Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs Oct 2025

Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This preliminary report explores insights about mechanisms of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) gained from a mathematical model of interconnected clusters of excitatory neurons. This local, integrate-and-fire, spiking neural network is subjected to random noise from other populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons outside the network. Its emergent behavior in response to different ratios of inhibitory to excitatory noise mimics several aspects of ASDs. The spiking neural network functions according to rules of classical neurophysiology, involving resting membrane potential, threshold potential, excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials, action potential, and refractory period. Key parameters include the incremental change in membrane potential, p …

Cell heterogeneity plays an important role in patient responses to drug treatments. In many cancers, it is associated with poor treatment outcomes. Many modern drug combination therapies aim to exploit cell heterogeneity, but determining how to optimise responses from heterogeneous cell populations while accounting for multi-drug synergies remains a challenge. In this work, we introduce and analyse a general optimal control framework that can be used to model the treatment response of multiple cell populations that are treated with multiple drugs that mutually interact. In this framework, we model the effect of multiple drugs on the cell populations using a …

Background: Genetic ancestry is an important factor to account for in DNA methylation studies because genetic variation influences DNA methylation patterns. One approach uses principal components (PCs) calculated from CpG sites that overlap with common SNPs to adjust for ancestry when genotyping data is not available. However, this method does not remove technical and biological variations, such as sex and age, prior to calculating the PCs. The first PC is therefore often associated with factors other than ancestry.

Methods: We developed and adapted the adapted EpiAnceR+ approach, which includes (1) residualizing the CpG data overlapping with common SNPs for control …

Impact Of Systemic Statins On Periodontal Health: A Retrospective Study In A Lebanese Population, Elsa Boustany, Georgio Saad, Wassim Al Manhal

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Introduction: Statins, primarily used for cholesterol management, have shown potential in improving periodontal health due to their anti-inflammatory and bone-regenerative properties.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 30 patients under statin medication. A control group of 30 non-statin users was selected using propensity score matching (PSM) to minimize bias. Data on pocket depth, attachment loss, and radiographic bone loss were collected at two time points: T0 and T1. Statistical analysis was performed using RStudio, with a significance threshold set at p < 0.05.

Results: The study revealed significant decrease in pocket depth (p = 0.0027), attachment loss (p …

Assessment Of External Root Resorption During The First Stage Of The Orthodontic Treatment: A Prospective Cone-Beam Tomography Study, Eliana Pineda Vélez Oct 2025

Assessment Of External Root Resorption During The First Stage Of The Orthodontic Treatment: A Prospective Cone-Beam Tomography Study, Eliana Pineda Vélez

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Introduction: predisposition to root resorption as a result of a dental movement may be a consequence of clinical, biological, and biomechanical factors that should lead the clinician to objectively assess each patient to reduce associated risk factors.

Objectives: to establish an association between clinical and tomographic findings related to external root resorption (ERR) using cone beam tomography (CBCT) on maxillary incisors during the first stage of the orthodontic treatment. Methods: an observational, follow-up, cohort study that analyzed the association between clinical and radiographic variables on maxillary incisors using CBCT before placing fixed orthodontic appliances and finishing the first …
