Opposing Functions Of Microglial And Macrophagic Tnfr2 In The Pathogenesis Of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Han Gao
Open Access Dissertations
In multiple sclerosis (MS), soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is detrimental via activation of TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1), whereas transmembrane TNF is beneficial primarily by activating TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2). Here we investigate the role of TNFR2 in microglia and monocytes/macrophages in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a model of MS, by cell-specific gene targeting. We show that TNFR2 ablation in microglia leads to early onset of EAE with increased leukocyte infiltration, T cell activation, and demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS). Conversely, TNFR2 ablation in monocytes/macrophages results in EAE suppression with impaired peripheral T cell activation, and reduced CNS …

Effects Of Pentachlorophenol And Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane On Secretion Of Interferon Gamma (Ifnγ) And Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (Tnfα) From Human Immune Cells, Reda Massawe, Leon Drabo, Margaret Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) are pesticides that have been widely used and significantly contaminate the environment. Both are found in human blood and have been shown to alter the lytic and binding function of human natural killer (NK) cells. Interferon gamma (IFNγ) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) are pro-inflammatory cytokines, which regulate immune responsiveness to pathogens and tumors. Their levels require very tight control to prevent loss of immune competence or excessive inflammation. Here, we examined the capacity of PCP and DDT to alter the secretion of these critical pro-inflammatory cytokines from increasingly reconstituted (more complex) preparations of …
Evolution Of Floral Zygomorphy In Androecium And Corolla In Solanaceae, Jingbo Zhang, Peter Stevens, Wenheng Zhang
Evolution Of Floral Zygomorphy In Androecium And Corolla In Solanaceae, Jingbo Zhang, Peter Stevens, Wenheng Zhang
Biology Department Faculty Works
In Solanaceae, a group dominated by actinomorphic‐flowered species, floral zygomorphy is frequently observed among the early‐branching clades. Morphological studies indicated that a zygomorphic androecium is much more common than a zygomorphic corolla in the family. Ontogenic studies suggested the evolution of floral zygomorphy in these two whorls is independent. Here, we have examined the evolution of floral symmetry in the androecium and corolla in Solanaceae. The character states of floral symmetry were assembled for androecium and corolla separately, and ancestral state reconstructions were carried out at both the genus and species levels for Solanaceae and its outgroups. Correlation tests were …

Is It Worth It?: A Review Of The Current Diagnostic Tools And Understandings Of Athletes Suffering With Cte, Melody O'Hara
Biomedical Sciences Undergraduate Research
Increased media coverage on the potential risk of full-contact sports related concussions leading to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) has led to a proactive response within the scientific community. Scientists are in search of a way to diagnose and prevent the spread of this neurodegenerative disease. In the past, diagnosis of CTE was primarily confirmed by an extensive autopsy of the brain with a considerable amount of tau protein being a strong indicator of CTE. Finding new biomarker imaging tools to assess an individual's brain prior to death is greatly needed. In the past few years, newly developed tau protein probes …

Factors Affecting Snowy Plover Chick Survival In A Managed Population, Stephen J. Dinsmore, Eleanor P. Gaines, Scott F. Pearson, David J. Lauten, Kathleen J. Castelein
Institute for Natural Resources Publications
Understanding survival of precocial chicks in the period immediately following hatching has important conservation implications because population growth is often sensitive to post-hatching survival. We studied federally threatened Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus nivosus) broods at the northern limit of their range in coastal Oregon (n ¼ 1,157) and Washington (n ¼ 84) from 1991 to 2011 in an attempt to understand seasonal, annual, and spatial patterns of chick survival. In Oregon, plover chick survival increased with age, varied between sites, and was greater at sites with predator management. The mean probability of surviving from hatch to fledging at 28 …

Identifying endophenotypes of schizophrenia is of critical importance and has profound implications on clinical practice. Here we propose an innovative approach to clarify the mechanims through which temperament and character deviance relates to risk for schizophrenia and predict long-term treatment outcomes. We recruited 61 antipsychotic naïve subjects with chronic schizophrenia, 99 unaffected relatives, and 68 healthy controls from rural communities in the Central Andes. Diagnosis was ascertained with the Schedules of Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry; parkinsonian motor impairment was measured with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale; mesencephalic parenchyma was evaluated with transcranial ultrasound; and personality traits were assessed using …
Investigation On The Structural Variation Of Self-Assembled Lipid Bicellar Mixtures Upon Environmental Stimuli And Addition Of Pegylated Compounds, Ying Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
Bilayered mixed micelle, known as “bicelle”, has been extensively used as the biological membrane models in deciphering membrane-associated proteins. The bicellar mixtures normally constitute of long-chain and short-chain phospholipids in aqueous solutions. Disc-like morphology has been assumed for such mixtures where a bilayer fragment of long-chain phospholipids is sequestered by short-chain lipids at the rim.
Recently, other structures such as vesicles, elongated micelles, and lamellae have also been found in bicelles as temperature, concentration, and salinity vary.
The nano-sized bicellar discs (nanodiscs) and vesicles have great potential to be used as ingredient carriers for imaging and therapy. The research motivation …

Rates Of Performance Loss And Neuromuscular Activity In Men And Women During Cycling: Evidence For A Common Metabolic Basis Of Muscle Fatigue, Christopher W. Sundberg, Sandra K. Hunter, Matthew W. Bundle
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
The durations that muscular force and power outputs can be sustained until failure fall predictably on an exponential decline between an individual’s 3-s burst maximum to the maximum performance they can sustain aerobically. The exponential time constants describing these rates of performance loss are similar across individuals, suggesting that a common metabolically based mechanism governs muscle fatigue; however, these conclusions come from studies mainly on men. To test whether the same physiological understanding can be applied to women, we compared the performance-duration relationships and neuromuscular activity between seven men [23.3 ± 1.9 (SD) yr] and seven women (21.7 ± 1.8 …

Stepchildren’S Communicative And Emotional Journey From Divorce To Remarriage: Predictors Of Stepfamily Satisfaction, Sandra Metts, Paul Schrodt, Dawn O. Braithwaite
Stepchildren’S Communicative And Emotional Journey From Divorce To Remarriage: Predictors Of Stepfamily Satisfaction, Sandra Metts, Paul Schrodt, Dawn O. Braithwaite
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This study explores the emotional and communicative profiles of young adults who have experienced a parental divorce and the emergence of a stepfamily to better understand influences on stepfamily satisfaction. Results of regression analyses indicate that strong negative emotions experienced at the time of the divorce are a negative predictor of current stepfamily satisfaction, even after controlling for age at the time of the divorce. In addition, level of open self-disclosure to a stepparent, although not parents, is a positive predictor of current stepfamily satisfaction. Finally, the extent to which the father has now fully explained the circumstances of the …
Cognitive Sociology, Michael W. Raphael
Cognitive Sociology, Michael W. Raphael
Publications and Research
Cognitive sociology is the study of the conditions under which meaning is constituted through processes of reification. Cognitive sociology traces its origins to writings in the sociology of knowledge, sociology of culture, cognitive and cultural anthropology, and more recently, work done in cultural sociology and cognitive science. Its central questions revolve around locating these processes of reification since the locus of cognition is highly contentious. Researchers consider how individuality is related to notions of society (structures, institutions, systems, etc.) and notions of culture (cultural forms, cultural structures, sub-cultures, etc.). These questions further explore how these answers depend on learning processes …

The prepared catalysts are magnetic as in case of iron and cobalt oxides …
Effects Of Three Road Ice Fighters On Caddisfly Survival, Cata Wedman
Effects Of Three Road Ice Fighters On Caddisfly Survival, Cata Wedman
JCCC Honors Journal
Since salt and other toxins have affected larvae in other studies, we hypothesized that the samples with table salt, MgCl brine, or beet juice brine will have a lower LT50 than the control group. We also hypothesized the larvae would have the highest mortality in salt and the lowest mortality in beet juice brine. The null hypothesis will be that table salt, beet juice brine, and MgCl samples won’t differ on the control’s group LT50.
An Historical Analysis Of Lab Techniques As Applies To Current Glial Cell Research, Nathan Ostermann
An Historical Analysis Of Lab Techniques As Applies To Current Glial Cell Research, Nathan Ostermann
JCCC Honors Journal
The primary focus of neurology, since the beginning, has been the neuron. This is understandable, neuronal networks and nerves being the main communication mechanism between the brain and the rest of the body. However, this focus on neurons has overshadowed and delayed research on the other cells in the brain. Glial cells, or neuroglia, are defined as all cells in the brain that are not electrically excitable neurons or vascular cells. This definition of glial cells introduced by Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow in 1858. Until relatively recently, the idea that glial cells are simply passive elements of the brain that …

Petrographical And Geochemical Changes In Bosnian Stalagmites And Their Palaeo-Environmental Significance, Veronica Chiarini, Isabelle Couchoud, Russell Drysdale, Petra Bajo, Simone Milanolo, Silvia Frisia, Alan Greig, John Hellstrom, Jo De Waele
International Journal of Speleology
Detailed petrographic observations have been coupled with trace element and δ13C - δ18O analyses in order to investigate their dynamics in two Holocene Bosnian speleothems. The potential of this multiproxy approach in providing a means to extract palaeo-environmental information from stalagmites whose stable isotope signals are noisy and without obvious trends has been tested. The studied stalagmites are mostly characterized by columnar microcrystalline fabric. At the sub-millimetre scale of lamination, different microcrystalline columnar sub-types (open and closed) have been detected and classified on the basis of the observed porosity and the crystallite size. The presence of …
Human-Nonhuman Chimeras, Ontology, And Dignity: A Constructivist Approach To The Ethics Of Conducting Research On Cross-Species Hybrids, Jonathan M. Vajda
Human-Nonhuman Chimeras, Ontology, And Dignity: A Constructivist Approach To The Ethics Of Conducting Research On Cross-Species Hybrids, Jonathan M. Vajda
The Hilltop Review
Developments in biological technology in the last few decades highlight the surprising and ever-expanding practical benefits of stem cells. With this progress, the possibility of combining human and nonhuman organisms is a reality, with ethical boundaries that are not readily obvious. These inter-species hybrids are of a larger class of biological entities called “chimeras.” As the concept of a human-nonhuman creature is conjured in our minds, either incredulous wonder or grotesque horror is likely to follow. This paper seeks to mitigate those worries and demotivate reasonable concerns raised against chimera research, all the while pressing current ethical positions toward their …
Disciplinary Differences In Out-Of-School High School Science Experiences And Influence On Students’ Engineering Choices, Allison Godwin, Gerhard Sonnert, Philip M. Sadler
Disciplinary Differences In Out-Of-School High School Science Experiences And Influence On Students’ Engineering Choices, Allison Godwin, Gerhard Sonnert, Philip M. Sadler
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Participation from a variety of students is important to the long-term growth of the engineering field. Much of the research on engineering recruitment or career choice has focused on engineering as a whole, even though engineering disciplines are varied in student participation and focus. This work examines how students’ out-of-school interests and experiences in high school predict the likelihood of choosing a career in a particular engineering discipline. Out-of-school experiences offer more unstructured ways for students to meaningfully engage with science and engineering outside of the confines of the classroom. These experiences offer opportunities to spark particular science interests not …

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications
Background: Colletotrichum graminicola and C. sublineola cause anthracnose leaf and stalk diseases of maize and sorghum, respectively. In spite of their close evolutionary relationship, the two species are completely host-specific. Host specificity is often attributed to pathogen virulence factors, including specialized secondary metabolites (SSM), and small-secreted protein (SSP) effectors. Genes relevant to these categories were manually annotated in two co-occurring, contemporaneous strains of C. graminicola and C. sublineola. A comparative genomic and phylogenetic analysis was performed to address the evolutionary relationships among these and other divergent gene families in the two strains.
Results: Inoculation of maize with C. sublineola …
