Reading Between The Pictures: Documenting Economic Hardship In A Neoliberal Age, Pamela Ann Barker
Reading Between The Pictures: Documenting Economic Hardship In A Neoliberal Age, Pamela Ann Barker
Theses - ALL
ABSTRACT:
This thesis is interested in the ways that documentary photojournalism of economic hardship has changed in response to a neoliberal context. Analysis is centered on photographer Anthony Suau’s photo essay “Struggling Cleveland,” captured for TIME magazine in 2008. Suau’s photographs of economic hardship break from a tradition of photojournalism that focused on drama and emotion. I consider what appears and does not appear in the photographs, with particular attention to how the neoliberal context influences the content and mode of address of the photos. The photographs are analyzed independently for the ways that neoliberalism appears within each frame and …
Facial Emotional Perception, Psychosis, Antisocial Traits, And Violence In Schizophrenia, Clarita Villafranca Hipol Ligot
Facial Emotional Perception, Psychosis, Antisocial Traits, And Violence In Schizophrenia, Clarita Villafranca Hipol Ligot
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compromised social cognition, psychosis, and antisocial traits are associated with violence in individuals with schizophrenia. Facial emotional perception (FEP) has been used to measure social cognition in schizophrenia, but its relationships to psychosis, antisocial behavior, and violence have not been explored. Archival data from a sample of 38 participants ages 18-55 with schizophrenia were analyzed in a quasi-experimental design using a 2-way analysis of variance to determine the relationship of psychosis, antisocial traits, and FEP. The main factors of the analysis were psychosis, classified as either high or low, and antisocial traits, classified as high or low. The dependent variable …

Educating To The Collaborative Care Model, Darcy N. Duncan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this project was the lack of experienced RNs needed in the acute care setting to deliver safe, quality patient care, while effectively managing resources and providing job satisfaction. The purpose of this project was to determine if an education module designed to educate charge and rover nurses on the Collaborative Care Model (CCM) would enhance staff nurses' abilities to provide safe, high quality care to patients, and improve staff nurse retention on one unit in an acute care setting. The theoretical frameworks utilized to guide the education module included: Lewin's theory of planned change, Benner's novice …

A Pedagogy Of Witnessing: Linguistic And Visual Frames Of The Dark Side In The Multimodal Classroom, Lindsay Hingst
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
“A Pedagogy of Witnessing: Linguistic and Visual Frames of the Dark Side in the Multimodal Classroom,” focuses on the theoretical and practical benefits of implementing written, oral, and visual testimonies from traumatic history as a tool for teaching the importance of empathetic and ethical composition practices. Specifically, this dissertation provides resource material for a critical pedagogical model that supports “responsible witnessing” through short writing assignments and a final research project that analyze selected narratives, historical accounts, images, and films spanning World War II and the Vietnam War to more recent global events. My hope is that my work will be …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Colour produced by wavelength-dependent light scattering is a key component of visual communication in nature and acts particularly strongly in visual signalling by structurallycoloured animals during courtship. Two miniature peacock spiders (Maratus robinsoni and M. chrysomelas) court females using tiny structured scales (~ 40 × 10 μm2) that reflect the full visual spectrum. Using TEM and optical modelling, we show that the spiders’ scales have 2D nanogratings on microscale 3D convex surfaces with at least twice the resolving power of a conventional 2D diffraction grating of the same period. Whereas the long optical path lengths required …

Designing Effective Messages To Promote Future Zika Vaccine Uptake, Jeanine Guidry
Designing Effective Messages To Promote Future Zika Vaccine Uptake, Jeanine Guidry
Theses and Dissertations
The Zika virus is associated with the devastating birth defect microcephaly, and while a vaccine was not yet available in early-2017, several were under development. It is imperative to identify effective communication strategies to promote uptake of a new vaccine, particularly among women of reproductive age. Moreover, though the Zika outbreak has received much social media attention, little is known about these conversations on Instagram. The purpose of this dissertation, therefore, was to understand current Zika-focused communication on Instagram and to inform effective communication strategies to promote future Zika vaccine uptake intent.
The study aims were: (1) explore Zika conversations …
Ineffable: Latency In Symbolic Languages, Sirah Yoo
Ineffable: Latency In Symbolic Languages, Sirah Yoo
Theses and Dissertations
The design process demands comprehensive knowledge of visual signs and symbols with a focus on visual literacy; it is related to visual syntax, semantics, and the pragmatics of contexts. My work is an interdisciplinary investigation into how designers integrate polysemantic signs into their design process for particular and highly individualized audiences. By analyzing the role of signs in specific contexts across the spectrum of arts, society, literature, and semiotics, a designer's understanding of the cyclical nature of interpretation and reinterpretation in complex environments creates an avenue for cultivating a new schema that provides further levels of interpretations and different access …

Communication Strategies As Drivers Of Nonprofit Donor Retention, Tamieka Jameson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to scholars and organizations that focus on the performance of organizations in the nonprofit sector, retaining loyal and engaged donors has been a critical component of sustainability. Through the conceptual lens of single- and double-loop learning and organizational communications theory, this single-case study explored donor communication strategies used by 3 executive-level leaders of a nonprofit organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Data collected from semistructured interviews, organizational documents, and Guidestar, an online information service specializing in reporting on U.S. nonprofit companies, were manually coded and thematically analyzed. Two key themes emerged: effective processes for donor communication strategy development and organizational learning …

The Case Of The Tic Tac Toe-Playing Chicken: Programed Instruction And Behaviorism In Music Theory Pedagogy, Greg Pearsall, Anna Gawboy (Reviewer)
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
The year 2018 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of Paul O. Harder’s Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music. The past half-century has witnessed the professionalization and expansion of the field of music theory, several shifts in pedagogical philosophies and methods, and a radical disruption in how people access, interact with, and store information via the internet and electronic devices. The tenth edition of Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music, revised by Greg Steinke and released in 2010, is a time capsule of pedagogical thinking about music theory. It simultaneously inspires wonder at discarded relics of the past and reveals …

The White Rose Movement: The Rhetorical Situation And Rhetorical Stances Surrounding The Six Anti-Nazi/Anti-War Leaflets, Veronica Ruth Cruz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study focuses on the White Rose Movement's six anti-war/anti-Nazi leaflets the Movement produced and distributed between June 1942 and February 22, 1943 in Munich, Germany. The persuasiveness of the non-violent resistance Movement was analyzed and discussed using a Bitzerean and Booth rhetorical analysis. Though numerous active and passive social protests, such as marches, music, and rallies, have been examined rhetorically in the past, the research surrounding the written form of protest is minor. In direct regards to the White Rose Movement, specifically, the Movement has yet to be examined through a rhetorical lens until now. The Movement and its …

Perceptions Of Parental Child Homicide In English Popular Visual Culture 1800-1850, Margaret L. Arnot
Perceptions Of Parental Child Homicide In English Popular Visual Culture 1800-1850, Margaret L. Arnot
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article discusses in depth several English illustrated broadsides produced in the first half of the nineteenth century and depicting child homicides. It provides the most detailed analysis to date of the complex interplay of illustration, verse and prose on murder sheets from the period. The cultural representations of homicides of children found in these broadsides contributed in important ways to understandings of culpability for the killings of infants and young children. Rather than simply illustrating the texts on the broadsides, the visual images amplified the emotional resonance of this medium, arguably increasing its effectiveness. In the hands of anonymous, …

Recovery From Design, Cassandra J. Ellison
Recovery From Design, Cassandra J. Ellison
Theses and Dissertations
Through research, inquiry, and an evaluation of Recovery By Design, a ‘design therapy’ program that serves people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities, it is my assertion that the practice of design has therapeutic potential and can aid in the process of recovery. To the novice, the practices of conception, shaping form, and praxis have empowering benefit especially when guided by Conditional and Transformation Design methods together with an emphasis on materiality and vernacular form.
