Criticality In Physical Education Teacher Education: Do Graduating Standards Constrain And Or Inhibit Curriculum Implementation, Ian Culpan
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Over the last decade and a half, physical education curricula in New Zealand and Australia have had a strong socio-cultural-critical orientation, providing in depth opportunities for critical inquiry. This article suggests that trying to achieve a criticality maybe impeded and or constrained by present graduating teacher standards. In the discussion, it is highlighted that neither New Zealand nor Australia graduating teacher standards overtly suggest critical inquiry as a part of beginning teachers’ required knowledge, skills or dispositions. This could be a significant constraint on maximising the intent of the New Zealand and Australia physical education curricula. As a result, this …
Preservice Teachers’ Identity Development During The Teaching Internship, Tran Le Huu Nghia, Huynh Ngoc Tai
Preservice Teachers’ Identity Development During The Teaching Internship, Tran Le Huu Nghia, Huynh Ngoc Tai
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This article reports the analysis of two preservice teachers’ narratives to highlight the process of teacher identity development during their teaching internship. The analysis showed that their teacher identities had been shaped before they entered the teacher education program where it continued to be shaped by educational experts. In that way, they formed expectations or imaginations of their professional roles and responsibilities prior to the teaching internships. When entering the teaching internships, these pre-existing expectations or imaginations were challenged by the reality they faced. Their engagement with the internship, resilience and negotiations of professional practices were found to be significant …
Practical And Theoretical Knowledge In Contrast: Teacher Educators´ Discursive Positions, Marie-Helene Zimmerman Nilsson
Practical And Theoretical Knowledge In Contrast: Teacher Educators´ Discursive Positions, Marie-Helene Zimmerman Nilsson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Higher education in general and teacher education in particular have been subjected to significant changes. As there are few studies examining how actors rhetorically position themselves within this context, the ambition of the paper is to study conversations between teacher educators related to norms and values in education. The aim of the paper is to study interpretative repertoires and subject positions that are constructed in conversations between teacher educators and to discuss these in relation to qualities in teacher education. The theoretical framework emanates from post-structuralist and social constructionist theories. The empirical material consists of group conversations with teacher educators. …
Motivations And Concerns: Voices From Pre-Service Language Teachers, Suzan Kavanoz, Hatice G. Yüksel
Motivations And Concerns: Voices From Pre-Service Language Teachers, Suzan Kavanoz, Hatice G. Yüksel
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Contemporary interactionist theories conceive identity formation as a dynamic process that is continuously co-constructed within a social context. For pre-service language teachers, teacher education programs constitute the context in which their professional identities are formed. This cross-sectional qualitative study aims at exploring variations in pre-service language teachers’ motivations, and concerns in order to understand how their identity is developed throughout teacher education programs. Data were collected from 121 pre-service language teachers at a state university in Turkey through their written reports. The differences across years with respect to their motivations and concerns indicated that as pre-service language teachers proceed along …
What Efl Student Teachers Think About Their Professional Preparation: Evaluation Of An English Language Teacher Education Programme In Spain, Juan De Dios Martínez Agudo
What Efl Student Teachers Think About Their Professional Preparation: Evaluation Of An English Language Teacher Education Programme In Spain, Juan De Dios Martínez Agudo
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Given the importance of programme evaluation in the EFL teacher education, this research paper of exploratory-interpretive nature mainly focuses on both strengths and weaknesses identified through the analysis and/or critical evaluation of an EFL teacher education programme carried out in Spain. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were used in the study. The current TEFL programme has several strengths, but also certain significant shortcomings in light of the high percentage of undecided responses. The TEFL programme was evaluated positively by participant student teachers in general, in terms of pedagogic competence and promotion of reflection, although more input on English proficiency …
How Ideological Differences Influence Pre-Service Teachers’ Understandings Of Educational Success, Justin Sim
How Ideological Differences Influence Pre-Service Teachers’ Understandings Of Educational Success, Justin Sim
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper explores how popular ideological discourses within public policy are influencing the views and practices of pre-service teachers at a university in Melbourne. The research began by examining how educational success has been historically understood by individuals vis-à-vis government discourse. Three values and four corresponding ideological positions were used to create a theoretical framework. The researcher then surveyed a small cross-section of pre-service teachers to investigate how these values contributed to their understandings of educational success, and how these understandings were used to justify their receptions of neoliberal reforms in education. The data shows that democratic equality was the …
Pranayama Meditation (Yoga Breathing) For Stress Relief: Is It Beneficial For Teachers?, Stevie-Jae Hepburn, Mary Mcmahon
Pranayama Meditation (Yoga Breathing) For Stress Relief: Is It Beneficial For Teachers?, Stevie-Jae Hepburn, Mary Mcmahon
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The effects of stress can have a significant impact on an individual’s personal life, relationship with colleagues, job satisfaction and career prospects. If unmanaged, stress can be the trigger that drives talented, motivated teachers out of our classrooms and into other professions. Yoga and meditation have been prescribed as a form of complementary alternative medicine for the treatment of stress, anxiety and depression. The current exploratory, mixed-methods case study aimed to determine if the participants in a five-week pranayama meditation (yoga breathing) course experienced a degree of stress relief. The course included one 60-minute weekly meditation class focusing on breath …

The Contextual Motivational Conditions For L2 Pedagogy: A Case Study From The Arabian Gulf, Muhammad Athar Shah
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This article reports on a mixed-method research study into situated motivational conditions available for the English language (L2) pedagogy at a university in Saudi Arabia. The current study evaluated the L2 Learning Experience of the students by focusing on the key contextual factors that included teachers’ pedagogical practices, group dynamics in the classrooms, and English language course. Framed within the interpretive paradigm, the study utilised a structured questionnaire, followed by open-ended interviews with purposefully chosen language learners for data collection. The conceptual framework of the study was based on Dornyei’s (2005, 2009) L2 Motivational Self System – one of the …

Interpretations Of Mentoring During Early Childhood Education Mentor Training, Päivi Kupila, Tuulikki Ukkonen-Mikkola, Kyllikki Rantala
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This study examines how interpretations of mentoring by trainee mentors (TMs) changed over the course of a mentor training programme, and how this contributed to the TMs’ professional development. The context of the study was a mentor training programme for preschool teachers who mentor early childhood teacher students during their practicums. This article presents a thematic content analysis of qualitative narrative data gathered from the TMs’ narrative writings on the mentor training programme (N=36) and the TMs’ contributions at one focus group interview (N=5). The findings suggest that the TMs’ interpretations produced two main themes. First, changes in the interpretations …

Predictors Of Teacher Educators' Research Productivity, Fadia M. Nasser-Abu Alhija, Arin Majdob
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This study examined the relationship between teacher educators' research productivity (RP) and their background and professional characteristics, attitudes, motives, obstacles and time devoted to research. The sample included 161 teacher educators from four teacher education colleges in Israel. The findings indicate the significance of five variables for predicting RP: academic degree, rank, administrative position, desire to develop new knowledge and learn from research findings and perceived insufficient research competence and self-confidence. These variables account for 37.2% of the variance in RP. The results from this study provide useful information for teacher education institutions and policy makers regarding variables significantly related …

The main purpose of this study was to validate a Malay Language version of a 30-item teacher education program coherence questionnaire. Two different samples of preservice teachers completed the Malay translation of the questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis (N=220) showed four types of perceived program coherence which had good internal consistency ranging from 0.79 to 0.86: ‘Opportunity to enact practice’, ‘Opportunity to analyze practice’, ‘Opportunity to connect ideas across courses’ and ‘Coherence between courses and practical experience’. The confirmatory factor analysis (N= 234) provided support for a four-factor model. In addition, an analysis of criterion validity of the four types of …
Reforming Initial Teacher Education: A Call For Innovation, Tony Yeigh, David Lynch
Reforming Initial Teacher Education: A Call For Innovation, Tony Yeigh, David Lynch
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
A variety of public critiques, reports and government reviews into Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Australia and globally have called for a rethink on teacher education. Similarly, key researchers such as Hattie (2011), Smith and Lynch (2010) and Ingvarson et al. (2014) have argued for new, innovative approaches to ITE that are able to provide alternative pathways to the training of teachers. From this perspective the current article examines several models and features of ITE in terms of innovation. This examination provides clarification concerning the nature and role of ITE reform, as well as a series of arguments highlighting the …
Emotions And Casual Teachers: Implications Of The Precariat For Initial Teacher Education., Kathryn A. Jenkins, Jennifer Charteris, Michelle Bannister-Tyrrell, Marguerite Jones
Emotions And Casual Teachers: Implications Of The Precariat For Initial Teacher Education., Kathryn A. Jenkins, Jennifer Charteris, Michelle Bannister-Tyrrell, Marguerite Jones
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
It is the norm for the casual teaching precariat to experience insecure labour conditions requiring an additional skill set to teachers with stable employment. As more beginning teachers than ever before commence work in casual employment – often a tenuous and unsupported transition into the profession - it is beholden on teacher educators to re-think aspects of their preparation. Four teacher educators undertook ‘memory work’ based on their previous experiences as casual teachers. Content analysis of follow up focus group discussions stressed the emotional and challenging nature of casual teaching, for both novice and experienced teachers. Findings from this small …

Los Nuevos Románticos: Don Quijote En La Economía Irracional, La Gestión Empresarial Y El Liderazgo, Aurora Hermida-Ruiz
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
This article calls attention to the recent appearance of Don Quixote in the "real world" of economics, business management, and leadership development as a new, but mostly unnoticed chapter in the reading history of Cervantes's work. Providing an overview of this relatively new phenomenon, the article focuses on the pervasive influence of an unlikely defender of the "romantic approach": Stanford Graduate School of Business professor James March, an acclaimed intellectual and founding member of the revolutionary School of Behavioral Economics, whose original use of Don Quixote in leadership studies was ironically meant to provide a humanist antidote to the spread …
The Participatory Roots Of Selective Exposure: Baby Boomers, Political Protest, And Talk Radio, David A. Weaver
The Participatory Roots Of Selective Exposure: Baby Boomers, Political Protest, And Talk Radio, David A. Weaver
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2017
Much political communication research examines the effects of media on political attitudes and behavior. But what of the contributions of political behavior toward selective exposure? This study draws on literature from selective exposure and political socialization to explore whether one’s likelihood of engaging in selective exposure may originate in part during the “crystallization period” of young adulthood. After controlling for demographic and political variables in adolescence and midadulthood, an analysis of data from a four-wave longitudinal panel of “baby boomers” from 1965 to 1997 indicates that selective exposure can be traced to political protest activity during this time and, very …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
To develop and apply goals for future sustainability, we must consider what people care about and what motivates them to engage in solving sustainability issues. Sense of place theory and methods provide a rich source of insights that, like the socialecological systems perspective, assume an interconnected social and biophysical reality. However, these fields of research are only recently beginning to converge, and we see great potential for further engagement. Here, we present an approach and conceptual tools for how the sense of place perspective can contribute to social-ecological systems research. A brief review focuses on two areas where relation to …

Gender Pay Gap In Athletics, George Siliman
Gender Pay Gap In Athletics, George Siliman
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
The pay gap is a measure of what women are paid relative to men. It is important to to minimize the gender pay gap in athletics so it can successfully help society move in forward progression and not hinder on the past. The effects on women in professional sport setting, and the overall difference between males and females in athletics all play a significant role on the fluctuated pay gap.
Women play a prominent role in athletics but the lack of compensation devalues them as competitors and athletes. In sum, I learned about the fluctuation of the pay gap between …

The great author Jane Austen lived during a time period in which there was a patriarchal society installed which made it quite difficult for women rights similar to the Victorian Era. Both in Jane Austen’s society and the Victorian Era, there were huge gaps in gender equality. The society at the time made it easy for men to run everything that happened in society which in turn lead to women being at a huge disadvantage.Jane Austen showed people many examples of this inequality in her book Pride and Prejudice It is crucial as a society to improve from and correct …
Assisted Suicide, Valerie Ontiveros
Assisted Suicide, Valerie Ontiveros
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Assisted suicide is when a physician helps a terminally ill patient die without pain. As of right now, it is illegal in most states. Organizations about this issue were organized in the late 1930's (Humphry). According to Pro-Con. Org, 79% of patients requested assisted suicide even before they came terminally ill –if it got to that point.
Many states have different laws on assisted suicide. In no doubt, these patients go through a tremendous amount of pain and no one but themselves should decide when enough is enough. Technological advances have allowed this generation to help aid a person when …

Adaptive governance must work “on the ground,” that is, it must operate through structures and procedures that the people it governs perceive to be legitimate and fair, as well as incorporating processes and substantive goals that are effective in allowing social-ecological systems (SESs) to adapt to climate change and other impacts. To address the continuing and accelerating alterations that climate change is bringing to SESs, adaptive governance generally will require more flexibility than prior governance institutions have often allowed. However, to function as good governance, adaptive governance must pay real attention to the problem of how to balance this increased …

Adaptive management is an approach to natural resource management that uses structured learning to reduce uncertainties for the improvement of management over time. The origins of adaptive management are linked to ideas of resilience theory and complex systems. Rangeland management is particularly well suited for the application of adaptive management, having sufficient controllability and reducible uncertainties. Adaptive management applies the tools of structured decision making and requires monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment of management. Adaptive governance, involving sharing of power and knowledge among relevant stakeholders, is often required to address conflict situations. Natural resource laws and regulations can present a barrier …

Protected Areas As Social-Ecological Systems: Perspectives From Resilience And Social-Ecological Systems Theory, Graeme S. Cumming, Craig R. Allen
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Conservation biology and applied ecology increasingly recognize that natural resource management is both an outcome and a driver of social, economic, and ecological dynamics. Protected areas offer a fundamental approach to conserving ecosystems, but they are also social-ecological systems whose ecological management and sustainability are heavily influenced by people. This editorial, and the papers in the invited feature that it introduces, discuss three emerging themes in social-ecological systems approaches to understanding protected areas: (1) the resilience and sustainability of protected areas, including analyses of their internal dynamics, their effectiveness, and the resilience of the landscapes within which they occur; (2) …

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) has established a model for wildlife conservation planning over the last 3 decades. Management at a continental scale, leveraged funding, regional partnerships, and a strong science basis have been notable features. Periodic updates to the NAWMP occurred since implementation in 1986; however, a fundamental revision was accomplished in 2012 after extensive stakeholder engagement. An explicit fundamental goal for waterfowl conservation supporters was added in 2012, complementing existing goals for sustainable populations and sufficient habitat found in previous updates. We present a synopsis of progress toward implementation of the 2012 NAWMP and challenge the …

Influence Of Changing Thai Society On The Japanese Restaurant Industry In Bangkok, Mizue Miyamoto
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The number of Japanese restaurants in Bangkok has rapidly increased in the previous decade. According to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) (2015:8), there are 2,126 Japanese restaurants in all of Thailand, and twothirds of these are located in Bangkok. The number has been increasing by 20% every year since 2007. The quality is also outstanding. Tazatsu (2008:7) states: "There is Japanese food available which Japanese people feel tasty with the most reasonable price outside Japan". There must be some reasons for this expansion, but most of the existing studies on the Japanese restaurant industry in Thailand focus only on …
