A Structure-Preserving Modified Exponential Method For The Fisher–Kolmogorov Equation, Jorge E. Macıas-Dıaz, Stefania Tomasiello
A Structure-Preserving Modified Exponential Method For The Fisher–Kolmogorov Equation, Jorge E. Macıas-Dıaz, Stefania Tomasiello
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this work, we propose an exponential-type discretization of the well-known Fisher’s equation from population dynamics. Only non-negative, bounded and monotone solutions are physically relevant in this note, and the discretization that we provide is able to preserve these properties. The method is a modified explicit exponential technique which has the advantage of requiring a small amount of computational resources and computer time. It is worthwhile to notice that our technique has the advantage over other exponentiallike methodologies that it yields no singularities. In addition, the preservation of the properties of non-negativity, boundedness and monotonicity are distinctive features of our …

Steady Thermosolutocapillary Instability In Fluid Layer With Nondeformable Free Surface In The Presence Of Insoluble Surfactant And Gravity, Razihan Allias, Mohd Agos Salim Nasir, Seripah Awang Kechil
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Steady thermosolutocapillary instabilities in a horizontal thin fluid layer with deformable free surface and uniform temperature at the bottom boundary in the presence of insoluble surfactant and gravity force are examined. The surface tension at the free surface is assumed to be linearly dependent on temperature and concentration gradients. The linear stability theory and the Galerkin method are used to obtain the closed form solutions. The effects of the controlling parameters, namely the Rayleigh number, Biot number, Lewis number, and elasticity parameter on the onset of Marangoni convection are analyzed. The results show that the gravitational force acts as destabilizer …

On The Distribution Of The Ratio Of Two Hyper-Erlang Random Variables, Therrar Kadri, Khaled Smaili, Seifedine Kadry
On The Distribution Of The Ratio Of Two Hyper-Erlang Random Variables, Therrar Kadri, Khaled Smaili, Seifedine Kadry
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The distribution of ratio of two random variables has been studied by several authors especially when the two random variables are independent and come from the same family. In this paper, the exact distribution of the ratio of two independent Hyper- Erlang distribution is derived. However, closed expressions of the probability density, cumulative distribution function, reliability function, hazard function, moment generating function and the rth moment are found for this ratio distribution and proved to be a linear combination of the Generalized-F distribution. Moreover, the particular case, the ratio of two independent Hyper-Exponential distribution is examined.
Global Stability Of A Delayed Hiv-1 Model With Saturations Response, Nigar Ali, Gul Zaman, M. Ikhlaq Chohan
Global Stability Of A Delayed Hiv-1 Model With Saturations Response, Nigar Ali, Gul Zaman, M. Ikhlaq Chohan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this article, an HIV-1 infection dynamical model with saturation response including two continuous delays is presented. One delay represents the latent period between the time of contact of virus particles with targeted cells and the time of entering into the cells. While the other delay is used for the period of production of new virions that release from the infected cells. The basic reproduction number R0 is investigated and proved that if R0 ≤ 1, the infection-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. However, if R0 > 1, then an infected equilibrium occurs which is globally asymptotically stable. The analytical and …

Sumudu Computation Of The Transient Magnetic Field In A Lossy Medium, Fethi Bin Muhammad Belgacem, Eman H. Al-Shemas, Rathinavel Silambarasan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This research article aims at treating the transverse electromagnetic wave propagation in lossy media, labeled TEMP. Following the trail of works by Hussain and Belgacem, and Belgacem et al. towards getting the transient electric field solution of Maxwell’s equations, here we seek Sumudu transform based solution for transient magnetic field. Moreover, we feature connected interesting shifting properties of the Sumudu transform, some found useful in solving this very particular problem. Furthermore, we establish new analytico-numerical results, and exhibit graphical profiles of Sumudued ramp, gaussian pulse, and finite sinusoidal functions.

Non-Linear Heat And Mass Transfer Of Second Grade Fluid Flow With Hall Currents And Thermophoresis Effects, Nabil T. M. El-Dabe, A. Refaie Ali, A. A. El-Shekhipy, G. A. Shalaby
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A mathematical model analysis has been developed to investigate the effect of thermophoresis on unsteady flow of non- Newtonian fluid with heat and mass transfer through a porous medium over a permeable infinite vertical plate. The considered non- Newtonian fluid follows a second grade model and is stressed by a uniform strong magnetic field; so the Hall currents are taken into consideration. The problem is modulated mathematically by a system of coupled non-linear partial differential equations which pertaining to describe the continuity, momentum, energy and concentration. These equations involve the effects of thermal radiation, heat generation, thermal diffusion(Soret), viscous dissipation …
Note On A Picard-Like Method For Caputo Fuzzy Fractional Differential Equations, Stefania Tomasiello, Jorge E. Macıas-Dıaz
Note On A Picard-Like Method For Caputo Fuzzy Fractional Differential Equations, Stefania Tomasiello, Jorge E. Macıas-Dıaz
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A Picard-like approach which has been used to solve a class of Volterra integro-differential equations, is extended in this manuscript to solve fuzzy fractional differential equations. Such technique uses quadrature rules and Picard’s iterations in the fuzzy context. In spite of this, it is conceived to become a non-recursive scheme, in terms of operational matrices, in the linear regime. Some properties of the method are thoroughly discussed, and some numerical examples are provided in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Most of the earlier studies in the inventory control and management make assumption that the manufacturing system is reliable and does not fail. However, in the real industrial applications, there is no completely reliable manufacturing system; Machine failure occur and the production does not resume before repair. In this paper we will study and analyze the optimal lot size in a real production system which is not completely reliable. To obtain the optimal production quantity. Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) have been used for modeling and simulation. This approach combines the advantages of rule-base fuzzy …

Worksite cafeterias are compelling venues to improve diet quality through environmental changes.
We conducted a pre-post study to evaluate how a cafeteria-initiated grill menu redesign influenced sales, revenue, and nutrient content of foods purchased. Secondly, we evaluated consumer opinions about menu changes to inform practices for worksite environment interventions. Monthly sales data (2012-2015) were used to compute gross sales and revenue of entrées and side dishes pre-post menu changes. Alternative protein sources replaced red meat; nutrient composition and nutrients purchased were compared using Food Pro software. Consumer responses were queried using online surveys; open-ended responses were analyzed using NVivo. Differences …

Strategic Person And Organization Development: Implications Of Imago Dei For Contemporary Human Resource Management, Richard H. Jonsen
Strategic Person And Organization Development: Implications Of Imago Dei For Contemporary Human Resource Management, Richard H. Jonsen
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
This paper examines and compares the foundational assumptions of contemporary scholarship and practice on strategic human resource management to those embedded in emerging Christian faith-based approaches to business. An alternative ecumenical, biblically based set of assumptions for a Christian approach to strategic human resource management — or strategic person and organization development — is developed, along with corresponding set principles for future scholarship and practice.
Global Asymptotic Stability For Discrete Single Species Population Models, A. Bilgin, Mustafa Kulenovic
Global Asymptotic Stability For Discrete Single Species Population Models, A. Bilgin, Mustafa Kulenovic
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We present some basic discrete models in populations dynamics of single species with several age classes. Starting with the basic Beverton-Holt model that describes the change of single species we discuss its basic properties such as a convergence of all solutions to the equilibrium, oscillation of solutions about the equilibrium solutions, Allee’s effect, and Jillson’s effect. We consider the effect of the constant and periodic immigration and emigration on the global properties of Beverton-Holt model. We also consider the effect of the periodic environment on the global properties of Beverton-Holt model.

Coral colonies in Ka–ne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i (USA), are afflicted with the tissue loss disease chronic Montipora white syndrome (cMWS). Here we show that removal of chronic disease lesions is a potential method to slow the progression of cMWS in M. capitata. Over the 24 wk observation period, treatment colonies lost almost half the amount of tissue that was lost by control colonies. The percentage of tissue loss at each sampling interval (mean ± SEM; treatment: 1.17 ± 0.47%, control: 2.25 ± 0.63%) and the rate of tissue loss per day (treatment: 0.13 ± 0.04%, control: 0.27 ± 0.08%) were both …

Identification And Characterization Of Fungal Isolates From Land-Applied Sewage Sludge, Vaille Swenson, Hope L. Juntunen, R Honour, R C. Hale, Michael Gaylor, Patrick Videau
Research & Publications
Approximately eight million dry tons of sewage sludge is generated in the U.S. each year, with more than half of that now land-applied as the primary method of disposal. Despite the proliferation of this practice, little is known about the microbial constituents of these noxious materials. To address this knowledge gap, we isolated and characterized fungi present in archived samples of land-disposed sewage sludge collected from the Snoqualmie National Forest (Washington State). Sludge samples were resuspended in sterile water and 15 fungal isolates were selected and purified on sabouraud dextrose agar plates supplemented with 50 mg/L of chloramphenicol. Fungal morphology …

Casco Bay Climate Change Vulnerability Summary Report, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, Natural Choices, Waterview Consulting
Publications
The Casco Bay region is vulnerable to seven important climate stressors highlighted by the US Environmental Protection Agency: warmer summers; warmer winters; warmer waters; increased drought; increased storminess (evident in higher total precipitation, frequency and intensity); sea level rise; and ocean acidification (US EPA 2014). These climate stressors do not operate in isolation. Compounding their impacts are factors such as population growth, habitat fragmentation and destruction, and resource depletion that can further tax ecosystems and species.

The Hetz Gene Regulates Heterocyst Formation In Anabaena Sp. Strain Pcc 7120, Patrick Videau, Vaille Swenson, Michael Gaylor, S M. O'Hanlon, L M. Cozy
Research & Publications
To form a complex multicellular organism, stem cells must differentiate into each cell/tissue type along proper spatiotemporal scales. The study of differentiation and organismal development has historically been conducted in prokaryotes due to their genetic and morphological simplicity. Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 is a multicellular filamentous cyanobacterium that differentiates a morphologically distinct secondary cell type, the heterocyst, in response to a lack of combined environmental nitrogen. Heterocysts are regularly spaced along filaments and fix atmospheric dinitrogen to maintain organismal viability in its absence. Previous work suggested that the hetZ gene is involved in heterocyst differentiation, but the insertional mutants …

Scaling Up The Self, Scaling Down The World: Self-Objectification And The Politics Of Carbon Offsets And Personalised Genomics, Joshua Reno
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
Two global initiatives, the Genographic Project and the Carbon Lottery, share an ambition to make abstract, global processes—human evolution and climate change—comprehensible and engaging to non-specialists. Despite their differences, they both do so by means of self-objectifications that scale up the selves of participants and scale down complex, spatio-temporal models of human-world relations. Based on the author’s auto-ethnographic experience as a participant in both initiatives, it is argued that carbon calculators and personalised genomics involves a pragmatics of scale that evaluates and compares users on the basis of their relative expression of, or deviation from, a standard. Furthermore, this is …

The Anti-Sepsis Activity Of The Components Of Huanglian Jiedu Decoction With High Lipid A-Binding Affinity, Guirong Chen, Yubin Xu, Jing Jing, Brianna Mackie, Xinchuan Zheng, Xu Zhang, Jing Wang, Xuetao Li
Medicinal Chemistry Publications
Huanglian Jiedu Decoction (HJD), one of the classic recipes for relieving toxicity and fever, is a common method for treating sepsis in China. However, the effective components of HJD have not yet been identified. This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effective components of HJD against sepsis. Thus, seven fractions from HJD were tested using a biosensor to test their affinity for lipid A. The components obtained that had high lipid A-binding fractions were further separated, and their affinities to lipid A were assessed with the aid of a biosensor. The levels of LPS in the blood were measured, …

Detection Of Trends In The 7-Day Sustained Low-Flow Time Series Of Irish Rivers, Ahmed Nasr, Michael Bruen
Articles
A combination of statistical hypothesis testing methods (Mann-Whitney, Mann-Kendall and Spearman’s rho) and visual exploratory analysis were used to investigate trends in Irish 7-day sustained low-flow (7SLF) series possibly driven by changes in summer rainfall patterns. River flow data from 33 gauging stations covering most major Irish rivers were analysed, after excluding catchments where low flows are influenced by significant human interventions. A statistically significant increasing trend in the 7SLF series was identified by all three tests at eight gauging stations; in contrast, a statistically significant decreasing trend was identified by all three tests at four stations. The stations with …

Can Neuroscientific Studies Be Of Personal Value?, Andrew Mullins
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
This essay reflects on the ability of neuroscientific data to be of personal value and to enrich our lives by offering insight into our capacities for self management and choice. The theory of cognitive dualism proposed by Roger Scruton seeks to preserve rationality and allow for freedom of will, but he appears reluctant to engage with the data accruing in neural studies. I contrast this approach with a Thomistic hylomorphic approach to the philosophy of mind that is founded on participation in being. It offers the potential to draw on neurobiological knowledge for insights into rationality, motivation, and eudaimonia. …

This field experiment examined the effects of a gratefulness intervention in the context of a Christian church congregation. Two Christian congregations with comparable demographic and socio-economic characteristics were enrolled and assigned to the experimental and comparison conditions. The gratitude intervention was developed collaboratively with church leaders. Though within-subject effects were found for psychological well-being, spiritual well-being, life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, daily spiritual experiences, and favorable views of psychology and interdisciplinary collaboration, the comparison group showed similar increases to the intervention group. Thus, the effects of the gratitude intervention were supported within but not across groups. No significant changes …

Silver Nanoparticles And Drug Resistant Bacteria, Aliza Eisig
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The scientist who discovered penicillin and its use as an antibiotic, Alexander Fleming, also raised concerns about bacterial resistance. As he predicted, in the twenty first century, the overwhelming use of antibiotics has led to both drug- and multi-drug resistant bacteria. This paper attempts to investigate the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles against drug resistant bacteria. By using Touro's online library database, the efficacy of silver nanoparticles as a potential antibacterial agent was comprehensively researched. Using transmission electron microscopy and the disk diffusion method, silver nanoparticles have been found to exert bactericidal effects by adsorbing to the cell surface and …
