Eye Movements When Looking At Potential Friends And Romantic Partners, Omri Gillath, Angela J. Bahns, Hayley A. Burghart

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Eye movements of 105 heterosexual undergraduate students (36 males) were monitored while viewing photographs of men and women identified as a potential mate or a potential friend. Results showed that people looked at the head and chest more when assessing potential mates and looked at the legs and feet more when assessing potential friends. Single people looked at the photographs longer and more frequently than coupled people, especially when evaluating potential mates. In addition, eye gaze was a valid indicator of relationship interest. For women, looking at the head corresponded to greater interest in friendship, whereas for men looking at …

The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman Jan 2017

The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman

Integrated Studies

Abstract

Literacy and language development in early childhood has been shown to be closely correlated with future academic performance (Gullo, 2013). A strong foundation in literacy and language has the potential to affect all areas of educational growth (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009). Moreover, the role of the adult in facilitating the process of literacy and language development is highly critical for success (Heroman & Jones, 2010). Developmental theorists have variations in their views as to how children develop and learn, yet one common denominator exists with them all—the adult’s role in guiding children’s learning (Charlesworth, 2008). Researchers have compiled a …

Empathizing With Daddy: Child Maltreatment And Generational Alcoholism: Are They One In The Same?, Alexus Flowers

Integrated Studies

Everyone has “issues”. However, those “issues” can range from a numerous of things: self, family, work, mental, physical, or emotional (i.e “daddy issues” or “mommy issues”). According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, childhood exposure to trauma has been linked with alcohol dependence, suggesting that adverse childhood experiences contribute to this environmental risk.

For this paper, I plan to discuss child maltreatment and the effect it could or could not have on one throughout childhood, adolescence years, and adulthood. Also I’m addressing alcoholism, in which child maltreatment could possibly contribute a connection along with factors, such as …

A Place For Organic Farming In The Big Market?, John Cox

Integrated Studies

Farming is as vital to human existence as the air we breathe, and in turn, farming can and does definitely affect the air we breathe. It keeps our planet going and is a worldwide necessity and without farming, the human race would rapidly cease to exist. There is, however, debate regarding if we can continue to exist with the current farming practices found in the majority of farms worldwide and particularly within the United States. Therefore, the need to adapt and/or to control the natural impacts on farming is an ongoing and vitally important endeavor. The primary focus of this …

Abstract

Grief and loss touches the life of every single person during their lifetime, however few are prepared to cope with the effects of their grief and the grief of others. Most literature concerning grief is scholarly and heard to understand and few counselors and clergy are trained in grief work. Terms relating to grief and the grieving process are defined and put into context. The theories and therapies associated with grief and bereavement are …

Hyaluronidase: A Potential New Treatment For Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, C. Leblanc, Robert Stern

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (New York) Publications and Research

Acute respiratory distress syndrome, also known as diffuse alveolar damage, is an acute injury to the lungs. Patients experience severe shortness of breath and require mechanical ventilation. It is not a specific disease, but an acute lung dysfunction associated with a variety of disorders: pneumonia, shock, sepsis, and trauma. A similar lesion occurs in newborn infants, called hyaline disease of the newborn. It occurs in premature babies and has the same pathophysiological mechanism as acute respiratory distress syndrome. Hyaline membranes are a pathologic feature of acute respiratory distress syndrome, consisting of basophilic structures that coat alveolar surfaces. They prevent oxygen …

It Follows: Precarity, Thanatopolitics, And The Ambient Horror Film, Casey Ryan Kelly Jan 2017

It Follows: Precarity, Thanatopolitics, And The Ambient Horror Film, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In the 2014 horror film It Follows, a teenage woman is terrorized by a fatal curse that passes from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. The subject of the curse is relentlessly pursued by vacant-minded assassins that take the form of friends, loved ones, and strangers. The film is set near the infamous dividing line of Detroit’s 8 Mile Road, between what remains of the suburban working-class and the sacrifice zone of post-industrial urban triage. I argue that It Follows confronts audiences with the spectral manifestation of precarity: the deliberate and unequal redistribution of human fragility to populations who …
