For landscape research to function in a democratic landscape governance, it must achieve two things. One, it must integrate stakeholder perspectives at multiple steps of the research process, and two, it must effectively communicate its knowledge and insights. Citizen science can be described as the involvement of the public in the scientific process, through a range of different approaches. We ask what such approaches can bring the landscape research and its stakeholders closer together. We survey the field of citizen science and present a number of typologies of approaches. Next, we introduce three applications of citizen science in the landscape …

Trees, the most successful biological power plants on earth, build and plumb the critical zone (CZ) in ways that we do not yet understand. To encourage exploration of the character and implications of interactions between trees and soil in the CZ, we propose nine hypotheses that can be tested at diverse settings. The hypotheses are roughly divided into those about the architecture (building) and those about the water (plumbing) in the CZ, but the two functions are intertwined. Depending upon one’s disciplinary background, many of the nine hypotheses listed below may appear obviously true or obviously false. (1) Tree roots …
Social Disadvantage And Child Health Among China's Rural-Urban Migrant Households, Yana Vander Meulen Rogers
Social Disadvantage And Child Health Among China's Rural-Urban Migrant Households, Yana Vander Meulen Rogers
Seminars in Local and Global Regional Economies
This talk examines how social disadvantage among rural-urban migrant households in China is associated with the nutritional status of children. The measures of social disadvantage are based on China’s hukou system of household registration – designed to limit domestic migration flows by denying public services in cities to migrants with rural registrations – and on gender bias that may harm women and girls.
Microplastic Concentrations In Crassotrea Gigas: Establishing A Baseline Of Microplastic Contamination In Oregon's Oyster Aquacultures, Mia K. Jauregui
Microplastic Concentrations In Crassotrea Gigas: Establishing A Baseline Of Microplastic Contamination In Oregon's Oyster Aquacultures, Mia K. Jauregui
University Honors Theses
Anthropogenic debris is “found across all habitats in the ocean, including coral reefs, shallow bays, estuaries, the open ocean, and the deep sea” (Rochman et al., 2015). Microplastic pollution is widespread in the marine environment and poses a threat to a variety of organisms, including commercial shellfish grown for human consumption. The aim of this study is to establish a baseline of microplastic evidence in Oregon through the examination of Crassotrea gigas--or the Pacific Oyster. In addition it hopes to determine if there are differences in microplastic concentration geographically and temporally. Five oyster samples were collected in Spring 2017 …
Delays In Treatment: A Literature Review Of Pathways To Treatment For Psychosis, Daniel S. Connelly
Delays In Treatment: A Literature Review Of Pathways To Treatment For Psychosis, Daniel S. Connelly
University Honors Theses
Psychosis and the signs of psychosis are not widely understood by individuals, families, primary care or community health professionals. As a result, psychotic individuals experience a particularly lengthy delay -- an average of two years -- before they receive treatment; a duration that is called in literature the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP; Connor et al., 2016; Corcoran et al., 2007; Malla et al., 2010). Additionally, despite extensive research, there remains sizeable gaps in knowledge on these delays. Such gaps include how a lack of access to services may contribute to delays, how the psychotic experience delays in justice institutions, …

Myeloid precursor cell reprogramming into a myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC) contributes to high mortality rates in mouse and human sepsis. S100A9 mRNA and intracellular protein levels increase during early sepsis and remain elevated in Gr1+CD11b+ MDSCs after pro-inflammatory sepsis transitions to the later chronic anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive phenotype. The purpose of this study was to determine whether intracellular S100A9 protein might sustain Gr1+CD11b+ MDSC repressor cell reprogramming during sepsis. We used a chronic model of sepsis in mice to show that S100A9 release from MDSCs and circulating phagocytes decreases after early sepsis and that targeting the S100a9 gene improves survival. …

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is a multifunctional, cationic, glycosaminoglycan- binding cytokine and growth factor involved in numerous physiological and pathological processes, including tissue repair and inflammation-related diseases. PTN has been shown to promote leukocyte responses by inducing their migration and expression of inflammatory cytokines. However, the mechanisms through which PTN mediates these responses remain unclear. Here, we identified the integrin Mac-1 (αMβ2, CD11b/CD18) as the receptor mediating macrophage adhesion and migration to PTN. We also found that expression of Mac-1 on the surface of human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells induced their adhesion and migration to PTN. Accordingly, PTN promoted Mac-1-dependent cell …

Objective Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a common comorbidity among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While GORD has been attributed to the antirheumatic medications, no studies of human cohorts have investigated a link between GORD and RA. This study investigates whether GORD is associated with a subsequent RA diagnosis over a 5-year follow-up using a population-based dataset.
Setting Taiwan
Participants We used data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. The study group consisted of 13 645 patients with an ambulatory claim showing a GORD diagnosis. We used propensity score matching to select 13 645 comparison patients (one per study …

National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice
National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice
Doctoral Dissertations
In 2017, the President proposed a budget that allocated sixty percent of US discretionary resources toward military spending, putting US military spending higher than that of the next eight nations combined. Despite this enormous allocation of resources, millions of Americans feel so insecure that they have decided to take steps to insure their own security. With stockpiles of food and weapons, in personal bunkers, these preppers are viewed by some as extreme in their approach. The purpose of this piece is to explore the causes and fears that drive prepping behavior, and what view these individuals have of the US …
Artificial Intelligence In Health Care: Applications And Legal Implications, W. Nicholson Price Ii
Artificial Intelligence In Health Care: Applications And Legal Implications, W. Nicholson Price Ii
Articles
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly moving to change the healthcare system. Driven by the juxtaposition of big data and powerful machine learning techniques—terms I will explain momentarily—innovators have begun to develop tools to improve the process of clinical care, to advance medical research, and to improve efficiency. These tools rely on algorithms, programs created from healthcare data that can make predictions or recommendations. However, the algorithms themselves are often too complex for their reasoning to be understood or even stated explicitly. Such algorithms may be best described as “black-box.” This article briefly describes the concept of AI in medicine, including …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a critical examination of the relationship between sleep problems and/or disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Alzheimer Disease (AD). First, I conducted an exhaustive systematic review of existing literature, and identified gaps in research that led to specific research aims. For the first aim, I conducted the first ever-published meta-analysis examining sleep, cognitive decline and AD, providing an aggregate effect of sleep on AD. Second, focusing on OSA, I conducted a study examining OSA’s effect on longitudinal changes on AD biomarkers in cognitive normal, MCI and AD subjects, using data from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative …

Imaging Wetland Hydrogeophysics: Applications Of Critical Zone Hydrogeophysics To Better Understand Hydrogeologic Conditions In Coastal And Inland Wetlands And Waters, Christine Marie Downs
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three projects utilizing electric and electromagnetic (EM) methods to better understand critical-zone hydrogeologic conditions in select Florida wetlands and waters.
First, a time-lapse electrical resistivity (ER) survey was conducted in section of mangrove forest on a barrier island in southeast Florida to image changes in pore-water salinity in the root zone. ER data show the most variability in the root zone over a 24-hour period, and, generally, the ground is more resistive during the day than overnight.
Second, a suite of three-dimensional forward models, based on varying lateral boundaries and conductivities typical of a coastal wetland, …
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Spirit of Friendship: Girlfriends in Contemporary African American Literature examines spiritual subjectivities that inspire girlfriends in three contemporary novels to journey towards actualization. It examines the girlfriend bond as a space where the Divine Spirit can flourish and assist girlfriends as they seek to become actualized. This project raises epistemological questions as it suggests that within the girlfriend dynamic, knowledge that is traditionally subjugated is formed and refined. Finally, girlfriend epistemology is considered in light of Black Girl Magic, a contemporary social and cultural movement among Black women.

Investigating Marine Resources In The Gulf Of Mexico At Multiple Spatial And Temporal Scales Of Inquiry, Joshua Paul Kilborn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The work in this dissertation represents an attempt to investigate multiple temporal and spatial scales of inquiry relating to the variability of marine resources throughout the Gulf of Mexico large marine ecosystem (Gulf LME). This effort was undertaken over two spatial extents within the greater Gulf LME using two different time-series of fisheries monitoring data. Case studies demonstrating simple frameworks and best practices are presented with the aim of aiding researchers seeking to reduce errors and biases in scientific decision making. Two of the studies focused on three years of groundfish survey data collected across the West Florida Shelf (WFS), …
Role Of Heat Shock Transcription Factor 1 In Ovarian Cancer Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition And Drug Sensitivity, Chase David Powell
Role Of Heat Shock Transcription Factor 1 In Ovarian Cancer Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition And Drug Sensitivity, Chase David Powell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The heat shock response (HSR) is a robust cellular reaction to mitigate protein damage from heat and other challenges to the proteome. This protective molecular program in humans is controlled by heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1). Activation of HSF1 leads to the induction of an array of cytoprotective genes, many of which code for chaperones. These chaperones, known as heat shock proteins (HSPs), are responsible for maintaining the functional integrity of the proteome. HSPs achieve this by promoting proper folding and assembly of nascent proteins, refolding denatured proteins, and processing for degradation proteins and aggregates which cannot be returned …

Investigations Into The Non-Mevalonate Isoprenoid Biosynthesis Pathway's First Two Enzymes Utilizing Hybrid Qm/Mm Techniques, Justin K. White
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Molecular drug design begins with the identication of a problem to solve. This work identies the growing resistance among human pathogens to current treatments. Once the problem is identied and understood, solutions must be proposed. This one is straight forward, we need new antimicrobial drugs. More specically, we need to identify novel targets to inhibit. A large portion of antibiotics focus on disruption of macromolecular production while only a few target metabolic systems. Finally, you need to propose solutions based on the information gathered. In order to avoid existing resistance, it is important to avoid the macromolecular route and focus …

18f-Fdg Pet/Ctct-Based Radiomics For The Prediction Of Radiochemotherapy Treatment Outcomes Of Cervical Cancer, Badereldeen Abdulmajeed Altazi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cervical cancer remains the third most commonly diagnosed gynecological malignancy in the United States and throughout the world despite being potentially preventable. Patients diagnosed with cervical cancer may develop local recurrence in the cervix and surrounding structures (vaginal apex, parametrial, or paracervical), regional recurrence in pelvic lymph nodes, distant metastasis, or a combination of all. The management of such treatment outcomes has not been subject to rigorous investigation. Therefore, there is a need for studies and clinical trials that focus on decision making to support the choice of the best treatment modality that leads to the minimal number of adverse …
Resolving Chronological And Temperature Constraints On Antarctic Deglacial Evolution Through Improved Dating Methodology, Cristina Subt
Resolving Chronological And Temperature Constraints On Antarctic Deglacial Evolution Through Improved Dating Methodology, Cristina Subt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In order to determine the timing of Antarctic ice sheet retreat and advance during the Late Quaternary, various tools are used to measure the age of marginal marine sediments. Carbonate 14C dating is a well-established approach, but requires foraminiferal microfossils, shells or other carbonate materials that are rare in most Antarctic regions, and may also suffer from vital effects, which can result in variability of up to 500 years in living organisms. Bulk acid insoluble organic (AIO) 14C dates are frequently as an alternative, but this approach works best where high productivity and sedimentation rates reign, and not too well …
Bayesian Inference On Quantile Regression-Based Mixed-Effects Joint Models For Longitudinal-Survival Data From Aids Studies, Hanze Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In HIV/AIDS studies, viral load (the number of copies of HIV-1 RNA) and CD4 cell counts are important biomarkers of the severity of viral infection, disease progression, and treatment evaluation. Recently, joint models, which have the capability on the bias reduction and estimates' efficiency improvement, have been developed to assess the longitudinal process, survival process, and the relationship between them simultaneously. However, the majority of the joint models are based on mean regression, which concentrates only on the mean effect of outcome variable conditional on certain covariates. In fact, in HIV/AIDS research, the mean effect may not always be of …

Measuring Cultural Competency In Educators: The Educators Scale Of Student Diversity, Ronak A. Patel
Education Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to uncover a rich theoretical basis of cultural competency and awareness in education and create an instrument, Educators Scale of Student Diversity (ESSD), which reliably and validly measures cultural competency in educators. Current measures lack in both a wide theoretical basis of cultural competency as it relates to educators in diverse teaching environments and in reported psychometric quality. The ESSD derived from a wide range of theoretical constructs that encompass the experience of modern teachers in diverse environments. The original 50 items, which were written after an extensive literature review, were reviewed by a …

Observations On The Puddling Behavior Of The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio Glaucus Canadensis In Northern Michigan, J. Mark Scriber, Matthew P. Ayres
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The occurrence of "puddling" behavior in Lepidoptera has been reviewed by M. J. Norris (1936) by J. A. Downes (1973) and by P. H. Adler (1982). Butterflies have been previously reported on mammalian dung, urine, perspiration, saliva, salt, blood, campfire ashes, aphid honeydew, tree sap and animal carrion. The rarity of female puddling in butterflies, particularly the tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) has been recently addressed by two studies (Berger and Lederhouse 1985, Scriber 1987).

Courtship Behavior In Habronattus Captiosus (Araneae: Salticidae), Bruce Cutler
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Courtship display of Habronattus captiosus involves several behavioral elements common to other members of the Habronattus coecatus species group. The one unique element is vibration of the patellae when raised over the opisthosoma. Male-male interactions included an agonistic display and grappling. Fourteen male-female interactions were observed, which exhibited various combinations of display elements. There was one successful mating and one case of cannibalism by a male.

Araphe Carolina In Illinois (Hemiptera: Largidae), John K. Bouseman
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
Araphe carolina (Herrich-Schaffer) is a little-known species that has been recorded "from North Carolina south to Florida, thence west through Tennessee to Arizona and Baja California" (Halstead, 1972). Froeschner (1944) characterized it as a "scarce species" in recording it from five counties in the Ozark Region of southern Missouri. The purpose of this note is to provide the first records of A. carolina in Illinois and incidentally to provide the first record of any largid bug in the state.
