Understanding Intersections And Impact: Planning, Police Violence, And Reform, Rachel L. Hassna Aug 2017

Understanding Intersections And Impact: Planning, Police Violence, And Reform, Rachel L. Hassna

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Although public safety has long been an integral aspect of planning, issues such as police violence and reform have been left to other professions and fields of study. Despite the fact that planning policy is executed and enforced by police power, and despite the fact that planning has a lengthy history of perpetuating structural inequality that condemns marginalized communities to higher rates of police violence and premature death, planners are rarely encouraged to consider the intersections of planning and police violence. By reviewing the history of planning and policing as interconnected mechanisms of social engineering and control, this research attempts …

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Cross-sector collaboration is a highly recommended strategy to eliminate health inequities nationally and globally. In the federal sector, it is evolving into an important approach for solving complex social problems, as evidenced by its steady proliferation the past few decades. Despite the increased adoption of cross-sector collaboration, it is still not a default strategy or preeminent option for managing complex social problems. In September 2015, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) hosted a Roundtable event to discuss opportunities and strategies to foster widespread adoption of cross-sector collaboration and resource alignment. The Roundtable featured several expert panelists and participants from …

Background: Chronic diseases are an important contributor to morbidity and mortality among racial/ethnic minority, low-income, and other under-resourced populations. Given that state health departments (and their chronic disease programs) play a significant role in providing population and preventive health services, their capacity to promote health equity is an important consideration in national efforts to address chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine capacity needs of state chronic disease programs with respect to promoting health equity.

Methods: In 2015, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) conducted a survey of its members that work within a …

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley Aug 2017

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley

First Global News Literacy Conference

In its current state, news literacy curriculum covers all the information types that consumers will see when they read, watch, listen to, and interact with news content. While current lessons do explain how press releases distribute information in the “promotion / publicity” neighborhood, there is much more nuance to the practice of PR that impacts information people read as ‘news’. In today’s climate of political spin cycles, it is more important than ever for news consumers to understand what public relations is and how its strategies influence news content. Because the practice of public relations is so often misunderstood and …

Critical Keys To Successful Offender Reentry: Getting A Handle On Substance Abuse And Mental Health Problems, Elaine Gunnison, Jacqueline B. Helfgott Aug 2017

Critical Keys To Successful Offender Reentry: Getting A Handle On Substance Abuse And Mental Health Problems, Elaine Gunnison, Jacqueline B. Helfgott

The Qualitative Report

Over the past several decades, all facets of institutional and community corrections have been growing. This growth has resulted in increased numbers of ex-offenders reentering society. While research has emerged on reentry, much of the research has focused on examining reentry failure as opposed to reentry success. Interviews of 40 ex-offenders and community corrections officers were conducted in Washington State to pinpoint what is needed to assist ex-offenders as they reenter society—particularly as it relates to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Results from interviews revealed that ex-offenders need assistance to address substance abuse and mental health issues while incarcerated …

Inimicus Libertatis: Chief Justice Rehnquist’S Majority Or Plurality Opinions In The Field Of Criminal Procedure, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Aug 2017

Inimicus Libertatis: Chief Justice Rehnquist’S Majority Or Plurality Opinions In The Field Of Criminal Procedure, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Scholarly Works

Since the early 1970’s an increasingly conservative Supreme Court of the United States has been leading this country through a “Criminal Procedure Counterrevolution” (also called “The Rehnquisition”), during which the federal rights and remedies of criminal defendants have been inexorably and significantly eroded. There are numerous books and law review articles discussing this counterrevolution. Chief Justice Rehnquist, the most articulate and ideological of the Courts conservative justices, may properly be regarded as the intellectual founder and leader of this trend in favor of restricting criminal procedure rights.

This article analyzes and provides a bibliography of Supreme Court criminal procedure opinions …

Evaluating Different Approaches For The Delivery Of Probiotics To Broilers At Different Life Stages, Claudia Duneska Castaneda Bustillo

Theses and Dissertations

Probiotics are an alternative to increase broiler productivity and flock health. For this reason, the objective of the first study was to evaluate commercially available Bacillus spp. based probiotic products on their ability to reduce Salmonella Heidelberg, in vitro. Results showed that most products reduced the lower concentrations of S. Heidelberg and maintained a reduction for up to 8 h. The second study was conducted to determine if bacterial colonization occurred in a broiler chick after in ovo injection. Using bioluminescence, it was demonstrated that bacteria could migrate and colonize the embryo within 2 h after in ovo injection into …

Transportation Network Companies' Ability To Sustain Success Amid Growing Regulation By Local Governments, Molly Parato Aug 2017

Transportation Network Companies' Ability To Sustain Success Amid Growing Regulation By Local Governments, Molly Parato

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Companies like Uber and Lyft have irreparably disrupted the taxicab industry, but as the law catches up with these new TNCs, the companies will have to take into consideration the extensive legal fees required in order to either fight or reshape transportation regulations. This is most evident for Uber, the largest TNC, which is currently facing more litigation than any other startup in the world.

This paper will first examine the pricing strategies of TNCs and how their entrance into the market has affected the taxicab industry. This paper will then discuss Uber specifically to determine whether the larger litigation …

Simulation-Optimization Approaches For Demand Side Management In Smart Grids, Mehrad Bastani

Open Access Dissertations

In smart and connected communities (S&CCs), energy, transportation, water, public safety, and all other services need to be managed efficiently to support smooth operation while providing a clean, economical, and safe environment for citizens. The power system infrastructure is the most important part of S&CCs that affects the functionality of all components. Over the past two decades, power systems have witnessed significant changes in the use of renewable and distributed energy resources, energy control technologies, and technical advances in communication and computation, which has led to the development of smart grids. Smart grids provide sustainable power grids with the capabilities …

Pardon And Parole In Prohibition-Era New York: Discretionary Justice In The Administrative State, Carolyn Strange Aug 2017

Pardon And Parole In Prohibition-Era New York: Discretionary Justice In The Administrative State, Carolyn Strange

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Historians of early-modern England and British colonies have productively applied Douglas Hay’s germinal study of mercy. In contrast, historians of the United States have overlooked the utility of the conceptual tools Hay provided to prize open the mitigation of punishment across time and place. In the decade that followed the First World War, disputes over the proper role of mercy and administrative discretion were as heated as they were in Hanoverian England. In Jazz Age New York, fears of gangsterism and concern over the apparent laxity of parole regulations put the proponents of Progressive penology on the defensive. This article …
