The Effects Of Virtual Versus Physical Lab Manipulatives On Inquiry Skill Acquisition And Conceptual Understanding Of Density, James R. Brinson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study compared the effects of virtual versus physical laboratory manipulatives on 84 undergraduate non-science majors (a) conceptual understanding of density and (b) density-related inquiry skill acquisition. A pre-post comparison study design was used, which incorporated all components of an inquiry-guided classroom, except experimental mode, and which controlled for curriculum, instructor, instructional method, time spent on task, and availability of reference resources. Participants were randomly assigned to either a physical or virtual lab group. Pre- and post-assessments of conceptual understanding and inquiry skills were administered to both groups. Paired-samples t tests revealed a significant mean percent correct score increase …

Microbial Ecology Of Fresh Vegetables, J. Zheng, A. De Jesus, S. Sahu, A. E. Hayford, Y. Luo, A. R. Datta, E. W. Brown, R. Bell

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

The total consumption of fresh and processed vegetables has exceeded 123 kg per capita in the United States and 118 kg per capita in the European Union (http://www.helgilibrary.com/ indicators/index/vegetable‐consumption‐percapita) in 2009. Changes in lifestyles and consumption trends have prompted the sustained growth of fresh‐cut or minimally processed vegetables that are fresh and ready‐to‐eat (RTE). In 2011, for example, total US fresh‐cut produce sales through both food service and retail channels were estimated to surpass $27 billion (Cook et al., 2012).

Mother-Child Interactions And Externalizing Behavior Problems In Preschoolers Over Time: Inhibitory Control As A Mediator, Rianne Van Dijk, Maja Deković, Tessa L. Bunte, Kim Schoemaker, Mariëlle Zondervan-Zwijnenburg, Kimberly A. Espy, Walter Matthys

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown links between parenting and externalizing behavior problems in young children over time. Associations between inhibitory control, one of the executive functions, and externalizing behavior problems are widely established as well. Yet, the role of inhibitory control in the maintenance and change of externalizing behavior problems over time remains unclear. We examined whether inhibitory control could explain the link between mother-child interactions measured on a moment-to-moment timescale and preschoolers’ externalizing behavior problems as reported by teachers. With a sample of 173 predominantly clinically referred preschoolers (76.9% boys) we tested a longitudinal model proposing that affective dyadic flexibility …

A Concept Analysis Of Resilience Integrating Genetics, Kosuke Niitsu, Julia F. Houfek, Cecilia R. Barron, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Kevin A. Kupzyk, Michael J. Rice Jan 2017

A Concept Analysis Of Resilience Integrating Genetics, Kosuke Niitsu, Julia F. Houfek, Cecilia R. Barron, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Kevin A. Kupzyk, Michael J. Rice

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although clinicians and researchers are interested in the phenomenon of resilience, there is no agreed-upon definition of resilience. Scientific evidence suggests that resilience is influenced by intrapersonal (e.g., personality traits) and environmental (e.g., social support) variables. A concept analysis was conducted to better understand the meaning of resilience. In this analysis, the antecedent of resilience was a potentially traumatic event; the defining attributes were ego-resiliency, emotion regulation, social support, and heredity; and the consequences were none to mild psychopathological symptoms and positive adaptation. This analysis can help nurses better understand resilience and its relationships …

Caged Oysters Still Get Scared: Predator Presence And Density Influence Growth In Oysters, But Only At Very Close Ranges, Stephen Gosnell J., Kali Spurgin, Erica A. Levine Jan 2017

Caged Oysters Still Get Scared: Predator Presence And Density Influence Growth In Oysters, But Only At Very Close Ranges, Stephen Gosnell J., Kali Spurgin, Erica A. Levine

Publications and Research

Two common forms of variation that may influence consumptive and non-consumptive effects differently are how the biomass of predators is allocated among individual predators (e.g., several small vs few large predators) and how predators are spaced throughout a community. We analyzed how varying the presence, biomass (density, size, and total biomass), and distance to crown conchs (Melongena corona) impacted growth in eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) grown in field conditions. The presence of predators decreased growth (new shell added and mass) and increased shell thickness in a 58-day experiment. Although these effects were more pronounced as predator …

A Human Gut Commensal Ferments Cranberry Carbohydrates To Produce Formate, Ezgi Özcan, Jiadong Sun, David C. Rowley, David A. Sela Jan 2017

A Human Gut Commensal Ferments Cranberry Carbohydrates To Produce Formate, Ezgi Özcan, Jiadong Sun, David C. Rowley, David A. Sela

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Commensal bifidobacteria colonize the human gastrointestinal tract and catabolize glycans that are impervious to host digestion. Accordingly, Bifidobacterium longum typically secretes acetate and lactate as fermentative end products. This study tested the hypothesis that B. longum utilizes cranberry-derived xyloglucans in a strain-dependent manner. Interestingly, the B. longum strain that efficiently utilizes cranberry xyloglucans secretes 2.0 to 2.5 mol of acetate-lactate. The 1.5 acetate:lactate ratio theoretical yield obtained in hexose fermentations shifts during xyloglucan metabolism. Accordingly, this metabolic shift is characterized by increased acetate and formate production at the expense of lactate. α-l-Arabinofuranosidase, an arabinan endo-1,5-α-l-arabinosidase, and a β-xylosidase with a …

The Interactions Of Single-Wall Carbon Nanohorns With Polar Epithelium, Yujie Shi, Zujin Shi, Suxin Li, Yuan Zhang, Bing He, Dong Peng, Jie Tian, Ming Zhao, Xueqing Wang, Qiang Zhang

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs), which have multitudes of horn interstices, an extensive surface area, and a spherical aggregate structure, offer many advantages over other carbon nanomaterials being used as a drug nanovector. The previous studies on the interaction between SWCNHs and cells have mostly emphasized on cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking, but seldom on epithelial cells. Polar epithelium as a typical biological barrier constitutes the prime obstacle for the transport of therapeutic agents to target site. This work tried to explore the permeability of SWCNHs through polar epithelium and their abilities to modulate transcellular transport, and evaluate the potential of …

A New Approach To Inquiry, Dean William Lanois Jan 2017

A New Approach To Inquiry, Dean William Lanois

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the theories that govern three processes of learning: project-based, problem-based and self-regulated. One of the critical questions that this paper addresses is: how can these three processes be utilized to plan an effective unit? Studies have shown that students benefit motivationally from various inquiry-based models of instruction. These models mirror authentic tasks performed in the real world and engage the students in an in-depth way that compels them to use higher order thinking skills. Self-regulation is a set of necessary skills students must use to prepare and perform these types of tasks. As one studies these three …

Input Data Scale Impacts On Modeling Output Results: A Review Jan 2017

Input Data Scale Impacts On Modeling Output Results: A Review

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The measurement scale is one of the most important aspects of remote sensing and hydrological modeling studies. Changes pertinent to scale or resolution of input data are reflected in modeling results. This study discusses different types of scales, resampling and rescaling techniques and several potential scale issues as addressed by past studies. Specifically, scale impacts of digital elevation model (DEM) and land use and land cover (LULC) data impacts on hydrological modeling results are discussed. Higher resolution data can accurately describe watershed characteristics but can be computationally intensive. Therefore, it becomes important to select a data resolution, which aides in …

Representing Reality: The Social Organisational Insight And Potential Of Stephen Willats Diagrams., Gráinne Coughlan Jan 2017

Representing Reality: The Social Organisational Insight And Potential Of Stephen Willats Diagrams., Gráinne Coughlan

Conference papers

This paper focuses on the work of British artist Stephen Willats, who’s practice beginning in 1963 increasingly concerned the expanded territory of art beyond the gallery. In particular, it will discuss how Willats’ interest in modelling social systems required the use of visual representation including diagrams, largely considered beyond the conventions of art making, but utilised by Willats as a new mode to articulate social realities.

As a consequence of his understanding of cybernetics gained from time as a student on Roy Ascott’s Groundcourse at Ealing School of Art, Willats’ investigated ideas of self organisation, feedback and self determination outside …

Apopo Annual Report 2017, Apopo

Global CWD Repository

APOPO is a global nonprofit organization that researches, develops, and implements scent-detection technology to combat global humanitarian issues. APOPO’s detection rats currently detect landmines or tuberculosis in 5 affected countries around the world.

The rats are trained through clicker/reward methods, receiving tasty food treats when they identify explosives or tuberculosis. They are never harmed, because they are too light to actually set off any landmines and are cared for under strict animal welfare guidelines.

APOPO has mine action programmes in Angola, Cambodia, and Mozambique and is preparing operations in Zimbabwe and Colombia. APOPO also detects tuberculosis in Tanzania and Mozambique, …

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors State Of The Science: Leveraging Clinical And Biological Insights Into Effective Therapies., Aerang Kim, Douglas R Stewart, Karlyne M Reilly, David Viskochil, Markku M Miettinen, Brigitte C Widemann

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. In 2002, an MPNST consensus statement reviewed the current knowledge and provided guidance for the diagnosis and management of MPNST. Although the improvement in clinical outcome has not changed, substantial progress has been made in understanding the natural history and biology of MPNST through imaging and genomic advances since 2002. Genetically engineered mouse models that develop MPNST spontaneously have greatly facilitated preclinical evaluation of novel drugs for translation into clinical trials led by consortia efforts. Continued work in identifying alterations that contribute …

Employing The Enzyme Cofactor Function Of Ascorbic Acid To Affect Oncogenic Pathways In Human Melanoma: Modulating Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1Α And Dna Demethylation To Reduce Malignant Potential, Adam Patrick Fischer Jan 2017

Employing The Enzyme Cofactor Function Of Ascorbic Acid To Affect Oncogenic Pathways In Human Melanoma: Modulating Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1Α And Dna Demethylation To Reduce Malignant Potential, Adam Patrick Fischer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Dioxygenase enzymes such as the HIF hydroxylases (PHD1-3, FIH) and the Ten-eleven translocation (TET1-3) enzymes regulate the activity of the hypoxia inducible factor-1a (HIF1a) transcription factor and the DNA methylation status of cells, respectively. Aberrant accumulation and activation of HIF-1a can allow malignant cells to acquire attributes that promote progression, chemotherapy resistance, and survival, while aberrant hypermethylation of gene promoters can silence the expression of tumor suppressor genes essential to preventing tumorigenesis. Inadequate levels of intracellular ascorbic acid (AA), a necessary cofactor for optimal dioxygenase enzyme function, could potentiate these tumorigenic conditions. In fact, plasma levels …
