Turkish Journal of Biology

Magnetic gold nanoparticles are used in various biomedical, biochemistry, and biotechnology applications due to their controllable size distribution, long-term stability, reduced toxicity, and biocompatibility. Different coating materials, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and polyphenols, are applied to enhance the biocompatibility of nanoparticles. In this study, the effects of surface coatings of core-shell structured Fe@Au nanosphere magnetic nanoparticles with regard to antioxidant capacity and cytotoxic, anticarcinogenic, and genotoxic properties were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that avidin-coated Fe@Au nanospheres had higher antioxidant capacities than uncoated nanospheres. Neither avidin-coated nor uncoated nanoparticles had a cytotoxic effect on normal cells (human gingival fibroblast …

Amperometric Biosensor For Detection Of Triglyceride Tributyrinbased On Zero Point Charge Of Activated Carbon, Mohsen Rezvani, Ghasem Najafpour, Maedeh Mohammadi, Hossein Zare

Turkish Journal of Biology

A simple and robust single enzyme biosensor was fabricated for triglyceride (TG) detection. Graphite rods were modified with activated carbon (AC) and used as support for lipase immobilization. Chitosan (CHIT) was eventually used to create film on the bioelectrode and retain the immobilized enzyme. To extend the linear range of TG detection, AC was functionalized with carboxyl and then amine groups (AAC) to enhance the isoelectric point of AC. The constructed graphite/AAC/lipase /CHIT bioelectrode was characterized using cyclic voltammetry and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The accuracy of the developed biosensor was assessed through determination of different concentrations of …

The treatments were foliar spray of deionized water only (control), foliar spray of unirradiated chitosan (40 mg L-1), and ICN at 40, 80, 120, and 160 mg L-1. Among these, 80 mg L-1 ICN (treatment 4) proved to be the best for most …

Microrna-34a Regulates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factorin An Intracerebral Hemorrhage Model, Jin Hee Kim, Jae-Sun Choi Jan 2017

Microrna-34a Regulates Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factorin An Intracerebral Hemorrhage Model, Jin Hee Kim, Jae-Sun Choi

Turkish Journal of Biology

Intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs) are devastating neurological events frequently resulting in a serious negative prognosis. The exact physiological and disease processes involved in ICHs are complex, but are thought to involve microRNAs (miRNAs), 22 nucleotide small noncoding RNAs that control a variety of normal physiological and disease processes. In this study, we show that a miRNA, miR-34a, regulates BDNF in a model of ICH injury. In particular, we assessed the impact of AM34a, an inhibitor of miR-34a, on the toxicity of thrombin-induced apoptosis and on BDNF-mediated signaling. We investigated the increased expression of miR-34a after an ICH-induced thrombin toxicity injury using …

The Role Of Predicted Spermidine Family Transporters In Stressresponse And Cell Cycle In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Aslihan Gevrekci̇ Jan 2017

The Role Of Predicted Spermidine Family Transporters In Stressresponse And Cell Cycle In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Aslihan Gevrekci̇

Turkish Journal of Biology

Fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe has a variety of stress-signaling proteins that protect cells against environmental or intracellular stress. These proteins help the cells to respond to stress conditions and regulate intracellular functions such as cell division or gene expression. Polyamines (spermidine, spermine, and putrescine) are known to be important in the regulation of stress response and cell division. In this study, we tried to experimentally characterize novel S. pombe genes that are involved in the polyamine pathway and understand their potential roles. Sequence analysis revealed four genes that code for (predicted) spermidine family transporters in S. pombe. In an attempt …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The critical period of development is highly susceptible to disorders. Environmental contaminants, stress, and poor nutrition may permanently affect structurally and functionally an organism during adulthood. Protein restriction in intrauterine and neonatal periods may impair testicular cells and reduce steroidogenic activity. The current study investigated the effect of low protein diet during intrauterine and postnatal life on testicular function in immature and adult rats. Pregnant Wistar rats were fed either a normal protein diet or a low protein diet during pregnancy until birth and during lactation until weaning. The results showed that undernutrition during intrauterine life reduced epithelium height, tubular …

The selection of stably expressed reference genes is crucial for quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay when assessing osteosarcoma treated with cyclophosphamide (CTX) and Ginkgo biloba L. extract (EGB). We aimed to identify the reference genes that are stably expressed in human osteosarcoma cell lines after the above treatments. We used qRT-PCR assay to determine the expression levels of 18S, ACTB, ALAS1, GAPDH, TBP, HPRT1, RPL29, HMBS, PPIA, PUM1, GUSB, and B2M in the cell lines MG-63, Saos-2, and U2OS, which were treated with CTX or EGB or both. We analyzed the expression stability of these genes using geNorm, …

Autoregulation Of The Glial Gene Reversed Polarity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Chase Suiter Jan 2017

Autoregulation Of The Glial Gene Reversed Polarity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Chase Suiter

Honors Theses

Autoregulation is the process where an encoded protein is able to bind to and positively or negatively regulate its own expression. Autoregulatory loops are crucial for sustained gene expression, and such loops have been demonstrated to be important for development in organisms ranging from Danio rerio to Arabidopsis thaliana and Drosophila melanogaster. The cells of the nervous system arise from progenitor cells that eventually adopt one of two fates: neuronal or glial. This decision is controlled by glial cells missing; however glial cells missing is expressed briefly at the beginning development. The glial gene repo is a gene that is …

Emergency Department Use Among Asian Adults Living In The United States: Results From The National Health Interview Survey (2006 – 2013), Kathleen M. Sullivan, James Davis, Angela Sy

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

This paper presents secondary analyses of the National Health Interview Survey data focused on emergency department (ED) utilization among Asian adults residing in the United States. National Health Interview Survey data provided from survey years 2006-2013 was pooled and disaggregated by single-race Asian ethnic subgroups (Filipino, Chinese, Asian Indian, other Asian). We explored trends in reports of an ED visit over the survey years for the purpose of determining whether reports of an ED visit increased or decreased over survey years. We also explored background/biologic, environment, access to care, and behavior factors and their associations with having an ED visit. …

Do Step- And Biological Grandparents Show Differences In Investment And Emotional Closeness With Their Grandchildren?, Peter B. Gray, Elizabeth Brogdon

Anthropology Faculty Research

Human children are raised by a variety of caregivers including grandparents. A few studies have assessed potential differences in direct caregiving, financial expenditures, and emotional closeness between biological and step-grandparents. Drawing upon kin selection theory, we hypothesized that step-grandparents would provide less care and be less emotionally close to grandchildren than would biological grandparents. A sample of 341 heterosexual U.S. adults 25-35 years of age in a long-term partnership and with a biological child 5 years of age or younger were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Subjects provided sociodemographic information and answered questions about the dynamics between their own parent/stepparent …

Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan Jan 2017

Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan

Faculty Law Review Articles

Throughout the world water plays a central role in the spirituality of indigenous peoples. Focusing on the American West, this article first describes how tribal water needs touch upon the sacred and then explains how both federal law and state prior appropriation doctrine fail to adequately protect these important sacred views of water. Pivoting away from the classic federal law arguments, the article then advocates for an evolution in state water law regimes to provide yet unrecognized protections for tribal sacred waters. Because international law plays an increasing role in this issue, the article also explores case studies from Ireland, …

E2f Transcription Factor 1 And Its Role In The Cell Cycle And Tumor Suppressor Proteins, Thea Hisuler, Yu Kuang

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

E2F Transcription Factor 1 (E2F1) E2F1 is a transcription factor, in which its expression is increased in human cancers. “Transcription factor E2F1 binds to and activates transcription,” in return leading to increased transcription at the G1 and S phase of the cell cycle (Slansky). The E2F transcription factor family “plays a crucial role in the control of cell cycle and action of tumor suppressor proteins and is also a target of the transforming proteins of small DNA tumor viruses” (NCBI).

Synthetic Melanin Films As Potential Interfaces For Peroxynitrite Detection And Quantification, Haitham F. Kalil, Shaimaa Mahera, Tiyash Bosed, Ousama Al-Mahmoude, Clara Kay, Mekki Bayachou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Peroxynitrite (PON) is a highly reactive oxygen-nitrogen species that facilitates both oxidation and nitration reactions. Early reports have revealed the deleterious effects of PON on DNA, proteins, and lipids. Recent studies have suggested that melanin can act as an antioxidative therapy to scavenge the reactive oxygen-nitrogen species (RO-NS) including PON. Melanin is a natural pigment that has many physiological functions involving the neutralization of highly oxidative species. In this project, the interaction between PON and synthetic melanin has been studied. In addition, the electrochemical characteristics of the polymerized 5,6-dihydroxy indole (DHI) as a model of synthetic melanin were examined using …

Critics have long claimed that when the law regulates police behavior it inadvertently reduces officer aggressiveness, thereby increasing crime. This hypothesis has taken on new significance in recent years as prominent politicians and law enforcement leaders have argued that increased oversight of police officers in the wake of the events in Ferguson, Missouri has led to an increase in national crime rates. Using a panel of American law enforcement agencies and difference-in-difference regression analyses, this Article tests whether the introduction of public scrutiny or external regulation is associated with changes in crime rates. To do this, this Article relies on …
