Assessing Hiv-Related Outcomes Among Key Populations Accessing Community-Based Test And Start Services In Nigeria, Project Soar
HIV and AIDS
This activity brief describes a research study Project SOAR is conducting to better understand how to use existing key population community platforms in Nigeria to expand access to HIV treatment, the cost of such care provided outside of clinical health facilities, and the extent to which false positive misclassification may occur in outreach settings. Given the global “treat all” emphasis and the need to effectively scale up test and start services and minimize misclassification rates, these findings will be important in expanding timely antiretroviral treatment coverage in vulnerable communities in Nigeria and elsewhere.

Assessment Of The Implementation Of The Treat-All Guidelines (Test And Start) In Namibia, Project Soar
HIV and AIDS
The Government of Namibia has adopted “treat-all” guidelines, commonly referred to as test and start (TnS), as a national policy effective April 2017. These guidelines recommend that anyone who has tested positive for HIV should begin antiretroviral therapy (ART) as soon as possible. This brief describes the proposed research of a study team led by the Population Council to generate evidence on how the national rollout of the TnS guidelines and decentralization of ART services affect client-level treatment outcomes, quality of ART services, and treatment costs in Namibia. The results of this study will inform the implementation and scale-up of …

Preventing Pediatric Tuberculosis: A Randomized Trial Of Symptom-Based Screening Of South African Children Exposed To Tuberculosis, Population Council
Preventing Pediatric Tuberculosis: A Randomized Trial Of Symptom-Based Screening Of South African Children Exposed To Tuberculosis, Population Council
HIV and AIDS
In South Africa, a country with one of the highest levels of HIV prevalence, HIV-positive adults are the source case for a large proportion of pediatric tuberculosis (TB) cases. Unfortunately, TB index cases are not consistently asked about their child contacts, not all child contacts present to the clinic for TB screening, and it remains unknown what proportion of child contacts receive isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT)—a highly effective treatment for preventing TB in these children, long recommended by the World Health Organization. Project SOAR is assessing whether a symptom-based screening approach by TB nurses in community health clinics is more …

Populist Property Law, Anna Di Robilant
Populist Property Law, Anna Di Robilant
Connecticut Law Review
Property scholars think of property law as consisting of a small number of highly technical forms created a long time ago by "experts, i.e., legislatures and courts, which are hardly accessible to non-lawyers. This Article explores a new idea: the possibility that ordinary people, with little or no legal training, can become active participants in the creation of property law, directly intervening in the development of new property forms. The Article tells the story of two nineteenth-century American social movements that represented the "little guys "-workers and farmers-who used their 'folk legal" imagination to develop new property forms that would …
Privacy In Public Spaces: The Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy Against The Dragnet Use Of Facial Recognition Technology, Mariko Hirose
Privacy In Public Spaces: The Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy Against The Dragnet Use Of Facial Recognition Technology, Mariko Hirose
Connecticut Law Review
Our society is steadily marching towards a world in which cameras equipped with facial recognition technology could be used to conduct constant and dragnet surveillance on people as they walk down the street. The law, as is usual in the field of privacy and emerging technologies, is lagging behind—no clear set of constitutional rules constrains law enforcement’s use of this powerful technology, especially because the prevailing axiom has been that there is no right to privacy in public spaces. This Article challenges the axiom and argues that the dragnet, realtime uses of facial recognition technology violates reasonable expectations of privacy.
A Relational Feminist Approach To Conflict Of Laws, Roxana Banu
A Relational Feminist Approach To Conflict Of Laws, Roxana Banu
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Feminist writers have long engaged in critiques of private law. Surrogacy contracts or the “reasonable man” standard in torts, for example, have long been the subjects of thorough feminist analysis and critique. When private law issues touch on more than one jurisdiction, Conflict of Laws is the doctrine that determines which jurisdiction can try the case and—as separate questions—which jurisdiction’s law should apply and under what conditions a foreign judgment can be recognized and enforced. Yet, there are virtually no feminist perspectives on Conflict of Laws (also known as Private International Law). This is still more surprising when one considers …

Much of the current literature on plagiarism focuses on students, attempting to understand how students view the concept of plagiarism, the best ways to prevent it, and the impact of collaboration on the concept of original authorship. In this article, we look at the role of plagiarism in 761 conference abstracts written by graduate students, early- to late-career faculty, and industry representatives, representing institutions from nearly 70 countries. These abstracts were submitted for participation in an international conference focused on the liberal arts hosted by our institution over the past four years. This study analyzes the corpus for patterns of …
Judicial Departmentalism: An Introduction, Kevin C. Walsh
Judicial Departmentalism: An Introduction, Kevin C. Walsh
Scholarly Articles
This Article introduces the idea of judicial departmentalism and argues for its superiority to judicial supremacy. Judicial supremacy is the idea that the Constitution means for everybody what the Supreme Court says it means in deciding a case. Judicial departmentalism, by contrast, is the idea that the Constitution means in the judicial department what the Supreme Court says it means in deciding a case. Within the judicial department, the law of judgments, the law of remedies, and the law of precedent combine to enable resolutions by the judicial department to achieve certain kinds of settlements. Judicial departmentalism holds that these …

“Our Only Child Has Died” – A Study Of Bereaved Older Chinese Parents, Yongqiang Zheng, Thomas R. Lawson, Barbara Anderson Head
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
Long and complicated grief is a relevant factor contributing to the deterioration of the older adults’ later life quality. In China, the unintentional consequence of the one child policy has emerged. There, the group of older adults who lost their only child is called shiduers. The current study compared 42 older adults who lost their only child to 33 older adults who have a child, in term of their physical and mental health, and social support. The results confirmed the general deteriorating trend in those aspects of the bereaved Chinese parents’ life after their only child’s death. The results also …
