Sexually Dimorphic Aggression Indicates Male Gray Wolves Specialize In Pack Defense Against Conspecific Groups, Kira A. Cassidy, L. David Mech, Daniel R. Macnulty, Daniel R. Stahler, Douglas W. Smith
Sexually Dimorphic Aggression Indicates Male Gray Wolves Specialize In Pack Defense Against Conspecific Groups, Kira A. Cassidy, L. David Mech, Daniel R. Macnulty, Daniel R. Stahler, Douglas W. Smith
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Aggression directed at conspecific groups is common among gregarious, territorial species, and for some species such as gray wolves (Canis lupus) intraspecific strife is the leading cause of natural mortality. Each individual in a group likely has different measures of the costs and benefits associated with a group task, such as an aggressive attack on another group, which can alter motivation and behavior. We observed 292 inter-pack aggressive interactions in Yellowstone National Park between 1 April 1995 and 1 April 2011 (>5300 days of observation) in order to determine the role of both sexes, and the influence of pack, …

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We tested serum samples from 387 free-ranging wolves (Canis lupus) from 2007 to 2013 for exposure to eight canid pathogens to establish baseline data on disease prevalence and spatial distribution in Minnesota’s wolf population. We found high exposure to canine adenoviruses 1 and 2 (88% adults, 45% pups), canine parvovirus (82% adults, 24% pups), and Lyme disease (76% adults, 39% pups). Sixty-six percent of adults and 36% of pups exhibited exposure to the protozoan parasite Neospora caninum. Exposure to arboviruses was confirmed, including West Nile virus (37% adults, 18% pups) and eastern equine encephalitis (3% adults). Exposure rates …

Relating Nanoscale Accessibility Within Plant Cell Walls To Improved Enzyme Hydrolysis Yields In Corn Stover Subjected To Diverse Pretreatments, Jacob D. Crowe, Rachael A. Zarger, David B. Hodge
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Simultaneous chemical modification and physical reorganization of plant cell walls via alkaline hydrogen peroxide or liquid hot water pretreatment can alter cell wall structural properties impacting nanoscale porosity. Nanoscale porosity was characterized using solute exclusion to assess accessible pore volumes, water retention value as a proxy for accessible water−cell walls surface area, and solute-induced cell wall swelling to measure cell wall rigidity. Key findings concluded that delignification by alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment decreased cell wall rigidity and that the subsequent cell wall swelling resulted increased nanoscale porosity and improved enzyme binding and hydrolysis compared to limited swelling and increased accessible …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We report enhancements of glyoxal and methylglyoxal relative to carbon monoxide and formaldehyde in agricultural biomass burning plumes intercepted by the NOAA WP-3D aircraft during the 2013 Southeast Nexus and 2015 Shale Oil and Natural Gas Nexus campaigns. Glyoxal and methylglyoxal were measured using broadband cavity enhanced spectroscopy, which for glyoxal provides a highly selective and sensitive measurement. While enhancement ratios of other species such as methane and formaldehyde were consistent with previous measurements, glyoxal enhancements relative to carbon monoxide averaged 0.0016 ± 0.0009, a factor of 4 lower than values used in global models. Glyoxal enhancements relative to formaldehyde …
Comparisons Of Airborne Measurements And Inventory Estimates Of Methane Emissions In The Alberta Upstream Oil And Gas Sector, Matthew R. Johnson, David R. Tyner, Stephen Conley, Stefan Schwietzke, Daniel Zavala-Araiza
Comparisons Of Airborne Measurements And Inventory Estimates Of Methane Emissions In The Alberta Upstream Oil And Gas Sector, Matthew R. Johnson, David R. Tyner, Stephen Conley, Stefan Schwietzke, Daniel Zavala-Araiza
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Airborne measurements of methane emissions from oil and gas infrastructure were completed over two regions of Alberta, Canada. These top-down measurements were directly compared with region-specific bottom-up inventories that utilized current industry-reported flaring and venting volumes (reported data) and quantitative estimates of unreported venting and fugitive sources. For the 50 × 50 km measurement region near Red Deer, characterized by natural gas and light oil production, measured methane fluxes were more than 17 times greater than that derived from directly reported data but consistent with our region-specific bottom-up inventory-based estimate. For the 60 × 60 km measurement region near Lloydminster, …
Observational Datasets Used In Climate Studies (Appendix A), Donald Wuebbles
Observational Datasets Used In Climate Studies (Appendix A), Donald Wuebbles
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Observations, including those from satellites, mobile platforms, field campaigns and ground based networks, provide the basis of knowledge on many temporal and spatial scales for understanding the changes occurring in Earth’s climate system. These observations also inform the development, calibration, and evaluation of numerical models of the physics, chemistry, and biology being used in analyzing the past changes in climate and for making future projections. As all observational data collected by support from Federal agencies are required to be made available free of charge with machine readable metadata, everyone can access these products for their personal analysis and research and …
