In Situ Ph Determination Based On The Nmr Analysis Of ¹H-Nmr Signal Intensities And ¹⁹F-Nmr Chemical Shifts, Ming Huang
In Situ Ph Determination Based On The Nmr Analysis Of ¹H-Nmr Signal Intensities And ¹⁹F-Nmr Chemical Shifts, Ming Huang
Masters Theses
"The pH of an NMR sample can be measured directly by NMR experiments of signal intensities, chemical shifts, or relaxation time constants that depend on the pH. The 1H NMR peak intensities of the pH indicator phenolphthalein change as it changes from the OH-depleted form to the OH-rich form in the range of pH = 11.1 to 12.7. Because this range is rather small, another NMR technique was utilized based on 19F chemical shifts. The shift of F- in an aqueous solution of NaF changes in the alkaline range between pH = 11.0 and 14.0 and even …
Family-Based Association Studies Of Autism In Boys Via Facial-Feature Clusters, Luke Andrew Settles
Family-Based Association Studies Of Autism In Boys Via Facial-Feature Clusters, Luke Andrew Settles
Masters Theses
"Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a set of developmental disorders with varied attributes. Due to its substantial heterogeneity in terms of behavioral and clinical phenotypes, it is challenging to discern the genetic biomarkers behind ASD, even though the disease is known to be genetic in nature. This serves as a motivation to detect relationships between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a causal autism disease susceptibility locus (DSL) within more homogeneous subgroups. Recently, clinically meaningful subclassifications of ASD have been discovered utilizing facial features of prepubescent boys. Therefore, through the employment of data from 44 prepubertal Caucasian boys with ASD …

Towards A Better Understanding Of Indoor Exposure To Air Pollutants: Window Opening Occurrence In U.S. Residences, Gauri Dilip Date
Masters Theses
"Opening a window dramatically alters how we are exposed to air pollutants. Online questionnaire surveys were deployed to assess window-opening occurrence of the occupants of US homes. This information will be used to better quantify population exposure to pollutants of indoor and outdoor origin. Frequency distributions of demographics were generated which showed percentages of respondents who participated in the surveys from categories including gender, race, household income and occupancy. In April 2016, 49.3% of the people surveyed opened their windows for at least 1 hour in a day. This increased to 52.5% in September 2016 and reduced considerably to 24.4% …
A Review Of Random Matrix Theory With An Application To Biological Data, Jesse Aaron Marks
A Review Of Random Matrix Theory With An Application To Biological Data, Jesse Aaron Marks
Masters Theses
"Random matrix theory (RMT) is an area of study that has applications in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. The foundation of RMT is based on the analysis of the eigenvalue behavior of matrices. The eigenvalues of a random matrix (a matrix with stochastic entries) will behave differently than the eigenvalues from a matrix with non-random properties. Studying this bifurcation of the eigenvalue behavior provides the means to which system-specific signals can be distinguished from randomness. In particular, RMT provides an algorithmic approach to objectively remove noise from matrices with embedded signals.

Sentiment Analytics: Lexicons Construction And Analysis, Bo Yuan
Masters Theses
"With the increasing amount of text data, sentiment analysis (SA) is becoming more and more important. An automated approach is needed to parse the online reviews and comments, and analyze their sentiments. Since lexicon is the most important component in SA, enhancing the quality of lexicons will improve the efficiency and accuracy of sentiment analysis. In this research, the effect of coupling a general lexicon with a specialized lexicon (for a specific domain) and its impact on sentiment analysis was presented. Two special domains and one general domain were studied. The two special domains are the petroleum domain and the …
Hydrogeochemical Controls On Reactive And Nonreactive Solute Transport In Heterogenous Porous Media, Mahta Gholizadeh Ansari
Hydrogeochemical Controls On Reactive And Nonreactive Solute Transport In Heterogenous Porous Media, Mahta Gholizadeh Ansari
Masters Theses
"This work examines how physical and chemical heterogeneity can affect reactive and non-reactive transport in porous media. The effect of heterogeneity of the porous media is investigated both on dissolution rate of magnesite and attenuation time of nonreactive contaminants in non-reactive media. Various spatial distribution were created using statistical parameters in PETREL.A total of 6793 transport modeling simulations were run using CrunchFlow. Lasso regression was used to select most significant features and those features are then used in linear regression and deep learning models.
The magnesite dissolution simulations were performed under different permeability ratios (magnesite /sand permeability) and inlet pH. …

Diffusion And Mechanical Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Enabled Diffusion Controlled Materials, Joseph Louis Volpe
Diffusion And Mechanical Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Enabled Diffusion Controlled Materials, Joseph Louis Volpe
Masters Theses
"Nanoparticle-enabled diffusion control has been shown to rapidly refine multiphase microstructures during slowly cooled casting. This thesis characterizes the diffusion and the mechanical properties of nanoparticle-enabled diffusion controlled materials. To characterize diffusion properties, in situ characterization is performed to verify the nanoparticle enabled diffusion control mechanism. Materials with nanoparticles were observed to decrease the diffusion coefficient by at least one order of magnitude under similar melting conditions as compared to materials without nanoparticles. To understand mechanical properties, the nanoparticles that assembled at the growing interface were characterized under mechanical tensile stress. Nanoparticle-enabled interfaces were observed to improve the interface bond …

Comparing Region Level Testing Methods For Differential Dna Methylation Analysis, Arnold Albert Harder
Masters Theses
”Finding possible connections and solutions to help fight progression of diseases is a major area of research. Genomics is a primary path of research in disease research. Through the DNA sequence, possible connections to diseases have been found. However, most methods for fixing issues within a DNA sequence are still out of reach. One potential path is to investigate epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation. DNA methylation occurs when a methyl group attached to cytosines on the DNA sequence. Statistical methods can be used to identify sites or regions of significant differences in methylation levels between groups ( e. g. …

The Rna Polymerase-Associated Factor 1 Complex Is Required For Plant Touch Responses, Gregory S. Jensen, Kateryna Fal, Olivier Hamant, Elizabeth S. Haswell
Biology Faculty Research
Thigmomorphogenesis is a stereotypical developmental alteration in the plant body plan that can be induced by repeatedly touching plant organs. To unravel how plants sense and record multiple touch stimuli we performed a novel forward genetic screen based on the development of a shorter stem in response to repetitive touch. The touch insensitive (ths1) mutant identified in this screen is defective in some aspects of shoot and root thigmomorphogenesis. The ths1 mutant is an intermediate loss-of-function allele of VERNALIZATION INDEPENDENCE 3 (VIP3), a previously characterized gene whose product is part of the RNA polymerase II-associated factor 1 …

Aim
Two fundamental questions about human language demand answers: why are so many languages spoken today and why is their geographical distribution so uneven? Although hypotheses have been proposed for centuries, the processes that determine patterns of linguistic and cultural diversity remain poorly understood. Previous studies, which relied on correlative, curve-fitting approaches, have produced contradictory results. Here we present the first application of process-based simulation modelling, derived from macroecology, to examine the distribution of human groups and their languages.
Location
The Australian continent is used as a case study to demonstrate the power of simulation modelling for identifying processes shaping …
Effects Of Fertilizer And Shade Management On Nitrogen Mineralization, Nitrifying Microbial Abundance And Nitrogen-Fixing Capacity Of Erythrina Poeppigiana In Coffee (Coffea Arabica) Agroforestry Systems In Costa Rica, Stuart E. Barker Iii
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Worldwide chemical fertilizer use has increased by four times during the last 50 years. Conventional agricultural systems have a high nitrifying nature, resulting in a loss of nearly 70% of overall nitrogen (N) fertilizer inputs, an estimated economic loss of $81 billion. Over application of fertilizer is rampant in tropical developing nations in Central America, where coffee is major crop. Agroforestry offers ecologically sustainable land management strategies that promote the provision of ecosystem services such as, protection of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and water and soil regulation. When legume trees are incorporated as the shade tree in coffee production, direct …
Approaches Toward Novel 1,2,3-Triazole Sensors For The Detection Of Anions And Heavy Metal Cations, Richard D. Govan
Approaches Toward Novel 1,2,3-Triazole Sensors For The Detection Of Anions And Heavy Metal Cations, Richard D. Govan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Cations and anions play pivotal roles in biological and physiological processes, however an imbalance in concentration of any ion can be detrimental. Therefore, research into the selective recognition of anions and heavy metal cations has acquired much attention. One approach involves the use of chemosensors. Upon interaction with targeted analytes, chemosensors produce a distinct response, in some cases a fluorescent or colorimetric signal. The 1,2,3-triazole unit has much potential as a chemical sensor due to its unique photophysical properties. The specificity, selectivity, and signaling mechanism of triazole sensors can be tuned with conjugation in the motif and choice and placement …
Connecting The Dots: A Food Web Of The Lower Ogeechee River, Allison K. Lutz
Connecting The Dots: A Food Web Of The Lower Ogeechee River, Allison K. Lutz
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Ogeechee is a fifth order river that originates in the Georgia Piedmont region and flows through the Coastal Plain region in the Southeastern portion of the state. The Ogeechee is one of the last unregulated rivers in Georgia; allowing for studies to occur under a natural flow regime. To my knowledge, studies that incorporate fish into ecological networks (e.g., food webs) are yet to be developed for the Ogeechee River, thus, one of the main objectives of this research was to address this knowledge gap. Five fish species were collected from June 2016 to October 2016 in order to …
The Role Of Habitat Management In Shaping Predation, Animal Color, And Gene Flow In A Metapopulation Of Florida Scrub Lizards (Sceloporus Woodi), Richard William Orton
The Role Of Habitat Management In Shaping Predation, Animal Color, And Gene Flow In A Metapopulation Of Florida Scrub Lizards (Sceloporus Woodi), Richard William Orton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Anthropogenic disturbance is known to affect biological diversity at the community, species, and genetic levels. Habitat fragmentation, in particular, has been shown to impact predator abundance and distribution, impede dispersal, and augment genetic drift. In small populations, which often result from habitat fragmentation, the effects of human disturbance may be disproportionately expressed. Small populations are more susceptible to selection pressures and random drift because genetic and phenotypic frequencies can become rapidly fixed, in comparison to larger populations. In turn, fixation of maladaptive alleles or morphs can accelerate extinction. For example, cryptic color polymorphism can be maintained by apostatic selection, where …
Antibiotics And Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria In Coastal Plain Streams, Jason Duff
Antibiotics And Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria In Coastal Plain Streams, Jason Duff
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Streams across the United States and globally are influenced by environmental contamination, including antibiotics, which enter streams due to widespread use and multiple pathways into the environment. Antibiotics are also likely to enter streams in mixture with other contaminants that alter the effects on aquatic organisms. Furthermore, antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter streams through similar pathways as antibiotics with implications for natural microbial communities. Therefore, understanding the presence and effects of antibiotic-contaminant mixtures and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in streams is important for resource management.
Chapter one describes an experiment that tested the hypothesis that the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) alone influences phytoplankton communities differently …

Cultivating Ecological Literacy And Rethinking Our Connections To Nature, Sean Fretwell
Cultivating Ecological Literacy And Rethinking Our Connections To Nature, Sean Fretwell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation I explore the complex, often contested, relationships between humankind and nature. I consider the changing state of these relationships as they are influenced by factors rooted in science, technology, and economics. I also examine these relationships as they relate to human activities with agriculture. Considering the present state of environmental crisis and the abundance of evidence indicating the deleterious activities of humankind as primary causes for the many global calamities, I argue for revising industrially-driven ideologies; particularly those driven by the economic paradigm of capitalism and self-interest. Additionally, I submit that a return to kinship with nature …

Specifically, the relationship between perceived stress and problematic SNS usage was statistically significant for students with a lower level of …
Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil
Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We examine two proposed indexing algorithms taking advantage of the new SSMinT libraries. The two algorithms primarily differ in their selection of documents for learning. The batch indexing method selects some random number of documents for learning. The iterative indexing method uses a single randomly selected document to discover semantic signatures, which are then used to find additional related documents. The batch indexing method discovers one to three semantic signatures per document, resulting in poor clustering performance as evaluated by human cross-validation of clusters using the Adjusted Rand Index. The iterative indexing method discovers more semantic signatures per document, resulting …
Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acid mine drainage (AMD) and municipal wastewater (MWW) are two major pollution sources in headwaters of Appalachia and energy producing regions worldwide. Incorporating the prevalent chemistry of the two wastes in designing treatment technologies for concurrent management of the wastes can provide multi-faceted benefits. First, alkalinity in MWW can raise the pH of AMD upon mixing, and promote chemical precipitation of metal hydroxides and carbonates. Second, low solubility of phosphate with multivalent metals (e.g., Fe and Al) can be an effective mechanism for recovering phosphate from MWW. Third, sulfate ions from AMD can serve as an electron acceptor for oxidation …

Elucidating Function In Early Diverging Non-Flagellated Fungi Using Metabolomics And Proteomics, Gregory R. Boyce
Elucidating Function In Early Diverging Non-Flagellated Fungi Using Metabolomics And Proteomics, Gregory R. Boyce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The obligate lifestyle of many of the early diverging non-flagellated fungi have long precluded them from functional studies reserved primarily for their easily cultured, more derived counterparts. Modern --omics--based tools including transciptomics, proteomics and metabolomics have facilitated a better understanding of many fungi but have yet to be employed in the study of early diverging non-flagellated fungi with few exceptions. Using global and targeted metabolomics and prototeomics across the symbiotic spectrum, a series of studies were undertaken to better understand metabolism of three symbiotic interactions: two AM fungus-plant associations including Rhizophagus dimorphicus -- grass, R. clarus -- legume, and one …
Corticospinal Excitability During Locomotion In Humans, Lisa Kogan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coordination between signals from cortical structures and spinal segmental pathways responsible for the control of locomotion remains a contentious issue in human motor control. The signals are known to be integrated, but the nature of these neural calculations is unknown. To understand these interactions in humans, noninvasive cortical stimulation techniques can be combined with detailed analyses of muscle activity patterns in locomotor tasks.;In this study, I tested the relationship between corticospinal inputs and the forward velocity of each limb. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in 12 healthy human volunteers during locomotion on …

Comprehensive Analyses Of Mirna And Dna Methylation In 17beta-Estradiol Exposed Juvenile Rainbow Trout Skeletal Muscle, Prasanthi P. Koganti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reproductive development in female teleosts like rainbow trout starts with release of the sex steroid estrogen, necessary for synthesis of the egg yolk protein vitellogenin. Increase in estrogen secretion during these reproductive phases results in increased energy demands. Skeletal muscle serves as an immediate endogenous source to address energy demands during vitellogenesis and spawning due to which it undergoes rapid degradation resulting in water accumulation, poor fillet and low egg quality. An imbalance in protein turnover is observed not only because of rapid increase in degradative pathways but also due to decreased protein synthesis. These changes in protein metabolism in …
An Action Plan For Youth Involvement Leadership At Francois In Martinique, Louise R. Nocandy
An Action Plan For Youth Involvement Leadership At Francois In Martinique, Louise R. Nocandy
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Youth involvement leadership in Seventh-day Adventist local churches remains an issue of concern. Part of the vision of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church and the local church is to encourage the youth to be faithful disciples of Christ and to teach, train, equip, and involve them in the Seventh-day Adventist local churches. However, the Annual Local Churches Strategic Plan is not intentionally oriented towards youth involvement leadership and the Annual Youth Strategic Plans are generally not based on the vision for the entire church. This gap reveals a lack of partnership between the youth department and most other departments …
