Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

The results of a large-scale randomized controlled trial of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) on student outcomes and teacher–parent relationships in rural schools are presented. CBC is an indirect service delivery model that addresses concerns shared by teachers and parents about students. In the present study, the intervention was aimed at promoting positive school-related social-behavioral skills and strengthening teacher–parent relationships in rural schools. Participants were 267 students in grades K-3, their parents, and 152 teachers in 45 Midwest rural schools. Results revealed that, on average, improvement among students whose parents and teachers experienced CBC significantly outpaced that of control students in …

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Children’s learning and development are directly and indirectly influenced by teachers’ beliefs and pedagogical strategies toward child behaviors. This cross-sectional study explored elementary preservice teachers’ attitudes and pedagogical strategies for working with hypothetical children demonstrating temperament-based shy, exuberant, and average behaviors in the classroom. A secondary goal was to compare attitudes and pedagogical strategies at the beginning and end of teacher training program. A total of 354 participants responded to three vignettes describing children frequently displaying these behaviors. Results indicated preservice teachers were more likely to use social-learning strategies with shy children and high-powered strategies with exuberant children. Participants were …

Trump, Populism, Fascism, And The Road Ahead, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 2017

Trump, Populism, Fascism, And The Road Ahead, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This review essay offers a discussion of some recent studies that help to explain the election of Donald Trump as president of the USA. The studies examine Trump as “media spectacle,” analyze his support among Tea Partiers, and discuss his backing by the white working class left behind by neoliberalism and global capitalism. Special attention is given to two questions: Is Trump a rightwing populist or closer to a fascist? Relatedly, is Trump a threat to liberal democracy? The essay concludes with some suggestions of how to move beyond Trump.

Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress Jan 2017

Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A social ecological model is applied to the secondary analysis of qualitative data to study the impact of place on rural food access for older adults in West Virginia. The use of a social-ecological model to review the senior’s coded narratives provided a clearer picture of higher impact, upstream levers to address food security for older adults in a rural region. The elderly have restricted access to food in rural West Virginia because of an indirect relationship with place that acts through the social ecological domains of the built environment, macrosocial factors, stressors, the natural environment, and social support. The …

The Science Of Science Education: Zoel García De Galdeano, Mathematics Instruction, And The Progress Of Spain, Óscar Iván Useche Jan 2017

The Science Of Science Education: Zoel García De Galdeano, Mathematics Instruction, And The Progress Of Spain, Óscar Iván Useche

Decimonónica

In 1891, Zoel García de Galdeano, a mathematics professor at the Universidad de Zaragoza, embarked on a quixotic enterprise. Seeking to make the most important advances in mathematics available in Spain, he founded the first specialized journal of this field in the country, El Progreso Matemático, serving simultaneously as its editor, contributor, and manager. The journal also provided a space to criticize the backwardness of education and the absence of local scientific developments on the Iberian Peninsula. Three comprehensive essays authored by García de Galdeano and published in the journal from 1893 to 1894, and from 1899 to 1900, …

Women And Huevos: Matters Of Food, Religion, And Gender In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “Los Huevos Arrefalfados”, Kate Good Jan 2017

Women And Huevos: Matters Of Food, Religion, And Gender In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “Los Huevos Arrefalfados”, Kate Good

Decimonónica

“Los huevos arrefalfados” (1890) forms part of a body of short stories on domestic violence published by Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), yet it has received scant critical attention.1 As Margot Versteeg observes, the author’s short stories reflect a changing perspective on gender violence, evolving from more reserved to more outspoken in their condemnation of such treatment of women (137). The publication of “Huevos” in 1890 marks a point of inflection in this subset of Pardo Bazán’s work; it portrays neither the strictly passive victim of earlier texts, nor the more fully independent female seen in later ones. Instead, “Huevos” …

Introduction To The Science Of Virtue, Why Positive Psychology Matters To The Church, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

My students look at me funny when I mention 1980, as if we are studying ancient history. It doesn’t seem that long ago to me, but most of them were ten years shy of being born. Mount St. Helens erupted that year, gifting my classmates and me with an inch of ash for our college graduation day in Portland, Oregon. Rubik’s Cube captured the world’s attention and more of my free time than I care to admit. And a concerned couple at my church approached my wife, Lisa, and me a few weeks before we packed our U-Haul for graduate …

Due to lower female incidence, estimates of exogenous and endogenous hormonal factors in head and neck cancers (HNCs, comprising cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx) among women have been inconsistent and unable to account for key HNC risk factors. We pooled data from 11 studies from Europe, North America, and Japan. Analysis included 1572 HNC female cases and 4343 controls. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) estimates and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking. Lower risk was observed in women who used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) …

A History Of The Participatory Map, Jo Guldi

History Faculty Publications

This article tells, for the first time, the story of the history of the participatory map: that is, the many-to-many map-making techniques that most people are familiar with through smartphone apps and Google maps. Archival research in previously untapped archives traces the origins of participatory mapping in subaltern conversations around the world, its embrace in the modern academy and development circles, its place in the World Bank, and its conversion to online formats like Google Maps and Open Street Map. The story begins in surprising places, as international networks in the 1970s began experimenting with many-to-many mapping, their members spanning …

Why Diversity Fails: Social Dominance Theory And The Entrenchment Of Racial Inequality, Erika K. Wilson Jan 2017

Why Diversity Fails: Social Dominance Theory And The Entrenchment Of Racial Inequality, Erika K. Wilson

Faculty Articles

This Article suggests that while recognizing the ways in which implicit bias hinders diversity efforts is important, an exclusive focus on implicit bias is incomplete. Implicit bias with its' predominate focus on the unconscious behavior of individual actors, obscures the complexity of racial exclusion today. It does so by failing to account for the institutionalized and systemic nature of modern-day racism and racial exclusion. Indeed, modern day racial exclusion is often the product of systemic oppression that involves domination by one group which results in the subordination of other groups, not just the aggregate of individual biases.

Essays In Labor Economics, Alexandra Roulet Jan 2017

Essays In Labor Economics, Alexandra Roulet

Dissertation Awards

This dissertation consists of three independent essays. The first essay analyses the relationship between Schumpeterian growth and subjective well-being. The second essay investigates whether more generous unemployment insurance (UI) leads job seekers to be more selective in the job they are looking for. In particular, it estimates the elasticity of the reservation wage and of other dimensions of job selectivity with respect to the potential duration of benefits. The third essay studies whether there remains a causal nonpecuniary effect of job loss on health when the income shock is well insured by UI. It looks at whether exogenous job losses …

Growing Portland: Not Whether, But How, Richard Barringer Phd, Joseph Mcdonnell Phd Jan 2017

Growing Portland: Not Whether, But How, Richard Barringer Phd, Joseph Mcdonnell Phd

Faculty Publications

In the 400 years since European settlement, Portland has survived the ravages of war, invasion, pestilence, conflagration, and economic depression and recession. Once a renowned manufacturing, trade, and shipping center, it now enjoys what might be called a post-industrial renaissance as a vibrant center for the arts, education, entertainment, and banking, legal, and medical services; and is frequently cited as one of America’s best small cities. As a result, Portland is growing today and is positioned for more growth.

The question, then, is not whether Portland will grow, but how well it will grow; or, how best to manage the …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

“Don’t say God is silent if your Bible is closed.” - Church Sign This project aimed to encourage and enable a small group class at Mount Moriah Baptist Church to adopt meditative and contemplative prayer as a framework for a coping mechanism. In practicing this type of prayer life, participants anticipated to receive the benefit of being better able to cope with stressors of life. Utilizing a small group study, Lectio Divina, biblical examples, breathing techniques and various surveys, participants were enabled to experience a deeper interaction with Scripture, aided by the ministry of the Holy Spirit, to hear God …

Engaging Millennials: The Quest To Revive Their Participation And Commitment At Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Gastonia, Nc, Kimberly Moore

Doctor of Ministry Projects

There are times when a church can have the look of success, but the zeal of that ministry is slowly diminishing. The older generation continues to do their best to keep ministry viable and moving, but there is a younger generation who does not see the importance of committing to anything beyond the Sunday morning experience. Through a series of Bible studies, sermons, outreach and moments of fellowship, this project engages the millennial generation and discovers ways to move them toward some level of commitment and participation within the Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Gastonia, NC. It is becoming more and …

Preconception Health Knowledge Among Undergraduate Women, Ashley Mae Paulsen Jan 2017

Preconception Health Knowledge Among Undergraduate Women, Ashley Mae Paulsen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Preconception health is a woman’s health before she becomes pregnant. It means knowing and understanding how preexisting health conditions and risk factors could affect a woman or her unborn child if she becomes pregnant (Office on Women’s Health, 2010). This study examined undergraduate students’ knowledge of recommended preconception health practices. A paper survey was distributed to general education classes in health, sociology, and family consumer science. This 33-item survey assessed demographics, barriers to practicing recommended preconception health behaviors, and knowledge of preconception health practices. Analyses included frequencies, independent t-test, and ANOVA. Respondents had a mean score of 42.85 (2.68) on …

“Let’S Be Clear”: Exploring The Role Of Transparency Within The Organization, Maxwell Salazar Jan 2017

“Let’S Be Clear”: Exploring The Role Of Transparency Within The Organization, Maxwell Salazar

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In the wake of corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom, organizational transparency has received increasing attention in the media and socio-political discourse. Widespread commercial fraud has shaken the trust of employees and consumers alike. Transparency, or the lack thereof, is often cited as the underlying cause of this debacle (Edelman, 2007). The term transparency has now become commonplace across a broad range of disciplines (e.g. public relations, accounting, leadership, political science, and economics). While this cross-discipline interest serves to highlight the relevance of the construct, it hinders a consensual definition.

Mexican Dance Group: Breaking Barriers One Tap At A Time (Chapter In Emerging Issues And Trends In Education), Tatiana Cevallos

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "With a growing number of Hispanic students in schools (Díaz-Rico & Weed, 2014; Oregon Department of Education, 2012), many educators wonder how to make the school community more accessible to Hispanic parents (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Gorski & Pothini, 2014; Valdés, 1996; Wink, 2005). The dance group described in this chapter demonstrates a natural way in which one teacher has accomplished Hispanic parental accessibility and, in doing so, positively impacted her school community. Rosa Floyd, the director of Nellie Muir’s Dance Group, has been teaching in Spanish-English bilingual classrooms for more than nineteen years. She came from Mexico …
