Improving The Understanding Of Different Diets On The Concentration And Metabolism Of The Mammalian Lignan Enterolactone In Dairy Cattle, Caren Paludo Ghedini Jan 2017

Improving The Understanding Of Different Diets On The Concentration And Metabolism Of The Mammalian Lignan Enterolactone In Dairy Cattle, Caren Paludo Ghedini

Doctoral Dissertations

Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) is the richest source of the plant lignan secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), which is precursor for the synthesis of the mammalian lignans enterolactone (EL) and enterodiol (ED) by the gastrointestinal microbes in mammals. There is a great deal of interest in promoting increased intakes of lignans in humans’ diet due to their potential health benefits, especially in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, hypercholesterolaemia, breast and prostate cancers, and osteoporosis. Consumption of milk and dairy products enriched in EL could be an excellent strategy to increase the intake of lignans by humans. The first (Chapter II) and second (Chapter …

Patterns And Drivers Of Carbon Fluxes In Temperate Forests, Andrew Ouimette Jan 2017

Patterns And Drivers Of Carbon Fluxes In Temperate Forests, Andrew Ouimette

Doctoral Dissertations

Despite decades of carbon cycling research in terrestrial ecosystems, a complex suite of biotic and abiotic interactions make a complete understanding of the natural carbon cycle elusive. This thesis aims to advance our understanding of the carbon cycle, and stems from several ongoing projects aimed at quantifying carbon dynamics in forest ecosystems across a range of scales, with a specific effort to include both above and belowground components of forest ecosystems. I begin with a project using detailed chemical measurements on specific segments of root systems from two different tree species, in order to help refine methods that quantify the …

Simulation Studies Of Signaling And Regulatory Proteins, Hossein Mohammadiarani Jan 2017

Simulation Studies Of Signaling And Regulatory Proteins, Hossein Mohammadiarani

Doctoral Dissertations

I used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as a primary tool to study folding and dynamics of signaling and regulatory proteins. Specifically, I have studied two classes of proteins: the first part of my thesis reports studies on peptides and receptors of the insulin family, and the second part reports on studies of regulatory proteins from the G-protein coupled receptor family. The first problem that I investigated was understanding the folding mechanism of the insulin B-chain and its mimetic peptide (S371) which were studied using enhanced sampling simulation methods. I validated our simulation approaches by predicting the known solution structure of …

Effects Of Agricultural Practices On Soil Communities And Their Associated Ecosystem Services, Lesley W. Atwood Jan 2017

Effects Of Agricultural Practices On Soil Communities And Their Associated Ecosystem Services, Lesley W. Atwood

Doctoral Dissertations

To maximize crop yields, commodity crop production systems typically rely on inputs of fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation; simplification of crop rotations (e.g., monocultures); and strategic use of soil disturbance (e.g., tillage, cultivation, etc.). While these practices are intended to optimize the soil conditions for crop development and reduce spatial and temporal variability in crop yield, they also impact soil biological diversity and the important agroecosystem services soil communities provide. Identification of management practices that are less prone to causing undesirable changes in the soil food web community are central to improving the sustainability of our agricultural systems. In this dissertation, …

Hilic-Ms/Ms Method Development For The Analysis Of Select Paralytic Shellfish Toxins In Shellfish Harvested From New Hampshire Coastal Waters, Jessica Henry Jan 2017

Hilic-Ms/Ms Method Development For The Analysis Of Select Paralytic Shellfish Toxins In Shellfish Harvested From New Hampshire Coastal Waters, Jessica Henry

Doctoral Dissertations

A hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of select paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins: decarbamoylsaxitoxin (dcSTX), neosaxitoxin (NEO), and saxitoxin (STX). The method employs a bare silica core-shell stationary phase and isocratic elution conditions to achieve chromatographic separation of the selected toxins. The HILIC-MS/MS method was applied to the analysis of sixteen mussel samples harvested from the New Hampshire coastline during the 2016 harvest season. Of these selected mussel samples analyzed, STX was detected in all of the samples; NEO was detected in two samples; and dcSTX was not detected in any sample. …

Targeting Inflammation And Downstream Protein Metabolism In Sarcopenia: A Brief Up-Dated Description Of Concurrent Exercise And Leucine-Based Multimodal Intervention, Zhi Xia, Jason Cholewa, Yan Zhao, Hua Yu Shang, Yue Qin Yang, Kassiana Araújo Pessôa, Quan Sheng Su, Fernanda Lima-Soares, Nelo Eidy Zanchi Jan 2017

Targeting Inflammation And Downstream Protein Metabolism In Sarcopenia: A Brief Up-Dated Description Of Concurrent Exercise And Leucine-Based Multimodal Intervention, Zhi Xia, Jason Cholewa, Yan Zhao, Hua Yu Shang, Yue Qin Yang, Kassiana Araújo Pessôa, Quan Sheng Su, Fernanda Lima-Soares, Nelo Eidy Zanchi

Kinesiology

Sarcopenia is defined as the progressive loss of muscle mass with age, and poses a serious threat to the physiological and psychological health of the elderly population with consequential economic and social burdens. Chronic low-grade inflammation plays a central role in the development of sarcopenia such that it alters cellular protein metabolism to favor proteolysis over synthesis, and thereby accelerates muscular atrophy. The purpose of this review is to highlight how exercise and nutrition intervention strategies can attenuate or treat sarcopenia. Resistance exercise increases not only muscle mass but also muscle strength, while aerobic exercise is able to ameliorate the …

Cr(V) is a carcinogen that oxidizes guanine aggressively to form spiroiminodihydantion (Sp) and guanidinohydantoin (Gh), both of which contain an unusual hydantoin moiety that cause G→T transversion mutations at a high rate. Endonuclease VIII (nei) can recognize and excise these oxidation products from DNA and is translated as one of five protein products of the Nei operon in Escherichia coli (E. coli). However, the functions of the other four proteins remain unknown. To address this gap in knowledge, we focused on one of the four that immediately precedes nei, the ybgL protein. Previous work by our group has suggested a …

Examining Drivers Of Phenotypic Variation In The Perennial Herb Showy Milkweed (Asclepias Speciosa)., Kira I. Sussman Jan 2017

Examining Drivers Of Phenotypic Variation In The Perennial Herb Showy Milkweed (Asclepias Speciosa)., Kira I. Sussman

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Many plant species show variation in phenotypic traits, such as traits related to growth and defense against herbivores, across environmental gradients. Differences in phenotypic traits can be due to selection, leading to local adaptation, or due to the random process of genetic drift. To examine the driver of phenotypic variation, I conducted a Qst (a measure of phenotypic variation among populations) vs. Fst (a measure of genetic variation among populations) analysis for 13 populations of A. speciosa grown in a common garden, using five growth and defense traits and seven microsatellite markers. I found relatively low differentiation at the neutral …

Policing In Partnership: Nicaraguan Policies With Implications For U.S. Police Forces, J. Thomas Ratchford Iii Jan 2017

Policing In Partnership: Nicaraguan Policies With Implications For U.S. Police Forces, J. Thomas Ratchford Iii

Emory International Law Review

In the midst of surging gang-fueled violence in Central America, Nicaragua has developed a community policing model that's results call into question the efficacy of the militarized model employed by both her neighbors and many jurisdictions in the United States. This Comment argues that, while the United States may have pioneered the concept of community policing, the Nicaraguan National Police has perfected it. This approach has the potential to inform implementation worldwide, specifically in the United States. Rather than militarization, which has eroded trust between residents and police forces, the Nicaraguan model offers a return to policing in partnership with …

Essentialism Of Addiction And Mental Illness, Mary Pirik Jan 2017

Essentialism Of Addiction And Mental Illness, Mary Pirik

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Essentialism is the belief that certain categories have an underlying essence that is inborn, and cause outward features and characteristics. Many studies have expressed the link between essentialism and stigma in our society which provides evidence that there are stigmas placed on those with mental health disorders, and those negative attitudes create in turn negative behaviors towards these individuals. This evidence has prompted the current study, which primarily considers how essentialist beliefs can enforce harmful attitudes. To do so, two mental illnesses, Heroin addiction and Bipolar I disorder, were looked at in a side by side comparison. Secondarily, the study …

Alienation And Reconciliation In Social-Ecological Systems, Ann M. Eisenberg Jan 2017

Alienation And Reconciliation In Social-Ecological Systems, Ann M. Eisenberg

Faculty Publications

After rancher Ammon Bundy’s forceful occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to protest federal “tyranny” in 2016, mainstream commentary dismissed Bundy and his supporters as crackpots. But the dismissal of the occupation as errant overlooked this event’s significance. This conflict: 1) involved a clash over scarce natural resources, of the type that will likely gain more frequency and intensity in the face of climate change; and 2) highlighted the popular idea that the federal government and federal environmental regulations are the enemy of the (white, rural, male) worker. This thread of antienvironmental, anti-federal alienation among many working people has …

Global Gross Primary Productivity And Water Use Efficiency Changes Under Drought Stress, Zhen Yu, Jingxin Wang, Shirong Liu, James S. Rentch, Pengsen Sun, Chaoqun Lu Jan 2017

Global Gross Primary Productivity And Water Use Efficiency Changes Under Drought Stress, Zhen Yu, Jingxin Wang, Shirong Liu, James S. Rentch, Pengsen Sun, Chaoqun Lu

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Drought can affect the structure, composition and function of terrestrial ecosystems, yet drought impacts and post-drought recovery potentials of different land cover types have not been extensively studied at a global scale. We evaluated drought impacts on gross primary productivity (GPP), evapotranspiration (ET), and water use efficiency (WUE) of different global terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the drought-resilience of each ecosystem type during the period of 2000 to 2011. Using GPP as biome vitality indicator against drought stress, we developed a model to examine ecosystem resilience represented by the length of recovery days (LRD). LRD presented an evident gradient of …
