Causes Of Satisfaction And Disatisfaction For Diversity Resident Librarians – A Mixed Methods Study Using Herzberg’S Motivation-Hygiene Theory, Jason Kelly Alston
Causes Of Satisfaction And Disatisfaction For Diversity Resident Librarians – A Mixed Methods Study Using Herzberg’S Motivation-Hygiene Theory, Jason Kelly Alston
Theses and Dissertations
Diversity residency librarian programs are post-MLIS programs aimed at providing recently graduated professionals with real work experience, with the expressed goal of recruiting and retaining a more-diverse workforce in professional librarianship.
This mixed-method study is one of the first empirical studies examining diversity residencies, which – at the time of this writing – have existed for more than 30 years. The study identifies concerns raised in the mostly anecdotal literature about diversity residencies, and 102 individuals identified as current or former diversity resident librarians participated in the quantitative portion of the study. In the quantitative portion of this study, there …
Early Life Factors And Health Outcomes In Children And Mothers, Olubunmi Olufunke Orekoya
Early Life Factors And Health Outcomes In Children And Mothers, Olubunmi Olufunke Orekoya
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focused on early life exposures and their impact on children and mothers’ health. It consists of three distinct studies with an overarching goal of understanding how early life factors influence health outcomes among children and mothers. The broad aims are: 1) to examine the association between maternal gestational weight gain and offspring weight at 1 year, while assessing the mediating role of birth weight; 2) to determine the association between breastfeeding practices and development of allergic conditions (eczema/skin allergy, hay fever/respiratory allergy, and asthma); and 3) to examine the association between breastfeeding and postpartum weight retention at 12 …
Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry For Real-Time Metal Speciation Analysis, Hettige. M. Thushani Siriwardhane
Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry For Real-Time Metal Speciation Analysis, Hettige. M. Thushani Siriwardhane
Theses and Dissertations
Electrochemistry is a powerful analytical tool that has been widely used to detect trace metals in natural systems. However, studying the speciation of metals during dynamic events, such as storms and floods, is analytically challenging due to the limited temporal resolution of traditional electrochemical techniques. Additionally, most techniques report the total metal concentration (both complexed and free) that does not reflect the toxicity of these metals, which arise mostly from the free state. To overcome these issues, we previously pioneered the use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to measure free copper (Cu(II)) and lead (Pb(II)) in real-time in laboratory …
Formative Assessment Strategies For Mathematical Thinking: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Benjamin J. Sinwell
Formative Assessment Strategies For Mathematical Thinking: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Benjamin J. Sinwell
Theses and Dissertations
Developing Formative Assessment Strategies for Mathematical Thinking is a qualitative action research study that investigates how one mathematics teacher implements formative assessment strategies aimed at impacting students’ mathematical thinking in two geometry classes a southern Title I public high school. This study is predicated on the notion that when students share their mathematical thinking in class, it stimulates classroom discussion and discourse and provides evidence vis-à-vis formative assessments that the teacher can use to improve mathematics curriculum and instruction. The study is theoretically grounded in Wiliam and Thompson’s (2007) Five Key Formative Assessment Strategies that include: 1. Clarifying and Sharing; …
Towards Gender Inclusive Representation In The Theatre: The Actor And The Spectator, Jeanette Thomas
Towards Gender Inclusive Representation In The Theatre: The Actor And The Spectator, Jeanette Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
This piece of writing is aimed at theatre practitioners who might not have a background in feminist critical theory. Its main function is to help these practitioners to aware of how they might- in the theatre- propagate gender stereotypes. It provides thorough and accessible explanations of the concepts central to feminist critical theory. It argues that in order to create a truly inclusive theatre, the spectator and the actor must be resistant towards gender-based oppression.
Structural And Functional Studies Of Proteins From The Agricultural Pests Tetranychus Urticae And Aspergillus Fumigatus, Caleb Schlachter
Structural And Functional Studies Of Proteins From The Agricultural Pests Tetranychus Urticae And Aspergillus Fumigatus, Caleb Schlachter
Theses and Dissertations
Agricultural pests are a worldwide problem and cause billions of dollars in crop loss. In the United States alone, an estimated $40 billion USD is lost per year due to insecticide resistance [1]. Studied here are proteins (potentially new pesticide targets) from the agricultural pests Tetranychus urticae and Aspergillus fumigatus. T. urticae, or twospotted spidermite, is a polyphagous pest, and three proteins from this pest, a cyanase, a glutathione S-transferase and an intradiol ring-cleavage dioxygenase are described [2]. Cyanase is involved in the conversion of bicarbonate and cyanate, a toxic self-defense metabolite produced by plants, into ammonia and carbon dioxide. …
Mismatch Tolerance During Homologous Recombination In Mammalian Cells, Shen Li
Mismatch Tolerance During Homologous Recombination In Mammalian Cells, Shen Li
Theses and Dissertations
Homologous recombination (HR) serves critical roles in DNA repair to maintain genome stability, and the malfunction of HR contributes to carcinogenesis and cancer development. Current research focuses on the regulation against deleterious recombination between imperfectly matching sequences, which has been documented in certain myeloid leukemias, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancers and other genetic diseases. Homology dependency of recombination was examined in cultured thymidine kinase-deficient mouse fibroblasts. Cells have chromosomal integration of DNA constructs harboring a herpes tk gene (the “recipient”) and a closely linked truncated “donor” tk sequence. The recipient was rendered non-functional by insertion of the recognition site for endonuclease …
Pediatric Genetic Counselor Perspective On Serving The Foster Care Population And The Integration Of Genetic Information Within The Health Passport, Angela Rose Douglas
Pediatric Genetic Counselor Perspective On Serving The Foster Care Population And The Integration Of Genetic Information Within The Health Passport, Angela Rose Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
Many states within the foster care system have adopted a document referred to as the health passport, which provides a condensed summary of a child's health history. This passport is intended to remain with the child as he/she moves between placements to improve communication between foster parents, caseworkers, and medical professionals. This exploratory research study examines the foster care system's utility of a child's health passport and opportunities for improvement through an online survey of the pediatric genetic counselor population. First, counselor perspectives on serving foster children were gathered and summarized into themes. Major elements and/or obstacles of counseling the …
Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes discourses concerning odor within the Atlantic World from approximately 1492 until 1838. Numerous historians and philosophers have described how the Reformation’s emphasis on texts and an increased concentration on visual science during the Enlightenment influenced Western Europeans to heighten the importance of the eye to the detriment of the lower sense of smell. This dissertation begins by thinking about materialist contours of this olfactory decline through a linguistic analysis of sulfur within seventeenth century England. It then proceeds to examine how in the early Americas such a repudiation of the sense of smell did not occur. The …

Recipients’ Perspectives Regarding Expanded Carrier Screening Of Gamete Donors, Erika Kristy Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This study explored the perspectives of intended parents regarding genetic carrier screening of a gamete donor. The main goal of this study was to determine how much genetic carrier screening information a recipient would prefer to receive about potential donors. The study also aimed to identify factors that potentially influence a recipient’s choice of donor based on genetic screening results. Methods: An online questionnaire was developed to assess intended parents’ preferences regarding expanded carrier screening (ECS) of their donors. Participants were recruited from various online support groups and were eligible if they had previously utilized or were currently utilizing …
Rebirth Of The House Museum: Commemorating Reconstruction At The Woodrow Wilson Family Home, Jennifer Whitmer Taylor
Rebirth Of The House Museum: Commemorating Reconstruction At The Woodrow Wilson Family Home, Jennifer Whitmer Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Rebirth of a House Museum traces the transformation of the Woodrow Wilson Family Home (WWFH) in Columbia, South Carolina from an eighty year-old presidential shrine to the nation’s first museum of Reconstruction. A semi-guided house tour with limited objects and grounded in a specific time and place modernized an outdated historic house museum (HHM). The house became the primary artifact, supported by a panel exhibit and five original Wilson family objects. Critical to the exhibit’s success were the docents, who also steer this manuscript via their oral histories and fill a void in public history literature. Like Reconstruction, the reinterpretation …
From Rice Fields To Duck Marshes: Sport Hunters And Environmental Change On The South Carolina Coast, 1890–1950, Matthew Allen Lockhart
From Rice Fields To Duck Marshes: Sport Hunters And Environmental Change On The South Carolina Coast, 1890–1950, Matthew Allen Lockhart
Theses and Dissertations
In part because some historians are ethically opposed to their avocation, sport hunters of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era are an understudied group. As environmental actors, they have been virtually ignored. Based on the biological traits of their quarry, one particular subset of sportsmen, waterfowl hunters, were especially disposed to manipulating the environment in which they hunted. Their efforts to attract migratory waterfowl to privately owned wetlands through habitat management, which started nearly a half-century before federal engineers and biologists undertook similar work on the national wildlife refuges in the 1930s, were pioneering. By the midpoint of the twentieth …
Manifestations Of Corporal Oppression – Embodiments Of Culturalpolitical Resistance: The Representation Of The Body In German Literature Of The Long Nineteenth Century, Hans Niehues
Theses and Dissertations
The “long nineteenth century” was subject to various social, economic, political and cultural changes that were propelled by the Enlightenment and industrialization. This alteration of human life also had a physical dimension. It generated new bodypolitics and conceptions of labor which had a significant impact on the human body. This project is concerned with the changing experience of human physicality in the long nineteenth century and how it is reflected in German literature of the time. I study the trope of the body in Gerhart Hauptmann’s Die Weber, Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck and Franz Kafka’s Die Verwandlung. I reveal how the …
Robustness Evaluation For Phylogenetic Reconstruction Methods And Evolutionary Models Reconstruction Of Tumor Progression, Jun Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
During evolutionary history, genomes evolve by DNA mutation, genome rearrangement, duplication and gene loss events. There has been endless effort to the phylogenetic and ancestral genome inference study. Due to the great development of various technology, the information about genomes is exponentially increasing, which make it possible figure the problem out. The problem has been shown so interesting that a great number of algorithms have been developed rigorously over the past decades in attempts to tackle these problems following different kind of principles. However, difficulties and limits in performance and capacity, and also low consistency largely prevent us from confidently …
Endocrine Disruption In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) From A Pcb-Contaminated Reservoir, Stephanie B. Laplaca
Endocrine Disruption In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) From A Pcb-Contaminated Reservoir, Stephanie B. Laplaca
Theses and Dissertations
There are numerous cases of intersex condition in fish, specifically immature oocytes in testicular tissue, documented in recent literature. Typically, these cases identify a point source input of endocrine disrupting compounds impacting the fish, such as wastewater treatment effluent. Legacy contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been suggested as endocrine disruptors in fish species. The objective of this study was to assess endocrine disruption in wild largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from exposure to PCBs at a Superfund site in South Carolina on Lake Hartwell (SV-107), where high levels of PCBs in sediment and fish tissue samples have been detected …

Theses and Dissertations
Anisotropic wide-bandgap gallium selenide (GaSe) crystals were grown using high purity (7N) Ga and zone refined (ZR) Se precursor materials. The crystal growth was performed using a modified vertical Bridgman method (VBM) with a slow crystallization from the melt and with a pre-determined temperature profile. The structure, surface morphology, and the composition of the grown crystals were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive analysis by x-rays (EDAX), respectively. Optical absorption and transmission properties were characterized and optical bandgap was determined. Electrical resistivity has been determined using current-voltage (I V) measurements using van der Pauw …
The Relationship Of Life Stage To Daily Social Patterns Of Captive African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana) And The Correlation Of Handler Perceptions Of Elephant Personality To Demonstrated Social Behaviors, Alison Jeffrey
Honors Theses and Capstones
Elephants typically have very strong social bonds, and social interactions can include affiliative, agonistic, or ambiguous behaviors. The social interactions and dominance hierarchy between individuals of a herd depend upon many factors, including maternal lineage, age, and sex. This study was designed to determine how social behaviors among a herd of captive African elephants varied throughout the day and to establish if the frequency of social interactions and age class were correlated. The study also aimed to determine if handler perceptions of elephant personality were an accurate predictor of the type and frequency of social behaviors observed, in addition to …
The Effect Of Alcohol Prep Pads And Blood Drop Number On Capillary Blood Glucose Values, Joanna E. Foos
The Effect Of Alcohol Prep Pads And Blood Drop Number On Capillary Blood Glucose Values, Joanna E. Foos
Honors Theses and Capstones
Capillary blood glucose monitoring is a common nursing procedure. However, no consensus exists regarding which drop of blood to test (drop 1 vs. drop 2) and whether using alcohol pads to prepare the fingertip affects blood glucose values. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of these factors and contribute to the development of evidence-based nursing protocols for capillary blood glucose monitoring. A quantitative, quasi-experimental study was conducted in a laboratory at the University of New Hampshire. 96 volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Each group underwent a pair of capillary blood glucose tests …
Localization Of Cck(+) Neurons In The Sensory Pathways Of Mus Musculis, Zachary Ryan Tepper
Localization Of Cck(+) Neurons In The Sensory Pathways Of Mus Musculis, Zachary Ryan Tepper
Honors Theses and Capstones
With dependence upon opioids, such as codeine, morphine, and heroin, steadily increasing amongst the American public, the withdrawal symptoms associated with disuse are receiving much more attention. Our research identifies neurons that are implicated in the hyperanalgesic response to the cessation of opiate-medication after dependence has been established. These neurons are identified by the Cholecystokinin protein (CCK). The first chapter of this research focuses on localizing these neurons in regions of the central nervous system that are responsible for transducing painful signals from the periphery to the brain. Our research supports the hypothesis that neurons with high levels of CCK …

A Changing Gulf Of Maine: Investigating The Role Of Benthic Water Temperature In Determining The Timing Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias) Arrival And Departure In The Gulf Of Maine, Benjamin Donald Gallo
Honors Theses and Capstones
Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is a highly migratory elasmobranch that undergoes annual migrations along the East Coast of the United States. Spiny dogfish have been studied extensively on the West Coast, but little information currently exists on the life history of this species in the Gulf of Maine (GOM). In the last few years, commercial gillnet fishermen in the GOM have been reporting unusual catch patterns while fishing offshore, perhaps indicating an increased abundance in dogfish and an extension of the length of time that dogfish occupy the GOM in a given year. Concurrent with these changes, rising …
Ipo Ready? Illuminating The Dark Box Of Private Equity, Tyler Gregory Cornellier
Ipo Ready? Illuminating The Dark Box Of Private Equity, Tyler Gregory Cornellier
Honors Theses and Capstones
The use of public equity data can help combat the challenges private equity funds currently face regarding data availability. The goal is to create a model to provide guidance to both investors and entrepreneurs in the decision-making process. The data gathered would provide insight on how close a private company is to a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO). The idea is that a model, showing the average financial metrics of companies within certain industries during an IPO, can provide new perceptiveness as to how the private company is performing.

Assessment Of The Intake And Knowledge Of Folate/Folic Acid Among Unh Students, Jessica Lee Pelletier, Ruth Reilly, Sherman Bigornia
Honors Theses and Capstones
There are 3,000 U.S. pregnancies affected by spina bifida and anencephaly annually. If women consume adequate amounts of folic acid (400 mcg/day) one month before pregnancy and through the first trimester, then the risk of their infant developing a neural tube defect (NTD) is reduced by 50-70%. However, approximately 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, with some of the highest rates among 18-24 year olds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge source, knowledge level, and intake of folic acid among college-aged students. Qualtrics surveys from 96 subjects (87.5% female, aged 18-24) were used for analysis. In the …
Radiation Therapy Medical Physics Review – Delivery, Interactions, Safety, Feasibility, And Head To Head Comparisons Of The Leading Radiation Therapy Techniques, Cielle Collins
Honors Theses and Capstones
Radiation therapy uses high energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy for cancer treatment can take the form of photon therapy (using x-rays and gamma rays), or charged particle therapy including proton therapy and electron therapy. Within these categories, numerous methods of delivery have been developed. For example, a certain type of radiation can be administered by a machine outside of the body, called external-beam radiation therapy, or by a “seed” placed inside of the body near cancer cells, called internal radiation therapy or brachytherapy. Approximately half of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy, and the form of radiation …
Boldness And Natural Behaviors In The African Lion (Panthera Leo): How Are They Related?, Courtney M. Kamyk
Boldness And Natural Behaviors In The African Lion (Panthera Leo): How Are They Related?, Courtney M. Kamyk
Honors Theses and Capstones
The African lion (Panthera leo) population is diminishing rapidly, approximately 43% since 1993 (Bauer et al., 2016. The species is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN (Bauer et al., 2016). With numerous threats to current populations including human conflict, prey depletion and habitat loss the African lion is in danger of becoming endangered or even critically endangered in the near future. Ex-situ conservation is a proposed method of restoring populations. The current study focuses on correlations of boldness with natural behaviors and sociality to further understand individual personality in hopes of connecting it with success after reintroduction. …
What Can Research On Nonhumans Tell Us About Human Dissonance?, Jennifer Vonk
What Can Research On Nonhumans Tell Us About Human Dissonance?, Jennifer Vonk
Animal Sentience
Zentall’s thoughtful review of the literature on cognitive dissonance in nonhumans helps to highlight the common finding that similar outcomes in humans and nonhumans can be attributed to different underlying mechanisms. I advocate a more fully comparative approach to the underlying mechanisms, avoiding the assumption of shared processes in humans and nonhumans.
To Identify All The Relevant Factors Is To Explain Feeling, Arthur S. Reber
To Identify All The Relevant Factors Is To Explain Feeling, Arthur S. Reber
Animal Sentience
Several additional comments on Reber (2016a) have appeared. Like those addressed in Reber (2016b), they reflect points of agreement and disagreement on various elements of my Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC) model. Some, however, seem to have missed key points. I'm willing to take some responsibility for this. Perhaps I was not clear about some of the more radical points of the model. Hopefully the case-by-case review here will help.
Wrinkling Of Functionally Graded Sandwich Structures Subject To Biaxial And In-Plane Shear Loads, Harold Costa
Wrinkling Of Functionally Graded Sandwich Structures Subject To Biaxial And In-Plane Shear Loads, Harold Costa
Masters Theses
"Benefits of a functionally graded core increasing wrinkling stability of sandwich panels have been demonstrated in a recent paper [1] where a several-fold increase in the wrinkling stress was observed, without a significant weight penalty, using a stiffer core adjacent to the facings. In the present paper wrinkling is analyzed in case where the facings are subject to biaxial compression and/or in-plane shear loading and the core is arbitrary graded through-the-thickness. Two issues addressed are the effect of biaxial or in-plane shear loads on wrinkling stability of panels with both graded and ungraded core and the verification that functional grading …

Biodegradable Capacitive Pressure Sensor Toward Temporary Implants For Intervertebral Pressure Monitoring, Devdatt Chattopadhyay
Masters Theses
"The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate a new class of implantable biomedical device, based on biodegradable borate glass as the substrate material that can be potentially used to monitor the intervertebral pressure in the lumbar region of the human body. Two major types of implantable biomedical devices include the permanent prosthetic devices such as pacemakers and the temporary implants for short-term intervention and monitoring. Unless surgically removed after their intended operation, the temporary implants are left inside the body causing electromagnetic issues, latent complications and various biomechanical safety concerns. In order to address this issue, a new device …

In Situ Ph Determination Based On The Nmr Analysis Of ¹H-Nmr Signal Intensities And ¹⁹F-Nmr Chemical Shifts, Ming Huang
Masters Theses
"The pH of an NMR sample can be measured directly by NMR experiments of signal intensities, chemical shifts, or relaxation time constants that depend on the pH. The 1H NMR peak intensities of the pH indicator phenolphthalein change as it changes from the OH-depleted form to the OH-rich form in the range of pH = 11.1 to 12.7. Because this range is rather small, another NMR technique was utilized based on 19F chemical shifts. The shift of F- in an aqueous solution of NaF changes in the alkaline range between pH = 11.0 and 14.0 and even …
