The Asymmetry Of Crimes By And Against Police Officers, Monu Bedi
The Asymmetry Of Crimes By And Against Police Officers, Monu Bedi
Duke Law Journal Online
Crimes by and against police officers during the performance of their duties are treated differently. If a police officer unlawfully harms a citizen, regular assault or homicide charges apply, whereas if a citizen unlawfully harms a police officer, aggravated assault or homicide charges apply. The enhancement stems from the fact that the citizen interfered with police activity. No one would dispute that states have a special interest in protecting this kind of important state-sanctioned behavior. But do they not also have an equal interest in deterring its abuse through commensurate charges?
This Essay is the first to tackle this asymmetry …

Youth Who Commit Sexual Offenses: Tensions Between Public Perception, Legislative Barriers, And Research Findings, Jesse Turner
Youth Who Commit Sexual Offenses: Tensions Between Public Perception, Legislative Barriers, And Research Findings, Jesse Turner
University Honors Theses
The juvenile justice system was founded on the beliefs that youth were inherently different from adults, both in the crimes they committed and how they were treated within society, and thus deserved to be punished differently. The court's job was to act as a sort of parent and always in the best interest of the child. Within this empathetic system, there has always been a fundamental misunderstanding of youth who commit sexual offenses and today those misunderstandings are incredibly detrimental to adjudicated youth and society at large. We believe that these youth are dangerous predators, that they will continue to …

An Analysis Of Oregon Youth Authority Populations: Who Receives Treatment And What Factors Influence Allocation Of Treatment Resources?, Rebecca Arredondo Yazzie
Dissertations and Theses
Service provision in both adult and juvenile correctional settings is an understudied phenomenon. Research has evaluated the use of evidence-based practices (EBP) in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse among adults and juveniles. Young, Farrell, Henderson and Taxman (2009) highlight the role of organizational factors including climate and culture, opportunities for staff training, resources, administrator attitudes and interagency collaboration in the application of EBP in correctional settings. The Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) aims to provide services to youth under the guise of EBP. Literature in the field of juvenile justice is limited in scope in areas of organizational …

The study evaluates training at a collegiate flight training program providing metrics for time and costs from zero time to a Private Pilot. Training times for flights and activities are pulled from a sophisticated database used at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and matched with flight and ground school lessons and then further subdivided to determine the amount of time spent training in areas of operation that are prescribed by the Federal Aviation Administration in the published Practical Test Standards and Airman Certification Standards for those seeking pilot licenses and ratings. Provided are mean times and costs for a prospective pilot …

Discrimination And Health: Sleep And Racism-Related Vigilance In Wave 5 Of Americans' Changing Lives Study, Jennifer Werekeitzen
Discrimination And Health: Sleep And Racism-Related Vigilance In Wave 5 Of Americans' Changing Lives Study, Jennifer Werekeitzen
University Honors Theses
The present study focuses on racial discrimination, sleep, and vigilance from Wave 5 of the Americans' Changing Lives study. From previous literature we know that stress and sleep are related; the more stress present, the more sleeping problems. It follows then that if anticipation of discrimination (vigilance) is the manifestation of stress related to racism, then vigilant individuals will have a harder time sleeping. Our hypothesis is that Black Americans’ vigilance levels will be negatively correlated with their sleep quality such that lower vigilance levels will indicate higher sleep quality. The results supported our hypothesis suggesting that Black Americans who …

Letter To The President: Longitudinal Critical Discourse Analysis Of Academic And Hip Hop Genres In A Rap Narrative Program, Debangshu Roygardner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The objective of this study was to examine an in-school rap narrative workshop through critical discourse theory (Bamberg, 2012; Daiute, 2014). Twelve youth from a public school serving youth in urban Houston, TX were recruited from an in-school and after-school Hip hop/Rap narrative program to participate in a two-year cohort research study. The primary research question guiding the study was “How do young people participating in a school-based Hip hop/Rap program use a wide range of narrative genres for literacy and psycho-social development over two years in the program?”
The data-intensive study involved assessments of literacy and psycho-social development via …
Seaport Vulnerability To Criminal Networks: A Mixed Method Approach To Measuring Criminological Vulnerability In The Top 30 U.S. Container Ports, Leonid Lantsman
Seaport Vulnerability To Criminal Networks: A Mixed Method Approach To Measuring Criminological Vulnerability In The Top 30 U.S. Container Ports, Leonid Lantsman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Seaports form a unique space for criminological examination. As the locus points for the majority of international and domestic trade criminal network access to a port can provide outsized benefits. While ports are physical spaces they are underlined by complex systems incorporating public and private agencies, companies and small entities. Underlying the administrative and logistical activity at the port is a jurisdictional web of public and private security regulatory agencies. The complexity of the environment creates vulnerabilities that criminal networks can use to gain access to ports. This dissertation developed a Seaport Vulnerability Framework (SVF), developed from the rational choice …
Diplomas Vs Incarceration: Does Intersectionality Affect Black Men And Women Differently?, Chelsie Burchett
Diplomas Vs Incarceration: Does Intersectionality Affect Black Men And Women Differently?, Chelsie Burchett
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Racial minorities are disproportionately imprisoned or sent to jail for reasons including racial profiling, unfair drug laws, and a biased judicial system. Black men are often subject to unwarranted searches and stop-and-frisks. These are meant to protect neighborhoods from criminal activity, when in fact they are often used to target people of color in destitute neighborhoods. Some scholars argue that a lot of differential treatment towards Black men stems from automatic thought processes, or implicit biases on the part of law enforcement officers. These are seen as unconscious and instilled by societal stigmas, rather than the result of careful deliberations. …
The Advanced Spectroscopic Analysis Of Organic Gunshot Residue And Explosives, Jennifer M. Leonard
The Advanced Spectroscopic Analysis Of Organic Gunshot Residue And Explosives, Jennifer M. Leonard
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
With the prevalence of shooting cases and terrorist attacks/or threats that plague the current state of the criminal justice system, it is of paramount importance to be able to detect, identify and interpret the presence of gunshot residue or explosives material. This concern is seen in law enforcement agencies and the media throughout the United States and abroad.
Currently, the typical method of analyzing gunshot residue in most crime laboratories serves to identify the inorganic constituents of the primer residue, namely lead, barium and antimony. However, it is possible that the organic matter from the propellant could provide different information …
Investigating The Risk Factors Of Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Among Korean Immigrant Women In America, Chunrye Kim
Investigating The Risk Factors Of Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Among Korean Immigrant Women In America, Chunrye Kim
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Objective: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious social problem. Due to the underutilization of public and private human and social services due to language barriers, their illegal status, and stigma associated with violence, both victims and offenders of intimate partner violence are rarely captured by either the criminal justice system or public health radar screens (Hicks & Li, 2003). Also, the “model minority myth” has led to the underestimation of the risk of violence against women among Asian immigrants and thus leads to an underinvestment of research and service resources for this vulnerable population (Leong & Lau, 2001; Rhee, …
The Socioemotional Impact Of Disparate Student Discipline: An Examination Of Racial Bias And Out-Of-School Suspensions, Amelia Barbadoro
The Socioemotional Impact Of Disparate Student Discipline: An Examination Of Racial Bias And Out-Of-School Suspensions, Amelia Barbadoro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Most schools find it challenging to effectively manage disruptive student conduct such as violent outbursts, antisocial behavior, bullying, talking back, and truancy. One management tool utilized by teachers and administrators attempting to quell unruly behavior is exclusion through the use of suspension. Out-of-school suspension rates within the United States have been rising since the 1970’s, with a dramatic increase evident after 2002, with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act. The higher use of out-of-school suspensions reflects the growth of zero tolerance policies which mandate predetermined, typically harsh consequences or punishments (such as suspension and expulsion) for a …
Automatically Guilty: Associations Between Evidence And Guilt, William E. Crozier Iv
Automatically Guilty: Associations Between Evidence And Guilt, William E. Crozier Iv
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Both real-life cases and laboratory research demonstrate that confession evidence is very convincing—even when it should not be. Could this be due to an automatic association between a confession and guilt? We tested this possibility using a Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) list, which measures automatic associations by presenting participants with a list of words that are thematically related but, importantly, lack the word describing the theme (“critical lure”). When the association between the list words and the theme is sufficiently strong, participants incorrectly report seeing the critical lure. We hypothesized that participants would show more false recall for seeing “guilty” on a …
Procedural Justice For Youth: Discrepancies In The Provision Of Defense Counsel For Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Emily K. Pelletier
Procedural Justice For Youth: Discrepancies In The Provision Of Defense Counsel For Youth In The Juvenile Justice System, Emily K. Pelletier
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Youth in the juvenile justice system experience racially disparate outcomes at all contact points throughout the system process, despite race-neutral state policies governing the juvenile justice system. States provide defense counsel for indigent youth in the juvenile justice system through policies containing race-neutral language; however, each state maintains different policies protecting youth rights to defense counsel. This study questions the relationships among state policies protecting youth rights to defense counsel, racially disparate outcomes for youth in the juvenile justice system, and state socioeconomic and racial composition. The study relies on content analysis to transform qualitative state policies into quantitative data …
Narrating School, Narrative Self: Identity, Agency And The Hidden Curriculum Of (Hetero)Normativity, Mikela Bjork
Narrating School, Narrative Self: Identity, Agency And The Hidden Curriculum Of (Hetero)Normativity, Mikela Bjork
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation analyzes sober women’s narratives of their schooling experiences to reflect on how educators and policy makers can improve the schooling experiences for othered students.. Inspired by the self-reflective and agentic pedagogy found within the figured world of Alcoholics Anonymous, I focused on the narratives of women in Alcoholics Anonymous, ages 18-85, as they narrated their schooling stories from pre-Kindergarten up to the last grade they completed. What the data of this qualitative research project reveals is that, despite the detrimental culture of denial at home and school, the participants, through the radical act of self-reflexivity and personal narrative, …

Students And Work Experience Programmes, Marion Brown
Students And Work Experience Programmes, Marion Brown
The ITB Journal
Students are often reluctant to become involved in work experience programmes, preferring instead to devote their time to further study or, to work in (often) non- related paid employment. Many students may think that having a degree is a tremendous asset and, is the only requirement needed to successfully secure employment in their chosen field. This article will discuss the advantages of work experience and provide a concrete example of one programme attended by third year students as part of the Special Populations module of Sports Management and Coaching Course. ITB, in a unique partnership with Fingal County Council Sports …
Community Education And The Labour Activation Challenge, Liam Mcglynn
Community Education And The Labour Activation Challenge, Liam Mcglynn
The ITB Journal
In the aftermath of the global economic crisis of 2008 and the subsequent recession in Ireland and indeed across Europe, public discourse in politics, society, academia and media has focused on explaining the crisis as well as looking for solutions to the crisis. In the context of the Irish recession now in its fifth year, with unemployment at 13.6% or 435,357 (Central Statistics Office, 2013) there is understandable urgency across all sectors to find ways out of the crisis. It is against this backdrop of Ireland’s fall from the dizzying heights of the celtic tiger years to the depths of …

Assessing Intercultural Competence In Experiential Learning Abroad: Lessons For Educators, Andrea Paras, Lynne Mitchell
Assessing Intercultural Competence In Experiential Learning Abroad: Lessons For Educators, Andrea Paras, Lynne Mitchell
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
The old adage that travel broadens the mind may not hold true for every student studying abroad. While pre-departure and in-country support for intercultural learning can help, some students still fail to develop their intercultural competence and some even go backwards. Using a combination of quantitative (Intercultural Development Inventory) and qualitative measures, this study examines what happens in intercultural learning when students participated in a four-week experiential field school in India, preceded by a twelve-week preparation course on the ethics of international voluntourism. Results found that, while students’ pre- and post-trip Intercultural Development Inventory results varied, qualitative data gave insights …
