Passion For Teaching: Self-Efficacy Of Elementary Special Education Teachers Who Have Persisted In The Special Education Teaching Field For At Least 5 Years., Lisa Diane Stewart

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenology study was to gather perceptions of elementary general curriculum special education teachers who have persisted in the special education teaching profession past the 5-year mark. Based on Bandura’s (1977) Social Cognitive Concept of Self-Efficacy Theory, this study sought to understand self-efficacy in elementary general curriculum special education teachers who have remained in special education for at least 5 years. Lived experiences of nine elementary general curriculum special education teachers were gathered through three in-depth interviews. Follow-up interviews provided rich, thick description and member checking was utilized to triangulate the data.

Training Us Health Care Professionals On Human Trafficking: Where Do We Go From Here?, Clydette Powell, Kirsten Dickins, Hanni Stoklosa

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Some 21 million adults and children are labor-trafficked or sex-trafficked through force, fraud, or coercion. In recognition of the interface between trafficking victims and the healthcare setting, over the last 10 years there has been a notable increase in training of health care professionals (HCPs) on human trafficking (HT) and its health implications. Many organizations have developed curricula and offered training in various clinical settings. However, methods and content of this education on trafficking vary widely, and there is little evaluation of the impact of the training. The goal of this study was to assess the gaps and strengths in …

Trinidad & Tobago : Hiv Epidemic, Madison Caldwell Jan 2017

Trinidad & Tobago : Hiv Epidemic, Madison Caldwell

Global Public Health

Trinidad and Tobago are twin islands located in the Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. In the recent years since about 1990, citizens of this country have been greatly affected by the HIV epidemic. HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus and is spread through infected seman, blood, or vaginal fluids usually through sexual intercourse. As this virus continues to progress in the body, it will eventually turn into AIDS, which stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Once HIV progresses to AIDS, the outcome is ultimately fatal, hence why there is a dire need to promote awareness and methods of intervention to …

The Rise Of Technology And Its Influence On Labor Market Outcomes, Maja K. Thomas Jan 2017

The Rise Of Technology And Its Influence On Labor Market Outcomes, Maja K. Thomas

Gettysburg Economic Review

Technological progress has significantly changed the inputs and production processes utilized by firms. Such shifts have led to warnings throughout the past few decades that substantial numbers of jobs, particularly things belonging to the middle class, would be eliminated and replaced by technology. This paper examines the validity of this argument by estimating the impact of technology investment on local labor markets during that period. I find evidence for a positive, rather than negative, relationship between technology and employment. Furthermore, my estimates suggest there exists a complementary relationship between technology investment and growth in labor opportunities, rather than a substitution …

Alcohol Use And Mental Health Conditions Among Black College Males: Do Those Attending Postsecondary Minority Institutions Fare Better Than Those At Primarily White Institutions?, Adam E. Barry, Zachary Jackson, Daphne C. Watkins, Janelle R. Goodwill, Haslyn E R Hunte

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

While there is a sizeable body of research examining the association between alcohol use and mental health conditions among college students, there are sparse investigations specifically focusing on these associations among Black college students. This is concerning given Black college students face different stressors compared with their non-Black peers. Black males appear especially at risk, exhibiting increased susceptibility to mental health issues and drinking in greater quantities and more frequently than Black females. This investigation examined the association between alcohol consumption and mental health conditions among Black men attending institutions of higher education in the United States and sought to …

Discrimination In Health Care: Correlates Of Health Care Discrimination Among Black Males, Lauren J. Parker, Haslyn Hunte, Anita Ohmit Jan 2017

Discrimination In Health Care: Correlates Of Health Care Discrimination Among Black Males, Lauren J. Parker, Haslyn Hunte, Anita Ohmit

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Using data from the Indiana Black Men’s Health Study (N = 455), a community-based sample of adult Black men, the primary aim of this study was to explore factors of health care discrimination, and to examine if such reports differed by age and the frequency of race thoughts. Approximately one in four men reported experiencing discrimination in the health care setting. Results from the multivariable logistic regression models suggested that frequent race thoughts (odds ratio [OR]: 1.89, p < .05), not having health insurance (OR: 1.80, p < .05), and increased depressive symptomology (OR: 1.06, p < .01) were positively associated with reports of health care discrimination. A multiplicative interaction coefficient of age and frequency of race thoughts was included to determine if health care discrimination differed by age and frequency of race thoughts (OR: 1.03, p = .08). Results from the predicted probability …

Inseparable Faith: Exploring Manifestations And Experiences Of Faith-Work Integration In Young Alumni From A Christian University, Emilie Hoffman Jan 2017

Inseparable Faith: Exploring Manifestations And Experiences Of Faith-Work Integration In Young Alumni From A Christian University, Emilie Hoffman

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The integration of faith and work refers to the manner in which individuals reconcile meaning sets and worldviews with their work. In the two most recent decades, discussion on the involvement of religion, faith, and spirituality in the workplace has increased in popularity in the United States (Hammond, Stevens, & Svanoe, 2002; Hillman, 2005; Kidwell, 2014). While recent studies describe the characteristics of an individual’s integration of faith and work and influences on the same, research measuring the extent or trends of integration is lacking. Further, studies predominately focus on the impact of congregation, religious attendance, or workplaces on faith-work …

A- Or B+: The Signaling Effect Of The Letter Grade, Sheridan Rogers Jan 2017

A- Or B+: The Signaling Effect Of The Letter Grade, Sheridan Rogers

Honors Thesis Collection

There are three main factors that influence student major choice: ability, labor market returns, and preferences. In their time at college, students update themselves on all three in order to determine their final major choice. Ability is updating using transcript letter grades. However, when testing the effect of grade point average and SAT scores, both of which are measure ability, it is difficult to parse out the students’ actual ability versus the signal the measure gives the students about their ability. This paper will attempt to mitigate that issue by using a regression discontinuity design to determine the effect of …

An Overview Of Women’S Suffrage And Women’S Roles In The United States During Both World Wars, April Wright

Integrated Studies

The thesis then goes on to discuss the battle that women fought for women's suffrage, the roles that women were given during World War I, and how those roles were unlike anything they had ever experienced before. The thesis then discusses what life for women was like during the …

Abstract

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has increasingly received attention as one of the "signature wounds" of Iraq and Afghanistan wars, with more than 560,000 veterans diagnosed with PTSD since 2002. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of PTSD on all family members. The paper examines the history of PTSD, the preventive measures employed by Department of Defense (DoD), treatment methods, cost of treatments, and possible recommendations that could aid in alleviating the dangers facing family members with PTSD patients. Nurturing Constructive Change That Works: A Critical Theory-Informed Model For Transforming Health Service Psychologists' Views Of People With Disabilities, Roy O. Gathercoal, Kathleen Gathercoal, Winston Seegobin, Sarah Hadley

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

We have been developing and refining a disability training exercise for health service psychologists that is ever more effective at encouraging lasting change in the way students regard disabilities and the people who live with those disabilities. Although research suggests that simulation exercises tend to be ineffective at creating long-term attitude change in participants, quantitative and qualitative results indicate our exercise, composed of a simulation followed by debriefing and reflection, helps professionals better understand some of the challenges people with disabilities daily face, and how those challenges can affect their well being. We found this combination is more likely to …

Dissonance Between Personal Belief And Professional Values And The Challenge Of Facing Other Conflicting Ideas, Christopher Tan

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

It is the recommendation of this author that, in regards to this case, Jess Smith should complete the project despite her misgivings about the ethical nature of the band. However, Smith should ensure that both the client and manager are notified of her concerns along with the specific components of the project with which she took issue. The case of Jess Smith and the Design Firm ultimately highlights the issue regarding how to resolve dissonance between personal belief and professional values and more broadly the challenge of facing other ideas that challenge an individual’s personal convictions.

Learning Race And Racism While Learning: Experiences Of International Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Midwestern United States, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., Tiffany Steele, Jakia Marie, Kathryn Timm

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Researchers have documented how race and racism influence the college experiences of U.S. citizens. However, research on the ways that race and racism affect international students warrants similar attention. This qualitative study explored how international students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism and how such concepts shaped their college experiences. The participating international college students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism through media, relationships, formal education, and lived experiences. They defined these concepts in varying ways and had varying racial ideologies.
