A “Not-So Radical” Urban Political-Economic Narrative: Transforming Failed Liberal And Conservative Approaches To Poverty And Related Social Problems: A Thematic Poverty, Class And Inequality Working Paper, R. K. Piper, Minshuai Ding
A “Not-So Radical” Urban Political-Economic Narrative: Transforming Failed Liberal And Conservative Approaches To Poverty And Related Social Problems: A Thematic Poverty, Class And Inequality Working Paper, R. K. Piper, Minshuai Ding
Past Publications
This paper re-examines and updates a theoretical urban political-economic perspective, presented 40 years ago by David M. Gordon1 and other scholars in his “Problems in Political Economy: An Urban Perspective (1977).” This theoretical understanding and narrative (termed “radical” at the time), maintains that both conservative and liberal approaches to poverty and related social problems, have failed and will ultimately continue to fail for a singular, underlying reason. That is, they share the view that the primary purpose and role of the State and government, is to support the continuing development, operation and successful economic-outcomes of the owners and investors in …

Exploring "Gezi Ruhu" Activism: Seriality And The Rhetorical Study Of 21st Century Protest, Avi Luce
Exploring "Gezi Ruhu" Activism: Seriality And The Rhetorical Study Of 21st Century Protest, Avi Luce
Dissertations - ALL
Abstract Exploring "Gezi ruhu" Activism: Seriality and the Rhetorical Study of 21st Century Protest is an examination of three case studies using contemporary uptakes of seriality—a social arrangement that specifically considers passive relationships engendered by the physical environment—and rhetorical theory as combined analytic lenses. Examples of 21-century protest, specifically Gezi Protests in Istanbul, Turkey, “Free CeCe” activism in Minneapolis, Minnesota and “Faces of Pride” in Syracuse, New York point to collective arrangements as vital components to understanding activism, particularly how individuals come to and engage in collective protest rhetorically. Seriality additionally can guide methodological practices that foreground activists’ experience and …

In Pursuit Of Intercultural Competency During Study Abroad, Leslie Johnson
In Pursuit Of Intercultural Competency During Study Abroad, Leslie Johnson
Capstone Collection
Higher education institutions often promote their study abroad programs as a way for their students to achieve intercultural competency, which is seen as an important skill to have as the world becomes more globalized. The belief is that study abroad programs will lead to a greater chance of students gaining intercultural competency by having a large amount of in-person interactions with others from different backgrounds. Authors such as Deardorff (2008) and Benet (2009) note that if a student has a high level of intercultural competency, they not only have the desire to interact with those of other cultural backgrounds, but …

“They Write Me Off And Don't Give Me A Chance To Learn Anything”: Positioning, Discipline, And Black Masculinities In School, Quaylan Allen
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study examines the schooling of black male students in a U.S. high school. Drawing upon positioning theory and student resistance literature, I describe how the students make meaning of the pathologizing positioning practices of the school, including how they resist and internalize dominant discourses about black masculinity and how their performances of particular masculinities within the school are met with surveillance, regulation, and discipline. I argue that schools are locations where dominant ideologies of black masculinities are imposed, contested, and sometimes reproduced.

In March 2017, an employee of New York’s Civilian Complaint Review Board leaked the disciplinary record of Daniel Pantaleo to the media. Pantaleo, the police officer who choked Eric Garner to death in the video that went public and horrified many citizens, is under federal investigation after a Staten Island grand jury refused to indict him for Garner’s death. Legal Aid Society attorneys had unsuccessfully sought the release of his records in the courts for years. The leak of his records is the public face of an important but rarely discussed issue facing police, legislators, judges, lawyers, and scholars who …

Musings And Silences Of Chief Justice William Osgoode: Digest Marginalia About The Reception Of Imperial Law, G. Blaine Baker
Musings And Silences Of Chief Justice William Osgoode: Digest Marginalia About The Reception Of Imperial Law, G. Blaine Baker
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article focuses on musings and silences in the margins of Canadian Chief Justice William Osgoode’s late-eighteenth-century law library, to understand the role he assigned to Westminster-based imperial law in the transmission of British justice to the colonies. It concludes that this role was limited, mostly by Osgoode’s greater commitment of time and energy to legislative and executive branches of government than to the judiciary, and by his sometimes cavalier impatience with English courts and legal commentators.
Why Do We Still Read George Orwell?, Neil Mcbeath
Why Do We Still Read George Orwell?, Neil Mcbeath
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This paper approaches Orwell’s writing from the perspective of the 21st century and asks whether Animal Farm, his satirical fable of the USSR, and the dystopian vision of Nineteen Eighty-Four remain relevant. It dismisses the suggestion that these last two novels can be regarded as the natural culmination of Orwell’s earlier work, principally by examining these other writings demonstrates that there is no natural trajectory. The paper also refers to key dates in Orwell’s life and comments on his career at those particular moments. Orwell remains relevant, the paper concludes, because the forces of oppression he so vehemently opposed remain …

Pardon And Parole In Prohibition-Era New York: Discretionary Justice In The Administrative State, Carolyn Strange
Pardon And Parole In Prohibition-Era New York: Discretionary Justice In The Administrative State, Carolyn Strange
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Historians of early-modern England and British colonies have productively applied Douglas Hay’s germinal study of mercy. In contrast, historians of the United States have overlooked the utility of the conceptual tools Hay provided to prize open the mitigation of punishment across time and place. In the decade that followed the First World War, disputes over the proper role of mercy and administrative discretion were as heated as they were in Hanoverian England. In Jazz Age New York, fears of gangsterism and concern over the apparent laxity of parole regulations put the proponents of Progressive penology on the defensive. This article …
Sex, Race, And Motel Guests: Another Look At King V Barclay, Sarah E. Hamill
Sex, Race, And Motel Guests: Another Look At King V Barclay, Sarah E. Hamill
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The 1961 case of King v Barclay is something of a footnote in the history of discrimination against Black Canadians. If it is cited at all, it is usually cited alongside the more famous racism cases, such as Christie v York, as proof of the widespread nature of racism in Canada. In this paper, I re-read the trial decision and examine the original case file to show that the facts of King and the racism in the case are more complex than usually realized. King emerged out of a series of errors from both King and Barclay’s Motel which resulted …
