State V. Brown: A Test For Local Food Ordinances, Ryan Almy
State V. Brown: A Test For Local Food Ordinances, Ryan Almy
Maine Law Review
For many of us, adding a little milk to our morning coffee is likely one of the more insignificant tasks of the day. For Dan Brown of Blue Hill, Maine, that splash of dairy in his coffee mug is the result of his personal labor and constant, meticulous attention paid to the health and well-being of a single 1,000 pound mammal. Besides fresh raw milk, what does Brown gain from his efforts? He knows the exact source of the milk he puts in his coffee, as well as the butter his daughter spreads on her toast: Sprocket, Brown’s sole dairy …

'Freedom Of Expression From The 'Age Of Extremes' To The 'Age Of Terror': Reflections On Public Order Law And The Legal Responses To Political And Religious Extremism In 1930s Britain And The Post 9/11, Iain Channing
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This paper highlights some of the legal responses to political extremism in the 1930s and the modern challenge of international terrorism and extreme right-wing activism. In particular, it focuses on restrictions to freedom of expression, the tactics and responses employed by the police and the subsequent judgments of the judiciary. During the interwar years, the activities of extremist political parties caused major disruption to public order. Public meetings, marches and demonstrations organised by the British Union of Fascists (BUF), the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) and anti-fascist protestors created new challenges for the authorities. Despite fears that new legislation …
Of Asthma And Ashtrays: Examining The Rights Of And Exploring Ways To Protect Maine Tenants Living In Multi-Unit Rental Housing Who Are Involuntarily Exposed To Secondhand Tobacco Smoke In Their Homes, Amy K. Olfene
Maine Law Review
Toxins found in tobacco smoke are deadly, and there is no safe level of exposure. Secondhand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer in humans. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) has declared secondhand tobacco smoke a Group A carcinogen, a rating “reserved for those compounds or mixtures which have been shown to cause cancer in humans, based on studies in human populations.” Exposure to tobacco smoke can cause a number of diseases and ailments in both smokers and nonsmokers; in addition, such exposure can exacerbate existing illnesses. In the United States, …

The Post-Crawford Rise In Voter Id Laws: A Solution Still In Search Of A Problem, David M. Faherty
Maine Law Review
In Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, the Supreme Court upheld Indiana’s voter identification law, which required registered voters to present government-issued photo identification at the polls. Instead of applying heighted scrutiny to a law that had an effect on voter qualifications, the Court simply balanced the asserted state interest of protecting the integrity and reliability of elections by preventing voter fraud against the burden imposed on eligible voters who were prevented from voting because they did not possess the required form of photo identification. Not persuaded by the fact that Indiana could not point to a single instance of …

Moody’S Paints Grim Picture For Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
Predicting one’s own future is an uncertain business.
But when institutions known for their prognosticating
skills predict your future, you might
want to listen. This lesson is one that America’s
institutions of higher education seem to be failing.
After looking at the budget proposal by the
Trump administration, Moody’s Investors Service
painted a grim financial future for the nation’s
colleges and universities. According to their
analysis, Trump’s budget proposal to slash federal
research funding and end financial support
for the arts and humanities would irreparably
harm institutions that rely on those government
dollars.

Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho
Cognitive Maps Of Educators' Attitudes Toward Unauthorized Immigrants: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective, Kerry Pecho
Theses and Dissertations
Legislative acts, political discourse, and social movements have highlighted how who immigrants are and where they are from play a substantial role in how they are received. Ewing (2012) noted that decisions regarding the U.S. immigration system are “often shaped more by public fears and anxieties than by sound public policy” (p. 2). The media often ignore the multiple challenges faced by immigrants and instead focus solely on their legal status (Nittle, 2012). Experiencing prejudice, on an individual and institutional level, has detrimental effects on the individual’s physical well-being, emotional well-being, and achievements and success in life. Research has indicated …

A Delphi Study: Identifying Practices Used To Build Cohesive Teams In A Virtual Setting, Barbara Thiss
Dissertations
The purpose of this Delphi study was to identify practices used to build cohesive teams in a virtual setting and to determine whether the practices were task-oriented or social-oriented. Organizations are challenged to remain competitive in a rapidly changing climate. Leaders in business, education, manufacturing, healthcare and nonprofit organizations look for answers to the economic, environmental, competitive and technological issues they face. Greater utilization of teams in organizations provides a better response to competitive forces, mines greater efficiencies from existing resources, and offers an ability to produce better results. Carron, Widmeyer and Brawley’s (1985) study on cohesion found a significant …

Semantic Description Of Activities In Videos, Fillipe Dias Moreira De Souza
Semantic Description Of Activities In Videos, Fillipe Dias Moreira De Souza
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Description of human activities in videos results not only in detection of actions and objects but also in identification of their active semantic relationships in the scene. Towards this broader goal, we present a combinatorial approach that assumes availability of algorithms for detecting and labeling objects and actions, albeit with some errors. Given these uncertain labels and detected objects, we link them into interpretative structures using domain knowledge encoded with concepts of Grenander’s general pattern theory. Here a semantic video description is built using basic units, termed generators, that represent labels of objects or actions. These generators have multiple out-bonds, …

Learner-Directed Vs. Instructor-Provided Curriculum Among Undergraduate Students, Christopher D. Martinez
Learner-Directed Vs. Instructor-Provided Curriculum Among Undergraduate Students, Christopher D. Martinez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There has been little or no research on the use of a Learning Object in the field of religious studies. The purpose of this research study was to assess undergraduate student knowledge gain outcomes between instructor-provided and learner-directed methods, which is the independent variable, using asynchronous, online, narrated PowerPoint presentations compared to undergraduate student knowledge gain using an online learning-objects unit, in a college-level world religions survey course at St. Petersburg College. This study assessed undergraduate student knowledge gain outcomes between instructor-provided and learner-directed methods among 90 college undergraduate students and determined whether there was a significant difference in the …
