Pteropus Voeltzkowi And The Understory: A Study Of The Behavioral Impacts Of The Pemba Flying Fox On The Vegetation And Soil Quality Of Pemba Island, Lea Davidson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study examines the impact of Pteropus voeltzkowi , colloquially known as the Pemba Flying Fox, on biodiversity and health of the forest ground layer. Known to serve as reforesters, high concentrations of both fruit seeds and nutrient dense guano are introduced into specific environmental locations due to the bat's behavioral patterns. Working around two roost locations, one in Ngezi Forest and the other at the Kidike conservation site near Mjini Ole, diversity of juvenile vegetation was measured and quantified. In a laboratory setting, soil samples from both sites were analyzed for impacts of guano concentration on soil chemical properties. …

Fabrication Of High-Transmission Microporous Membranes By Proton Beam Writing-Based Molding Technique, Liping Wang, Clemens Meyer, Edouard Guibert, Alexandra Homsy, Harry J. Whitlow
Louisiana Accelerator Center
Porous membranes are widely used as filters in a broad range of micro and nanofluidic applications, e.g. organelle sorters, permeable cell growth substrates, and plasma filtration. Conventional silicon fabrication approaches are not suitable for microporous membranes due to the low mechanical stability of thin film substrates. Other techniques like ion track etching are limited to the production of randomly distributed and randomly orientated pores with non-uniform pore sizes. In this project, we developed a procedure for fabricating high-transmission microporous membranes by proton beam writing (PBW) with a combination of spin-casting and soft lithography. In this approach, focused 2 MeV protons …

A Brief Look At The Evolution Of Modeling Hyperbolic Space, Shelby Frazier
A Brief Look At The Evolution Of Modeling Hyperbolic Space, Shelby Frazier
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Now considered one of the greatest discoveries of mathematical history, hyperbolic geometry was once laughed at and deemed insignificant. Credited most to Lobachevsky and Bolyai, they independently discovered the subject by proving the negation of Euclid’s Fifth Postulate but neither lived long enough to see their work receive any validation. Several models have been constructed since its acceptance as a subject. I’m going to discuss three graphical models: the Klein Model, the Upper Half Plane Model and the Poincaré Disk Model. I will also discuss and construct three tape and paper models: the Annular Model, the Polyhedral Model and the …
The Roles Of Perceived Stress, Coping Styles, And Perceived Social Support On The Alcohol Consumption Among American College Students, Jesse Wynn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The intention of this study was to better understand how certain aspects in a college student's life (i.e., perceived stress, styles of coping, and social support) or how combinations of these variables may contribute to higher levels of alcohol consumption. The present study examined the relationship between perceived stress, functional coping strategies, dysfunctional coping strategies, and perceived social support using Lazarus and Folkman's model of stress, appraisal, and coping. A sample of (N = 201) University of Denver undergraduate students between the ages of 18-25 complete measures of perceived stress, coping strategies, perceived social support, and alcohol use. Results …
Ancestral Queerness: Normativity And Deviance In The Abraham And Sarah Narratives, Gil Rosenberg
Ancestral Queerness: Normativity And Deviance In The Abraham And Sarah Narratives, Gil Rosenberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interpreters of the Abraham and Sarah narratives in Gen 11-21 often focus on the importance of the line of inheritance, through a particular biological child. While they also note the many irregularities in Abraham and Sarah's familial relationships and activities, there has been no sustained attention to the combination of deviance and normativity that characterizes these narratives. I argue that, due to their particular combinations of normativity and deviance, Abraham and Sarah are Queer, where Queer is a general, cross-cultural category which includes but is not limited to contemporary forms of queerness (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, etc.).

Shhhuicide Stories: A Crip Critical Analysis Of Attempt Survivors' Narrations Of Suicidality, Emily Krebs
Shhhuicide Stories: A Crip Critical Analysis Of Attempt Survivors' Narrations Of Suicidality, Emily Krebs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Estimations suggest that one person in the United States tries to take their own life every 38 seconds (Yeager & Roberts, 2015, p. 38), making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in the nation (AFSP, 2016). Despite the prevalence of this issue, communication surrounding suicidality remains scarce - as do concrete understandings of what causes the desire to die in the first place. Dominant understandings link suicidality to chemical/neurobiological issues in the brain (mental illnesses), but these claims have not yet been scientifically proven (Hjelmeland, Dieserud, Dyregrov, Knizek, & Leenaars, 2012) and, as this study suggests, biomedical aspects of …
Dense Core Vesicle Heterogeneity In Anterior Pituitary Cells, Kelly Sinak
Dense Core Vesicle Heterogeneity In Anterior Pituitary Cells, Kelly Sinak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Peptides, which are packaged in dense core vesicles, are an integral part of the function of the endocrine and neurological systems. The dense core vesicles function as an efficient form of peptide storage prior to regulated exocytosis. Two different dense core specific transmembrane proteins traffic different when comparted to retained prolactin cores, offering evidence of heterogeneity of vesicles within a single cell. By comparing synaptotagmin 1 and 7 distribution in male rat and lactating female lactotrophs, a distinct pattern emerges. Cells that retain prolactin cores after exocytosis correspond with those that contain synaptotagmin 1. This finding is a reversal for …

The In Vivo Effect Of Oil Palm Phenolics (Opp) In Atherogenic Diet Induced Rats Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease (Ad), Yan Wu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the aging population. It is characterized by cognitive decline and deposition of ß-amyloid plaques in the hippocampus. It has been shown that hypercholesterolemia induced by high cholesterol diet is associated with AD development. Increased level of oxidative stress has also been observed in AD patients. An important strategy to treat or delay the impairment is based on dietary modification, using food supplements. OPP, a water soluble fraction from oil palm fruit, rich in phenolics has been found to possess significant antioxidant activities. Its beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes …

Utilization Of Pyrosequencing To Monitor The Microbiome Dynamics Of Probiotic Treated Poultry (Gallus Gallus Domesticus) During Downstream Poultry Processing, Vamsy Priya Guttala, Enrique G. Medrano, Joey Bray, Beatrice Clack
Faculty Publications
Antibiotic growth promoters that have been historically employed to control pathogens and increase the rate of animal development for human consumption are currently banned in many countries. Probiotics have been proposed as an alternative to control pathogenic bacteria. Traditional culture methods typically used to monitor probiotic effects on pathogens possess significant limitations such as a lack in sensitivity to detect fastidious and non-culturable bacteria, and are both time consuming and costly. Here, we tested next generation pyrosequencing technology as a streamline and economical method to monitor the effects of a probiotic on microbial communities in juvenile poultry (Gallus gallus …
Atlas Of Maine: Vernal Pools And Drought Areas For September 2016, Thomas J. Kiffney
Atlas Of Maine: Vernal Pools And Drought Areas For September 2016, Thomas J. Kiffney
Atlas of Maine
Vernal pools are important pools of water that are only filled during spring and fall months. During the summer months they are typically dry. They are important habitats for many amphibians, reptiles, and insects. This map depicts the significant vernal pool locations in Maine and drought conditions in the month of September 2016 and the amount/location of vernal pools that fell in drought areas. The map was made by overlaying national drought data for the 6, 13, 20, and 27th of September 2016. The data was clipped to the state of Maine and the vernal pools were added along …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Many cells experience hypoxia, or low oxygen, and respond by dramatically altering gene expression. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, genes that respond are required for many oxygen-dependent cellular processes, such as respiration, biosynthesis, and redox regulation. To more fully characterize the global response to hypoxia, we exposed yeast to hypoxic conditions, extracted RNA at different times, and performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis. Time-course statistical analysis revealed hundreds of genes that changed expression by up to 550-fold. The genes responded with varying kinetics suggesting that multiple regulatory pathways are involved. We identified most known oxygen-regulated genes and also uncovered new …

Examing The Effects Of Energy Deprivation On The Strength Model Of Self-Control: An Imposition Theory, Jiayin Qu
Psychology Honors Projects
The strength model of self control suggests exerting self-control consumes an energy resource that is depleted in subsequent tasks. Past research is equivocal whether such depletion happens and whether glucose can reverse it. We proposed an imposition theory to reconcile the contradiction: (1) energy deprivation is a prerequisite condition; (2) awareness of deprivation modulates the extent of depletion. The results suggested that rats showed more self-control depletion and performance across different conditions was more consistent when food deprived compared to when not. There was also a marginal effect of awareness of the deprivation.

Three Essays On Food Safety Regulations And International Trade Of Agricultural Products, Jun Ho Seok
Three Essays On Food Safety Regulations And International Trade Of Agricultural Products, Jun Ho Seok
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This dissertation investigates food safety regulations and international trade of agricultural products dividing into three aspects: the signalling effect from U.S. strict food safety regulations on U.S. vegetable exports, political determinants of sanitary and photosanitary non-tariff barriers, and the impact of trade barriers on employment in developing countries. In chapter 2, we investigate the impact of high U.S. maximum residue limit (MRL) standards on U.S vegetable exports to 102 countries utilizing the hierarchical model. MRL, which is one of non-tariff barriers with respect to food safety, is applied to home and foreign countries at the same time. Thus, firms in …

Statistical Hybrid Detection And The Inference Of Ancestral Distribution Areas In Tolpis (Asteraceae), Michael Gruenstaeudl, Bryan C. Carstens, Arnoldo Santos-Guerra, Robert K. Jansen
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Many historical biogeographic studies do not account for the effect of hybrid taxa on phylogenetic tree inference, despite recent advances in the statistical identification of such taxa. This investigation aims to illustrate the impact that hybrid taxa can have on ancestral area reconstructions of the plant genus Tolpis, which displays an evolutionary history possibly indicative of a back-colonization of the continental Mediterranean. We evaluate and apply two statistical hybrid detection methods, JML and STEM-hy, which assist in identifying reticulate patterns of allele coalescence. We also evaluate and apply a software tool, P2C2M, to test the fit of genetic loci to …

The Relevance Of Victims' Organizations In The Transitional Justice Process: The Case Of The Grandmothers Of Plaza De Mayo In Argentina, Dr. Valeria Vegh Weis
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
The case of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo has been extensively discussed, but most commentators focus on two aspects: its "uniqueness," and its "meaningful participation" in the transitional justice process. This paper challenges the traditional commentary by concentrating on the complexity of the Grandmother's experience and its potential to be replicated by other victims' organizations in other parts of the globe. The paper also proposes replacing the traditional goal of "meaningful participation" - focused on a victim-centered or victim-oriented perspective - by means of a victim-driven approach. To do this, the article analyzes the success of the Grandmothers by …

Access To Trade Secret Environmental Information: Are Trips And Trips Plus Obligations A Hidden Landmine?, Dalindyebo Shabalala
School of Law Faculty Publications
Freedom of Information Acts (FOIAs) have been fundamental to enabling access to environmental information. The effectiveness of domestic and international environmental regulatory standards has been dependent on ensuring strong information access regimes, especially for information submitted to governments by firms. However, there has been an ongoing tension between providing and accessing complete regulatory information on the one hand, and the interest in maintaining the economic value of trade secrets. Such tensions have historically been managed at the domestic level within constitutional structures balancing access to information, privacy interests, and economic interests. However, the almost simultaneous advent of international norms and …
