Student Surveillance, Racial Inequalities, And Implicit Racial Bias, Jason P. Nance Jan 2017

Student Surveillance, Racial Inequalities, And Implicit Racial Bias, Jason P. Nance

Emory Law Journal

In the wake of high-profile incidents of school violence, school officials have increased their reliance on a host of surveillance measures. Paradoxically, such practices can foster hostile environments that may lead to even more disorder and dysfunction. These practices may also contribute to the so-called ¿school-to-prison pipeline¿ by pushing more students out of school and into the juvenile justice system. This Article presents data on school surveillance practices, including an original empirical analysis of restricted data released by the U.S. Department of Education after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This Article then turns to a discussion of the …

The Life Of Donald Mcgavran: Becoming A Professor, Gary L. Mcintosh

Great Commission Research Journal

As McGavran’s missionary career in India came to an end, publication of The Bridges of God opened new doors for research, teaching, and writing. The years 1955–1965 found McGavran moving from a missionary career to that of a professor and founding The Institute of Church Growth. In Eugene, Oregon, he met and befriended Methodist missionary Alan R. Tippett who became a partner in the spread of Church Growth Thought during the 1960s and 70s.

Seeking Social Capital And Expertise In A Newly-Formed Research Community: A Co-Author Analysis, Christine E. Forte Jan 2017

Seeking Social Capital And Expertise In A Newly-Formed Research Community: A Co-Author Analysis, Christine E. Forte

Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory study applies social network analysis techniques to existing, publicly available data to understand collaboration patterns within the co-author network of a federally-funded, interdisciplinary research program. The central questions asked: What underlying social capital structures can be determined about a group of researchers from bibliometric data and other publicly available existing data? What are ways social network tools characterize the interdisciplinarity or cross-disciplinarity of co-author teams? The names of 411 grantees were searched in the Web of Science indexing database; author information from the WoS search results resulted in a 191-member co-author network. Research domains were included as attribute …

Social Violence: The Role Of Gun Culture, Binod Kumar Jan 2017

Social Violence: The Role Of Gun Culture, Binod Kumar

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

The roots of violence are many because they sprout from diverse sources. Often the sources interact and confound to make violence a complex societal phenomenon. In the context of this chapter, violence is defined as intents and/or acts of doing harm to an individual or a group of people. Violence is thus a very broad term and encompasses numerous social and political grievances. The sources of violence can be broadly classified as natural, social, political, commercial, and technological. The classification of the sources, their respective roots, and associated impacts are presented in Table 4.1. Each of the sources of violence …

Speaking Truth To Power: Stand-Up Comedians As Sophists, Jesters, Public Intellectuals And Activists, Jillian Belanger Jan 2017

Speaking Truth To Power: Stand-Up Comedians As Sophists, Jesters, Public Intellectuals And Activists, Jillian Belanger

Open Access Dissertations

Stand-up comedians are rhetors who use humor as a rhetorical tool to inform and persuade mass audiences in the classical rhetorical tradition. In this dissertation, I work to recover the rhetorical motives of stand-up comedy, just as rhetoric and composition scholars before me have reread and recovered the legacy of the Sophists. To that end, I align stand-up comedians first with the historical heritage of Sophists and jesters, and then with the more contemporary tradition of public intellectuals and social activists. Using excerpts from stand-up comedy performances, I demonstrate how stand-up comedians are able to persuade and educate with humor. …

Model Continuation High Schools: Social-Cognitive Promotive Factors That Contribute To Re-Engaging At-Risk Students Emotionally, Behaviorally, And Cognitively Towards Graduation, Becky G. Sumbera Jan 2017

Model Continuation High Schools: Social-Cognitive Promotive Factors That Contribute To Re-Engaging At-Risk Students Emotionally, Behaviorally, And Cognitively Towards Graduation, Becky G. Sumbera

Theses and Dissertations

Although school dropout rate remains a significant social and economic concern to our nation and has generated considerable research, little attention by scholars has examined the phenomena of re-engagement in effective school context and its developmental influences on at-risk students expectancy for success and task-value towards graduation. Given the multifaceted interactions of school context and the complex developmental needs of at-risk students, there were dual purposes for this three-phase, two-method qualitative study that addressed the literature concerns. The first purpose was to explore and identify policies, programs, and practices perceived as being most effective in re-engaging at-risk students behaviorally, emotionally, …

Virtual Civic Engagement: Exploring Technology, Secondary Social Studies, And Problem Based Learning With Tpack, Brett Schneider Jan 2017

Virtual Civic Engagement: Exploring Technology, Secondary Social Studies, And Problem Based Learning With Tpack, Brett Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

Sociological and cultural analysts have noted the reticence of public secondary schooling to recognize and build academic activities around the participatory culture in which adolescents are so readily involved (Jenkins, Purushotma, Weigel, Clinton & Robison, 2009). Despite the Common Core State Standards having required students to demonstrate they can maximize technology to perform a range of skills involving targeted specialized research, organized writing, and visually intentional presentation (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices [NGA], Council of Chief State School Officers [CCSSO], 2010), very few classrooms have followed through. The avoidance and or failure of these educational technology integrations in …

Beyond Super Heroes And Talking Animals: Social Justice In Graphic Novels In Education, David Greenfield

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of this study was to investigate, document, and understand the reasons that educators who use graphic novels in their classrooms choose to use them, rather than traditional text. Secondary goals were to identify the classes they teach, and to identify commonalities and shared best practices. Interviews were scheduled, to provide the with data about learning objectives, students’ reactions, the books they use, types of assignments, the criteria that they use to define the critical elements for success in their classes, as well as the instructors’ own relationships with graphic novels. The phenomenological methodology was determined to be …

Within these four topics I will cover: investment capital, poverty, higher education, internet access, alcohol addiction, suicide rates, obesity, diabetes, and other socioeconomic indicators. Once this is accomplished I will assess the social and economic impact of gaming on Barona, Viejas, and Sycuan and include the possible implications to heal historical trauma …

Cities, Inclusion And Exactions, Audrey Mcfarlane, Randall K. Johnson Jan 2017

Cities, Inclusion And Exactions, Audrey Mcfarlane, Randall K. Johnson

Articles

Cities across the country are adopting mandatory inclusionary zoning. Yet, consensus about the appropriate constitutional standard to measure the propriety of mandatory inclusionary zoning has not been fully reached. Under one doctrinal lens, inclusionary zoning is a valid land use regulation adopted to ensure a proper balance of housing within the jurisdiction. Under another doctrinal lens, challengers seek to characterize inclusionary zoning as an exaction, a discretionary condition subject to a heightened standard of review addressing the specific negative impact caused by an individual project on the supply of affordable housing in a jurisdiction. Drawing from the experience of Baltimore, …

Growth And Spawning Dynamics Of Southern Flounder In The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Morgan M. Corey, Robert T. Leaf, Nancy Brown-Peterson, Mark S. Peterson, Samuel D. Clardy, David Dippold Jan 2017

Growth And Spawning Dynamics Of Southern Flounder In The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Morgan M. Corey, Robert T. Leaf, Nancy Brown-Peterson, Mark S. Peterson, Samuel D. Clardy, David Dippold

Faculty Publications

Southern Flounder Paralichthys lethostigma is the most commonly harvested flatfish in the north-central Gulf of Mexico (GOM), yet knowledge of this species’ growth and reproduction is limited for the Mississippi region. Given the offshore spawning migrations and likely mixing between state-managed units of the GOM Southern Flounder stock, small-scale environmental influences may constitute a major driver of life history dynamics during early life residency in nearshore estuaries. Therefore, estimates of local demographic characteristics are needed for effective fishery management. Here, we describe critical life history traits of Southern Flounder, including estimation of growth rates and maturity. The three-parameter von Bertalanffy …

The conclusion of this literature review includes recommendations for future action and education policies based on the research reviewed.

Understanding Perceptions Of Barriers To International, Interdisciplinary Scientific Teamwork And The Expansion Of Mexican Oil Palm Plantations, Erin Pischke Jan 2017

Understanding Perceptions Of Barriers To International, Interdisciplinary Scientific Teamwork And The Expansion Of Mexican Oil Palm Plantations, Erin Pischke

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Understanding the multiple drivers of environmental change is essential for devising strategies for overcoming impacts and planning for the future. Anthropogenic causes and physical impacts of such environmental changes are not fixed in space; thus, it is necessary to conduct international research to solve such problems by integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. My dissertation research examines the public perceptions of socioecological impacts of oil palm production and uncovers barriers that international, interdisciplinary teams face when studying such impacts. In one chapter, I present research that identifies challenges that interdisciplinary researchers are confronted with when working in an international setting. Findings show …

Journalist And Hoaxer: William Francis Mannix And The Long History Of Faked News, Madelyn Kay Duhon Jan 2017

Journalist And Hoaxer: William Francis Mannix And The Long History Of Faked News, Madelyn Kay Duhon

LSU Master's Theses

William Francis Mannix was a colossal hoaxer, journalist, criminal, and literary forger. He most famously fabricated “Memoirs of Li Hung Chang” (1913); sent sensational dispatches from Cuba during the Spanish American War that were published in the New York Times, Philadelphia Press, and other reputable papers; and is suspected of forging love letters written by Abraham Lincoln, published by the Atlantic Monthly in 1929. Mannix is representative of a type of journalist at the turn of the nineteenth century. At that time elements of the press were striving for professional respectability and embracing ethical standards. Historians have held these publications …

Investigating The Utility Of Rapid Assessment Process For Environmental Development Work Of Peace Corps Master’S International Students, Mariah Maggio Jan 2017

Investigating The Utility Of Rapid Assessment Process For Environmental Development Work Of Peace Corps Master’S International Students, Mariah Maggio

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Peace Corps Master’s International (PCMI) students engage in international development when they assume the role of Volunteer and graduate researcher. Michigan Technological University had the largest PCMI program in the country, with many Volunteer assignments involving environmental problem solving opportunities. Unfortunately some PCMI students have experienced “failed projects,” something not un-common to international development approaches. This research design supports institutional interdisciplinary efforts aimed at preparing PCMI students to engage in productive community development that avoids historic pitfalls of international development efforts. In order to contribute to this effort, the Rapid Assessment Process (RAP) approach was identified as a potential tool …

Elite Formation In The Higher Education Systems Of Ireland And The Uk: Measuring, Comparing And Decomposing Longitudinal Patterns Of Cabinet Members., Sharon Feeney, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke Jan 2017

Elite Formation In The Higher Education Systems Of Ireland And The Uk: Measuring, Comparing And Decomposing Longitudinal Patterns Of Cabinet Members., Sharon Feeney, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke

Articles

The role of higher education systems in the formation and reproduction of governing elites, and their countervailing potential for the creation of a more egalitarian, or meritocratic, society has been an enduring subject of concern, debate and research. Many of these debates are made all the more difficult by our inability to directly compare elite formation systems within and between countries and over time. To resolve these problems, this paper employs elite formation quantitative indices to directly and transparently compare elite formation systems, namely the role of higher education systems in political elite formation over three quarters of a century …

A Study On Change And Determinants Of South Koreans' Perceptions Of Unification, Seong Koo Ham Jan 2017

A Study On Change And Determinants Of South Koreans' Perceptions Of Unification, Seong Koo Ham

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

South Koreans’ interest in and aspirations for unification have decreased recently. This decrease of desires for unification is one of the obstacles to achieve unification. This study analyzes the change of South Koreans’ perceptions of unification and examines various factors that affect those perceptions toward unification. I use unification perceptions survey data from 2007 to 2014 collected by the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies Seoul National University.

The dependent variables of this study are perceptions of the necessity of unification and the possibility of unification. Independent variables are classified into four types. They are expected benefit factors, the political …

The Effects Of Land Use Deregulations In The Capitol Region On Gross Regional Domestic Product In South Korea, Youngchul Kim Jan 2017

The Effects Of Land Use Deregulations In The Capitol Region On Gross Regional Domestic Product In South Korea, Youngchul Kim

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

South Korea has implemented strong land use regulations controlling the growth of the capitol region (Seoul, and around areas) in order to encourage balanced regional development between the capitol area and the non-capitol area. However, there are ongoing debates about the relationship between the regulatory policies and the balanced regional development.

The purpose of this study is to examine the extent of the effect that the land use deregulation in the capitol region has on growth of both regions. To address this question, I use a difference-in-differences model to empirically analyze how the land use deregulation in the capitol region …

Reducing Children's Behavior Problems Through Social Capital: A Causal Assessment, Ruth N.López Turley, Adam Gamoran, Alyn Turner Mccarty, Rachel Fish Jan 2017

Reducing Children's Behavior Problems Through Social Capital: A Causal Assessment, Ruth N.López Turley, Adam Gamoran, Alyn Turner Mccarty, Rachel Fish

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

Behavior problems among young children have serious detrimental effects on short and long-term educational outcomes. An especially promising prevention strategy may be one that focuses on strengthening the relationships among families in schools, or social capital. However, empirical research on social capital has been constrained by conceptual and causal ambiguity. This study attempts to construct a more focused conceptualization of social capital and aims to determine the causal effects of social capital on children's behavior. Using data from a cluster randomized trial of 52 elementary schools, we apply several multilevel models to assess the causal relationship, including intent to treat …

Content-Based Instruction (Cbi) For The Social Future: A Recommendation For Critical Content-Based Language Instruction (Ccbi), Shinji Sato, Atsushi Hasegawa, Yuri Kumagai, Uichi Kamiyoshi Jan 2017

Content-Based Instruction (Cbi) For The Social Future: A Recommendation For Critical Content-Based Language Instruction (Ccbi), Shinji Sato, Atsushi Hasegawa, Yuri Kumagai, Uichi Kamiyoshi

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

In this article, we seek to reconceptualize content-based instruction (CBI) curricula and practices from a critical perspective. Further, we propose developing criticality as an essential component of CBI, advocating for an approach we call critical content-based instruction (CCBI). While the importance of CBI has long been recognized, previous discussions predominantly focused on its effectiveness for language learning (and content learning to a lesser degree), and overlooked its fundamental linkage and relevance to broader educational missions. In order to fully maximize the potential of CBI and envision language education as integral to the advancement of society, we argue that a critical …
