Synthesis Of Amphiphilic Pegylated Poly([Alpha]-Amino Acid) Tercopolymers And The Impact Of Molecular Architecture On Their Use As Gene And Drug Delivery Vectors, David J. Ulkoski
Synthesis Of Amphiphilic Pegylated Poly([Alpha]-Amino Acid) Tercopolymers And The Impact Of Molecular Architecture On Their Use As Gene And Drug Delivery Vectors, David J. Ulkoski
Dissertations
Poly(α-amino acid)s (PAAs) are a diverse class of polymers that can be synthesized or biologically derived. PAAs have been widely used for biomedical applications due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. Living polymerization through ring opening polymerization of amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides using a nucleophilic initiator provides the potential to manipulate polymer architecture and physiochemical characteristics. In this study, we investigate the use of amphiphilic block and random PAA tercopolymer constructs that contain ionic and hydrophobic components. The amphiphilic character for each tercopolymer allows for the formation nanoparticles that can be used in gene and drug delivery. Each tercopolymer component provides a …
Discrete Time Structured Models And Their Dynamics For Interactive Wild And Sterile Mosquitoes And Malaria Transmissions, Yang Li
Dissertations
Mosquito-borne diseases, including malaria, transmitted between human beings by blood-feeding mosquitoes, have been big concerns for the public health. No vaccines are available. An effective way to prevent such diseases is to control the amount of mosquitoes. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is indeed a method of biological control. Mathematical models have proven useful in gaining insights into challenging questions in population dynamics and epidemiology. The objectives in this dissertation is to formulate new models for interactive wild and sterile mosquitoes so that the dynamics are relatively simpler and mathematically more tractable, but the fundamental model features are snatched. Instead …
Novel Methods In Harvest Of Microalgae And Extraction Of Lipids From Dilute Microalgal Suspension For Biofuel, Chen Zhang
Dissertations
A method of using organic solvent (hexane, 1-butanol, ethyl acetate) to harvest freshwater microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. by tuning microalgal cell surface hydrophobicity with low pH was reported. Harvesting experiments were performed with culture suspension of 60 mL with biomass concentration of 0.35 g/L and 0.85 g/L. Due to cell surface hydrophobicity, microalgal cells attach to the organic solvent and water interphase after separation. Suspension pH of 3 resulted in the highest harvesting efficiency (92-99%) depending on the organic solvent with processing time of 3 min. This method is efficient, cost-effective and eco-friendly as the supernatant can be reused as growth …

Copper salt-catalyzed oxidative amination resulted in the formation of a novel series of triazole-spirodienone conjugates, 4-triazolyl-1-oxa-4-azaspiro[4,5]deca-6,9-dien-3,8-diones and 4-triazolyl-1-oxa-4-azaspiro[4,5]deca-6,9-dien-8-ones. A single crystal of compound 1p among them was grown and analyzed by X-ray crystallography. These compounds were evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against MDA-MB-231, HeLa, A549 and MCF-7 cell lines. Most of them showed moderate to high anticancer potency in the four cancer cell lines. The discovery of the triazole-spirodienone conjugates as cytotoxic agents against cancer cells may open up a new field in which these novel small molecules could be further explored as promising anticancer agents.

Ellen White, Health, And The Third Angel’S Message: Part 1–Improving Health Through Reducing Transmissible Diseases, Warren A. Shipton
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"A systematic approach to Ellen White’s statements on health, particularly in the physical realm, has shown that her words need not be misunderstood and are as sound today as when they were given. She conveyed a profound sense of reverence for God’s word and His instructions on health. Her statements were meant to amplify the principles contained in the Scriptures. I could find no evidence of deficiency in either source. The claim that modern science has discounted her views on such things as leprosy114 is inaccurate. White was more aware of things happening in her day than some modern-day writers …

Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies have enabled humans to generate and investigate the genomes of wild species. This includes the big cat family, such as tigers, lions, and leopards. Adding the first high quality leopard genome, we have performed an in-depth comparative analysis to identify the genomic signatures in the evolution of felid to become the top predators on land. Our study focused on how the carnivore genomes, as compared to the omnivore or herbivore genomes, shared evolutionary adaptations in genes associated with nutrient metabolism, muscle strength, agility, and other traits responsible for hunting and meat digestion. We found …

The Application Of Digital Accelerometers For Wired And Non-Wired Mechanomyography, Niall Campbell, Thomas Egan, Catherine Deegan
The Application Of Digital Accelerometers For Wired And Non-Wired Mechanomyography, Niall Campbell, Thomas Egan, Catherine Deegan
Conference papers
The objective of this paper is to consider the use of digital accelerometers for Mechanomyographic applications. The digital outputs of the accelerometer require the consideration of additional interfacing hardware for any commercial data acquisition systems being considered. The Arduino open-source platform is shown to meet this requirement. This platform also provides access to set the data registers on the accelerometer to output data at the resolution, speed and format required. Results show that digital accelerometers provide an accurate representation of the MMG signal. The second objective of this work was to extend this digital platform to design a wireless MMG …

Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Biological Nutrient Removal During Wastewater Treatment, Elizabeth Quinn Brannon
Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Biological Nutrient Removal During Wastewater Treatment, Elizabeth Quinn Brannon
Open Access Dissertations
Since the 1900s, humans have been altering the global nitrogen (N) cycle by industrially fixing N for fertilizer production. This reactive N is often released back to coastal environments through many mechanisms, including wastewater treatment, where it can lead to numerous consequences such as fish kills and algae blooms.
In many locations, wastewater treatment effluent is one of the largest sources of excess N to coastal environments. Although regulations limiting N loads in wastewater effluent in the U.S. were first developed in the 1970s, stricter regulations started to emerge in many states in the 2000s. In order to meet new …
Moose Density, Habitat, And Winter Tick Epizootics In A Changing Climate, Kyle Ball
Moose Density, Habitat, And Winter Tick Epizootics In A Changing Climate, Kyle Ball
Master's Theses and Capstones
Unregulated hunting and habitat loss led to a near extirpation of moose (Alces alces) in New Hampshire in the 1800s. After state protection in 1901, the estimated population increased slowly to ~500 moose in 1977, then increased rapidly in the next 2 decades to ~7500 following an increase in browse habitat created by spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) and related timber salvage operations, and then halved from 1998-2016 despite highly available optimal habitat. The declining population was partially related to the specific management objective to reduce moose-vehicle collisions, and a possible change in deer hunter and moose behavior that influence population …
Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden
Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden
Master's Theses and Capstones
We have explored the conformational dynamics of the peptide-appended pillar[5]arene (PAP) channel in lipid and block copolymer (BCP) membranes through the use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The novel polymeric structures trans-1,4-polybutadiene (PB), trans-1,4-polyisoprene (PI), and poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline (PMOXA) were created and parameterized. These structures were then used to build and simulate pure PB12PEO9, PB23 PEO16 , PI12 PEO9 , and PI23PEO16 synthetic BCP membranes. In addition, simulations of the PAP channel inserted into lipid (POPC), PB12 PEO9 , and PB23PEO16 membranes were conducted. Results of simulations containing PAP suggest that the membrane environment can affect the channel dynamics and potentially …

Evaluating The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) For Collecting Thematic Mapping Accuracy Assessment Reference Data In New England Forest Communities, Benjamin Thomas Fraser
Master's Theses and Capstones
To overcome the main drivers of global environmental change, such as land use and land cover change, evolving technologies must be adopted to rapidly and accurately capture, process, analyze, and display a multitude of high resolution spatial variables. Remote sensing technologies continue to advance at an ever-increasing rate to meet end-user needs, now in the form of unmanned aerial systems (UAS or drones). UAS have bridged the gap left by satellite imagery, aerial photography, and even ground measurements in data collection potential for all matters of information. This new platform has already been deployed in many data collection scenarios, being …
Discerning Differences Between Zooplankton Communities Based On Lake Trophic Status, Jonathan Dufresne
Discerning Differences Between Zooplankton Communities Based On Lake Trophic Status, Jonathan Dufresne
Master's Theses and Capstones
In 2007 the United States Environmental Protect Agency sampled 1157 lakes to determine the state of the nation’s lakes. The data they collected provided a unique opportunity to study the effects of eutrophication on zooplankton community structure across a range of lakes from a large geographical area. Using this data set two main questions were assessed: 1) what level of taxonomic identification is necessary to detect differences in zooplankton community composition as it relates to patterns in water quality and 2) in a dataset that has extensive spatial and temporal variability, how does one account for regional differences in zooplankton …
Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The Behavior And Physiology Of The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Meghan Owings
Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The Behavior And Physiology Of The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Meghan Owings
Master's Theses and Capstones
Horseshoe crabs are harvested by the biomedical industry in order to create Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) to test medical devices, vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs for pathogenic gram-negative bacteria. Previous studies of the impacts of the biomedical bleeding process on horseshoe crabs have primarily focused on mortality rates and sublethal impacts, using animals held in the laboratory. Therefore, the first goal of this project was to determine the effects of the bleeding process on horseshoe crab behavior once they are released back into their natural environment. In addition, previous studies have typically only investigated the impacts of the full bleeding procedure, …
Burbot Growth Rates In A Northern Mesotrophic Lake, Samuel J. Peterson
Burbot Growth Rates In A Northern Mesotrophic Lake, Samuel J. Peterson
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Burbot Lota lota has a circumpolar distribution throughout cold-water areas and is the only freshwater member of the family Gadidae. There are currently very few management techniques applied to Burbot throughout their northern extent. Growth is an indicator of fish health, biomass, and habitat quality; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the growth rate of Burbot in Lake Bemidji. Burbot (n = 45) were collected along three sites on Lake Bemidji for years 2015-2017. Age was determined from sagittal otoliths, the marginal zones of which were opaque from December to May and translucent from June to November. …

Effects Of Catch-And-Release Angling On Egg Densities In Largemouth Bass Nests, Tyler Robinson
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Predation during early life stages of Centrarchidae offspring are a major cause of decreased reproductive success. For five-weeks Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides defend their broods from invaders such as Yellow Perch Perca flavescens and Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus. The focus of this study was to determine if predation upon Largemouth Bass broods increased as removal time from the nest via catch-and-release angling increased. Sampling was conducted on the Whitefish Chain, MN from 7 May - 7 June 2016, where a total of 29 nests were located and sampled. Three treatment groups were used; immediate catch-and-release, three-minute, and a seven- minute …
Effect Of Abiotic Factors On Bluegill Size Structure In Nine Central Minnesota Lakes, Ryan Henry
Effect Of Abiotic Factors On Bluegill Size Structure In Nine Central Minnesota Lakes, Ryan Henry
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Bluegill are the most targeted species of fish in Minnesota. In recent years, the abundance of slow growing, small Bluegill has increased within the state. Angler harvest of Bluegill can reduce the average length of Bluegill up to four times the original length. Abiotic factors such as maximum depth, average water clarity, littoral area, and percent littoral area can influence the dynamics of a lake system. There has been limited research on whether these abiotic factors can influence the size structure of a Bluegill population. The objective of this study is to determine if there is a direct relationship between …
Aquaculturists' Perceptions Of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (Imta), Heather Kinney
Aquaculturists' Perceptions Of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (Imta), Heather Kinney
Open Access Master's Theses
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has been proposed as a potential strategy to reduce negative impacts of traditional monoculture and improve the domestic seafood trade market in the US. Views from the aquaculture industry on incentives for IMTA adoption and continuation are crucial for understanding the likelihood of IMTA reaching a commercial scale; however, studies on aquaculturists’ perceptions of IMTA are limited.
The objectives of this study are: 1) to explore different methods of IMTA being used in the US by aquaculturists; 2) to determine how US aquaculturists’ perceptions of IMTA affect the adoption and continuation of IMTA; and 3) to …
Social Outcomes Of Coastal Ecosystem Management: The Role Of Stakeholder Values And Norms, Lauren I. Josephs
Social Outcomes Of Coastal Ecosystem Management: The Role Of Stakeholder Values And Norms, Lauren I. Josephs
Open Access Master's Theses
With human use of coastal ecosystems at an all-time high, a current challenge for conservation is to integrate social factors into management. Studies with this aim have focused primarily on monetary valuations of ecosystem functions, overlooking the psycho-social motivations underlying conservation and management. Our study leverages a values-beliefs-norms framework of environmental attitudes in interviews with residents and tourists of Martha’s Vineyard (MA). Specifically, we assess the role of human values, perceptions, and preferences in evaluating what constitutes social viability in coastal ecosystem management. Our results show that situational constraints to public understanding of conservation initiatives can undermine support even among …
Identifying Regional Climatic And Human Influences On Dengue Fever Transmission In Puerto Rico, Emily A. Serman
Identifying Regional Climatic And Human Influences On Dengue Fever Transmission In Puerto Rico, Emily A. Serman
Open Access Master's Theses
Worldwide, approximately 2.5 billion people live in regions that are vulnerable to dengue fever. Dengue is primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes who prefer urban habitats where they can live in close proximity to humans, their preferred source of blood meals. There is no cure for dengue fever and vaccines are still in early stages, years away from mass distribution. As a result, effective control of dengue is reliant on our ability to understand the complex relationship between humans, vectors, and the environment.
The purpose of this study is to assess temporal and spatial patterns of dengue transmission in Puerto …
