Campus Community Connections: Crew Callouts Encouraging Collaboration, Vincent Pickering Oct 2025

Campus Community Connections: Crew Callouts Encouraging Collaboration, Vincent Pickering

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

Creating the conditions that foster student engagement and success remains a key issue for SAE University College. As demonstrated by the “Student Surveys” and their focus on student satisfaction - I will reflect on an alternative approach that uses a more expansive, holistic, and ontological perspective that considers who and what students want to be, and are becoming. This paper presents ‘Crew Connect,’ an event on the Brisbane campus that works as a pedagogical intervention designed to address this gap by fostering curiosity-driven inquiry and collaboration. The event functions as an open-ended challenge, inviting students to soft-pitch creative projects to …

The types of industries that dominate employment in a county shape the health of the entire community, even for people who don't work in those sectors. This brief summarizes findings of a study that examined how five major employment sectors—agriculture, manufacturing, mining and construction, services, and professional services—were associated with overall county-level mortality rates and with mortality from drug overdoses, suicides, alcohol-related causes, and cardiometabolic disease among U.S. adults ages 25-64 from 2000 to 2022 Data are from the National Vital Statistics System and County Business Patterns. Findings show that the effects of local industries shift vary across time and …

Migration And U.S. Labor Market Effects Of The Mexican Drug War, Mark Borgschulte, Yuci Chen, Eduardo Medina-Cortina Oct 2025

Migration And U.S. Labor Market Effects Of The Mexican Drug War, Mark Borgschulte, Yuci Chen, Eduardo Medina-Cortina

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We estimate the effect of the Mexican drug war on Mexico-to-U.S. migration and the resulting effects on population, employment, and wages in U.S. labor markets. Our empirical strategy compares U.S. counties differentially connected to Mexican municipalities through historical migration networks, using drug violence triggered by close municipal elections in 2007–2008 as a source of exogenous variation. Over the following decade, migrants fleeing the violence—the vast majority of whom are undocumented—cause native-born U.S. workers’ employment rates to increase and unemployment rates to fall, while wages do not change. Employment gains are largest for natives without a college degree. Employment effects fade …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract This qualitative study examines the Family Language Policy (FLP) of second-generation Iranian American (SGIA) parents regarding the maintenance of their heritage language (HL), specifically Persian, within two U.S. contexts: Orange County, California, and Memphis, Tennessee. Based on Curdt-Christiansen and Huang’s (2020) dynamic FLP model and Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological systems theory, the research examines parental language ideologies and the impact of perceived ethnolinguistic vitality of their communities on their language ideologies. Semi-structured interviews and background questionnaires with ten families (primarily mothers, with some fathers) revealed complex and hybrid language ideologies. All participants expressed emotional and identity-related attachments to Persian, viewing …

The Horror And The Passion: The Christian/Secular Paradigm In The Twentieth-Century Southern Gothic, Matthew Ryan Pike Oct 2025

The Horror And The Passion: The Christian/Secular Paradigm In The Twentieth-Century Southern Gothic, Matthew Ryan Pike

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The goal of this dissertation is to provide a foundational definition of the southern gothic literary genre. In this analysis, I argue that the core of the southern gothic is a Christian/secular paradigm and that all of the conflict within these narratives is principally grounded in this dichotomy. Not only does this framework provide the best interpretive lens to understand the genre, but it ameliorates the cloud of confusion in the critical scholarship, wherein a wide and fluid array of propositions are advanced on what essentially comprises the southern gothic. I execute this via an interdisciplinary strategy, adopting scholarship and …

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Studi Pembangunan

This study analyzes the monetary reaction function in Indonesia with shocks and the fear of floating phenomenon in the inflation targeting period using a new neoclassical synthesis approach. The unit root test result explains that all variables are stationary or "I(0)", and in the long run, interest rates respond positively to future inflationary (counter-cyclical). Using a predictive performance model, the short-run FLM was chosen to explain the effect of triple shocks on interest rates in Indonesia. In the short run, only fluctuations in world oil prices significantly affect interest rates (counter-cyclical policy). Furthermore, this research has not been able to …

Probation Officers' Experiences Working With Individuals Who Have Antisocial Personality Traits, Katherine Ore Oct 2025

Probation Officers' Experiences Working With Individuals Who Have Antisocial Personality Traits, Katherine Ore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In fulfilling their role of monitoring individuals outside of a prison setting, probation officers may encounter individuals who have antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) or antisocial personality (ASP) traits. Individuals who have ASP traits and are not diagnosed with ASPD are still impacted by recommendations of punishment, higher recidivism rates, and a lack of treatment resources provided. Individuals in the criminal justice system with ASP traits are not a new phenomenon, but there is a lack of research on the probation officers' experience working with these individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine and explore the experiences of probation …

Shared Family Identity And Emotional Abuse From A Childhood Caregiver As Predictors Of Self-Censorship Willingness, Jillian Theryon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Childhood emotional abuse may be underreported and unnoticed. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine whether shared family identity (SFI) with an emotionally abusive childhood caregiver was linked to self-censorship of social and political opinions in adulthood. The study also examined whether this relationship is intensified among those with a strong sense of SFI with that caregiver. Linear multiple regression analysis of survey data collected from 119 participants, recruited through Survey Monkey Audience, revealed that willingness to self-censor was significantly shaped by the interaction between SFI and emotional abuse, especially overcontrol. Although SFI is often seen as …

The Process Of Enduring Prolonged Undiagnosed Ptsd And The Impact Of Treatment Expressed By Women, Kelli Elaine Hudgins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prolonged undiagnosed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been examined from various perspectives and represents a significant medical concern across diverse populations. Research on PTSD often targets specific groups, such as postpartum women or military veterans. This narrow focus in much of the literature tends to obscure the broader impact of prolonged undiagnosed PTSD on the general population, thereby overlooking the critical need to highlight systemic shortcomings that hinder effective interventions and reform. Furthermore, personal narratives detailing the challenges individuals face when seeking help or treatment – factors that contribute to delays in care – and the subsequent effects on their …

The participants were six data architects who had successfully implemented BI architectures in the financial industry in the southwestern United States. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, field notes, and …

Mixed-Methods & Ai For Methodological Literature Reviews, António Pedro Costa, Pablo Burneo, Judita Kasperiuniene Oct 2025

Mixed-Methods & Ai For Methodological Literature Reviews, António Pedro Costa, Pablo Burneo, Judita Kasperiuniene

The Qualitative Report

In the Generative AI (GenAI) era, social researchers have explored different tools for different phases of research projects. Despite AI and GenAI being highly relevant topics in current literature, few researchers have addressed the question of how to explore GenAI tools based on human-AI collaboration to improve the quality of methodological literature reviews. Based on a real project as a sample, “a competence framework for social researchers integrating GenAI”, we propose a detailed analytical model that triangulates evidence from both quantitative and qualitative data analyses. A mixed-methods approach is looked at, with a focus on the qualitative dimension (quant-QUAL). The …

Qualitative Insights Into The Complexity Of Calling: Moving Beyond Quantitative Boundaries, Jeannel King Oct 2025

Qualitative Insights Into The Complexity Of Calling: Moving Beyond Quantitative Boundaries, Jeannel King

The Qualitative Report

Why are deeply personal and lived experiences often reduced to standardized measurements? Calling is one such experience. Although widely recognized as complex, personal, and contextually shaped, the concept of calling has most often been researched through quantitative methods over the past two decades. This study employed qualitative content analysis (QCA) to examine how calling was researched across 267 peer-reviewed journal articles, trace methodological patterns, and consider how those choices influence the field’s conceptualizations of the construct. The analysis integrated deductive coding of methodological features and inductive identification of conceptual themes, refined through abductive synthesis. This hybrid strategy positioned the study …

A Very Positive Review Of Positive Autoethnography: An Introduction To Theory And Practice, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

Emerging from a creative marriage of positive psychology and autoethnography, Freda Gonot-Schoupinsky and Claude-Hélène Mayer (2025) present a wonderful addition to both families with their new book, Positive Autoethnography: An Introduction to Theory and Practice. The authors do an excellent job situating this new methodology in the rich traditions of both foundational areas and present the theoretical and practical qualities of a variety of positive autoethnography derivations. In what might be the most interesting variation of this evolving form of autoethnography is its promise as a form of therapy – a very positive development indeed.
