Mega-Events And Tourism: The Case Of Brazil, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson
Mega-Events And Tourism: The Case Of Brazil, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
Mega-sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup are expensive affairs. Host countries often justify the spending required to stage these events by predicting that mega-events will draw large numbers of tourists. This paper analyzes monthly foreign tourist arrivals into Brazil between 2003 and 2015 and finds that the 2014 FIFA World Cup increased foreign tourism by roughly one million visitors. This number far exceeded expectations, but we show that roughly a quarter of this increase in foreign tourism was caused by the fortuitous advancement of Argentina’s national team, and potential hosts should not count on the event to consistently …

Metabolic Biomarkers Following A Short And Long Bout Of High-Intensity Functional Training In Recreationally Trained Men, Brian Kliszczewicz, Robert Buresh, Emily E. Bechke, Cassie M. Williamson
Faculty Articles
Glucose regulation is a fundamental process of metabolic function, and is acutely altered by physical activity. High-Intensity Functional Training (HIFT) is a form of exercise performed using combinations of various modalities and durations. It is unknown if the metabolic responses to HIFT are similar to more commonly studied modalities (e.g., cycling and treadmill exercise), or if exercise duration will influence glucose regulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a Short (< 5-min) and Long (15-min) bout of HIFT on plasma metabolic biomarkers. Ten apparently healthy males (28.11 ± 5.09yrs) participated in this study. Two HIFT sessions (SHORT and LONG) were performed in a crossover fashion. Blood plasma was collected at four time points: PRE, POST, 1HR, and 3HR in order to examine glucose (GLU), insulin (INS), epinephrine (E), and norepinephrine (NE) responses. No trial dependent difference between the SHORT and LONG bouts in GLU (p=0.054), INS (p=0.671), E (p=0.078), and NE (p=0.194). A time effect was observed in both bouts only at POST for GLU (p<0.001), INS (p=0.011), E (p<0.001), and NE (p<0.001). All times returned to baseline values (p>0.05), except for lowered 3HR E (p=0.007). This study demonstrated that both SHORT and LONG bouts of HIFT elicited GLU, INS, E, and NE …

Effects Of Upward Football Reclassification On Revenues, Football Attendance, And Enrollment, Charles Bell
Effects Of Upward Football Reclassification On Revenues, Football Attendance, And Enrollment, Charles Bell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With an ever increasing chasm between the have and have nots in college athletics, athletic directors and university administrators view reclassification as a way to increase financial standing and gain valuable exposure for their school despite mixed findings by recent studies. The process of reclassification costs schools sizable financial and labor investments detracting from their academic endeavors. The schools at the highest level of collegiate football competition enjoy constant national television exposure for their school resulting in many direct and indirect benefits. A repeated measures ANOVA was utilized to assess the change in athletic department revenues, student enrollment and football …
Investigating The Impact Of Corporate Social Responsibility On Conative Loyalty In Collegiate Sports, Sunyoong Kim
Investigating The Impact Of Corporate Social Responsibility On Conative Loyalty In Collegiate Sports, Sunyoong Kim
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been an important topic in business and other disciplines due to its various benefits for both society (e.g., contributing to public health, safety, education, human rights, community well-being, environment) and organizations (e.g., attracting new customers, enhancing sales of products, developing positive brand image or reputation) (Inoue, 2011; Kim, 2015; Kotler & Lee, 2005; Smith & Westerbeek, 2007). Many consumers expect corporate organizations to demonstrate their commitments and contributions to the community (Marin, Ruiz, & Rubio, 2009; Walker & Heere, 2011). Thus, it is important to satisfy their expectations through social activities since consumers are considered …
An Investigation Of Sport Sponsorship Antecedents And Outcomes Through Levels Of Sponsor Prominence, Benjamin Colin Cork
An Investigation Of Sport Sponsorship Antecedents And Outcomes Through Levels Of Sponsor Prominence, Benjamin Colin Cork
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Currently, global sport sponsorship is a multi-billion dollar industry that continues to show strong year-to-year growth (IEG, 2016). Additionally, the current body of sport sponsorship literature has reported the effects of salient attitudinal and behavioral constructs on sponsorship effectiveness. For example, previous studies have indicated that the perceived sincerity and attitude toward a sponsor do positively effect a consumer's behavioral intentions toward a sponsor (Speed & Thompson, 2000; Biscaia, Correia, Rosado, Ross, & Maroco, 2013). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to measure consumer attitudes and behavioral intent toward sponsor, through experimental design, when exposed to one of three …

Understanding The Relationship Between Performance Characteristics, Shot Selection And Decision-Making In The Game Of Tennis, Dotan Israel Shvorin
All Dissertations
In order to improve tennis player performance, we first need to investigate the features of performance that define a tennis player. This research begins with a focus on understanding how performance errors occur in the game. Over a span of two years, data were collected and analyzed in order to demonstrate the impact of various performance characteristics on the player's capability. The outcome of this work was twofold. The research has been employed by the Clemson University tennis program to design improved training drills. The research has also been used to form a baseline for making decisions at the management …

Ball Is Life: Black Male Student-Athletes Narrate Their Division I Experiences, Eno Attah Meekins
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the experiences of Black male student-athletes in Division I sports and used critical race methodology to present counter narratives. These narratives highlighted successes and heightened awareness about the needs and concerns of an extremely important, but often silenced, population. The purpose of this research was to examine the experiences of Black male student-athletes in the Division I revenue-generating sports of basketball and football. This study examined how Black males perceived the effectiveness of the NCAA supports in place for their academic success, degree attainment, and postcollegiate leadership and career opportunities. This dissertation also sought to understand …

Measuring Accommodation On Facebook Between Single-A Minor League Baseball Teams And Facebook Users, Michael James Stocz
Measuring Accommodation On Facebook Between Single-A Minor League Baseball Teams And Facebook Users, Michael James Stocz
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The following research was designed to introduce CAT into a practical setting for social media managers while primarily examining Minor League Baseball (MiLB) at the Single-A level. Single-A baseball has not been examined solely in a social media setting, which was why this level of MiLB was selected. Study A was designed to measure the levels of accommodation across various posting strategies (neoliberal, social, team related, open code) and the subsequent number of likes and number of comments accompanying each post. The accommodation scores, measured through the Language Inquiry and Word Count software (LIWC, pronounced “Luke”), accompanied by a series …

Domestic Violence And The National Football League, Kelsey Rentner
Domestic Violence And The National Football League, Kelsey Rentner
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
In 2014, the National Football League (NFL) faced extreme criticism for the way it handled the three domestic violence cases that emerged into the spotlight. The Ray Rice video that showed him punching his at-the-time fiancé, as well as the several other domestic violence cases among NFL players that quickly followed, shed a light on what seemed to be a well-hidden problem within the league. Since being in the public eye, the league has not been effective with its communication efforts to prevent the issue of domestic violence and rebuild its reputation among stakeholders. This project uses evidence-based literature to …

Socio-Structural Intergroup Characteristics As Predictors Of Intention To Join University Alumni Association, Gideon Mazambani, Stephen Reysen, Shonda Gibson, Lavelle Hendricks
Faculty Publications
We examined the association between socio-structural intergroup characteristics (i.e., permeability of group boundaries, legitimacy of status difference between ingroup and outgroups, stability of status difference) and students’ intention to join the university alumni association. Prior theory and research suggests that group members assess the intergroup context to direct identity management strategies (e.g., leave group, collective action). College students in their last semester at a university were asked to rate the perceived socio-structural characteristics of the ingroup (compared to other universities) and their intention to join the alumni association. The results showed that perceiving one’s ingroup as legitimately high status and …

Strategic Management In Small Business: An Exploratory Study, Nicholas Gary Schlereth Ph.D., Mba
Strategic Management In Small Business: An Exploratory Study, Nicholas Gary Schlereth Ph.D., Mba
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Small businesses make up approximately 98% of all businesses in the United States, but little is known about how they engage with their communities and engage in strategic management (Small Business Administration, 2016). To understand more about how small businesses engage in these practices, this study seeks to explore these topics through a technology enhanced qualitative study design (Marshall & Rossman, 2015). The study sought to replicate face-to-face interviews through an online survey with open-ended questions designed to learn from small business decision makers regarding their actions and the actions of their organizations. The study had 45 total participants from …
Characteristics And Success Of Long-Term Contracts In Major League Baseball, Briton A. Hagan
Characteristics And Success Of Long-Term Contracts In Major League Baseball, Briton A. Hagan
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The current labor market in MLB is extremely lucrative for both players and owners; however, the system is not without its problems. Over the past two decades, owners have become increasingly aggressive when signing elite players. Owners must offer long-term contracts in excess of $100 million to outbid other teams and secure an elite player to be the face of their franchise. Because MLB contracts are guaranteed, owners take a tremendous risk when signing players to a long-term deal. The purpose of the study was to apply a framework for what a “successful” MLB contract is and then measure all …

Participation In Youth Running Events: The Role Of Parental Involvement And Satisfaction, Michelle L. Redmond
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
An increasing number of running events are being targeted to youth and are adding to the growing road racing industry. Offering running events for children along with a lineup of races ranging from 5K runs to marathons for adults is a way for race organizers to expand their businesses, increase economic impact in their communities and meet the needs of the entire family. In addition to economic benefits, there are other benefits associated with running events for youth. Community running events provide one potential intervention to counter rising childhood obesity rates by increasing the levels of physical activity for youth. …

Mid-Season Coaching Changes In The Nba, Kenan Spruill, Adam Roberts, Joseph Price
Mid-Season Coaching Changes In The Nba, Kenan Spruill, Adam Roberts, Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
“When the going gets tough, we fire the coach”, this quote from former coach and current ESPN analyst Jeff van Gundy represents part of the current trend in sports. Management fires the coach in the hope that the new one can lead the team to glory. Replacing coach’s midseason does not happen often, but when it does, it is the best choice for the team? We are attempting to see if there is a legitimate reason for firing a coach midseason. Considering the fact that changing coach’s mid-season requires the team to pay for both the old and new coaches’ …
