Synthesis Of Magnetic Carbon Nanoparticles Using Pyrolysis Of Glycerol And Ferrocene For Antibiotic Removal, Konrat Kerdnawee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Synthesis of magnetic carbon nanoparticles (M-CNPs) via nebulizing co-pyrolysis of glycerol and ferrocene with magnetic induction was successfully conducted. Experimental investigation on influence of synthesizing temperature and ratio of glycerol to ferrocene suggested that at 800 °C of synthesizing temperature with an initial weight ratio of glycerol to ferrocene of 3:1, the highest M-CNP synthesizing yield of 15.9 % was achieved. With the presence of magnetic induction, controlled synthesis of M-CNPs could be anticipated as a promising method for producing M-CNPs with high quality and high yield. Oxy-tetracycline (OTC) has been recognized as environmental contamination due to its over-dosage and …

Development Of Microfluidic Analytical Device For Detection Of Sulfur-Containing Compounds Using Raman Spectroscopy, Duangtip Lawanstiend

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this work, microfluidic systems coupled with Raman detection for analytical applications were developed using both off-chip and on-chip synthesized nanoporous Ag microstructures (np-AgMSs) as SERS substrates. Off-chip synthesized np-AgMSs were used as on-chip SERS substrates for determination of glutathione (GSH) using a reversed reporting technique. The np-AgMSs were drop casted onto the cross channel of a microfluidic device. R6G (a Raman reporter) interacted with the embedded np-AgMSs in the microchannel to form R6G-np-AgMSs which provided high SERS signal. Then, R6G in the R6G-np-AgMSs complex was replaced by GSH, causing the decrease in SERS signal which was related to the …

Cumulative Herbivory Outpaces Compensation For Early Floral Damage On A Monocarpic Perennial Thistle, Natalie M. West, Svata M. Louda Jan 2017

Cumulative Herbivory Outpaces Compensation For Early Floral Damage On A Monocarpic Perennial Thistle, Natalie M. West, Svata M. Louda

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Floral herbivory represents a major threat to plant reproductive success, driving the importance of plant tolerance mechanisms that minimize fitness costs. However, the cumulative insect herbivory plants experience under natural conditions complicates predictions about tolerance contributions to net fitness. Apical damage can lead to compensatory seed production from late season flowering that ameliorates early season fitness losses. Yet, the compensation realized depends on successful development and herbivore escape by later season flowers. Using monocarpic perennial Cirsium canescens, we quantified seed-reproductive fitness of plants with vs. without experimental damage to the early-developing large apical flower head, with and without a …

Estrogen Receptor Levels Higher In “Bad” Maternal Rats Than In “Good” Maternal Rats, Keaton A. Unroe Jan 2017

Estrogen Receptor Levels Higher In “Bad” Maternal Rats Than In “Good” Maternal Rats, Keaton A. Unroe

Longwood Senior Theses

In mammalian species, parental care is critical for the survival as well as the mental and physical well-being of offspring (Dulac, 2014). This is particularly true in humans; researchers have long been interested in what the effects are of differences in parental upbringing, including the absence of parents (e.g., Cabrera et al., 2000) and differences in disciplinary parenting styles (e.g., Baumrind, 1967). Though tempting to think of all parents as “good” parents in both the human and animal worlds, that clearly is not the case; sadly, there are “bad” parents as well. For instance, cross-sectional studies in humans on parent-child …

A Life Cycle Approach To The Development And Validation Of An Ontology Of The U.S. Common Rule (45 C.F.R. § 46), Francis Manion

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Requirements for the protection of human research subjects stem from directly from federal regulation by the Department of Health and Human Services in Title 45 of the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) part 46. 15 other federal agencies include subpart A of part 46 verbatim in their own body of regulation. Hence 45 C.F.R. part 46 subpart A has come to be called colloquially the ‘Common Rule.’

Overall motivation for this study began as a desire to facilitate the ethical sharing of biospecimen samples from large biospecimen collections by using ontologies. Previous work demonstrated that in general the informed consent …

The Influence Of Exogenously Applied “Anti-Stress” Agents In The Upregulation Of The Drought Response In Iraqi Wheat Varieties, Fakhriya Mohammed Kareem

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important cereal crops grown in the world. It has great importance because it constitutes a major source of carbohydrate for more than one third of the world’s population (Budak et al., 2013). In the last three decades, drought conditions are becoming more widespread in wheat production areas including Europe, Australia and Asia, and it is considered a major cause of reduced wheat growth and productivity in most developing countries with semi-arid climates. Drought constitutes the most important threat for wheat production in Iraq and especially for the Kurdistan Regional Governate …

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Sandy Beach Sediment Grain Size And Sorting, Sam Prodger Jan 2017

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Sandy Beach Sediment Grain Size And Sorting, Sam Prodger

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Beach grain size plays a major role in controlling beach slope and sediment transport rates and is a crucial criterion in selecting the appropriate fill material for beach nourishment. Yet, little is known about how and why beach grain size (and sorting) varies both spatially and temporally on high-energy sandy beaches. Therefore, in this PhD research project, the presence, magnitude and predictability of any spatio-temporal sediment variability was investigated on a number of contrasting high-energy (average significant wave height = 0.8 to 3.5 m), predominantly macrotidal (MSR = 3.1 – 6.2 m), sandy (0.26 – 0.64 mm) beach sites around …

Intelligent Profiling Of Blood Donors In Ireland, Joanna Kossakowska Jan 2017

Intelligent Profiling Of Blood Donors In Ireland, Joanna Kossakowska

Theses

The demand for blood products in Ireland is constantly rising due to population growth and population ageing. It is believed that within the next decade these two factors will present challenges to blood donor recruitment and the availability of blood supplies. Improving the retention of blood donors will have a positive impact on the availability of blood products. Identification of suitable donors with the potential for long-term donating can potentially enhance the predictability of blood supply levels.

This research proposes that the patterns of blood donation behaviours of donors can be isolated from blood donor databases held by blood collecting …

Eating Attitudes And Perception Of Peer Social Media, Sharon Smith Jan 2017

Eating Attitudes And Perception Of Peer Social Media, Sharon Smith

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

There is evidence that social factors influence eating-disordered behaviors through social modeling and social comparison. One way that researchers examine social comparison and perceptions of individuals with disordered eating behaviors is through vignette studies, but these studies may lack the nuance of how these behaviors are displayed outside of the lab, and therefore lack external validity. The current study examined how individuals who score high and low on the EAT-26 (a measure of eating behavior) perceive the eating behaviors of a fictional peer and possible social comparison target, presented in the form of a social media profile. Participants with higher …

Too Tired To Care: Religious Orientations’ Relationship With Ego-Depleted Empathy, Mark Handley Jan 2017

Too Tired To Care: Religious Orientations’ Relationship With Ego-Depleted Empathy, Mark Handley

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Psychological research into various aspects of religiosity, empathy, and self-regulation has grown throughout the years. Using Wulff’s (1997) literal verses symbolic bipolar dimension of religiosity, Duriez (2004) found that participants who identified as tending to possess symbolic beliefs regarding religious symbols reported the ability to emphasize with others more than those adhering to increasingly literal interpretations of religious themes. Watterson and Giesler (2012) found that individuals who tended to have higher levels of religiosity appeared to engage longer in a self-regulatory task than those who showed lower levels of religiosity. Researchers interested in self-regulation have found individuals who had undergone …

A Presence-Only Species Distribution Model Comparison Predicting The Distribution Of The Amphibian Chytrid Fungus (Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis), Melanie L. Torres Jan 2017

A Presence-Only Species Distribution Model Comparison Predicting The Distribution Of The Amphibian Chytrid Fungus (Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis), Melanie L. Torres

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Global anthropogenic impacts have incited devastating effects on both human and wildlife populations. Emerging infectious diseases (EID) are one consequence of these impacts. One particular EID, chytridiomycosis, is a threat to global amphibian populations, causing massive die-offs and several species extinctions. While predictive modeling has helped the general understanding of where the aquatic pathogen causing chytridiomycosis, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), could spread to, most models are on continental or countrywide scales. This coarse-scale modeling makes local management and conservation planning for imperiled amphibians difficult. In addition, modeling efforts can vary depending on location and species, making it necessary to test the …

Effects Of Posttranslational Modification Of Transcription Factor Gli-Similar 3 By Sumoylation On Insulin Transcription In Pancreatic Β Cells, Tyler M. Hoard Jan 2017

Effects Of Posttranslational Modification Of Transcription Factor Gli-Similar 3 By Sumoylation On Insulin Transcription In Pancreatic Β Cells, Tyler M. Hoard

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The ability to control blood glucose levels is a fundamental component of vertebrates. In these organisms, blood glucose homeostasis is achieved through a fine-tuned mechanism that largely involves the secretion of hormones from the endocrine pancreas into the bloodstream. These hormones include glucagon, which is secreted by the α cells of the pancreas and initiates the release of glucose into the bloodstream through gluconeogenesis in the liver, and insulin, which is secreted from the β cells and signals the uptake of excess blood glucose by the peripheral tissue. Gli-similar 3 (Glis3) is a transcription factor that has previously been shown …

Does Being Kind To Oneself Help Fight Against Depression? The Potential Moderating Role Of Self-Compassion In The Relationship Between Romantic Rejection And Depression, Imfong Chan Jan 2017

Does Being Kind To Oneself Help Fight Against Depression? The Potential Moderating Role Of Self-Compassion In The Relationship Between Romantic Rejection And Depression, Imfong Chan

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

A large body of research has shown that romantic rejection is significantly related to the presence of clinical depression. Growing evidence suggests that self-compassion is significantly negatively associated with depression and other psychopathologies. However, no research has explored the interactive role that self-compassion plays in the relationship between romantic rejection and depression. The present study is the first of the literature to investigate the interaction of self-compassion and romantic rejection on depression. Consistent with the previous studies, romantic rejection was significantly associated with depression. However, a moderation analysis indicated that self-compassion did not moderate the relationship between romantic rejection and …

Serum Cortisol Concentrations And Behavior Assessment As Tools For Evaluating Stress In Horses Used In Therapeutic Or University Riding Programs, Shikun Chen

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Stress is known to have a negative impact on the health and well-being of animals. Physiological and behavioral changes offer objective and easy to use methods of evaluating stress in horses. However, there are limited studies showing a relationship between changes in stress-related behavior and stress-related serum cortisol concentrations in horses. This study evaluated the relationship between stress-related behavior and cortisol concentration changes in horses used in a university equine program and a therapeutic riding program. Behavior was evaluated by two trained observers during multiple riding sessions. Audio recordings were made during direct observation, and video recordings were used to …

Potential For Asymmetric Competition Among Co-Inhabiting Invasive Silver Carp And Native Shad Species In The Lower Midwest, Dalton D. Lebeda Jan 2017

Potential For Asymmetric Competition Among Co-Inhabiting Invasive Silver Carp And Native Shad Species In The Lower Midwest, Dalton D. Lebeda

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, Silver Carp are an invasive voracious planktivorous fish that are capable of competing with many native fish species. Until the last decade, very little was known about how Silver Carp would interact with native fish species or how quickly their populations would expand. In the early 2000’s, established Silver Carp populations were reported in Kentucky Lake although they were reported in the Tennessee River much earlier (1987). Kentucky Lake is the first large flood storage reservoir that has been invaded by a reproducing population of Silver Carp in the United States. To date, control measures for …

Microfluidic Enhanced Fabry-Perot Etalon Based Optical Biosensor For The Detection Of Biological Substances In Liquid With Refractive Index Measurement, Nezam Uddin Jan 2017

Microfluidic Enhanced Fabry-Perot Etalon Based Optical Biosensor For The Detection Of Biological Substances In Liquid With Refractive Index Measurement, Nezam Uddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new microfluidic optical biosensor was demonstrated for refractive index measurements with high sensitivity and accuracy in the range of few micrometers liquid channels utilizing a Fabry-Perot cavity formed between two reflective semitransparent surfaces. The transmitted light through the cavity forms interference peaks in the transmission spectrum which is dependent upon the refractive index of the fluid in the microfluidic channel. We demonstrate the biosensor using Fabry-Perot to provide high accuracy and sensitivity with real-time measurement. The sensor can resolve refractive index changes with the shift of peak wavelength of transmitted spectrum. In our Fabry- Perot etalon based biosensor, two …

The Effect Of Sport Participation On Bone, Maggie M. Minett Jan 2017

The Effect Of Sport Participation On Bone, Maggie M. Minett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical loading – or physical activity – is essential in the bone remodeling process as well as optimizing the densitometric and geometric properties of bone throughout the lifespan. Participation in sports is a common mode of physical activity that can enhance bone mass accrual at younger ages and facilitate bone mass maintenance at older ages. Research suggests that sport participation continued from adolescence into high school and college provides added benefits on aBMD and cortical bone measures and these benefits remain 10-15 years after retirement from sport. However, in most studies, the higher rates of bone loss after sport cessation …

Investigating The Atmospheric Production Of Perchlorate: Inference From Polar Ice Cores, Thomas S. Cox Jan 2017

Investigating The Atmospheric Production Of Perchlorate: Inference From Polar Ice Cores, Thomas S. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate (ClO4) in the environment is of concern, because of potential health risks to humans, among other reasons. Evidence suggests that the majority of environmental perchlorate is formed in the atmosphere (likely in the stratosphere), in chemical processes involving ozone and stratospheric chlorine. A lack of knowledge in regards to the processes has resulted in a limited understanding of the environmental conditions and variables that influence perchlorate production and consequently perchlorate prevalence and variability in the environment. In this study, perchlorate was measured, using an established ion chromatography-‐electrospray ionization-‐tandem mass spectrometry (IC-‐ESI-‐ MS/MS) technique, in over 1,600 snowpit …

Improving Survey Methodology To Monitor Rare Grassland Birds In South Dakota, Kassondra Hendricks Jan 2017

Improving Survey Methodology To Monitor Rare Grassland Birds In South Dakota, Kassondra Hendricks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data for grassland bird species has shown the most rapid population decline of any other bird group. Current roadside survey techniques, however, may fall short of providing accurate numbers of rare grassland bird species such as chestnut-collared longspur (Calcarius ornatus), lark bunting (Calamospiza melanocorys), Sprague’s pipit (Anthus spragueii), and Baird’s sparrow (Ammodramus bairdii). Trends resulting from roadside data for grassland birds are oftentimes determined to be statistically insignificant because many grassland bird species occur on too few routes, occur in low numbers per route, and show high annual fluctuations in number. It is possible roadside surveys …

Identification Of Candidate Cellulose Utilizing Bacteria From The Rumen Of Beef Cattle, Using Bacterial Community Profiling And Metagenomics, Lee Opdahl Jan 2017

Identification Of Candidate Cellulose Utilizing Bacteria From The Rumen Of Beef Cattle, Using Bacterial Community Profiling And Metagenomics, Lee Opdahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ruminal microbiome allows ruminant animals to convert cellulosic biomass into food products. A majority of ruminal microorganisms remain uncharacterized due, in part, to the complexity of ruminal microbial communities. In order to gain further insight, selection-based batch culturing from bovine rumen fluid, in combination with metagenomics, was used to identify and characterize previously uncharacterized rumen bacteria capable of metabolizing cellulose, which was supplemented as a purified substrate. 16S rRNA-based population analysis was used to identify rumen bacteria enriched within 14 days of culturing. As a result of 4 independent experiments, seven different candidate cellulose-utilizing species-level operational taxonomic units (OTUs) …
