© 2017 The Author(s). Chronic levodopa treatment leads to the appearance of dyskinesia in the majority of Parkinson's disease patients. Neurovascular dysregulation in putaminal and pallidal regions is thought to be an underlying feature of this complication of treatment. We used microPET to study unilaterally lesioned 6-hydroxydopamine rats that developed levodopa-induced abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) after three weeks of drug treatment. Animals were scanned with [15O]-labeled water and [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose, to map regional cerebral blood flow and glucose metabolism, and with [11C]-isoaminobutyric acid (AIB), to assess blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability, following separate injections of levodopa or saline. Multitracer scan data were acquired …

Art Integration In Urban Elementary Schools: Can It Improve Student Learning Outcomes In Other Subject Areas?, Julie Flynn

Journal of Applied and Educational Research (2017-2019)

Teachers and students nationwide are struggling to address the disparity in academic achievement between students in urban, socioeconomically underprivileged and racially segregated school districts, and their more affluent, white, suburban counterparts. Poorer urban schools are also less likely to have adequate funding and support for arts programs. Educators must thus look outside of traditional learning models and explore all opportunities to engage their students and create learning opportunities. Arts integration has been shown to improve student attitudes and engagement, along with a potential to “transfer” skills and knowledge to other subject areas. This study sought to examine whether the integration …

Dry Run Creek (DRC) watershed is a primary drainage basin located in northwestern Black Hawk County (Figure 1). It is fed predominantly by agricultural runoff in its upper reaches, and becomes heavily urbanized as it travels through the city of Cedar Falls, before draining into the Cedar River. The stream is perennial, however some are tiled and new segments have developed both naturally and artificially. Re-evaluation of the creek is underway and indicates some changes in urban and rural areas. Data was collected between Fall 2016 & Fall 2017 by University of Northern Iowa geomorphology students, using handheld GPS devices …

Community Rain Gardens: Rainscaping Group Project Report, University Of Northern Iowa. Center For Energy & Environmental Education.

UNI Conservation Corps Projects

A rain garden is a depression created in a landscape that allows water runoff from rooftops, driveways, and/or streets to pool or be ponded. The water does not stay, it only captures this runoff and allows it to infiltrate into the ground recharging groundwater instead of running off into our sewer systems and in turn into our rivers and streams. Rain gardens are an infiltration-based storm water treatment management system. The idea here is to add beauty in the landscaping of these rain gardens while also treating home's rooftop and driveway runoff, which allows them to be both aesthetically pleasing …

Background: Airway microbiota dynamics during lower respiratory infection (LRI) are still poorly understood due, in part, to insufficient longitudinal studies and lack of uncontaminated lower airways samples. Furthermore, the similarity between upper and lower airway microbiomes is still under debate. Here we compare the diversity and temporal dynamics of microbiotas directly sampled from the trachea via tracheostomy in patients with (YLRI) and without (NLRI) lower respiratory infections. Methods: We prospectively collected 127 tracheal aspirates across four consecutive meteorological seasons (quarters) from 40 patients, of whom 20 developed LRIs and 20 remained healthy. All aspirates were collected when patients had no …

Examining The Interaction Of Mathematical Abilities And Mathematical Memory: A Study Of Problem-Solving Activity Of High-Achieving Swedish Upper Secondary Students, Attila Szabo, Paul Andrews

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper we investigate the abilities that six high-achieving Swedish upper secondary students demonstrate when solving challenging, non-routine mathematical problems. Data, which were derived from clinical interviews, were analysed against an adaptation of the framework developed by the Soviet psychologist Vadim Krutetskii (1976). Analyses showed that when solving problems students pass through three phases, here called orientation, processing and checking, during which students exhibited particular forms of ability. In particular, the mathematical memory was principally observed in the orientation phase, playing a crucial role in the ways in which students’ selected their problem-solving methods; where these methods failed to …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), such as Zika virus, chikungunya virus, and West Nile virus (WNV), pose continuous threats to emerge and cause large epidemics. Often, these events are associated with novel virus variants optimized for local transmission that first arise as minorities within a host. Thus, the conditions that regulate the frequency of intrahost variants are important determinants of emergence. Here, we describe the dynamics of WNV genetic diversity during its transmission cycle. By temporally sampling saliva from individual mosquitoes, we demonstrate that virus populations expectorated by mosquitoes are highly diverse and unique to each feeding episode. After transmission to birds, …
