Terricolous Spiders (Araneae) Of Insecticide-Treated Spruce-Fir Forests In West-Central Maine, Daniel J. Hilburn, Daniel T. Jennings
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Spiders of 12 families, 42 genera, and at least 62 species were captured in linear-pitfall traps placed in insecticide-treated (Sevin-4-Oil®, Dipel 4L ®, Thuricide 16B®) and untreated spruce-fIr forests of west-central Maine. Species richness per family ranged from 1 (Theridiidae, Araneidae, Salticidae) to 19 (Erigonidae). Most trapped species were web-spinners (67.2%); most trapped individuals were hunters (75.2%). Lycosidae accounted for 66.1 % of all (n = 887) captured spiders. Total trapped spiders varied among insecticide treatments, sampling dates, and study sites. However, comparison of mean prespray and postspray trap catches indicated no significant reduction (ANOVA, ANCOVA, P 0.05) in terricolous …

Contarinia baeri is univoltine in Michigan. Adults emerge in spring, and females deposit eggs in small clusters in the sheaths of new-growth pine needles. Larvae hatch shortly thereafter and there are three larval instars. Larval feeding causes the needles to at first droop, discolor, and eventually drop, reducing the quality of Christmas trees and occasionally killing shoots. Larvae overwinter on the ground in cocoons, and pupate in spring. Adults were suppressed (> 75% control) with formulations of Pydrin® (fenvalerate) and Tempo® (cyfluthrin) applied within a week after adult emergence.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Youth In The United States: A Qualitative Systematic Review, Michelle Hampton, Michelle Lieggi
Commercial Sexual Exploitation Of Youth In The United States: A Qualitative Systematic Review, Michelle Hampton, Michelle Lieggi
Faculty Publications
Background:Homeless, runaway, and transgender youth are at high risk for commercial sexual exploitation in the United States. Research examining this phenomenon is growing but requires synthesis to facilitate its use by professionals who serve this population. The purpose of this review was to aggregate the qualitative evidence regarding commercially sexually exploited youth (CSEY) in the United States. Methods:The search included published and unpublished qualitative studies with current or former CSEY who reside in the United States. Results:There were 19 studies included in the review with a total of 795 participants. Eight themes were identified and grouped into three broader categories: experiences that …

In human mitochondria, transcription termination events at a G-quadruplex region near the replication origin are thought to drive replication of mtDNA by generation of an RNA primer. This process is suppressed by a key regulator of mtDNA-the transcription factor TEFM. We determined the structure of an anti-termination complex in which TEFM is bound to transcribing mtRNAP. The structure reveals interactions of the dimeric pseudonuclease core of TEFM with mobile structural elements in mtRNAP and the nucleic acid components of the elongation complex (EC). Binding of TEFM to the DNA forms a downstream "sliding clamp," providing high processivity to the EC. …

Phragmites australis is a cosmopolitan grass and often the dominant species in the ecosystems it inhabits. Due to high intraspecific diversity and phenotypic plasticity, P. australis has an extensive ecological amplitude and a great capacity to acclimate to adverse environmental conditions; it can therefore offer valuable insights into plant responses to global change. Here we review the ecology and ecophysiology of prominent P. australis lineages and their responses to multiple forms of global change. Key findings of our review are that: (1) P. australis lineages are well-adapted to regions of their phylogeographic origin and therefore respond differently to changes in …

Document abstract
Sediment management is a challenge faced by reservoir managers who have several potential options, including dredging, for mitigation of storage capacity lost to sedimentation. As sediment is removed from reservoir storage, potential use of the sediment for socioeconomic or ecological benefit could potentially defray some costs of its removal. Rivers that transport a sandy sediment load will deposit the sand load along a reservoir-headwaters reach where the current of the river slackens progressively as its bed approaches and then descends below the reservoir water level. Given a rare combination of factors, a reservoir deposit of alluvial sand has …

Efficient Pebble Game Algorithms Engineered For Protein Rigidity Applications, Mojtaba Nouri Bygi, Ileana Streinu
Efficient Pebble Game Algorithms Engineered For Protein Rigidity Applications, Mojtaba Nouri Bygi, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Pebble game rigidity analysis is an efficient method for extracting rigidity and flexibility information of biomolecules without performing costly molecular dynamics simulations. The standard algorithm works on a multi-graph associated to a mechanical model constructed from an arbitrary atom-bond network. Motivated by large scale protein flexibility and simulated unfolding applications, we have developed a faster and more robust variation tailored to the specificities of bio-polymers. We describe this new phased pebble game as implemented in the new version of our software Kinari-2.

Use Of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay To Screen For Aflatoxins, Ochratoxin A, And Deoxynivalenol In Dry Pet Foods, Tara A. Okuma, Thu P. Huynh, Rosalee S. Hellberg
Food Science Faculty Articles and Research
The objective of this study was to perform a market survey on dry pet foods using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect total aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), and deoxynivalenol (DON). Pet food products (n = 58) marketed for dogs, cats, birds, and rabbits were tested in duplicate with ELISA, and results above the limit of quantitation were confirmed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). OTA was detected in one product (rabbit food) and AFs were detected in two products (one dog treat and one bird treat). In contrast, DON was detected in the majority (74%) of products …

Pezet, Antoinette, Emily Durgin
Pezet, Antoinette, Emily Durgin
Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
Antoinette Pezet was born in New York April 23, 1937 as William Anthony Pezet. She recognized she was bisexual in her early teens. Her family was accepting of her sexuality very early on. Before enlisted in the military in her early twenties, she married her first wife, Helga. Due to mental health issues, Helga and Antoinette divorced. Antoinette then married her second wife, Emily, and went on to have two children.
It was not until Antoinette was divorced from Emily that she started dressing as a woman. In her early fifties she had a conversation with Jean Vermette that first …
Compact And Wideband Mmic Phase Shifters Using Tunable Active Inductor Loaded All-Pass Networks, David M. Zaiden
Compact And Wideband Mmic Phase Shifters Using Tunable Active Inductor Loaded All-Pass Networks, David M. Zaiden
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the design of monolithically integrated phase shifters at S- and L- frequency bands using a commercially available GaAs process from Triquint. The focus of the design is to operate over a wide bandwidth with full 360° phase shift capability, 50 Ω input/output impedance match and low RMS phase and gain errors. The first version of the design is based on passive all-pass phase shifters integrated with wideband amplifiers to compensate for insertion loss. This design uses a 4-bit system to achieve the required phase shift and each bit consists of 3 sections of all-pass filters designed at …
