Toward An Improved Conceptual Understanding Of North American Tree Species Distributions, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry Jan 2017

Toward An Improved Conceptual Understanding Of North American Tree Species Distributions, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Species distributions have often been assumed to represent climatic limitations, yet recent evidence has challenged these assumptions and emphasized the potential importance of biotic interactions, dispersal limitation, and disturbance. Despite significant investigation into these factors, an integrated understanding of where and when they may be important is lacking. Here, we review evidence for the factors underlying the historical and contemporary distributions of North American tree species and argue that a cohesive conceptual framework must be informed by an understanding of species ecological and evolutionary history. We further demonstrate that available evidence offers little indication of a significant, independent influence of …

Using Whole-Group Metabolic Rate And Behaviour To Assess The Energetics Of Courtship In Red-Sided Garter Snakes, Christopher R. Friesen, Don Powers, Robert T. Mason Jan 2017

Using Whole-Group Metabolic Rate And Behaviour To Assess The Energetics Of Courtship In Red-Sided Garter Snakes, Christopher R. Friesen, Don Powers, Robert T. Mason

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Reproductive effort is an important aspect of life history as reproductive success is arguably the most important component of fitness. Males tend to compete for access to females and, in the process, expend their energetic capital on mate searching, maleemale competition and courtship rather than directly on offspring. Red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, are an exceptional model for studying energetic costs of courtship and mating as they fast during the spring mating season, which segregates the cost of energy acquisition from the cost of courtship and mating. However, measuring an individual male's metabolic rate during courtship is complicated by …

Fluorescence Induction Of Photosynthetic Bacteria, G. Spika, M. Kis, James L. Smart, P. Maroti Jan 2017

Fluorescence Induction Of Photosynthetic Bacteria, G. Spika, M. Kis, James L. Smart, P. Maroti

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

The kinetics of bacteriochlorophyll fluorescence in intact cells of the purple nonsulfur bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides were measured under continuous and pulsed actinic laser diode (808 nm wavelength and maximum 2 W light power) illumination on the micro- and millisecond timescale. The fluorescence induction curve was interpreted in terms of a combination of photochemical and triplet fluorescence quenchers and was demonstrated to be a reflection of redox changes and electron carrier dynamics. By adjustment of the conditions of single and multiple turnovers of the reaction center, we obtained 11 ms–1 and 120 μs–1 for the rate constants of cytochrome c2 3+ …

Species Interactions Weakly Modify Climate-Induced Tree Co-Occurrence Patterns, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry Jan 2017

Species Interactions Weakly Modify Climate-Induced Tree Co-Occurrence Patterns, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Aims: Species distributions are hypothesized to be underlain by a complex association of processes that span multiple spatial scales including biotic interactions, dispersal limitation, fine-scale resource gradients and climate. Species disequilibrium with climate may reflect the effects of non-climatic processes on species distributions, yet distribution models have rarely directly considered non-climatic processes. Here, we use a Joint Species Distribution Model (JSDM) to investigate the influence of non-climatic factors on species co-occurrence patterns and to directly quantify the relative influences of climate and alternative processes that may generate correlated responses in species distributions, such as species interactions, on tree co-occurrence patterns. …

Restoration Of Motor Defects Caused By Loss Of Drosophila Tdp-43 By Expression Of The Voltage-Gated Calcium Channel, Cacophony, In Central Neurons, Kayly M. Lembke, David B. Norton, Charles Scudder Jan 2017

Restoration Of Motor Defects Caused By Loss Of Drosophila Tdp-43 By Expression Of The Voltage-Gated Calcium Channel, Cacophony, In Central Neurons, Kayly M. Lembke, David B. Norton, Charles Scudder

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Defects in the RNA-binding protein, TDP-43, are known to cause a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar dementia. A variety of experimental systems have shown that neurons are sensitive to TDP-43 expression levels, yet the specific functional defects resulting from TDP-43 dysregulation have not been well described. Using the Drosophila TDP-43 ortholog TBPH, we previously showed that TBPH-null animals display locomotion defects as third instar larvae. Furthermore, loss of TBPH caused a reduction in cacophony, a Type II voltage-gated calcium channel, expression and that genetically restoring cacophony in motor neurons in TBPH mutant animals was …

Effects Of Size, Caudal Autotomy, And Predator Kairomones On The Foraging Behavior Of Alleghany Mountain Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus Ochrophaeus), Emilia A.R. Gildemeister, Wesley I. Payette, Aaron M. Sullivan Jan 2017

Sullivan

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Prey must balance the conflicting demands of foraging and defensive behavior. Foraging under the threat of predation may be further complicated among species that engage in caudal autotomy, the loss of a portion of the tail at preformed breakage planes, because the tail may serve as an important energy storage organ and contribute to motility, culminating in a trade-off between foraging and predator avoidance. As a result of the advantages conferred by the presence of a tail, individuals that have recently undergone autotomy may be more motivated to forage despite elevated levels of threat indicated by predator kairomones. We used …

Extended Protein Ions Are Formed By The Chain Ejection Model In Chemical Supercharging Electrospray Ionization, Micah T. Donor, Simon A. Ewing, Muhammad A. Zenaidee, William A. Donald, James S. Prell

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Supercharging electrospray ionization can be a powerful tool for increasing charge states in mass spectra and generating unfolded ion structures, yet key details of its mechanism remain unclear. The structures of highly extended protein ions and the mechanism of supercharging were investigated using ion mobility-mass spectrometry. Head-to-tail-linked polyubiquitins (Ubq1−11) were used to determine size and charge state scaling laws for unfolded protein ions formed by supercharging while eliminating amino acid composition as a potential confounding factor. Collisional cross section was found to scale linearly with mass for these ions and several other monomeric proteins, and the maximum observed charge state …

Collidoscope: An Improved Tool For Computing Collisional Cross Sections With The Trajectory Method, Simon A. Ewing, Micah T. Donor, Jesse W. Wilson, James S. Prell

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry (IM-MS) can be a powerful tool for determining structural information about ions in the gas phase, from small covalent analytes to large, unfolded, and/or denatured proteins and complexes. For large biomolecular ions, which may have a wide variety of possible gas-phase conformations and multiple charge sites, quantitative, physically explicit modeling of collisional cross sections (CCSs) for comparison to IMS data can be challenging and time-consuming. We present a “trajectory method” (TM) based CCS calculator, named “Collidoscope”, which utilizes parallel processing and optimized trajectory sampling, and implements both He and N2 as collision gas options. Also included is …

On-Line Adaptive Dynamic Programming For Feedback Control, Xiangnan Zhong Jan 2017

On-Line Adaptive Dynamic Programming For Feedback Control, Xiangnan Zhong

Open Access Dissertations

Stability analysis and controller design are among the most important issues in feedback control problems. Usually, controller design for linear system can be obtained by solving the Riccati equation. However, when comes to the nonlinear control problem, Riccati equation becomes the well-known Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation which is difficult to tackle directly. Fortunately, adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) has been widely recognized as one of the “core methodologies” to achieve optimal control in stochastic process in a general case to achieve brain-like intelligent control. Extensive efforts and promising results have been achieved over the past decades. The achievements cover a large variety …

Assessing Hand Hygiene Compliance In Healthcare Workers To Reduce Infectious Disease, Ahmed Salem Alhasani Jan 2017

Assessing Hand Hygiene Compliance In Healthcare Workers To Reduce Infectious Disease, Ahmed Salem Alhasani

Open Access Dissertations

Hand hygiene is the first line of defense against the prevalence of infectious diseases in healthcare settings. Therefore, healthcare costs can be reduced. However, having rare incidents of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) does not always mean that hand hygiene compliance is high and at its desired level. This research study aims to develop multi-statistical measurements to assess hand hygiene compliance of the medical and nursing groups at the inpatient wards, 5B, 6B and ICU at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center (PVAMC). The PVAMC was trying to identify whether the few cases or rare incidents of HAI that have been reported …

Direct Substrate Recognition By The Atp-Dependent Chaperone Protease Clpxp And Roles In Proteostasis, Marissa Grace Viola Jan 2017

Direct Substrate Recognition By The Atp-Dependent Chaperone Protease Clpxp And Roles In Proteostasis, Marissa Grace Viola

Open Access Dissertations

The AAA+ (ATPases associated with a variety of cellular activities) protein superfamily includes approximately 30,000 molecular machines powered by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) binding and hydrolysis events, which are important for many cellular processes, including cell division, DNA replication, intracellular transport, and protein quality control. The bacterial AAA+ protein ClpXP is a two component ATP-dependent chaperone-protease that recognizes protein substrates bearing specific recognition signals, subsequently unfolding and degrading them to eliminate unnecessary or misfolded proteins. Since degradation is irreversible, highly specific recognition motifs are needed to ensure intentional engagement. A common strategy to facilitate recognition of substrates by AAA+ ATPases is …

Tanzania is among the countries with high prevalence of HIV prevalence in the World. Despite the fact that the epidemic has been, and still is a threat to persons of all ages, recent studies have suggested that most new infections occur among couples in stable relationships. Infected couples are categorised into two: the positive concordant, where both the partners are HIV positive; and sero-discordant couples, where one partner is HIV positive while the other is negative. Recently, researchers and many other stake-holders working on the HIV/AIDS epidemic have given a remarkable attention to this astonishing reality. For instance one study …

The Effects Of Hurricane And Tornado Disasters On Pregnancy Outcomes, Kenneth E. Christopher Jan 2017

The Effects Of Hurricane And Tornado Disasters On Pregnancy Outcomes, Kenneth E. Christopher

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Maternal prenatal exposure to hurricanes and tornadoes could contribute to an increased risk for adverse birth outcomes. Little is known about the effects of Hurricane Katrina of August 2005, on pregnancy outcomes in Mississippi. Additionally, little is known about the influence of the April 2011 Alabama tornado disaster on births in that state. The purpose of this study was to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the relationship between maternal prenatal exposure to these storms and adverse infant health outcomes. The theoretical framework guiding this retrospective, cross-sectional study was the life course approach. Data for this investigation included 2,000 records …

A Minority Perspective On The Public Health Response To The Obesity Epidemic, Rickey L. Ford Jan 2017

A Minority Perspective On The Public Health Response To The Obesity Epidemic, Rickey L. Ford

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Obesity is currently viewed as one of the most important health concerns in the United States. Researchers have minimally investigated perspectives surrounding obesity within the African-American female population. This lack of research presented a gap in knowledge concerning the perceived social, environmental, and cultural influences of obesity within this population. The research questions asked African-American females about their views toward these influences. This research was guided by tenets of the social cognitive theory and the transtheoretical model for behavioral change. Thirteen African-American females participated in the interviews. The data collected were reviewed and coded using word frequencies and themes. Findings …

Online Facilitation Of Early Childhood Education Preservice Teacher Field Experiences, Catherine Meier Meier

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Researchers have determined that field experience is crucial in education preparation programs, yet little information is available about field experience within online early childhood education (ECE) programs. Educators who work in online ECE programs need to understand how to facilitate field experience effectively. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to understand the processes, procedures, and experiences of instructors who facilitate preservice teachers' field experience in online ECE programs. A constructivist framework was used to examine facilitation practices. Nine instructors from online ECE programs in the United States participated in 2 semistructured interviews that lasted approximately 1 hour each. …

Association Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration And Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Jeffrey A. Nau Jan 2017

Association Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration And Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Jeffrey A. Nau

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, irreversible disease that robs individuals of vision, quality of life, and independence. It is the leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a condition characterized by repeated episodes of apnea and/or hypopnea, insomnia, short sleep duration, and/or sleep disturbances (snoring, gasping, etc.). Because SDB has been shown to cause chronic hypoxia resulting in oxidative stress on the retina, it has been proposed that SDB may be associated with AMD. Based on the life course theory of chronic disease, this quantitative, cross-sectional study used data from the 2005-2008 National Health …

Trust Me, I'M A Pragmatist: A Partially Pragmatic Critique Of Pragmatic Activism, Joshua Ulan Galperin Jan 2017

Trust Me, I'M A Pragmatist: A Partially Pragmatic Critique Of Pragmatic Activism, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Pragmatism is a robust philosophy, vernacular hand waiving, a method of judicial and administrative decisionmaking, and, more recently, justification for a certain type of political activism. While philosophical, judicial, and administrative pragmatism have garnered substantial attention and analysis from scholars, we have been much stingier with pragmatic activism — that which, in the spirit of the 21st Century’s 140-character limit, I will call “pragtivism.” This Article is intended as an introduction to pragtivism, a critique of the practice, and a constructive framework for addressing some of my critiques.

To highlight the contours of pragtivism, this Article tells the story of …

Defining And Closing The Hydraulic Fracturing Governance Gap, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Grace Heusner, Allison Sloto Jan 2017

Defining And Closing The Hydraulic Fracturing Governance Gap, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Grace Heusner, Allison Sloto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

As recent examples in Texas and Colorado have shown, if local governments ban fracking, they risk pushback from state governments. This pushback, in turn, can result in preemption making an outright local ban on fracking self-defeating because it could ultimately result in less local control over the impacts of hydraulic fracturing. Given this potentially self-defeating nature of local fracking bans, local governments should address the impacts of fracking through more traditional local governance mechanisms that do not pose as great a risk to local authority.

On this premise, this Article seeks to make the case for the importance of, and …

Zoning’S Centennial: A Complete Account Of The Evolution Of Zoning Into A Robust System Of Land Use Law—1916-2016 (Part Iv), John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Fracking is happening and local governments are subjected to many of its associated risks. They either need to act, or know—clearly and convincingly—why they should not. The federal government has stopped far short of comprehensive regulation of fracking; the states’ regulations range from fair to poor, sometimes preempting local regulation but most often sharing regulatory authority over land use impacts.

When Does Sex Diversity On Boards Benefit Firms?, Darren Rosenblum Jan 2017

When Does Sex Diversity On Boards Benefit Firms?, Darren Rosenblum

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Firms embrace diversity, especially with regard to sex. Overtly optimistic predictions of a diversity dividend, some built on sex stereotypes, lead these firms to count on profits that may never materialize. This Article attempts to reset the agenda on how to study corporate board diversity. We can only assess if and how sex diversity yields benefits by understanding the who, what, and where of diversity. Whether sex diversity produces a "diversity dividend" depends on three key factors: ( 1) the nature of the benefit of including women (whether for their experience or other qualities); (2) the kind of firm and …

Detection Of Inorganic Phosphate In Environmental Water Samples Using A Terbium And Gold Nanoparticle-Based Fret Chemosensor, Madeleine Johnson Jan 2017

Detection Of Inorganic Phosphate In Environmental Water Samples Using A Terbium And Gold Nanoparticle-Based Fret Chemosensor, Madeleine Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel chemosensor for the detection of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in environmental water samples is outlined. The sensing solution is comprised of a luminescent lanthanide, terbium (Tb3+), chelated to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) acid in solution with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)- capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The Tb-EDTA and AuNPs undergo a Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism in which the Tb3+ luminescence is quenched. Upon the addition of inorganic phosphate (Pi), the AuNPs begin to aggregate and precipitate out of solution. The aggregation of AuNPs results in the restoration of the Tb-EDTA signal which can then be correlated to Pi concentration in …
