How Do I Fit? Understanding Barriers And Facilitators To Social Services Among Women Involved In Commercial Sexual Exploitation Through Identities, Traumas, And Substance Use, Lara B. Gerassi
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation can lead to devastating health and mental health consequences for women, such as elevated rates of substance use, trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression, as well as sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Consequently, access to and engagement with services that address addiction, mental health, housing, and provide general advocacy are critically important to women's increased safety, stabilization, and quality of life. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to 1) understand self-identities (with regard to sex trading) and the role of substance use among women involved in CSE and 2) identify perceived barriers …

No Father Left Behind: Exploring Positive Father Involvement As A Protective Factor In The Prevention Of Neglect And Promotion Of Child Well-Being, Ericka M. Lewis
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Despite the growing evidence highlighting the relationship between positive father behaviors and child development, fathers still receive less research attention than mothers. As a result, little is known about the direct effects of positive father involvement on child neglect risk and child well-being. This dissertation study used data from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) and applied longitudinal structural equation modeling to examine the role of father involvement in the reduction of neglect risk and adverse child outcomes among low-income families. The specific aims guiding this dissertation study are (1) to test the direct and indirect relationships …
Always Loved But Never Entitled: Professor Intentions To Promote Leadership In Women, Daniel R. Conn, Roslyn J.F. Billy
Always Loved But Never Entitled: Professor Intentions To Promote Leadership In Women, Daniel R. Conn, Roslyn J.F. Billy
The Qualitative Report
This article focuses on three professors from Midwestern University and how their intentions to encourage women to see themselves as leaders play out in their respective classrooms. Through educational connoisseurship and criticism we describe and interpret the ecological impacts of professor intentions in promoting women as leaders. To this end, we find the professors realize these intentions by the way in which they care for their students. In caring for their students, the professors take an “always loved by never entitled” approach, where they balance building a sense of support and confidence among their students with an understanding that leaders …

Abstract
This dissertation explores the experiences and knowledge of six classroom teachers who engaged in teaching practices that sought to transform the educational experiences of students in urban public schools. The study examined the educators’ life histories and experiences in traditional teacher preparation programs. The goal of this research was to investigate the way teachers’ life histories, including early educational experiences in K-12 schooling and teacher preparation within traditional and historically white institutions, inform their approaches to teaching and enacting activist literacies. For the purpose of this study, I define activist literacies as thinking, understanding, and acting with deliberate intention. …

Damned Lies & Criminal Sentencing Using Evidence-Based Tools, John Lightbourne
Duke Law & Technology Review
The boom of big data and predictive analytics has revolutionized business. eHarmony matches customers based on shared likes and expectations for romance, and Target uses similar methods to strategically push its products on shoppers. Courts and Departments of Corrections have also sought to employ similar tools. However, the use of data analytics in sentencing raises a host of constitutional concerns. In State v. Loomis, the Wisconsin Supreme Court was faced with whether the use of an actuarial risk assessment tool based on a proprietary formula violates a defendant’s right to due process where the defendant could not review how the …

Incorporating Service Learners In Community Engaged Research: Experiential Application Of Social Science Perspectives And Research Methods, Christine Marston, Kyle Ann Nelson
Incorporating Service Learners In Community Engaged Research: Experiential Application Of Social Science Perspectives And Research Methods, Christine Marston, Kyle Ann Nelson
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Community engaged scholarship and service learning pedagogy are increasing trends in higher education (Reardon, 1998; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; Campus Compact, 2013a; Fuller, 2013) and yield synergistic value to the three-pronged mission of higher education of teaching, service and research (Boyer, 1990; Furco, 2010; Stanton, 2012; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; CCEC, 2013). Engaged social science faculty offer meaningful contributions to the community and their work serves to enhance university-community partnerships (Stanton, 2007; Furco, 2010; Klein et al., 2012). Students participating in service learning in these fields can “acquire first-hand knowledge” as well as develop social science skills and perspectives through …
Lesbians & Gays: Attitudes Among U.S. Latino College Populations, Aileen Terrazas
Lesbians & Gays: Attitudes Among U.S. Latino College Populations, Aileen Terrazas
Theses and Dissertations
Negative attitudes towards homosexuals in the United States amongst Latino populations have been associated with cultural factors such as machismo and marianismo, as well as acculturation, ethnic identity and religious involvement (Diaz, Ayala, Bein, Henne & Marin 2001; Herek & Gonzalez-Rivera, 2006; Harris, 2009). Studies have indicated that the stronger the beliefs in traditional norms, religious affiliation and low levels of acculturation an individual has the more likely that they are to have negative attitudes towards individuals who identify as lesbian and gay (Ahrold & Meston, 2010). The following study aims to analyze the impact that acculturation, ethnic identity, traditional …

Exploring The Relationship Between Athletic Identity And Career Maturity Among High Profile Student Athletes In Revenue Producing Sports Attending A Division Ii Institution, Renida S. Clark
Masters Theses
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and career maturity of high profile male athletes at a Division II institution in the Midwest. The study was guided by Donald E. Super’s (1957) career development theory. Participants were high profile male student athletes, who were currently enrolled at the institution and played a revenue producing sport (narrowly defined as men’s football and basketball). Semi-structured interviews were conducted that prompted participants to describe their experiences as high profile student athletes and how those experiences contributed to their athletic identity and career maturity. Administering Suspect Classes, Bertrall L. Ross Ii
Administering Suspect Classes, Bertrall L. Ross Ii
Duke Law Journal
It has been over forty years since the Supreme Court declared a class suspect under the Equal Protection Clause. In that time, the Court has denied suspect-class status—and the special judicial protections associated with it—to the elderly, the disabled, and the poor, and it has avoided suspect-class determinations when addressing laws that discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community. Administrative agencies, however, have stepped in to provide marginalized groups with some protections through their interpretation of civil rights laws. The Court has shown hostility to those agency interpretations, often in opaque decisions that seem to rest on principles of judicial …

An Administrative Right To Be Free From Sexual Violence? Title Ix Enforcement In Historical And Institutional Perspective, Karen M. Tani
An Administrative Right To Be Free From Sexual Violence? Title Ix Enforcement In Historical And Institutional Perspective, Karen M. Tani
Duke Law Journal
One of the most controversial administrative actions in recent years is the U.S. Department of Education’s campaign against sexual assault on college campuses. Using its authority under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (mandating nondiscrimination on the basis of sex in all educational programs and activities receiving federal funds), the Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has launched an enforcement effort that critics denounce as aggressive, manipulative, and corrosive of individual liberties. Missing from the commentary is a historically informed understanding of why this administrative campaign unfolded as it did. This Article offers crucial context by reminding readers …
