Microorganism-Mediated Behaviour Of Malaria Mosquitoes, Annette Obukosia Busula Jan 2017

Microorganism-Mediated Behaviour Of Malaria Mosquitoes, Annette Obukosia Busula

All PhD Dissertations

Host-seeking is an important component of mosquito vectorial capacity on which the success of the other behavioural determinants depends. Blood-seeking mosquitoes are mainly guided by chemical cues released by their blood hosts. This thesis describes results of a study that determined the effect of microorganisms – host skin bacteria as well as malaria parasites – on host-seeking behaviour of female Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto and An. arabiensis in Homabay county, western Kenya. Semi-field and field experiments were conducted to determine the response of mosquitoes with different host preference to synthetic and natural odour blends from three vertebrate hosts, a human, …

Ecological, Behavioural And Biochemical Traits Of African Meliponine Bee Species (Apidae:Meliponini) In A Biodiverse Hotspot Of Kenya, Bridget Obhagiagie Aito-Bobadoye Jan 2017

Ecological, Behavioural And Biochemical Traits Of African Meliponine Bee Species (Apidae:Meliponini) In A Biodiverse Hotspot Of Kenya, Bridget Obhagiagie Aito-Bobadoye

All PhD Dissertations

This study was carried out with the aim of assessing habitat ecology and behavioral mechanisms critical for the survival of African meliponine bee species. This will help to fully decipher how they effectively communicate information amongst colony members during two vital ecological processes (colony defense and foraging). Surveys of the floral phenology of potential food plants of African meliponine bees (Apidae: meliponini) in six diverse habitat gradients, observed that most flowering plants overlapped across seasons, which could potentially provide both floral resources (nectar and pollen) to foraging; meliponine bee species. Approximately 80 different plant species belonging to 34 families were …

Model Rule 8.4(G): Blatantly Unconstitutional And Blatantly Political, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

In 2016 the American Bar Association adopted a new Rule 8.4(g) in its Model Rules of Professional Conduct. The rule provides, inter alia, that a lawyer may not “engage in conduct that the lawyer knows or reasonably should know is harassment or discrimination on the basis of” several listed factors “in conduct related to the practice of law.” Comment 3 to the new rule provides that “discrimination” in the rule “includes harmful verbal or physical conduct that manifests bias or prejudice towards others.”

The new rule effects several major changes. It extends its prohibition to behavior that a lawyer …

Pharmacological Analysis Of The Feeding Response Of Codling Moth (Cydia Pomonella; Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Neonates To Bitter Compounds, Maciej A. Pszczolkowski Jan 2017

Pharmacological Analysis Of The Feeding Response Of Codling Moth (Cydia Pomonella; Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Neonates To Bitter Compounds, Maciej A. Pszczolkowski

College of Agriculture

Feeding in codling moth neonate caterpillars was inhibited by 0.67 mM and 2.24 mM concentrations of denatonium benzoate. This inhibitory effect was abolished by phospholipase C inhibitor, U-73122 and the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, Rolipram. Quinine and quinidine did not have inhibitory effects at concentrations as high as 1.64 mM and 0.43 mM, respectively. The inhibitory effect of denatonium was partially reversed in the presence of the calcium ion chelator, EGTA, at concentrations ranging from 2.5 μM to 250 μM. These results indicate that transduction of the taste of denatonium in codling moth neonates relies on signalling pathways that involve phospholipase C, …

Neuronal Gq Structures In Neurodegeneration, Damian S. Mcaninch Jan 2017

Neuronal Gq Structures In Neurodegeneration, Damian S. Mcaninch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates protein nucleic acid interactions between various proteins and G quadruplex (GQ) forming messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in human neurological disorders. GQ structures are formed in DNA/RNA, when four guanine residues form planar tetrads stabilized by Hoogsteen base pairing, that stack forming a GQ structure stabilized by potassium ions. These GQ structures are targeted by the arginine-glycine-glycine (RGG) repeat domain containing RNA-binding domain.

Three RGG domain containing RNA-binding proteins, all of which have been implicated in neurological disorders, and their interactions with GQ forming mRNAs, were investigated in this study: fused in sarcoma (FUS), fragile X mental retardation protein …

Experiences And Perceptions Of Rural Postpartum Women With Substance Use Disorders Inclusive Of Opioids Regarding Their Care, Debra Kramlich Jan 2017

Experiences And Perceptions Of Rural Postpartum Women With Substance Use Disorders Inclusive Of Opioids Regarding Their Care, Debra Kramlich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perinatal opioid use and neonatal withdrawal continue to rise rapidly in the face of the growing epidemic of opioid addiction in the United States, with rural areas more severely impacted. Despite several decades of research and development of practice guidelines, maternal and neonatal outcomes have not improved substantially. This focused ethnography aimed to address that gap by exploring rural women’s experiences and perceptions of care to inform development of efficacious, holistic models of care to improve outcomes for these women and their children. Participant observations, oral accounts and formal interviews, and artifact review (i.e., health records, any print and electronic …

Hope In Addiction Recovery: Eschatological Foundations In Celebrate Recovery And The Genesis Process, Judith M. Naegeli Jan 2017

Hope In Addiction Recovery: Eschatological Foundations In Celebrate Recovery And The Genesis Process, Judith M. Naegeli

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

This project attempts to understand the theological foundations of two nationally known Christian addiction recovery programs currently operating in Seattle, Washington: Celebrate Recovery and The Genesis Process. Of particular focus is the presence or absence of Christianity’s unique sense of hope for the future, using eschatological themes of hope, resurrection, and shalom. The participant materials of each program were analyzed for their use of these themes, using Richard Osmer's framework of the four tasks of practical theology.

Mechanochemical Synthesis Of Fuels From Sustainable Sources Utilizing Solid Catalysts, Jacob Todd Jan 2017

Mechanochemical Synthesis Of Fuels From Sustainable Sources Utilizing Solid Catalysts, Jacob Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanochemistry requires less solvents which results in less waste generation. The question becomes can we apply mechanochemistry to current chemical reactions and reduce the generation of waste. This process can be simple or can be very extensive resulting in the generation of large amounts of waste and very little product. A significant advantage of mechanochemistry is the reduced need for solvents that would be common place for reactions. Mechanochemistry transfers energy to reagents via impacts from milling media. Energy can be transferred to the reagents no matter their state-of-matter. Much of the current studies in mechanochemistry today are done using …

Patch-Occupancy Survey Of Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Surrounding Livingstone, Zambia, David Youldon, Jackie Abell, Joanne Briffitt, Bruce A. Schulte Jan 2017

Patch-Occupancy Survey Of Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Surrounding Livingstone, Zambia, David Youldon, Jackie Abell, Joanne Briffitt, Bruce A. Schulte

Biology Faculty Publications

Wild elephants represent the biggest human–wildlife conflict issue in Livingstone, Zambia. However, little is known about their movements. This survey investigated elephants’ habitat use outside a core protected and fenced zone that forms part of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia. Using ‘patch-occupancy’ methodology, indications of elephant presence (feeding behaviour, dung and tracks) were surveyed. The survey aimed to assist proposed future monitoring exercises by defining the geographical extent that should be considered to improve accuracy in species abundance estimates. Results were supplemented using collected indications of elephant presence from prior monitoring exercises, and during this survey. Elephant presence was confirmed up …

A Spanner In The Works: Human–Elephant Conflict Complicates The Food–Water–Energy Nexus In Drylands Of Africa, Bruce Schulte, Mwangi Githiru, Urbanus Mutwiwa, Simon Kasaine

Biology Faculty Publications

The two major conservation issues for drylands of Africa are habitat loss or degradation and habitat fragmentation, largely fromagriculture, charcoal production, and infrastructural development. A key question for management is how these landscapes can retain their critical ecological functions and services, while simultaneously supporting resilient livelihoods. It is a clear nexus question involving food (agriculture), water, and energy (fuelwood), which is complicated by human–wildlife conflicts. While these could appear disparate issues, they are closely connected in dryland forest landscapes of Africa where elephants occur close to areas of human habitation. For instance, crop failure, whether due to weather or wildlife …

Management Skills For The Contemporary College President: A Critical Review, David V. Tolliver Iii, Jahn W. Murry Jr. Jan 2017

Management Skills For The Contemporary College President: A Critical Review, David V. Tolliver Iii, Jahn W. Murry Jr.

Journal of Research on the College President

This review of the literature related to the contemporary college president attempted to describe changes to the presidential role during the past 30 years. In addition to describing changes to the role, the review explores the personal, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills required for leading a contemporary university. The findings particularly note that with the changing demands for accountability in higher education, presidents are being forced to spend more of their time and be more focused on issues of finance, law, and public interactions. These issues tend to collide in discussions of public policy and within the framework of state …

Feline And Canine Figures In The Art Of Teotihuacan, Mexico : A Review And Reassessment Of Major Interpretations Of Predatory Animal Imagery In The City Of The Gods, Charles R. Stapleton Jan 2017

Feline And Canine Figures In The Art Of Teotihuacan, Mexico : A Review And Reassessment Of Major Interpretations Of Predatory Animal Imagery In The City Of The Gods, Charles R. Stapleton

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The feline and canine figures of Teotihuacan's mural paintings communicate a surprisingly wide range of concepts and feature a rich array of associations. This variation was generated in part by the complex socio-political, economic and religious systems of this monumental, cosmopolitan city that permeated its central Mexican highland core and formed long-distance ties across Classic period Mesoamerica during its tenure (1-550/650 CE). Teotihuacan feline and canine imagery is best known for its military and sacrificial associations, a group of interpretations often supported by direct historical analogy to the Late-Postclassic Mexica-Aztec Jaguar and Eagle warrior sodalities. Although this line of reasoning …
