Embracing Our First Responder Role As Academics - With Inspiration From Langston Hughes, Angela Mae Kupenda
Embracing Our First Responder Role As Academics - With Inspiration From Langston Hughes, Angela Mae Kupenda
Journal Articles
In the midst of the post-2016 political crisis, our role as academics is that of First Responders. In physical crises, like a fire, First Responders play an important role. They intentionally put themselves in harm’s way to fulfill an overarching purpose of helping others, even at their own risk. They strategically prepare, train, and work for years to prepare for this role in the midst of crisis. As academics who care about equality, we are First Responders.

The Punishment Marketplace: Competing For Capitalized Power In Locally Controlled Immigration Enforcement, Daniel L. Stageman
The Punishment Marketplace: Competing For Capitalized Power In Locally Controlled Immigration Enforcement, Daniel L. Stageman
Publications and Research
Neoliberal economics play a significant role in US social organization, imposing market logics on public services and driving the cultural valorization of free market ideology. The neoliberal ‘project of inequality’ is upheld by an authoritarian system of punishment built around the social control of the underclass—among them unauthorized immigrants. This work lays out the theory of the punishment marketplace: a conceptualization of how US systems of punishment both enable the neoliberal project of inequality, and are themselves subject to market colonization. The theory describes the rescaling of federal authority to local centers of political power. Criminal justice policy activism by …
The Long-Arm's Inappropriate Embrace, Lynda Wray Black
The Long-Arm's Inappropriate Embrace, Lynda Wray Black
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Arguably, the heart balm torts have outlived their relevance in a society where marriage is no longer a necessary imprimatur for intimate relations, and where broken hearts and failed marriages are the statistical norm. A state’s resolute rejection of the heart balm torts in principle as well as applied to modern domestic relations mores need be checked neither by Constitutional protections of marriage nor by the need for uniformity among sister states. Therefore, one state need not and must not transport its domestic relations public policy across state lines. Mississippi’s expansive jurisdictional embrace of nonresidents, John Daly and Anna …
The Ways Of A Judge And On Appeal, Kermit V. Lipez
The Ways Of A Judge And On Appeal, Kermit V. Lipez
Maine Law Review
What do you do when your judicial hero, the author of two important books on appellate judging, was for many years your neighbor, friend, colleague, and mentor? You revel in your good fortune, and you share your admiration for his books. Judge Coffin’s long involvement in the political world contributed significantly to a primary focus of his two books on appellate judging, The Ways of a Judge, published in 1980, and On Appeal, published in 1994. As a political organizer, a candidate for public office, a Congressman, and an administrator in a federal agency, Judge Coffin understood his accountability to …

Readiness For Inter-Institutional Collaboration: A Path Forward For Online Learning, Robert Arthur Paulson Phd, Shirley Ann Freed
Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea
An environment conducive to inter-institutional collaboration greater utilizes intellectual and structural assets for the good of all in a growing learning community. As small colleges and universities struggle to maintain financial viability many have recognized the positive impact a collaborative environment has for all aspects of the institution. The leaders in this transition from autonomous to collaborative have been librarians and their use of technology to share databases and other assets. Organizations like the Concordia University System and The Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance have been sharing structural and intellectual assets to reduce costs and risks in offering online …

Treatment And Moderator Effects In A Randomized Controlled Trial Of Culturally Informed And Flexible Family Treatment For Adolescents (Ciffta): An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Stress, Acculturation, And Parenting Practices, Marc Puccinelli
Open Access Dissertations
The present study investigated how acculturation, acculturative stress, and change in acculturative stress impact parenting practices among 141 Hispanic families randomly assigned to either Culturally Informed and Flexible Family Treatment for Adolescents (CIFFTA) or Individual Treatment As Usual (ITAU). Data were obtained from a parent study investigating the efficacy of CIFFTA vs. ITAU in addressing internalizing and externalizing disorders, and preventing future drug use and risky sexual behavior among 200 at-risk adolescents 11-14 years of age. A series of mixed model ANOVAs were conducted to investigate how Hispanic stress and parenting practices change pre to post-treatment (four months post-baseline), and …

Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Political Animal: Florence Brown Cotnam And The Arkansas Women's Suffrage Movement, Jared Barton Craig
Theses and Dissertations
Florence Brown Cotnam was a suffragist, war worker, clubwoman, one-time congressional candidate, and an active member of the Democratic Party. She entered the Women’s Suffrage Movement when nothing got done, especially in the American South that opposed equal suffrage on racial and social grounds. The Arkansas General Assembly stalled legislation. Equally daunting were the anti-suffrage arguments were rampant, both in government corridors and in communities across the state. Cotnam was uniquely suited to change that. She remade the perception of a suffragist through a robust publicity campaign, linked the movement to World War I, made suffrage a patriotic issue, countered …

Rebellions Are Built On Hope: Joining Forces To Support Oer In A Restrictive Institutional Environment, Aimee Denoyelles, John Raible, Sarah A. Norris, Rich Gause, Penny Beile
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Librarians and instructional designers (IDs) from a university in the U.S. will describe the partnership formed to promote no-cost textbook solutions (OER, library-sourced) in the face of a restrictive environment. The institution is divided in two tiers: the President's Office, which oversees non-academic functions such as Business Services, and the Provost's Office, which is responsible for teaching and learning. This creates an inherent tension concerning course materials and revenue, troubling the conception of education as a fundamentally shared practice. Our group aimed to promote change at the university level, while also collaborating to facilitate the efforts of faculty.
Typically, the …

Democracy, Local Election, And Political Dynasty In Indonesian Politics, Dede Mariana, Luthfi Hamzah Husin
Democracy, Local Election, And Political Dynasty In Indonesian Politics, Dede Mariana, Luthfi Hamzah Husin
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Liberal democracy has been chosen as a model and political mechanism after Soeharto era. One of its triumphs is local election that becomes a political instrument of democratisation at regional level. Many scholars believe that local democratisation in Indonesia enables local people to involve more actively in the political process. This political exercise in some cases, however, results in a paradoxical impact on Indonesian political realm today, as some practices of political dynasty frequently emerge. Using participatory point of view, this article aims to discuss why such political dynasty can possibly emerge within an electoral system, what factors cause it …

Architectural Apprenticeship: A Case Study Of Exemplary Practice, Thomas Stephen Szumlic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to describe the nature of the architectural apprenticeship experience from a curricular, instructional, social, and transformative perspective to help interns move from novice status to entry-level expertise in architectural practice. The study examined the apprenticeship experience from a holistic perspective to develop a better understanding of the architectural internship program. To meet the study purpose and inquiry, a case study research design was used to explore and describe the nature of the apprenticeship experience from the perspectives of three stakeholder groups: the interns, the mentors, and the members of the community of practice (CoP). …

Nepal has an extreme altitudinal range from 60–8850m with heterogeneous topography and distinct climatic zones. The country is considered a biodiversity hotspot, with nearly a quarter of the land area located in protected areas. Nepal and the surrounding Himalayan region are particularly vulnerable to climate change because of their abrupt ecological and climatic transitions. Tens of millions of people rely on the region’s ecosystem services, and observed and modeled warming trends predict increased climate extremes in the Himalayas. To study the ecological impacts of climate change in Nepal and inform adaptation planning, we review the literature on past, present, and …
