Reproducing The Capitalist Patriarchy In The Evangelical Christian Sexual Purity Movement: A Feminist Christian’S Concern And Hope, Hannah K. Griggs
Audre Lorde Prize
Through a feminist lens, this essay will explore modern expressions of the conservative evangelical Christian purity movement, including Christian sex manuals, abstinence-only education programs, and purity balls. To begin, I will explain the most important facets of my own feminist theory, which draws from existentialist, socialist, and postmodern feminisms. Using this unique combination of theories, I will attempt to reconcile my deeply held Christian and feminist beliefs about sex. Finally, I will propose a solution that honors both of these important parts of my identity. I assert that the Christian purity movement Others women reinforcing a gender binary, bending to …

From Inside The Cage To Outside The Box: Natural Resources As A Platform For Nonhuman Animal Personhood In The U.S. And Australia, Randall S. Abate, Jonathan Crowe
Journal Publications
Nonhuman animals are currently treated as property under U.S. and Australian law, leaving them open to various kinds of exploitation. There has been a gradual evolution away from this property paradigm in both countries, but significant work remains to ensure that nonhuman animals are afforded adequate legal protections. This article considers the legal avenues available to protect nonhuman animals in the U.S. and Australia, focusing particularly on the attribution of legal personhood. Section 2 of the article reviews attempts by the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) to establish legal personhood protections for nonhuman animals through writ of habeas corpus petitions under …
The Genetics Of Morality: Policing Science In Dudintsev’S White Robes, Yvonne Howell
The Genetics Of Morality: Policing Science In Dudintsev’S White Robes, Yvonne Howell
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The Men and women in White Robes (Belye odezhdv), Vladimir Dudinstev's fictional account of the banning of genetics in the Soviet Union, are acutely aware that in the 20th century, the study of the fruit fly is the study of man. The key to unraveling the mystery of human nature lies in the easily observed chromosomes of the forbidden fly (drosophila melanogaster). Under Stalin, the banned geneticists were branded “Morganists” after their hero Thomas Hunt Morgan, the Columbia University researcher who pioneered the technique of mapping locations on drosophila chromosomes to specific traits in the flies. To …

Misappropriation Of Genetic Resources In Africa: A Study Of: Pentadiplandra Brazzeana,Impatiens Usambarensis, And Combretum Micranthum, Julie Micalizzi
Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet
"This paper...address[es] three potential cases of misappropriation concerning traditional knowledge and genetic resources of traditional groups in Africa and will explore how the Western patent system enabled, prevented, and corrected misappropriation in the context of these case studies. In all three studies, the patent system failed in misapplying the requirements of patentability and in granting patents for information that is per se unpatentable. However, the unpatentability of these specific instances of traditional knowledge also precludes the indigenous populations from claiming property rights over the information. Without an exclusionary property right, third parties are still able to commercialize the information. While such …

Turkish Journal of Physics
The SHIELD-HIT transport code, in several versions, has been used for modeling the interaction of therapeutic beams of light nuclei with tissue-equivalent materials for a long time. All versions of the code include the useful option of decomposition of the absorbed dose by the linear energy transfer (LET), but this option has not been described and published to date. In this work the procedure of decomposition of the absorbed dose by LET is described and illustrated by using the decomposition of the Bragg curve in a water phantom, irradiated by beams of protons, alpha particles, and ions of lithium and …

Benefits Of The U.S. Program For Terrorism Insurance From A Comparative Perspective, Jeffrey E. Thomas
Benefits Of The U.S. Program For Terrorism Insurance From A Comparative Perspective, Jeffrey E. Thomas
Faculty Works
This article summarizes the U.S. program for terrorism insurance and outlines its advantages as compared to similar programs in other developed countries. The program, while similar to reinsurance, does not require participants to pay premiums but instead uses an ex post recoupment mechanism. Consequently, it is generally referred to as a Federal “backstop.” This approach requires less capital investment and makes “pricing” more accurate than a reinsurance approach. The program also requires insurers to maintain significant amounts of exposure through insurer deductibles and copayments, which creates market demand for the development of terrorism reinsurance in the private market. The current …

In Defense Of Secondary Pharmaceutical Patents: Response To The Un's Guidelines For Pharmaceutical Patent Examination, Christopher M. Holman
Faculty Works
In 2015 the United Nations Development Programme issued a document entitled Guidelines for Pharmaceutical Patent Examination: Examining Pharmaceutical Patents from a Public Health Perspective (the “Guidelines”). The heart of the Guidelines is a category-by-category examination of eight types of “secondary” pharmaceutical patent claims: Markush claims; selection patents; polymorphs; enantiomers; salts; ethers and esters; compositions; doses; combinations; prodrugs; metabolites; and new medical uses. The Guidelines advise patent offices to apply heightened patentability requirements to these claims in a manner that would effectively deny patent protection to important pharmaceutical innovations currently afforded patent protection. In particular, the Guidelines postulate that many forms …

Charting The Contours Of Copyright Regime Optimized For Engineered Genetic Code, Christopher M. Holman

There is a growing disconnect between the traditional patent-centric approach to protecting biotechnological innovation and the emerging intellectual property imperatives of “synthetic biology,” a promising new manifestation of biotechnology that enables the design and construction of artificial biological pathways, organisms or devices, as well as the redesign of existing natural biological systems. As explained in previous articles, one way to deal with this disconnect would be to expand the scope of copyrightable subject matter to encompass engineered genetic sequences, much in the way that copyright was expanded in the 1970s and 1980s to include computer programs. The present article expands …

Inference Using Bhattacharyya Distance To Model Interaction Effects When The Number Of Predictors Far Exceeds The Sample Size, Sarah A. Janse
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In recent years, statistical analyses, algorithms, and modeling of big data have been constrained due to computational complexity. Further, the added complexity of relationships among response and explanatory variables, such as higher-order interaction effects, make identifying predictors using standard statistical techniques difficult. These difficulties are only exacerbated in the case of small sample sizes in some studies. Recent analyses have targeted the identification of interaction effects in big data, but the development of methods to identify higher-order interaction effects has been limited by computational concerns. One recently studied method is the Feasible Solutions Algorithm (FSA), a fast, flexible method that …
Fda’S Efforts To Tame The 'Wild West' Of Regenerative Medicine, Christopher M. Holman
Fda’S Efforts To Tame The 'Wild West' Of Regenerative Medicine, Christopher M. Holman

Stem cell-based regenerative therapies hold the potential to address a host of health concerns, particularly congenital, age-related, and trauma-induced injuries, and diseases involving organ and tissue degeneration, conditions that have proven refractory to conventional drug-based approaches. For the time being, however, there is little in the way of solid evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of most cell-based therapeutic approaches (with the notable exception of hematopoietic stem cells used to treat diseases of the blood and immune system). This Holman Report begins with an overview of the current uncertain regulatory status of regenerative medicine in the U.S., including several draft …

Quantitative Analysis Of Acetic Acid In Hard Woods As A Way To Improve Museum Artifact Storage, Alexandria Flora
Quantitative Analysis Of Acetic Acid In Hard Woods As A Way To Improve Museum Artifact Storage, Alexandria Flora
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Many materials used for storage of museum artifacts have been found to cause damage to the items either through emitting harmful volatile gases or through direct contact. Harmful storage techniques can cause corrosion, discoloration, or deterioration of priceless artifacts. Museum enclosures made of hardwoods have been shown to emit acetic acid vapors that cause damage to the items being stored. In the present study, a review of the effects of acetic acid damage on museum artifacts was performed, and an evolved gas analysis and titration method were used to quantify acetic acid in various hardwoods.
Most Likely To Succeed: The Exploration Of Factors Affecting Successful Completion Of A Practical Nursing Program, Jennifer J. Shoemake
Most Likely To Succeed: The Exploration Of Factors Affecting Successful Completion Of A Practical Nursing Program, Jennifer J. Shoemake
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies
In the realm of higher education, retention is a concept vital to the progression and security of all institutions. This remains true for all nursing programs as well because reports have shown an attrition rate as high as 50% in some nursing programs across the globe. Along with the nursing shortage projected in the next 20 years, retention in nursing programs poses a massive problem for not just higher education but healthcare as well. Therefore, it is important for nursing educators to understand the factors affecting student completion of a nursing program.
This two-phase, mixed-methods study sought to answer the …
Evolution Equations With A Parameter And Application To Transport-Convection Differential Equations, Emile Franc Doungmo Goufo
Evolution Equations With A Parameter And Application To Transport-Convection Differential Equations, Emile Franc Doungmo Goufo
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We deeply investigate the well-posedness of models taking the form $_0^AD^{\beta }_tu(t) = Au(t),\;\; u(0)= \,f,\;\;\;00$ where $_0^AD^{\beta }_t$ is a derivative with the fractional parameter $\beta$ and $A$ is a closed densely defined operator in a Banach space. We show that, unlike other systems, solutions of our models are not governed by Mittag--Leffler functions and their variants. We extend and adapt Peano's idea to our models and establish conditions for existence and uniqueness of solutions. In particular, relations between the two-parameter solution operator, its resolvent, and its generator are provided; the issue of subordination and prolongation principles are addressed; …

My empirical study, which examines neuroscience evidence in 800 criminal cases over the course of two decades, is the first to determine how, when, and why victim brain scan evidence is introduced and used in court. My study reveals that although courts commonly rely on brain scans to show the extent of a victim’s injury, the actual application of this neuroscience evidence extends far beyond the purpose for which it is admitted.

Simplexity: Plain Language And The Tax Law, Joshua D. Blank, Leigh Osofsky
Emory Law Journal
In recent years, federal government agencies have increasingly attempted to use plain language in written communications with the public. In the tax context, rather than achieving simplicity, which would involve reform of the underlying law, the use of plain language to describe complex legal rules and regulations often yields ¿simplexity.¿ As we define it, simplexity occurs when the government presents clear and simple explanations of the law without highlighting its underlying complexity or reducing this complexity through formal legal changes. Having introduced the concept of simplexity to the legal literature, we show how the IRS¿s use of simplexity poses a …

Evaluation Of Diagnostic Methods For The Detection Of Pestiviruses In Clinical Samples, Peli̇n Tuncer Göktuna, Kadi̇r Yeşi̇lbağ
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
There are several commonly used diagnostic methods to detect pestiviruses for routine diagnostic purposes. In the present study, we aimed to compare virus isolation-indirect immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (VI-IIPMA), antigen capture ELISA (ACE), and RT-PCR for the detection of pestiviruses in clinical samples. Out of 246 samples tested (11 serum, 119 swab, 116 tissue), 28 samples (11.39%) were positive and 218 (88.61%) were negative using the VI-IIPMA method. Using ACE, 70 samples (28.46%) were positive and 176 (71.54%) were negative. Finally, using RT-PCR analysis, we detected 19 (7.72%) positive and 227 (92.28%) negative samples. Inconsistencies were observed among results of the …
