptors, Andrea Monjo

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

When infecting cells, most viruses produce dsRNA molecules at some point in their replicative cycle. When an infection results in cell lysis, these molecules are released into the extracellular space. Class A scavenger receptors (SR-As) on the surface of animal cells bind extracellular dsRNA and bring it into the cell where dsRNA triggers an innate immune response, enabling the cell to protect itself from an impending virus infection. Very few cells are unable to bind and respond to extracellular dsRNA, thus cell-based assays for studying extracellular dsRNA sensing via SR-As have been limited. CHSE-214 cells are a promising model for …

Reproductive Characterization Of Walleye (Sander Vitreus) And Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) In Tathlina Lake, Nt, Grant M. Harrison Mr

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Tathlina Lake, NT is an ecologically and culturally important lake to the Ka’a’gee Tu First Nation and supports a small commercial fishery for walleye (Sander vitreus) and a subsistence fishery for lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). The community is concerned about existing fluctuations in the fish populations. They are also concerned with environmental pressures, including potential future oil and gas development in the near-by Cameron Hills and climate change, and desires to institute long-range biomonitoring in the lake. Male and female adult walleye and lake whitefish, in pre- and post-spawning conditions, were collected biannually in March and …

In Search Of Lost Selves: Memory And Subjectivity In Transnational Art Cinema, Anders J. Bergstrom Jan 2017

In Search Of Lost Selves: Memory And Subjectivity In Transnational Art Cinema, Anders J. Bergstrom

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation begins from the position that cinema’s ongoing persistence as a specific operation of subjective perception is intimately related to the questions of self and memory it raises. Even as digitization and global capitalism have ostensibly led to the creation of a “post-cinematic” culture, cinematic forms and practices remain inextricably related to the larger (often unacknowledged) metaphysical concerns of the cultures and social contexts in which they continue to signify. These concerns—which include beliefs in perceptual realism, the relations between images and the past, and notions of selfhood—shape both the production and consumption of cinema as a tool which …

Size And Shape Control In Metal Nanoparticles And Nanocomposites, Tomendro Subedi Jan 2017

Size And Shape Control In Metal Nanoparticles And Nanocomposites, Tomendro Subedi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis describes major findings on the shape transformation of the precursor silver decahedral nanoparticles (AgDeNPs) with pentagonal symmetry and twin defects into silver pentagonal prism nanoparticles (AgPPNPs) using Br¯ as a shape selective reagent. Silica-encapsulation of the gold-plated AgDeNPs was also carried out forming ordered arrays of silica encapsulated gold-plated AgDeNPs (SiO2@Au@AgDeNPs) of different sizes. At first, synthetic procedures for AgDeNPs (pentagonal bipyramids), silver pentagonal rod nanoparticles (AgPRNPs) and gold-plating of AgDeNPs (Au@AgDeNPs) were optimized. Gold plating enhances the chemical stability of AgDeNPs and preserves the superior plasmonic properties of silver. This thesis deals with the transformation …

Exclusion From Rights Through Extra-Territoriality At Home: The Case Of Paris Roissy-Charles De Gaulle Airport's Waiting Zone, Pauline Gj Maillet Jan 2017

Exclusion From Rights Through Extra-Territoriality At Home: The Case Of Paris Roissy-Charles De Gaulle Airport's Waiting Zone, Pauline Gj Maillet

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this dissertation I argue that, since the 1980s, French airports have been designed to exclude people from legal, human and refugee rights. The particular space where this happens has been successively called “international zone”, “transit zone” and “waiting zone” and its scope has been significantly extended overtime. I contend that French authorities have used the concept of extra-territoriality in concert with the material design of the airport to sustain exclusion. While this research focuses on France, findings bear relevance to the global governance of migrants and refugees. The French case epitomizes how states creatively use the law (or absence …

A Comprehensive Study Of Personal And Social Information Use In Female Brown-Headed Cowbirds, Molothrus Ater, Hayden Davies, David J. White Jan 2017

A Comprehensive Study Of Personal And Social Information Use In Female Brown-Headed Cowbirds, Molothrus Ater, Hayden Davies, David J. White

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Brood parasites face considerable cognitive challenges when locating and selecting host nests for their young. One aspect of this challenge is determining how to use different sources of information to make decisions regarding the quality of a prospective nest. Here we investigate how female-brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, use information when prospecting for nests, and then expand upon this to investigate decisions related to foraging. In chapter 1, we demonstrated female could use social information acquired from observing the nest prospecting patterns of conspecifics to influence their own patterns of nest selection. Furthermore, we found a negative relationship between a …

Three contextual chapters on the history of federal defence research in Canada provide the foundation for a close study of defence research projects pursued and supported by the Canadian government. The dissertation …

Students' Experiences Of The Scent-Free Initiative At The Faculty Of Social Work, Tanya Marie Smith Jan 2017

Students' Experiences Of The Scent-Free Initiative At The Faculty Of Social Work, Tanya Marie Smith

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This research project sought to explore how students experienced the introduction of a scent-free initiative within the Faculty of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University. An intersectional, critical disability approach is used to understand participants' experiences and to identify gaps in implementation, as well as recommendations for future policy development. Working from a transformative paradigm, this study used a mixed methods design, including an online survey and in-person focus groups. Findings indicate that social work students felt well-informed about the initiative, however they did not feel adequately knowledgeable about how to embody the initiative via scent-free practices. Participants expressed stigmatizing …

Natural Organic Matter Characterization And Lead Speciation As Indicators Of Potential Lead Bioavailability In Aquatic Environments, Giselle Cimprich Jan 2017

Natural Organic Matter Characterization And Lead Speciation As Indicators Of Potential Lead Bioavailability In Aquatic Environments, Giselle Cimprich

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Trace metals and natural organic matter (NOM) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. Some trace metals are essential for aquatic life, while other non-essential metals (like lead) can be toxic if present in great enough concentrations. Natural waters contain a combination of inorganic, and organic ligands capable of binding metals. While the chemistry of inorganic Pb species is well understood, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certified K values are readily available, the interactions between metals and organic matter is not so clearly defined. It is important to understand how NOM interacts with metals in the environment, as the …

The Complexity Of Electron Transport: A Study Of Variegation Through Chemical Inhibition Of Plastoquinol Terminal Oxidase (Ptox) In Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacaum), Hillary Peon Jan 2017

The Complexity Of Electron Transport: A Study Of Variegation Through Chemical Inhibition Of Plastoquinol Terminal Oxidase (Ptox) In Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacaum), Hillary Peon

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The photosynthetic electron transport (PET) chain relies on the chlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthetic pathways for pigments that harness light, and protect the photosynthetic apparatus from damage by light. The pigment pathways also connect to the PET chain through electron transfer where the plastoquinol (PQ) pool accepts electrons from phytoene desaturase (PDS) of the carotenoid pathway and the aerobic cyclase (ACS) of the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway. Genetic studies have shown a plastoquinol terminal oxidase (PTOX) protein functions to regulate the redox state of the PQ pool. Without PTOX to maintain balance between the two redox states of the PQ pool it …

Quantifying The Interactions Of Nickel With Marine Dissolved Organic Matter Using Fluorescence, Elissa Dow Jan 2017

Quantifying The Interactions Of Nickel With Marine Dissolved Organic Matter Using Fluorescence, Elissa Dow

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Nickel (Ni) is a versatile metal with an abundance of applications, namely its role in stainless steel, electronics, and batteries, making it a popular choice in industry. Unfortunately, with increasing demand and production comes higher amounts of Ni pollution. Nickel enters ocean waters - either directly or indirectly - and can have profound effects on marine life. Nickel has been established as a toxicant to a variety of aquatic biota, with the divalent cation (Ni2+) thought to be the most bioavailable fraction and thus the most toxic. Having a reliable means of quantifying free Ni ion is pertinent …

Determination Of Silver Binding To Natural Organic Matter Using Ion Selective Electrode, Mona Muhawwis Alshammari Jan 2017

Determination Of Silver Binding To Natural Organic Matter Using Ion Selective Electrode, Mona Muhawwis Alshammari

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Natural organic matter (NOM) is considered an important factor in the protection of the aquatic environments; organic ligands can complex with metals, to decrease their toxicity and bioavailability. NOM is measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in mg C/L. Silver metal can enter into the aquatic environment from natural and anthropogenic sources, and is found in different chemical forms. Free silver ion (Ag+) is considered as the most toxic form of the metal. However, it can form complexes with both inorganic and organic ligands, such as ammonia, chloride, hydroxyl, carbonato, phosphato, and thiol groups. Thiol is the most important ligand …

The Experiences Of Athletes, Parents, And Coaches With The Long-Term Athlete Development Model (Ltad) In Youth Soccer Academies, Kody Watson Jan 2017

The Experiences Of Athletes, Parents, And Coaches With The Long-Term Athlete Development Model (Ltad) In Youth Soccer Academies, Kody Watson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Long-Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) has been developed to allow children the best chance of engaging in lifelong sport and physical activity. The LTAD focuses on long-term development, not short-term success, which allows for the best opportunity of sport participation and optimal sport potential throughout life (Balyi, Way, & Higgs, 2013). Research surrounding the LTAD model has stated that there is a lack of empirical evidence of the model being utilized within sport, as some researchers believe that it is more theoretical than practical (Lloyd & Oliver, 2012). However, even with this criticism of the LTAD model, Canadian sport …

The Effect Of Twist On The Mechanical Properties Of The Intervertebral Disc, Maxine Harvey-Burgess Jan 2017

The Effect Of Twist On The Mechanical Properties Of The Intervertebral Disc, Maxine Harvey-Burgess

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Introduction: Intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation is a common injury to the IVD and a frequent source of low back pain. IVD herniation occurs when the nucleus pulposus migrates through both the inter- and intralamellar matrices of the annulus fibrosus (AF). There are a number of mechanical risk factors associated with herniation, including repetitive flexion and twist. In vivo, twist combined with repetitive flexion has been associated with increased experience of low back pain and herniation. Additionally, in vitro, when repetitive flexion is combined with twist, IVD herniation occurs more easily than repetitive flexion alone. However, the mechanisms behind …

Experiences Of Racialized Service Providers Who Work With Racialized Clients: Functions And Constraints Of Master And Counter-Narratives Of Helping, Racism, And Vicarious Racism, Prapti Giri Jan 2017

Experiences Of Racialized Service Providers Who Work With Racialized Clients: Functions And Constraints Of Master And Counter-Narratives Of Helping, Racism, And Vicarious Racism, Prapti Giri

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

What are the experiences of racialized frontline workers? How do they experience vicarious racism? I interviewed 8 frontline workers who were involved in counseling racialized individuals. The narrative paradigm, constructivist self-development theory (CSDT), and critical race theory (CRT) were the theoretical frames that guided the interviews and data analysis in order to answer these questions. I conducted a structural narrative analysis, which revealed how participants utilized assumptions from master narratives and at other times countered them. Interviewees occasionally stepped outside of the master narrative entirely, for example, by rejecting the categorization of race. According to CSDT, our meanings are determined …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Intervertebral Disc Puncture, Inflammation, And Tissue Mechanics Using A Rat-Tail Model., Brigitte Laird Jan 2017

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Intervertebral Disc Puncture, Inflammation, And Tissue Mechanics Using A Rat-Tail Model., Brigitte Laird

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Introduction: The intervertebral disc (IVD) is composed of the annulus fibrosus (AF), which surrounds and contains the nucleus pulposus (NP). It is hypothesized that when the IVD becomes injured, in the case of IVD herniation, a localized innate immune response is initiated. Although the presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines in injured IVDs has been well documented, the extent to which inflammation affects the mechanical properties of the IVD remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of IVD damage (via puncture) and inflammation (via lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure) on the mechanical and structural properties of the IVD. …

Uncovering The Protological Hermeneutics Of George Mccready Price And Benjamin Warfield, Sergio L. Silva

Dissertations

Problem

The problem this dissertation addresses is the protological hermeneutical impasse between George McCready Price and Benjamin Warfield over whether biblical protology should be interpreted literally or symbolically in response to the evolutionary theory.

Method

To identify, compare, and contrast the protological hermeneutics of George McCready Price and Benjamin Warfield, this dissertation adopts an interdisciplinary methodology that seeks to integrate historical theology, systematic theology, and exegetical-biblical theology.

Conclusions

The protological hermeneutical impasse between George McCready Price and Benjamin Warfield over the interpretation of biblical protology was caused by how they applied their views on epistemology. On the hermeneutical level (where …

Critique Of A Dual-System Model Of Category Learning, C E R Edmunds Jan 2017

Critique Of A Dual-System Model Of Category Learning, C E R Edmunds

School of Psychology Theses

Some researchers have argued that the category learning literature is conclusive: people learn to generalise from past experiences to novel ones using multiple learning systems (Ashby & Maddox, 2011). To the extent that this claim is true, it is due in no small part to work investigating the predictions of the dual-system model COVIS (COmpetition between Verbal and Implicit Systems; Ashby, Alfonso-Reese, Turken, & Waldron, 1998). The work presented here investigates the evidence for this model. In Chapter 1, I describe the main features of the COVIS model and briefly review some of the evidence that supports this model. This …

A Sense Of The Cycling Environment: Felt Experiences Of Infrastructure And Atmospheres, Paul Simpson Jan 2017

A Sense Of The Cycling Environment: Felt Experiences Of Infrastructure And Atmospheres, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper explores how cyclists gain a sense of the environments they move through by considering their felt experiences of the affective atmospheres that emerge in and through their movements. More specifically, the focus falls upon how various forms of transport infrastructure choreograph bodies in their movements through the city and so contributes towards the co-production of various affective atmospheres between differently mobile bodies. Drawing on video interviews with 24 commuter cyclists in Plymouth, UK, the roles that such infrastructures and atmospheres play in shaping the experience of cycling through shared forms of transport space are considered. Based on this, …

The purpose of this study was to discover, develop, evaluate, and implement a supportive singles’ ministry at the Mt. Rubidoux Seventh-day Adventist church by way of planned activities and educative programs designed to serve the needs of singles in that congregation. The study was designed to determine the impact the singles’ ministry has on the church and how to shape the ministry in the future. Although society has viewed singles in different ways, depending on time and place, in traditional societies, women and men who did not marry were viewed as imperfect and lacking. Singles battle with strong expectations …

Novel Use Of Field-Portable-Xrf For The Direct Analysis Of Trace Elements In Marine Macroalgae., Annie Bull, Murray T. Brown, Andrew Turner Jan 2017

Novel Use Of Field-Portable-Xrf For The Direct Analysis Of Trace Elements In Marine Macroalgae., Annie Bull, Murray T. Brown, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Samples of dried marine macroalgae (Fucus serratus, Palmaria palmata and Ulva lactuca) have been analysed for trace elements by a novel, non-destructive approach involving a Niton field-portable-X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) spectrometer configured in a low density plastics mode with thickness correction. Detection limits for a 200-s counting time ranged from <5 μg g(-1) for As and Pb in F. serratus and As in P. palmata to several tens of μg g(-1) for Cd, Sb and Sn in all species tested. Arsenic, Cu, Pb and Zn were detected by the XRF in samples collected from a protected beach (n = 18) and in samples therefrom that had been exposed to additional aqueous elements in combination (n = 72) with concentrations returned (in μg g(-1)) ranging from 3.9 to 39.7 for As, 13.0 to 307 for Cu, 6.1 to 14.7 for Pb and 12.5 to 522 for Zn. Independent measurements of trace elements in the macroalgae by ICP-MS following nitric acid digestion revealed a direct and significant proportionality with concentrations returned by the XRF, with slopes of the XRF-ICP relationships (As = 1.0; Cu = 2.3; Pb = 2.4; Zn = 1.7) that can be used to calibrate the instrument for direct measurements. The approach shows potential for the in situ monitoring of macroalgae in coastal regions that is currently being investigated.
