Cultural Values And Gender Equity On National Olympic Committee Boards, Na Young Ahn, George B. Cunningham
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 857-874, 2017. Women are under-represented in leadership positions throughout sport, and researchers have largely explored organizational, group, and individual antecedents of this phenomenon. The purpose of the current study was to expand on this understanding by investigating the influence of a country’s cultural values on the representation of women on National Olympic Committees. Drawing from Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, the authors included five cultural values: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, masculinity-femininity, and long-term orientation. Results indicate that women constituted only 19.7 percent of the positions on the boards. Regression analysis, controlling for size of …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 845-856, 2017. Historically, men have been characterized as task-oriented leaders who are motivated by desires for autonomy, wealth, and power (17, 33). However, these “masculine” views of leadership might not accurately capture the leadership motivations of Millennial males as the views were developed in previous generations (4). Given the commitment of many Millennials towards socially responsible attitudes and behaviors (18, 25), we utilized a qualitative research design to examine the influence of social change on the leadership motivations of Millennial male intercollegiate athletes. In doing so, we found participants were motivated to lead in …

Are You Welcomed? A Racial And Ethnic Comparison Of Perceived Welcomeness In Sport Participation, Trevor Bopp, Robert Turick, Joshua D. Vadeboncoeur, Thomas J. Aicher
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 833-844, 2017. Sport has become racialized such that minority youth accrue limited health and academic benefits from participation, compared to their White counterparts. Understanding the welcomeness that minorities feel in sport, leisure and physical activities plays an important role in breaking down barriers to participation. Thus, the overall aim of this study is to further examine the determinants of sport participation, particularly as it relates to race, socialization and perceived welcomeness. College students (N = 451) scored their perceived level of welcomeness for Whites, African Americans and Hispanic/Latinos in 14 sports. Results reveal significant …

Does Time Heal All Wounds? A Case Study On Rival Perceptions Before And After Conference Realignment, Cody T. Havard, Daniel L. Wann, Timothy D. Ryan, Norman O'Neal
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 823-832, 2017. The current longitudinal case study investigated how conference realignment and beginning new annual competitions impacted fan rival perceptions for fans of the Texas A&M Aggies, Missouri Tigers, and Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. In particular, fan rival perceptions before and after conference realignment were compared to determine if significant differences were present. Findings indicate that history plays an important role in rivalry as fans of teams sharing long-standing rivalries with schools in their previous conference (i.e., Texas A&M/Texas and Missouri/Kansas) did not differ in their rival perceptions before or after conference realignment. …

t's not just the players being tracked throughout the season Each time German football team Bayern Munich plays a home game, the event generates nine million separate pieces of data. There’s data about what the players do on field gathered from sensors in their uniforms; data from videos of where the crowd moves to at different times in the event and where the bottlenecks are; data on sales at food and clothing concessions and how the crowds move to them; and data on where the workers and volunteers are at every point in the event.

Evaluation Of Attitudes Toward Women’S Collegiate Athletics, Ceyda Mumcu, Gregory Greenhalgh
Sport Management Faculty Publications
While previous research has established a clear connection between attitudes and consumption intention for men’s spectator sports (Dwyer, 2013; Lim, Martin, & Kwak, 2010; Mahony & Howard, 1998; Mahony & Moorman, 1999; Mahony & Moorman, 2000), the attitude-consumption intention relationship has not been studied in the women’s collegiate sports context. The purpose of the current study was to investigate consumer’s attitudes towards women’s collegiate basketball, examine the impact of the components of attitude on consumers’ future consumption intentions, and assess the differences in attitude and consumption intention based on gender and past consumption behavior. Development Of The Referee Retention Scale, Lynn L. Ridinger, Kyungun R. Kim, Stacy Warner, Jacob K. Tingle
School of Business Faculty Research
Building upon the current sport officiating research, this study puts forth the Referee Retention Scale (RRS). Through a three-phase process, the researchers developed a valid and reliable scale to predict sport officials’ job satisfaction and intention to continue. The first phase consisted of instrument development, while the second phase included field testing of referees (n=253). After EFA and Rasch analysis, the resultant refined scale from phase 1 and 2 was then administered to 979 referees in phase 3. Phase 3 results using CFA indicated that the 7-factor, 28-item RRS was a valid and reliable tool for measuring and predicting referee …

Reasons Why Small, Private Schools Should Start Football Programs, Ania Izabela Rynarzewska, Steven Mcclung
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
College football programs are booming in popularity. College football benefits both fans and schools. Those benefits differ between small and large schools. This paper looked at reasons why small, private schools should start football program, Findings suggest a positive effect of fan identity, expectation of enjoyment and perceived importance of football to the school on intention to attend games and consume football related goods. Relationship between intentions to donate and enjoyment and importance were partially mediated by intentions to consume. Fan identity had no direct effect on intentions to donate. This study suggests that small-scale football programs can benefit students …

A New Player In The Game: Examining Differences In Motives And Consumption Between Traditional, Hybrid, And Daily Fantasy Sport Users, James Weiner, Brendan Dwyer
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Due in part to a $200 million advertising campaign, daily fantasy sport (DFS) participation exploded in 2015. With faster payouts and unlimited lineup options, the activity has added to an already thriving fantasy sports industry. However, little is known about the distinct attitudes and behaviors that drive DFS participants. The current study examined 511 participants who played DFS-only, traditional, season-long fantasy football (TFS), and those who played both activities for motive and behavioral differences. Results indicated statistically significant motive scores differences across the groups as it relates to the factors of gambling, social interaction, and competition while escape and …

The Effects Of Tax Increment Financing On Assessed Land Values, Burdette Edward Fullerton Ii
The Effects Of Tax Increment Financing On Assessed Land Values, Burdette Edward Fullerton Ii
Dissertations
Public policy debate regarding the use of economic development incentives is active and growing with a focus on the costs and benefits to communities around the country. Communities grant economic development incentives that encourage real estate development, such as tax increment financing, without knowing if the growth of land value or building type valuation inside of tax increment areas accelerate faster than areas outside of tax increment districts. Without the knowledge of how tax increment financing influences land values, communities risk the misallocation of resources from public entities, such as schools and libraries to private entities. In an era of …
