Life Course Health Development Outcomes After Prematurity: Developing A Community, Clinical, And Translational Research Agenda To Optimize Health, Behavior, And Functioning, Michael E. Msall, Sarah A. Sobotka, Amelia Dmowska, Dennis Hogan, Mary Sullivan

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Long-term survival for infants born extremely prematurely (gestation) and extremely low birth weight (<1000 >g) has increased dramatically due to obstetrical and neonatal advances. However, poverty, inequality, and resulting health disparities are significant contributors to women who give birth to preterm infants and also impact their children’s healthy development and education. While the vast majority of survivors of extreme prematurity do not have the most severe forms of neurodevelopmental disability (i.e., cerebral palsy, blindness, sensorineural hearing loss >55 dB, and intellectual disability), half of survivors can be expected to require special education services at kindergarten entry and during their school …

Gender Differences In Drinking Habits Among College Students, Margaret Anne Demayo Jan 2017

Gender Differences In Drinking Habits Among College Students, Margaret Anne Demayo

Student Research Posters

Binge drinking is a common problem found among college students. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in six U.S. adults binge drink about four times a month, consuming about eight drinks per binge." Over time, binge drinking in college can cause negative factors for students such as, poor academics and health problems.

The purpose of my study is to evaluate how stress factors such as environment and peer relationships affect drinking habits in male and female college students. Students experience stress factors such as environment (e.g. housing), peer relationships (e.g. peer pressure, relationships), school (e.g. …

Positivity And Delinquency: Is The Glass Half Full?, Alexis J. Harper Jan 2017

Positivity And Delinquency: Is The Glass Half Full?, Alexis J. Harper

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

Research from control theorist Walter Reckless has shown that positive self-image acts as an insulator from delinquency during adolescence. Current research investigates the connection between an individual’s self-perceptions and their inclination toward delinquency, hypothesizing that rates of delinquency will be lesser for an individual with a positive perception of self. Data from Wave I of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health are compared to follow-up data with participants in Wave II so reported self-image may predict subsequent delinquency. Ordered logistic regression is used to estimate the significance of self-image effects on delinquency, and probability scores for participation in delinquency …

Black And Poor: The Grave Consequences Of Utah V. Strieff, Chanae L. Wood Jan 2017

Black And Poor: The Grave Consequences Of Utah V. Strieff, Chanae L. Wood

St. Thomas Law Review

This Comment brings reconciliation between the majority and minority opinions in Strieff by proposing a solution that will uphold Fourth Amendment rights and public safety. Part II explores the Fourth Amendment by tracing the origins of the exclusionary rule, and then discusses the Court's first step in undermining constitutional rights in Terry v. Ohio. Part III discusses the Court's trend of weakening Fourth Amendment rights and provides an in-depth analysis of the impact its most recent Fourth Amendment ruling, Strieff will have on Blacks and lower socioeconomic citizens. Part IV provides a comprehensive solution, suggesting a warrant hierarchy system that …

A Right Without A Remedy: Time Runs Out Before The Right To File Accrues For Successive Habeas Corpus Petitioners, Agnieszka Chiapperini Jan 2017

A Right Without A Remedy: Time Runs Out Before The Right To File Accrues For Successive Habeas Corpus Petitioners, Agnieszka Chiapperini

St. Thomas Law Review

"An inscription on the walls of the Department of Justice states the proposition candidly for the federal domain: 'The United States wins its point whenever justice is done its citizens in the courts."" The importance that finality of convictions has on our society comes only second to ensuring that those who were convicted and sentenced were treated fairly. The availability of post-conviction relief to prisoners is a vital function of our criminal justice system, not as a means of "loopholes" criminals can use to be set free, but to ensure that all of our citizens are treated justly and within …

Why Our Financial Literacy Programming Died (And How Yours Can Succeed), Wendy C. Doucette Jan 2017

Why Our Financial Literacy Programming Died (And How Yours Can Succeed), Wendy C. Doucette

ETSU Faculty Works

This is the story of a financial literacy endeavor that sputtered, surged, and then died. While it did not succeed at my institution, I share the story and the resources in the hope that its successes and failures might be of use to others.

Although I had already been a professional librarian for seven years when I took my new position as Graduate Research and Instruction Librarian at East Tennessee State University near the beginning of fall semester 2014, I had never worked in public services. Fortunately, I had been a teacher, received professional training in pedagogy, and was comfortable …

Subconstitutional Checks, Shima Baradaran Baughman Jan 2017

Subconstitutional Checks, Shima Baradaran Baughman

Notre Dame Law Review

Constitutional checks are an important part of the American justice system. The Constitution demands structural checks where it provides commensurate power. The Constitution includes several explicit checks in criminal law. Criminal defendants have rights to counsel, indictment by grand jury, and trial by jury; the public or executive elects or appoints prosecutors; legislatures limit actions of police and prosecutors; and courts enforce individual constitutional rights and stop executive misconduct. However, these checks have rarely functioned as intended because the Constitution and criminal law have failed to create—what I call—“subconstitutional checks” to adapt to the changes of the modern criminal state. …

The Criminalization Of Compliance, Todd Haugh Jan 2017

The Criminalization Of Compliance, Todd Haugh

Notre Dame Law Review

Corporate compliance is becoming increasingly “criminalized.” What began as a means of industry self-regulation has morphed into a multi-billion-dollar effort to avoid government intervention in business, specifically criminal and quasi-criminal investigations and prosecutions. In order to avoid application of the criminal law, companies have adopted compliance programs that are motivated by and mimic that law, using the precepts of criminal legislation, enforcement, and adjudication to advance their compliance goals. This approach to compliance is inherently flawed, however—it can never be fully effective in abating corporate wrongdoing. Criminalized compliance regimes are inherently ineffective because they impose unintended behavioral consequences on corporate …

“Everything Is At Stake If Norway Is Sentenced. In That Case, We Have Failed”: Solitary Confinement And The “Hard” Cases In The United States And Norway, Laura L. Rovner

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

While the harms caused by solitary confinement and its overuse in American prisons have gained increased recognition over the last decade, most states and the federal government maintain that extensive solitary confinement is both necessary and appropriate for those people deemed “the worst of the worst.” As a result, many of those who have been so labeled have languished in solitary confinement for years or even decades. With limited exceptions, they are there with the blessing of the federal courts, which have generally held that even very lengthy periods of solitary confinement do not violate the Eighth Amendment’s Cruel and …
