Freedom Of Religion And Freedom Of Speech - The United States, Australia And Singapore Compared, Keith Thompson
Freedom Of Religion And Freedom Of Speech - The United States, Australia And Singapore Compared, Keith Thompson
Law Papers and Journal Articles
Freedom of Religion (more correctly, freedom of conscience, belief and religion under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966 (ICCPR)), and Freedom of Speech have been logically tied together since human beings were sentient creatures. The two rights are inseparably connected by logic, since one cannot speak freely unless one has the freedom of conscience to think out something to say. For this reason, the two rights were combined in the First Amendment to the US Constitution in 1789 and that joinder has cemented the connection ever since even though the extrapolation of the two rights …

An interpretive phenomenological analysis, informed by the philosophy of Dr. Martin Heidegger, was undertaken. Participants were solicited from the American Burn Association Advanced Practice Provider (APP) special interest group site. The results provided a thick description of the lived experience of …

The Effects Of Community Type And Sexual Orientation On Adolescent Alcohol Abuse: A Retrospective Exploration, Karla Beth Moore
The Effects Of Community Type And Sexual Orientation On Adolescent Alcohol Abuse: A Retrospective Exploration, Karla Beth Moore
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Considerable research has demonstrated that adolescents, as a whole, are experimenting with alcohol at alarming rates (Biddle, Bank, & Marlin, 1980; Donath, et al., 2011;King, Chassin, & Molina, 2009). However, research is very mixed on findings identifying which groups of adolescents tend to be most at risk for using alcohol, as well as the reasons these groups identify for such experimentation (Carlo, Crockett, Wilkinson, & Beal, 2011; Coomber, Toumbourou, Miller, Staiger, Hemphill, & Catalano, 2011). The current study examined participants from various community types and sexual orientations, in a retrospective manner. Participants (ages 18 and over) answered questions on a …
The Ethics Behind Efficiency, Jonathan B. Wight
The Ethics Behind Efficiency, Jonathan B. Wight
Economics Faculty Publications
The normative elements underlying efficiency are more complex than generally portrayed, and rely upon ethical frameworks that are generally absent from classroom discussions. most textbooks, for example, ignore the ethical differences between Paretto efficiency (based on voluntary win-win outcomes) and the modern Kaldor-Hicks efficiency used in public policy assessments (in which winners gain more than losers lose). For the latter to be ethically palatable, society must have in place basic institutions of justice, transparency, and accountability. Normative economics thus requires a pluralist approach that includes considerations of virtue and duty, closer to Adam Smith's Enlightenment conceptions. This surprising finding should …
Commodifying Policing: A Recipe For Community-Police Tensions, Nora V. Demleitner
Commodifying Policing: A Recipe For Community-Police Tensions, Nora V. Demleitner
Scholarly Articles
This Article, in Part II, begins with a description of how municipalities, at least since the recession of 2008, have fallen short of fully funding their departments. Part III focuses on four distinct outside funding components and their impact on policing. The first subsection discusses asset forfeitures, under both state and federal law. Subsection two highlights revenue derived from citations, often in the form of traffic tickets. A discussion of fees that are being added to fines, often to fund courts, probation agencies, and police departments, follows. The increasing amounts and types of fees imposed have substantially increased the burden …
