My First Year Research Experience, Itzel Guillen Jan 2017

My First Year Research Experience, Itzel Guillen

Posters and Presentations

Hello, my name is Itzel Guillen. I am a graduate of Rio Grande High School, and a freshman at UNM. I am a participant in the FYRE (First Year Research Experience) program.

FYRE gave me the opportunity to work more on a project that I participated in while I was in high school: RAPS. My research interest is the response of adults who were part of the project.

As a freshman, finding a mentor can be hard. Many students need more experience, but there may not be many open opportunities. For my mentor, I contacted Courtney FitzGerald at the UNM …

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh Jan 2017

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh

Theology Graduate Theses

The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). While not denying the fact that the Old Testament can rightly be viewed as a product of predominantly male authors and features a galaxy of male actors, it …

A Current And Increasing Problem Of Anti-Social Behavior Via Anonymity Using Electronic Mediums Demanding Recognition As A Biophsychosocial Disorder That Perpetuates Criminal Behavior Online, Hannah Wood Despres Jan 2017

A Current And Increasing Problem Of Anti-Social Behavior Via Anonymity Using Electronic Mediums Demanding Recognition As A Biophsychosocial Disorder That Perpetuates Criminal Behavior Online, Hannah Wood Despres

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Most people who commit crime fall into a classification of criminological, sociological or psychological disorders called biopsychosocial disorders. Cyber-crime is unique in the fact that, cyber criminals can commit crimes behind completely closed doors and they are virtually anonymous. This makes for a varied environment of theory on the causation of cyber-crimes. The proposed disorder theory, computer mediated anonymity asocial disordered theory, is based on the notion that the anonymous nature of electronic mediums in communication has significantly changed people’s interpersonal skills. The change in interpersonal development is therefore affecting social engagement behavior online and has allowed a lack of …

Reproductive Biology And Natural History Of The White-Lipped Pit Viper (Trimeresurus Albolabris Gray, 1842) In Hong Kong, Anne Devan-Song, Paolo Martelli, Nancy E. Karraker

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

The White-lipped Pit Viper (Trimeresurus albolabris) is broadly distributed through South and Southeast Asia, and very little is known about the natural history of the species. In this study, we report on the ecology, demography, reproductive states, and growth rates of T. albolabris in Hong Kong, China. The sex ratio is even in Trimeresurus albolabris populations. This species displays sexual dimorphism from birth. Females attain larger sizes, and all males, including neonates, displaying a white supralabial stripe on the head and have longer relative tail lengths. Males attain sexual maturity at about 410 mm snout-vent length (SVL). Females …

Assessing The Density Of Vegetation For Wildlife Cover In Regenerating Clearcuts Via Analysis Of Digital Imagery, Bill Buffum, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2017

Assessing The Density Of Vegetation For Wildlife Cover In Regenerating Clearcuts Via Analysis Of Digital Imagery, Bill Buffum, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Increasing the availability of shrubland habitat is a major conservation priority in the Northeastern United States because many wildlife species require this habitat and its extent has been decreasing in recent decades. Conservation agencies often monitor the number of hectares of shrubland habitat created, but rarely monitor the density of the resulting vegetation because the process is tedious and time-consuming. The current study tested a new approach to assess vegetation density: Digital Imagery Vegetation Analysis (DIVA). We compared the density estimates of DIVA with four other methods (Cover Board, Robel Pole, Height of Obstruction, and Line Intercept), and assessed the …

Effects Of Socs1 And Socs3 Peptide Mimetics On Macrophage Phagocytosis Of Malignant Cells, Colt Dylan Capan

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Macrophages play a key role in both the innate and adaptive immune system responses to foreign materials. Suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins are known as regulators of the immune response through various JAK/STAT pathways. This study examined the roles of SOCS1 and SOCS3 peptide mimetics on the phagocytosis of fluorescently labeled malignant target cell by RAW264.7 murine macrophages. The malignant cells used were Neuro-2a cells, a murine neuroblastoma cell line. A prominent "eat me" signal found in neuroblastoma cells is calreticulin (CRT), which permits macrophages to recognize and then phagocytize the malignant cells. When M1 (pro-inflammatory) polarized macrophages were …

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Sydnone Derived 1,3,4-Oxadiazol-2(3h)-Ones, Jonathan Michael Tumey

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

5-(Bromomethyl)- and 5-(trichloromethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-ones were synthesized from bromocarbonyl hydrazine intermediate salts and acid halides to provide further evidence for our proposed mechanism for the formation of oxadiazolone ring systems from sydnones. 5-(Bromomethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one was a compound of interest due to its SN2 possibilities and three potential sites of diversification. The procedure to synthesize 5-(bromomethyl)-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one was developed originally by Madaram in the Turnbull lab, but was further optimized in the present work by altering the time, temperature and stoichiometric equivalents of the acid halide to provide high purity and excellent yields of the product. While this compound of interest had been isolated and …

Helicobacter pylori infection is the most important risk factor for gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM). Our previous study demonstrated that infection with H. pylori HpslyD-positive strains associated with IM. To further investigate the signalling pathway involved in HpSlyD-induced IM, CDX2 and VIL1 expressions were determined before and after HpSlyD application. TCTP was knocked down by siRNA or overexpressed by plasmid transfection. An HpSlyD binding protein was used to block HpSlyD’s enzymatic activity. The expression of CDX2 and TCTP in gastric diseases was measured by immunohistochemistry. Our results showed HpSlyD induced CDX2 and VIL1 expressions. TCTP protein expression was markedly increased …

Preparation Of A Peptide-Modified Electrode For Capture And Voltammetric Determination Of Endotoxin, Liu, Fanyu Meng, Wenbo Cheng, Haixuan Sun, Yan Luo, Yuguo Tang, Peng Miao

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Endotoxin is the major structural constituent of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, which is a great threat to human health. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical biosensor for the detection of endotoxin is established by recording the voltammetric responses of the peptide-modified electrode. The utilized peptide has a high affinity for the target endotoxin, which ensures the high selectivity of this method. After the capture of endotoxin on the electrode surface, a negatively charged layer is formed, and the electron-transfer process is significantly hindered because of the increased steric hindrance and the electrostatic repulsion. The declined electrochemical signal could be used …

Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications

Recent reports suggest that host-seeking nymphs in southern populations of Ixodes scapularis remain below the leaf litter surface, while northern nymphs seek hosts on leaves and twigs above the litter surface. This behavioral difference potentially results in decreased tick contact with humans in the south, and fewer cases of Lyme disease. We studied whether north-south differences in tick survival patterns might contribute to this phenomenon. Four month old larvae resulting from a cross between Wisconsin males and South Carolina females died faster under southern than under northern conditions in the lab, as has previously been reported for ticks from both …

Researchers have documented how race and racism influence the college experiences of U.S. citizens. However, research on the ways that race and racism affect international students warrants similar attention. This qualitative study explored how international students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism and how such concepts shaped their college experiences. The participating international college students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism through media, relationships, formal education, and lived experiences. They defined these concepts in varying ways and had varying racial ideologies.

The Morality Of Same Sex Marriage: How Not To Globalize A Cultural Anomie, Chris O. Akpan Jan 2017

The Morality Of Same Sex Marriage: How Not To Globalize A Cultural Anomie, Chris O. Akpan

Journal of Health Ethics

The question of the morality of same-sex marriage has become quite prevalent in the 21st century. Some western cultures believe that same-sex marriage is morally defensible and can be legalized. Using the human right fad and political might, they subtly engineer the globalization of this phenomenon. This move has been strongly opposed mostly by ‘developing’ nations and some churches across nations. The argument of such group is that same-sex marriage is immoral, unnatural and ungodly. This paper defends the thesis that same-sex marriage cannot morally be defended successfully. It shows that same-sex marriage is not exclusively a western phenomenon …

Here we report multiple lines of evidence for a comprehensive model of energy metabolism in the vertebrate eye. Metabolic flux, locations of key enzymes, and our finding that glucose enters mouse and zebrafish retinas mostly through photoreceptors support a conceptually new model for retinal metabolism. In this model, glucose from the choroidal blood passes through the retinal pigment epithelium to the retina where photoreceptors convert it to lactate. Photoreceptors then export the lactate as fuel for the retinal pigment epithelium and for neighboring Mu ̈ ller glial cells. We used human retinal epithelial cells to show that lactate can suppress …

For at-risk wildlife species, it is important to consider conservation within the process of adaptive management. Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) are Neotropical migratory songbirds that are experiencing long-term population declines due in part to the loss of early-successional nesting habitat. Recently-developed Golden-winged Warbler habitat management guidelines are being implemented by USDA: Natural Resource Conservation Service (2014) and its partners through the Working Lands For Wildlife (WLFW) program. During 2012–2014, we studied the nesting ecology of Golden-winged Warblers in managed habitats of the eastern US that conformed to WLFW conservation practices. We evaluated five NRCS “management scenarios” with respect …

The Modern Church Communicates: Rhetoric And Hypertext In Church Website Design, Edward Palmer Jan 2017

The Modern Church Communicates: Rhetoric And Hypertext In Church Website Design, Edward Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Internet and the World Wide Web have supplanted many paper-based information systems. People turn to the web to locate local services in the same way they find ecommerce sites such as Amazon. Churches of all sizes must develop effective and attractive websites to attract new members and inform existing members. These two groups form distinct audiences that must be correctly targeted by the website content. Other churches may visit to gather ideas for their programs; they are a third group of site visitors. Organization of hypertext on the web requires skills that are different than writing for print. Technical …

Sublethal Effects In Pest Management: A Surrogate Species Perspective On Fruit Fly Control, John E. Banks, Roger I. Vargas, Azmy S. Ackleh, John D. Stark Jan 2017

Sublethal Effects In Pest Management: A Surrogate Species Perspective On Fruit Fly Control, John E. Banks, Roger I. Vargas, Azmy S. Ackleh, John D. Stark

UROC Staff Publications and Presentations

Tephritid fruit flies are economically important orchard pests globally. While much effort has focused on controlling individual species with a combination of pesticides and biological control, less attention has been paid to managing assemblages of species. Although several tephritid species may co-occur in orchards/cultivated areas, especially in mixed-cropping schemes, their responses to pesticides may be highly variable. Furthermore, predictive efforts about toxicant effects are generally based on acute toxicity, with little or no regard to long-term population effects. Using a simple matrix model parameterized with life history data, we quantified the responses of several tephritid species to the sublethal effects …

Low-Stress Data Embedding In The Hyperbolic Plane Using Multidimensional Scaling, Andrej Cvetkovski, Mark Crovella Jan 2017

Low-Stress Data Embedding In The Hyperbolic Plane Using Multidimensional Scaling, Andrej Cvetkovski, Mark Crovella

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a technique used to produce two- or three-dimensional visualizations of similarities within datasets consisting of multidimensional points or point distances. Metric MDS can also be applied to the problems of graph embedding for approximate encoding of edge or path costs using node coordinates in metric space. Thus, MDS can be used both as a visualization tool and as a data embedding algorithm. Recent works have noted that for certain datasets, hyperbolic target space may provide a better fit than the traditionally used Euclidean space. In this paper we present several numerical examples of low-stress embedding of …

Category Theory As A Formal Mathematical Foundation For Model-Based Systems Engineering, Mohamed A. Mabrok, Michael J. Ryan Jan 2017

Category Theory As A Formal Mathematical Foundation For Model-Based Systems Engineering, Mohamed A. Mabrok, Michael J. Ryan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we introduce Category Theory as a formal foundation for model-based systems engineering. A generalised view of the system based on category theory is presented, where any system can be considered as a category. The objects of the category represent all the elements and components of the system and the arrows represent the relations between these components (objects). The relationship between these objects are the arrows or the morphisms in the category. The Olog is introduced as a formal language to describe a given real-world situation description and requirement writing. A simple example is provided.
