Public Sociology, Laura Nichols Aug 2017

Public Sociology, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Public sociology refers to the application and uses of sociology beyond the academy. The term has been used very broadly to describe any sociological theory, methods, research findings, or commentary by sociologists that are consumed (and, ideally, used) by non-sociologists. Its central aim is "to correct - that is, to make better, social conditions for the betterment of humanity" (Hanemaayer and Schneider 2014: 5). Public sociology has also been referred to more specifically as an approach sociologists use to participate in public discussions about social issues as "public intellectuals" (Burawoy 2005).

This chapter focuses on public sociology in its broadest …

Gender Identity And Sense Of Self Sufficiency, Nicole Collin Aug 2017

Gender Identity And Sense Of Self Sufficiency, Nicole Collin

Perspectives

This study examines the effects of gender identity on sense of safety on a college campus. Data was collected through an online survey sent out to students at the University of New Hampshire. Students answered nominal and ordinal questions about their gender identity, as well as Likert-scale questions regarding opinions on safety while walking on campus. The results of the survey showed correlation between gender identity and sense of safety while walking alone at night, however, the survey showed no correlation between gender identity and sense of safety while walking at night with a friend. Collecting data from a larger …

Describing And Quantifying How Previously Unsubmitted Saks Advanced From Testing To Disposition On The Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force, Rachel Lovell, Daniel Flannery Aug 2017

Describing And Quantifying How Previously Unsubmitted Saks Advanced From Testing To Disposition On The Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force, Rachel Lovell, Daniel Flannery

Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs

In this research brief, we detail the process by which previously unsubmitted SAKs advance through four phases—testing, investigation, prosecution, and disposition—on the Cuyahoga County SAK Task Force (Task Force). We describe the key steps in the process, providing statistics on the number of cases that proceed or fail to proceed as well as the reasons why cases fail to proceed. The purpose of this research brief is to aid other jurisdictions that are processing their previously unsubmitted SAKs in visualizing the processing from testing to disposition, collecting performance measures at each step in the process, and establishing comparable statistics across …

Perceptions Of Why The Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Exists In Cuyahoga County, Ohio And Recommendations For Improving Practice, Rachel Lovell, Misty Luminais, Daniel Flannery Aug 2017

Perceptions Of Why The Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Exists In Cuyahoga County, Ohio And Recommendations For Improving Practice, Rachel Lovell, Misty Luminais, Daniel Flannery

Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs

Previous research has addressed the logistical and structural factors that contributed to the backlog. This research brief approaches this issue from a different perspective—focusing instead on the Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force (Task Force) members’ perceptions of the reasons for the backlog. We detail in the brief perceptions of what created the backlog, which provides an important glimpse into what was not working about the process according to Task Force members. Through their analyses and critiques, we can observe the shifts in culture and practice that have occurred, due in part to the passage of time and larger …

Perceived Influence Of The Ferguson Effect On Law Enforcement Officer Turnover Intentions, William P. Markopoulos Jr Aug 2017

Perceived Influence Of The Ferguson Effect On Law Enforcement Officer Turnover Intentions, William P. Markopoulos Jr

Dissertations

Law enforcement officer turnover lacks the support of empirical research (Monk-Turner, O’Leary, & Sumter, 2010; Wareham, Smith, & Lambert, 2013), despite being costly in terms of both human and monetary capital (Peña, 2013; Reaves, 2012; Wilson & Sheer, 2013). What literature is available describes factors such as job dissatisfaction and monetary issues as reasons to leave an agency (Cyprian, 2009; Hubbard, 2008; McIntyre, 1990). A new phenomenon, known as the “Ferguson Effect” has been examined in terms of community involvement (Nix & Wolfe, 2016; Wolfe & Nix, 2016) and violent crime rates (Rosenfeld, 2015), but there is no research that …

Third Party Reforms In Corrections: A Qualitative Analysis Of Interest Groups’ Effectiveness At Reducing Entropy Using Litigation, James M. A. Pitts Aug 2017

Third Party Reforms In Corrections: A Qualitative Analysis Of Interest Groups’ Effectiveness At Reducing Entropy Using Litigation, James M. A. Pitts

Dissertations

Interest groups have been prevalent in American society for decades. Much of interest groups’ (IGs) influence has been examined by their effect on decision-making. IGs’ ability to affect policy choices is undeniable both legislatively and judicially. Analyses of judicial decision-making generally focus on the use of amicus curiae briefs (ACBs) by IGs. While most analyses of IGs’ influence have been conducted using quantitative methods, few have assessed IGs’ effect on decision-making qualitatively. Although the literature on IGs and decision-making is well established among political scientists, these concepts have been discussed much less among criminologists. The current analysis fill this void …

A Moment Became The Season: An Exploration Of Trauma Narrative Within The Community Development Context, Lydia Berry Aug 2017

A Moment Became The Season: An Exploration Of Trauma Narrative Within The Community Development Context, Lydia Berry

Sustainability and Social Justice

This research explores current methods of psychological trauma intervention within the community development context, namely the understandings that bound the clinical and diagnostic side of trauma, and the more recent victim centered approach: the trauma informed care method. The shortcomings of these approaches is that they individually lack the ability to establish the victim back into their sense of self or community, accordingly. This research argues that a narrative approach, a process by which a survivor of trauma has full agency to express their experience, used in conjunction with existing practices can rectify the shortcomings of both methods. The researcher …

Post-Racial Ideology And Implicit Racial Bias, Elliot Chiang Aug 2017

Post-Racial Ideology And Implicit Racial Bias, Elliot Chiang

Perspectives

This study assesses college students from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and their attitudes and opinions toward people of color, specifically looking at racial/ethnic identity and campus social climate. With 362 respondents from the University of New Hampshire who answered our online survey, it looked at the participants’ post-racial ideologies and the participant’s racial/ethnic identity. This study finds that there is a correlation between racial identity and post-racial beliefs. The study found that 82 percent of the student respondents did not believe that we, as a society, lived in a post-racial America. It was also discovered that the student …

Case Studies Of Women Of Color Leading Community Colleges: Pathways To Reconfigure The Leadership Pipeline, Maria Yareli Delgado

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Using De Anda’s (1984) framework of Bicultural Socialization theory that indicates that individuals from minority groups have to learn to function in two environments, the environment of their own culture and that of the main society culture. This research study present findings from a qualitative study that examined how women of color (African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Native American) navigated the community college pipeline and were able to achieve success by obtaining higher-level administrative positions. Six women of color who held higher ranking administrative positions at a community college district in North Texas shared their experiences, achievements, adversities, and …

Towards An International Right To Claim Innocence, Brandon L. Garrett Aug 2017

Towards An International Right To Claim Innocence, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

In the past, wrongful convictions were seen as a local problem largely undeserving of national or international attention. Very different legal systems have shared a common approach of emphasizing the finality of criminal convictions, thereby making it very difficult to claim innocence by relying on new evidence uncovered post-trial. While international law guarantees a right to a fair trial, a presumption of innocence, and a right to appeal, no international human rights norms clearly obligate countries to allow defendants to meaningfully assert post-trial claims of innocence. Today, the procedures and attitudes toward claims of innocence that rely on newly discovered …

An Introduction To Police Operations And Methods: The Connection To Law And History, R. Alan Thompson, Anne Hudson

Open Textbooks

An Introduction to Police Operations and Methods: The Connection to Law and History textbook provides an overview of the complex and evolving role of police in a modern democratic society. Police officers are expected to respond to the demands of competing constituencies and resolve complex societal and individual problems. The invocation of the formal criminal justice system and the use of force to accomplish lawful objectives is sometimes required. In order to understand how and why the police operate as they do, the history of organized law enforcement is examined. Attention is given to the selection and training of qualified …

Anti-Lgbt Hate Crimes In The Us, Elizabeth Coston Aug 2017

Anti-Lgbt Hate Crimes In The Us, Elizabeth Coston

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation provides a comprehensive and theoretically grounded empirical analysis of anti-LGBT hates crimes utilizing national crime data from the Uniform Crime Report and National Crime Victimization Survey. Current accounts of anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) hate crimes at the national level typically only discuss prevalence or offer descriptive statistics, and more advanced statistical analyses have used small samples and offer conflicting conclusions across studies. This project utilizes advanced regression techniques with national data to examine the factors that contribute to these crimes, which represents a major methodological advance in the study of anti-LGBT hate crimes. First, the role …

Changing Culture Through Sharing Space: A Case Study Of The Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force, Rachel Lovell, Misty Luminais, Daniel Flannery Aug 2017

Changing Culture Through Sharing Space: A Case Study Of The Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force, Rachel Lovell, Misty Luminais, Daniel Flannery

Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs

This brief explores the efficacy of having a shared space for a multidisciplinary team that is responsible for tackling the issue of unsubmitted SAKs in their community. Our research finds that being in close proximity for extended periods of time has many positive outcomes including engendering a cultural shift that can break through disciplinary silos leading to more positive experiences for victims and successful prosecutions. The findings and recommendations detailed in this brief can be applicable to jurisdictions that are currently tackling or beginning to address their jurisdiction’s unsubmitted SAKs, regardless of whether those efforts are currently being funded under …

Local Democracy, Community Adjudication, And Criminal Justice, Laura I. Appleman Aug 2017

Local Democracy, Community Adjudication, And Criminal Justice, Laura I. Appleman

Northwestern University Law Review

Many of our criminal justice woes can be traced to the loss of the community’s decisionmaking ability in adjudicating crime and punishment. American normative theories of democracy and democratic deliberation have always included the participation of the community as part of our system of criminal justice. This type of democratic localism is essential for the proper functioning of the criminal system because the criminal justice principles embodying substantive constitutional norms can only be defined through community interactions at the local level. Accordingly, returning the community to its proper role in deciding punishment for wrongdoers would both improve criminal process and …
