Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Exercise benefits the cardiovascular system, but strenuous exercise can cause cardiac damage and induce cytokine production, particularly that of interleukin-6 (IL-6). Hepcidin, which is primarily regulated by IL-6, increases after exercise. Hepcidin is a possible protective factor against the adverse effects of strenuous exercise such as oxidative stress. The aim of the study is to reveal that training increases hepcidin and attenuates increased levels of IL-6 in the hearts of exhaustively exercised rats by comparing the IL-6 and hepcidin mRNA expression levels in trained and untrained groups.Materials and methods: Thirty male Wistar albino rats were assigned to the following …

Universal And Stable Medical Image Generation For Tissue Segmentation (The Unistable Method), Ihab Elaff, Ali El-Kemany, Mohammed Kholif
Universal And Stable Medical Image Generation For Tissue Segmentation (The Unistable Method), Ihab Elaff, Ali El-Kemany, Mohammed Kholif
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Segmentation of medical images has been one of the most important research areas because of its impact in modeling and diagnosing the structure and the functions of various organs. The lack of unique solution for the segmentation problem of medical images is caused by the wide range of selections among different medical imaging modalities and clustering methods where each setting has its own estimates for solving this problem. The unistable method is a novel method that generates enhanced images with high contrast, which can reduce boundary overlap between different tissues. This is accomplished by fusion of different clustering maps, which …
Iris Nevus Diagnosis: Convolutional Neural Network And Deep Belief Network, Oyebade Oyedotun, Adnan Khashman
Iris Nevus Diagnosis: Convolutional Neural Network And Deep Belief Network, Oyebade Oyedotun, Adnan Khashman
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This work presents the diagnosis of iris nevus using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and deep belief network (DBN). Iris nevus is a pigmented growth (tumor) found in the front of the eye or around the pupil. It is seen that racial and environmental factors affect the iris color (e.g., blue, hazel, brown) of patients; hence, pigmented growths may be masked in the eye background or iris. In this work, some image processing techniques are applied to images to reinforce areas of interests in them, after which the considered classifiers are trained. We describe the automated diagnosis of iris nevus …

Assessing The Importance Of Features For Detection Of Hard Exudates In Retinal Images, Kemal Akyol, Baha Şen, Şafak Bayir, Hasan Basri̇ Çakmak
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Diabetes disrupts the operation of the eye and leads to vision loss, affecting particularly the nerve layer and capillary vessels in this layer by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.~Suddenly loss and blurred vision problems occur in the image, depending on the phase of the disease, called diabetic retinopathy. Hard exudates are one of the primary signs of diabetic retinopathy. Automatic recognition of hard exudates in retinal images can contribute to detection of the disease. We present an automatic screening system for the detection of hard exudates. This system consists of two main steps. Firstly, the features were …

Comparison Of Using The Genetic Algorithm And Cuckoo Search For Multicriteria Optimisation With Limitation, Ryszard Klempka, Boguslaw Filipowicz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The article presents an example of using two optimisation methods, a genetic algorithm and cuckoo search, to identify parameters of electric drive controllers using some quality criteria and by applying a limitation to the maximum values of signals in the controlled facility. The results for both optimisation methods are compared. The impact of the probability that the nest host discovers the laid eggs on the speed of finding the optimum solution is investigated.
Truncation Thresholds: A Pair Of Spike Detection Thresholds Computed Using Truncated Probability Distributions, Murat Okatan, Mehmet Kocatürk
Truncation Thresholds: A Pair Of Spike Detection Thresholds Computed Using Truncated Probability Distributions, Murat Okatan, Mehmet Kocatürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We describe a method for computing a pair of spike detection thresholds, called `truncation thresholds', using truncated probability distributions, for extracellular recordings. In existing methods the threshold is usually set to a multiple of an estimate of the standard deviation of the noise in the recording, with the multiplication factor being chosen between 3 and 5 according to the researcher's preferences. Our method has the following advantages over these methods. First, because the standard deviation is usually estimated from the entire recording, which includes the spikes, it increases with firing rate. By contrast, truncation thresholds decrease in absolute value with …
Early Detection Of Sudden Cardiac Death Using Poincaré Plots And Recurrence Plot-Based Features From Hrv Signals, Vahid Houshyarifar, Mehdi Chehel Amirani
Early Detection Of Sudden Cardiac Death Using Poincaré Plots And Recurrence Plot-Based Features From Hrv Signals, Vahid Houshyarifar, Mehdi Chehel Amirani
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper we present a method to predict sudden cardiac death (SCD) based on the heart rate variability (HRV) signal and recurrence plots and Poincaré plot-extracted features. This work is a challenge since it is aimed to devise a method to predict SCD 5 min before its onset. The method consists of four steps: preprocessing, feature extraction, feature reduction, and classification. In the first step, the QRS complexes are detected from the electrocardiogram signal and then the HRV signal is extracted. In the second step, the recurrence plot of the HRV signal and Poincaré plot-extracted features are obtained. Four …

Asymptotic Stability Of Solutions For A Certain Non-Autonomous Second-Order Stochastic Delay Differential Equation, Ahmed Mohamed Abou-El-Ela, Abdel-Rahiem Sadek, Ayman Mohammed Mahmoud, Eman Sayed Farghaly
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, sufficient criteria that guarantee the existence of stochastic asymptotic stability of the zero solution of the nonautonomous second-order stochastic delay differential equation \eqref{3e1} were established with the aid of a suitable Lyapunov functional. Two examples are given in the last section to illustrate our main result.
Dynamics Of A Predator-Prey System With A Mate-Finding Allee Effect On Prey, Ruiwen Wu, Xiuxaing Liu
Dynamics Of A Predator-Prey System With A Mate-Finding Allee Effect On Prey, Ruiwen Wu, Xiuxaing Liu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We consider a predator--prey system with nonmonotonic functional response and a hyperbolic type of mate-finding Allee effect on prey. A detailed mathematical analysis of the system, including the stability and a series of bifurcations (a saddle-node, a Hopf, and a Bogdanov--Takens bifurcation), has been given. The mathematical results show that the system is highly sensitive to the parameters and initial status. It exhibits a stable limit cycle, or different types of heteroclinic curves, or a homoclinic loop when parameters take suitable values.

Stability Of Nonmonotone Critical Traveling Waves Forspatially Discrete Reaction-Diffusion Equations With Time Delay, Ge Tian, Guobao Zhang, Zhao-Xing Yang
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper is concerned with the existence and stability of critical traveling waves (waves with minimal speed $c=c_*$) for a nonmonotone spatially discrete reaction-diffusion equation with time delay. We first show the existence of critical traveling waves by a limiting argument. Then, using the technical weighted energy method with some new variations, we prove that the critical traveling waves $\phi(x+c_{*}t)$ (monotone or nonmonotone) are time-asymptotically stable when the initial perturbations are small in a certain weighted Sobolev norm.
Stationary Distribution And Global Asymptotic Stability Of A Three-Species Stochastic Food-Chain System, Hong Qiu, Wenmin Deng
Stationary Distribution And Global Asymptotic Stability Of A Three-Species Stochastic Food-Chain System, Hong Qiu, Wenmin Deng
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper intends to study some dynamical properties of a stochasticthree-dimensional Lotka--Volterra system. Under some mild assumptions, we first introduce a simple method to show thatthe model has a global and positive solution almost surely. Secondly,we prove that this model has a stationary distribution. Then we study the global asymptoticstability of the positive solution. Finally, some numerical simulations are introduced toillustrate the theoretical results.
Quasi-Metric Trees And $Q$-Hyperconvex Hulls, Zechariah Mushaandja, Olivier Olela Otafudu
Quasi-Metric Trees And $Q$-Hyperconvex Hulls, Zechariah Mushaandja, Olivier Olela Otafudu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The investigation of metric trees began with J. Tits in 1977. Recently we studied a more general notion of quasi-metric tree. In the current article we prove, among other facts, that the $q$-hyperconvex hull of a $q$-hyperconvex $T_0$-quasi-metric tree is itself a $T_0$-quasi-metric tree. This is achieved without using the four-point property, a geometric concept used by Aksoy and Maurizi to show that every complete metric tree is hyperconvex.
Dirac Systems With Regular And Singular Transmission Effects, Eki̇n Uğurlu
Dirac Systems With Regular And Singular Transmission Effects, Eki̇n Uğurlu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we investigate the spectral properties of singular eigenparameter dependent dissipative problems in Weyl's limit-circle case with finite transmission conditions. In particular, these transmission conditions are assumed to be regular and singular. To analyze these problems we construct suitable Hilbert spaces with special inner products and linear operators associated with these problems. Using the equivalence of the Lax-Phillips scattering function and Sz-Nagy-Foiaş characteristic functions we prove that all root vectors of these dissipative operators are complete in Hilbert spaces.
Piecewise Asymptotically Almost Periodic Solution Of Neutral Volterra Integro-Differential Equations With Impulsive Effects, Zhinan Xia
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we investigate the existence and uniqueness ofa piecewise asymptotically almost periodic mild solution tononautonomous neutral Volterra integro-differential equations withimpulsive effects in Banach space. The working tools are based onthe Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem and semigroup theory. Inorder to illustrate our main results, we study the piecewiseasymptotically almost periodic solution of the impulsive partialdifferential equations with Dirichlet conditions.

On Generalized Kropina Change Of $M$Th Root Finsler Metrics With Special Curvature Properties, Bankteshwar Tiwari, Ghanashyam Kr. Prajapati
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In the present paper, we consider generalized Kropina change of $m$th root Finsler metrics and prove that every generalized Kropina change of $m$th root Finsler metrics with isotropic Berwald curvature, isotropic mean Berwald curvature, relatively isotropic Landsberg curvature, and relatively isotropic mean Landsberg curvature reduces to the Berwald metric, weakly Berwald metric, Landsberg metric, and weakly Landsberg metric, respectively. We also show that every generalized Kropina change of $m$th root Finsler metrics with almost vanishing $\textbf{H}$-curvature has vanishing $\textbf{H}$-curvature.
Exploiting Kernel-Based Feature Weighting And Instance Clustering To Transfer Knowledge Across Domains, Jafar Tahmoresnezhad, Sattar Hashemi
Exploiting Kernel-Based Feature Weighting And Instance Clustering To Transfer Knowledge Across Domains, Jafar Tahmoresnezhad, Sattar Hashemi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Learning invariant features across domains is of vital importance to unsupervised domain adaptation, where classifiers trained on the training examples (source domain) need to adapt to a different set of test examples (target domain) in which no labeled examples are available. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to find the invariant features in the original space and transfer the knowledge across domains. We extract invariant features of input data by a kernel-based feature weighting approach, which exploits distribution difference and instance clustering to find desired features. The proposed method is called the kernel-based feature weighting (KFW) approach and …
Probabilistic Data Fusion Model For Heart Beat Detection From Multimodal Physiological Data, Tehseen Zia, Zulqarnian Arif
Probabilistic Data Fusion Model For Heart Beat Detection From Multimodal Physiological Data, Tehseen Zia, Zulqarnian Arif
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Automatic detection of heart beats constitutes the basis for electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis and mainly relies on detecting QRS complexes. Detection is typically performed by analyzing the ECG signal. However, when signal quality is low, it often leads to the triggering of false alarms. A contemporary approach to reduce false alarm rate is to use multimodal data such as arterial blood pressure (ABP) or photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals. To leverage the correlated temporal nature of these signals, a probabilistic data fusion model for heart beat detection is proposed. A hidden Markov model is used to decode waveforms into segments. A Bayesian network …
A Hybrid Tracking System For Image-Guided Spine Surgery Using A Tracked Mobile C-Arm: A Phantom Study, Peyman Ghobadi Azbari, Alireza Ahmadian, Hooshang Saberi, Mohammadreza Ay, Mostafa Abdolghaffar, Keyvan Amini Khoiy
A Hybrid Tracking System For Image-Guided Spine Surgery Using A Tracked Mobile C-Arm: A Phantom Study, Peyman Ghobadi Azbari, Alireza Ahmadian, Hooshang Saberi, Mohammadreza Ay, Mostafa Abdolghaffar, Keyvan Amini Khoiy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In recent years, an increasing number of various surgeries are observed utilizing fluoroscopy. The radiation exposure received by patients and medical staff and the surgical guidance in multiple planes frequently necessitate the positioning of a mobile C-arm. Operative navigation enables a mobile C-arm to provide multiplanar surgical guidance and decreases the radiation dose to the patient and operating room personnel. In this study, we propose a video-based tracked mobile C-arm (referred to as a "tracked C-arm system") to position the system. This system defines a reference framework to maintain the video-optical tracker data and computed tomography (CT) or cone-beam CT …
Analysis Of Reconstruction Performance Of Magnetic Resonance Conductivity Tensor Imaging (Mrcti) Using Simulated Measurements, Evren Deği̇rmenci̇, Behçet Murat Eyüboğlu
Analysis Of Reconstruction Performance Of Magnetic Resonance Conductivity Tensor Imaging (Mrcti) Using Simulated Measurements, Evren Deği̇rmenci̇, Behçet Murat Eyüboğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Magnetic resonance conductivity tensor imaging (MRCTI) was proposed recently to produce electrical conductivity images of anisotropic tissues. Similar to magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT), MRCTI uses magnetic field and boundary potential measurements obtained utilizing magnetic resonance imaging techniques. MRCTI reconstructs tensor images of anisotropic conductivity whereas MREIT reconstructs isotropic conductivity images. In this study, spatial resolution and linearity of five recently proposed MRCTI algorithms are evaluated using simulated measurements gathered from three different computer models. The results show that all five algorithms have quite similar reconstruction performances. Since the AB$_{z}$S algorithm is easier to apply compared to the other …
A Data-Aware Cognitive Engine For Scheduling Data Intensive Applications In A Grid, Vijaya Nagarajan, Maluk Mohamed Mulk Abdul
A Data-Aware Cognitive Engine For Scheduling Data Intensive Applications In A Grid, Vijaya Nagarajan, Maluk Mohamed Mulk Abdul
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Data-intensive applications produce huge amounts of data that need to be stored, analyzed, and interpreted. A data grid serves as a cost-effective infrastructure for solving these data-intensive applications. Existing scheduling strategies are best suited for handling compute-intensive applications, although they lack in performance while handling data-intensive applications. In this work, a novel mechanism of incorporating cognitive science in a data grid is proposed for scheduling data-intensive workflows. A unique model is derived in which a cognitive engine (CE) is built into the middleware of the data grid. The intelligent agents present in the CE handle the request for data sets …

Breast Boundary Segmentation In Thermography Images Based On Random Walkers, Mehrdad Moghbel, Syamsiah Mashohor, Rozi Mahmud, M.Iqbal Bin Saripan, Suzana Abd Hamid, Suraini Mohamad Sani, Saiful Nizam
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Breast and areola boundary detection and segmentation present the biggest challenge in breast segmentation from thermography images, as breast boundaries, especially in the upper quadrants of the breast, are nonexistent. Many segmentation approaches have been proposed for breast segmentation, such as active contours and snakes, circular Hough transforms, and live wires, but these methods often fail to achieve satisfactory results. With recent advances in image processing techniques, new segmentation concepts are being developed, such as random walkers, which have received high interest from the medical imaging community. In this study, 91 images acquired utilizing a FLIR A320 thermal camera are …

Aqueous Paramagnetic Solutions For Mri Phantoms At 3 T:A Detailed Study On Relaxivities, Kalaivani Thangavel, Emi̇ne Ülkü Saritaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Phantoms with known T$_{1}$ and T$_{2}$ values that are prepared using solutions of easily accessible paramagnetic agents are commonly used in MRI imaging centers, especially with the goal of validating the accuracy of quantitative imaging protocols. The relaxivity parameters of several agents were comprehensively examined at lower B$_{0}$ field strengths, but studies at 3 T remain limited. The main goal of this study is to measure r$_{1}$ and r$_{2}$ relaxivities of three common paramagnetic agents (CuSO$_{4}$, MnCl$_{2}$, and NiCl$_{2})$ at room temperature at 3 T. Separate phantoms were prepared at various concentrations of 0.05-0.5 mM for MnCl$_{2}$ and 1-6 mM …

Edge Distance Graph Kernel And Its Application To Small Molecule Classification, Mehmet Tan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Graph classification is an important problem in graph mining with various applications in different fields. Kernel methods have been successfully applied to this problem, recently producing promising results. A graph kernel that mostly specifies classification performance has to be defined in order to apply kernel methods to a graph classification problem. Although there are various previously proposed graph kernels, the problem is still worth investigating, as the available kernels are far from perfect. In this paper, we propose a new graph kernel based on a recently proposed concept called edge distance-k graphs. These new graphs are derived from the original …
