The paucity of information on assortment of EEG leads in goats has hampered analysis of brain regional activity during different physiological, pathological, and ethological conditions in this species. Hence, the present study was designed to develop a montage with suitable combinations of EEG electrode arrays in goats. Ten specimens of freshly slaughtered goat heads (crossbreed of Jamunapari) were procured and preserved at -20 °C. Frozen samples were sliced sagittally and transversely to corroborate the link between intended topographic landmarks for EEG leads over the scalp and underlying provinces of the brain. Based on these observations, nine sites for EEG electrode …

The Role Of The Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Exercise Induced Muscle Damage And Repair, B Jones, G Hoyne Jan 2017

The Role Of The Innate And Adaptive Immunity In Exercise Induced Muscle Damage And Repair, B Jones, G Hoyne

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

The immune system plays a crucial role in regulating tissue repair processes following damage. The cellular basis of tissue repair has best been studied in toxin-induced models due to their reliability and reproducible kinetics. These models have established a crucial role for innate and adaptive immune cells that follow a temporally regulated response that begins with a proinflammatory response that is subsequently replaced by a regulatory type 2 immune response to facilitate tissue repair and restore homeostasis. Inflammation is a crucial first response to cell damage that is modulated by the response of innate lymphoid cells and tissue resident regulatory …

Calix[4]Pyrroles With Bulky Substituents And Their Anion Binding Studies, Ahmet Akar, Abdullah Aydogan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Calix[4]pyrrole derivatives with bulky substituents at their meso-positions were synthesized via mixed condensation of pyrrole with cyclohexanone and acetophenone derivatives. Anion binding studies, carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry in 1,2-dichloroethane with Cl$^{-}$ and CH$_{3}$CO$_{2}^{-}$ anions in the form of their tetrabutylammonium salts, revealed that these new calix[4]pyrrole derivatives can bind the aforementioned anions as effectively as the unsubstituted ''parent'' system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (1). Structural characterizations of new calix[4]pyrroles were carried out by using $^{1}$H and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy corroborated with mass spectrometry.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This study deals with the adsorption of two pesticides, carbendazim and flumetsulam, from aqueous solutions onto four homoionic-montmorillonite clays (Ag$^{+}$, Zn$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, and H$^{+})$. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm data were analyzed using Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherms. Linear and nonlinear fitting methods were compared to determine the best-fitting isotherms for the experimental data. Three error analysis methods were used to evaluate the data for each method: the coefficient of determination (R$^{2})$, sum of squared errors (SSE), and chi-square test ($\chi^{2})$. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms exhibited that the carbendazim adsorption mainly involved cation exchange with homoionic-montmorillonite adsorbents. However, for flumetsulam, the main mechanisms …

This research has led to the creation of computer software which lowers the levels of blue light in the evening to help with sleep. This study looked at the impact of wavelength filtering software on sleep onset, sleep duration and subjective alertness after morning waking of four college students. The college students were randomized into two groups and had the wavelength filtering software f.lux …

Effects Of Wildfires On Rattlesnake (Crotalus Oreganus) Growth And Movement In Washington State, Joseph Chase Jan 2017

Effects Of Wildfires On Rattlesnake (Crotalus Oreganus) Growth And Movement In Washington State, Joseph Chase

All Master's Theses

Fire is a dominant force in the Pacific Northwest that shapes ecosystems and influences wildlife, yet little is known of its effects on local predators. Northern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) comprise an excellent model to investigate how fire may influence wildlife because they are important predators that contribute to controlling prey populations, but are also unable to readily escape from wildfires. We developed a novel technique to assess growth rates of rattlesnakes by using digital photography to analyze differences in widths of their rattle segments laid down over time. We compared growth rates of rattlesnakes in habitats that …

Navigating The (Im)Perfect Performances Of Queer Iranian-American Identity, Shadee Abdi Jan 2017

Navigating The (Im)Perfect Performances Of Queer Iranian-American Identity, Shadee Abdi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the social sciences and humanities, failure to adequately account for the intersectional ways people of color navigate their multiple identities within contesting cultural systems, creates an unfinished portrait of queer identity. For queer people of color, negotiating queer identity is always in relation to their nationality, race-ethnicity, class, gender, religion, and family. While many queer of color stories share similar obligatory cultural norms, the legal ramifications that impact the lives of queer Iranians and their families, both within Iran and abroad, challenge many queer of color expectations. Due to stringent cultural and legal influences, Iranian social discourse heavily impacts …

Preparing Occupational Therapists For Treatment Of The Transgender Population: A Training Guide For Supportive Care, Nicola Grun, Lauren Trohkimoinen Jan 2017

Preparing Occupational Therapists For Treatment Of The Transgender Population: A Training Guide For Supportive Care, Nicola Grun, Lauren Trohkimoinen

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Throughout current literature, it is clear that people who identify as transgender face larger percentages of occupational injustice and deprivation than people who identify with the sex they were assigned at birth (Bar, Jarus, Wada, Rechtman, & Noy, 2016; Twinley, 2014). There is no occupational therapy specific research or client-specific programming for transgender people (Beagan, Chiasson, Fiske, Forseth, Hosein, Myers & Stang, 2013), which indicates the need for supportive care for this population. The purpose of this scholarly project is to develop a training guide to prepare occupational therapists to provide supportive care for the transgender population. The Ecology of …

Fructose And Its Contribution To Cardiovascular Disease And Metabolic Syndrome, Jessica Anderson Jan 2017

Fructose And Its Contribution To Cardiovascular Disease And Metabolic Syndrome, Jessica Anderson

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The incidence of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and combination of symptoms classified as “metabolic syndrome” that eventually leads to type 2 diabetes have risen dramatically over the past few decades. The current dietary guidelines that advised patients to avoid dietary fats were originally developed in the 1960’s. This led the way for food manufacturers to remove fats in processed foods and replace them with sugars, particularly fructose. At the time there was no clinical trial data that definitively supported these guidelines.

The increased use of fructose as a food additive has dramatically increased the per-capita consumption of this sugar. More recent …
