Organellar Genome Evolution In Red Algal Parasites: Differences In Adelpho- And Alloparasites, Eric Salomaki
Organellar Genome Evolution In Red Algal Parasites: Differences In Adelpho- And Alloparasites, Eric Salomaki
Open Access Dissertations
Parasitism is a common life strategy throughout the eukaryotic tree of life. Many devastating human pathogens, including the causative agents of malaria and toxoplasmosis, have evolved from a photosynthetic ancestor. However, how an organism transitions from a photosynthetic to a parasitic life history strategy remains mostly unknown. Parasites have independently evolved dozens of times throughout the Florideophyceae (Rhodophyta), and often infect close relatives. This framework enables direct comparisons between autotrophs and parasites to investigate the early stages of parasite evolution. Parasitic red algae have traditionally been defined as either ‘adelphoparasites’, which infect hosts within their same family or tribe, or …

The Effects Of Tca Cycle Mutations On The Virulence Of Vibrio Aguillarum Strains M93sm And Nb10sm, Edward Spinard
Open Access Dissertations
Vibrio anguillarum is an extracellular bacterial pathogen that is a causative agent of vibriosis in finfish and crustaceans. Mortality rates range from 30% to 100% and systemic infection usually causes fish to die within 1-4 days of initial infection. The primary routes of infections are through the skin, gills and intestines. Chemotactic motility and the metalloprotease EmpA have been shown to be important virulence factors during the invasion stage while the siderophore anguibactin, flagellin subunits and lipopolysaccharides were shown to be important for persistence in the host during the post-invasion stage. Three secreted proteins that are cytotoxic against epithelial cells …

Characterization Of A H4k20me2 Methyl-Binding Domain In The Fanconi Anemia Protein Fancd2, Karissa Lynn Paquin
Open Access Dissertations
Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disease that results on early onset bone marrow failure, congenital defects, and increased cancer susceptibility. It is caused by mutation in any one of twenty two genes, whose protein products work in conjunction as part of the FA-BRCA pathway, a DNA repair pathway that specifically repairs DNA interstrand crosslinks (ICLs). One of the key steps in pathway activation is the monoubiquitination of the FANCD2 protein. Upon pathway activation, FANCD2 is recruited to sites of DNA damage, where is interacts with downstream repair protiens to promote DNA repair via homologous recombination (HR). How FANCD2 …

Characterization Of Cellulose Synthesis Complexes In Physcomitrella Patens, Xingxing Li
Open Access Dissertations
Due to the enormous economic value and significance of cellulose in human consumption and plant cell walls, production of cellulose microfibrils is considered to be one of the most critical biochemical processes in plant biology. In the past decades, cellulose biosynthesis has been extensively studied in vascular plants. More and more fundamental questions related to this key process are being answered. One such question is: What are the protein components of the enzymatic complex for cellulose synthesis? In seed plants, membrane-embedded rosette Cellulose Synthesis Complexes (CSCs) producing cellulose microfibrils are obligate hetero-oligomeric, being assembled from three functionally distinct and non-interchangeable …

Therapeutic Uses Of Pineapple-Extracted Bromelain In Surgical Care - A Review., Zehra Abdul Muhammad, Tashfeen Ahmad
Therapeutic Uses Of Pineapple-Extracted Bromelain In Surgical Care - A Review., Zehra Abdul Muhammad, Tashfeen Ahmad
Department of Surgery Docs
Abstract
Bromelain is an extract obtained from the pineapple plant and is used as a traditional folk remedy for several ailments. In this review, a comprehensive electronic database search was carried out to compile available literature on therapeutic implications of bromelain. Pharmaceutical value of bromelain has been demonstrated in different surgical sub-specialties. Diverse biological processes like anti-inflammatory, anti-oedematous, analgesic, anti-thrombotic, exfoliation etc. are involved in bromelain's therapeutic actions, mediated through the kallikrein-kinin and arachidonic acid pathways as well as through effects on cell mediated immunity. Bromelain equals non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as an anti-inflammatory agent, but has been shown to have …

We have investigated the in vitro antibacterial bioactivity of dichloromethane-soluble fractions of Artemisia californica, Trichostema lanatum, Salvia apiana, Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea and Quercus agrifolia Née against a ΔtolC mutant strain of E. coli. These plants are traditional medicinal plants of the Chumash Native Americans of Southern California. Bioassay-guided fractionation led to the isolation of three flavonoid compounds from A. californica: jaceosidin (1), jaceidin (2), and chrysoplenol B (3). Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited anti-bacterial activity against E. coli ΔtolC in liquid cultures. The in vitro activity of 1 against the enoyl reductase enzyme (FabI) was measured using a spectrophotometric …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonosis of global distribution including Thailand. It caused by pathogenic Leptospira. The pathogenesis is not clear. Surface-exposed proteins (PSEs) are first part for interactions with host cells, immune system and should be potential targets for vaccine development. To date, many researches study only individual PSEs but the studies of surface proteomic is less. The study of surface proteomic will be important information for pathogenesis studies and search for vaccine candidate. This study aimed to identify surface proteomics of pathogenic Leptospira by surface biotinylation and surface shaving using proteinase K that has been used to identify surface …
Who Governs The Wasteland? BangkokS Informal Recycling Sector In Urban Waste Management, Vanessa Hongsathavij
Who Governs The Wasteland? BangkokS Informal Recycling Sector In Urban Waste Management, Vanessa Hongsathavij
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Amidst rapid population growth and urbanization, municipalities confront many challenges posed by waste generation, and its subsequent collection and disposal. In light of these challenges, an integrated solid waste management has emerged as an alternative and more holistic approach to tackling waste challenges, including a more serious consideration of power dynamics and relationships between different actors and interests. Integrated solid waste management in developing countries further reveals an active informal sector and various practices of informality in resource recovery and recycling. Yet, it remains unclear if solid waste management systems can further integrate the informal sector in such a way …

Group Equine Assisted Therapy: A Novel Approach For Treating Adolescents Diagnosed With Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Nicole C. Wozniak
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a pervasive form of mental illness which affects millions of youth ages 12-18. It is characterized by a frequent and persistent pattern of angry mood, defiant behavior, and/or vindictiveness. Teenagers afflicted with ODD are often unwilling to participate in treatment and have difficulty responding to traditional therapy models. The current "Best Practices" model for treating ODD is extensive family therapy. As of today, there is no Best Practice method for providing direct treatment to the young people themselves. Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) has been found to be qualitatively effective in reducing ODD symptoms in the …

This study investigated the association of race, age, and census tract area poverty level on breast cancer stage at diagnosis. The study was limited to women residing in Missouri, aged 18 years and older, diagnosed with breast cancer, and whose cases were reported to the Cancer Registry between 2003 and 2008. The risk, relative risk, and increased risk of late-stage at diagnosis by race, age, and census tract area poverty level were computed. We found that the odds of late-stage breast cancer among African-American women were higher when compared with their white counterpart (OR 1.433; 95% CI, 1.316, 1.560). In …

Cardiac dysfunction is correlated with detrimental prognosis of sepsis and contributes to a high risk of mortality. After an initial hyperinflammatory reaction, most patients enter a protracted state of immunosuppression (late sepsis) that alters both innate and adaptive immunity. The changes of cardiac function in late sepsis are not yet known. MicroRNA-155 (miR-155) is previously found to play important roles in both regulations of immune activation and cardiac function. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were operated to develop into early and late sepsis phases, and miR-155 mimic was injected through the tail vein 48 h after cecal ligation and puncture …

Our presentation was aimed at providing a thorough overview of concepts that interfere with an adolescent’s ability to stay in school and graduate. Additionally, the presentation addressed what other factors of poverty, such as risk-taking behaviors (e.g., marijuana use, binge drinking, or sexual activity), might carry over into college life and affect a student’s academic career. Variables connected to family community, family responsibilities, and adolescents’ self-esteem were described as well. Finally, the presentation discussed factors that play into a student’s willingness to seek out college campus resources for support. With this paper, we hope to outline variables that lead to …

Little attention has been given to differences in obesity risk factors by racial/ethnic groups. Using data from the 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey, we examined differences in risk factors for obesity among Whites, Latinos, Asians, and African Americans among 42,935 adults (24.8% obese). Estimates were weighted to ensure an unbiased representation of the Californian population. Multiple logistic and linear regression analyses were used to examine the differences in risk factors for obesity. Large ethnic disparities were found in obesity prevalence: Whites (22.0%), Latinos (33.6%), African Americans (36.1%), and Asians (9.8%). Differences in risk factors for obesity were also observed: Whites …
