Is Play Disappearing? Instances Of No-Play In Children's Neighbourhoods: Implications For Learning, Development And Curriculum, Doireann O'Connor, Tracy Treasure, Christine Robinson, M Mccormack, V O'Rourke

Education Conference Papers

This paper presents data from the Irish Neighbourhood Play Study that explored children’s engagement in play. The data raises concerns around recorded instances of no-play in play environments. The instances of no-play were recorded during peak play time periods including weekend and afterschool hours. This data raises the critical question: Are today’s children being afforded sufficient time to play? Both the quality of opportunity to play and the quantity of time afforded to children to engage in play are important factors in children’s learning and development (Fisher, Hirsh-Pasek, Golinkoff, Singer & Berk, 2011; Whitebread, 2012). The data from the Irish …

Race, Culture & Abuse Of Persons With Disabilities, Elizabeth P. Cramer, Y. Joon Choi, Avina I. Ross Jan 2017

Race, Culture & Abuse Of Persons With Disabilities, Elizabeth P. Cramer, Y. Joon Choi, Avina I. Ross

Social Work Publications

This chapter will explore how race and culture influence the lives of persons with disabilities who are experiencing abuse. The discussion will be framed by an intersectional lens and will be informed by cultural humility and critical race theory. Practitioners need to remain open to the idea that they cannot and will not know all there is to know about any given culture, and they should be open to hearing about their clients’ understanding and experiences of culture. Rather than knowing certain pieces of “knowledge” about a cultural group, it is more important to understand what pieces of culture the …

Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah Jan 2017

Creating A Culture Of Philanthropy, Lindsay Cavanah

PADM 656 Fund Development for the Nonprofit Sector

There are many elements to consider when creating a culture of philanthropy. First, one must acknowledge the definition of philanthropy. Philanthropy is defined as “the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 1). Although this is true, an organization which promotes a culture of philanthropy may view philanthropy as its broader definition of “an effort to promote human welfare” (Philanthropy, n.d., para 2). A culture of philanthropy is a newly perceived way for organizations to view the process of securing resources (Gibson, 2016). There are four components on which a …

The Emerging Role Of Universities In Collective Impact Initiatives For Community Benefit, Jason Smith, Lynn E. Pelco, Alex Rooke Jan 2017

The Emerging Role Of Universities In Collective Impact Initiatives For Community Benefit, Jason Smith, Lynn E. Pelco, Alex Rooke

Division of Community Engagement Resources

Universities are increasing their efforts to more clearly demonstrate their social value. This article illustrates how higher education administrators can incorporate collective impact partnerships in their community benefit strategies. The article explores two of the more familiar paradigms for community benefit—community engagement and anchor institution. Collective impact principles and practices are then presented. Finally, a case study provides a tangible example of how one university’s role in a collective impact initiative transitioned in response to the community. We end the article with ten takeaways and an invitation for higher education administrators to identify their own learning and action steps that …

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Clean cooking has emerged as a major concern for global health and development because of the enormous burden of disease caused by traditional cookstoves and fires. The World Health Organization has developed new indoor air quality guidelines that few homes will be able to achieve without replacing traditional methods with modern clean cooking technologies, including fuels and stoves. However, decades of experience with improved stove programs indicate that the challenge of modernizing cooking in impoverished communities includes a complex, multi-sectoral set of problems that require implementation research. The National Institutes of Health, in partnership with several government agencies and the …

Community, Commons, And Degrowth At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Joshua Lockyer Jan 2017

Community, Commons, And Degrowth At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Joshua Lockyer

Faculty Publications - Behavioral Sciences

For centuries, intentional communities of various sorts have been formed to experiment with alternative socio-cultural and economic models. As we enter the Anthropocene and find ourselves in a world challenged to create a post-carbon economy that is no longer reliant on endless growth, such models are in greater demand than ever. Since the mid-1990s, hundreds of ecovillages around the world have been experimenting with ways to achieve prosperity without growth. Linking to three transition discourses, this article uses ongoing ethnographic research to describe how one intentional community-Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in northeast Missouri, USA-is forging such models by cultivating cooperative cultural …

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this qualitative dissertation study was to examine the lived experience and meaning making of challenges, benefits, satisfaction, and professional sustainability for the advanced practice provider in the burn surgery specialty service. The problem addressed was the knowledge gap resulting from a lack of literature describing aspects of the advanced practice provider role in the burn specialty. An interpretive phenomenological analysis, informed by the philosophy of Dr. Martin Heidegger, was undertaken. Participants were solicited from the American Burn Association Advanced Practice Provider (APP) special interest group site. The results provided a thick description of the lived experience of …

Suicide Prevention In The Non-Psychiatric Hospital Setting: A Nurse Education Process, Terry Bird Jan 2017

Suicide Prevention In The Non-Psychiatric Hospital Setting: A Nurse Education Process, Terry Bird

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background/Purpose. Numerous studies indicate that nurses and other healthcare professionals receive little or no suicide-related education or training. Unfavorable attitudes about suicide can also negatively influence caregiver behaviors and impact patient care. Evaluations of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) as a gatekeeper training intervention consistently demonstrate enhanced knowledge, more favorable attitudes, and increased intervention skills. This project aimed to conduct a small-scale pilot of ASIST for hospital nurses, effect suicide education policies, and prevent suicide sentinel events at the project site.

Design. A single comparison group pre/post testing design was used.

Methods. A combination of purposive and network sampling …

"Policy Is What We Make Of It": An Interpretive Study Of Governance In An Urban Watershed, Aritree Samanta Jan 2017

"Policy Is What We Make Of It": An Interpretive Study Of Governance In An Urban Watershed, Aritree Samanta

ETD Archive

This study explores the governance of an urban watershed using a combination of interpretive approach and resilience framework. The key idea within resilience and social ecological systems (SESs) discourse is to link 'human systems' (e.g. communities, society, economy) with 'natural systems' (e.g. ecosystems, biophysical elements) and to understand the interconnections and feedbacks between these systems. Under resilience thinking SESs (e.g. urban environmental) are viewed as complex adaptive systems, therefore, adaptive governance is key for maintaining long-term sustainability of these systems. With this study, I examine the case of the Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio, an urban watershed with legacy pollution …

Recognising Birth Children As Social Actors In The Foster-Care Process: Retrospective Accounts From Biological Children Of Foster-Carers In Ireland, David Williams Jan 2017

Recognising Birth Children As Social Actors In The Foster-Care Process: Retrospective Accounts From Biological Children Of Foster-Carers In Ireland, David Williams

Articles

While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of fostering, limited research has been published on the experiences of the biological children of foster-carers (Younes and Harp, 2007; Sutton and Stack, 2013). Literature that exists identifies increased recognition of the importance of birth children’s contribution to successful foster-care placements and the prevention of placement breakdown (Kalland and Sinkonnen, 2001; Hojer et al., 2013). This paper reports findings from an interpretivist study that explored the retrospective experiences of fifteen adult birth children of foster-carers (aged between eighteen and twenty-eight years) in Ireland. Using semi-structured interviews, birth children’s experiences of fostering …
