Narratives Of Marginalized Cyclists: Understanding Obstacles To Utilitarian Cycling Among Women And Minorities In Portland, Or, Amy Lubitow
TREC Final Reports
Research has demonstrated that everyday or utilitarian forms of cycling are most likely to generate positive population-level health impacts (Garrard et al., 2012), yet significant deterrents to routine cycling remain, particularly for women and minorities. The primary aim of this project was to conduct a qualitative interview study that generated rich, narrative data regarding obstacles to routine or utilitarian cycling for women and minorities who already see biking as a viable form of transit, but who make relatively few bike trips. A secondary aim of the project was to develop a set of specific interventions that have the potential to …
The Semantics Of Suspicion In The Writings Of Desmoulins, Ivy Francisco José Gilbert
The Semantics Of Suspicion In The Writings Of Desmoulins, Ivy Francisco José Gilbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
An exacting command of language in his employ, journalist Camille Desmoulins was arguably one of the most dangerous and cunning players in the political arena of revolutionary France. His work is a clear synthesis of linguistic and political theory but what, precisely, made it so effective? When his work is regarded collectively, a theme emerges wherein Desmoulins uses language designed to categorically perpetuate suspicion. Using the principles of lexical semantics, rhetoric, and connotation, this project seeks to examine the semantic undercurrents of Desmoulins’s works as they relate specifically to the public perception of suspicion, and to define the linguistic parameters …

The purpose of this project is to provide relevant background information and data to support the future development of a comprehensive management plan for the …
Single Waypoint Zem/Zev Based Closed-Loop Controller Design For Rendezvous With A Rotating Target, Armando Alvarez Rolins
Single Waypoint Zem/Zev Based Closed-Loop Controller Design For Rendezvous With A Rotating Target, Armando Alvarez Rolins
Theses and Dissertations
The research presented in this thesis addresses a very specific kind of autonomous rendezvous procedure between two spacecraft in close proximity, namely that in which the chaser object is attempting to dock at a location on a rotating target which is tracing a circle perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The approaches that have been mentioned in literature which focus on this specific condition make use of offline optimization algorithms to plot the trajectory of the chaser and use closed-loop control to follow that trajectory. This method is computationally demanding and does not allow for feedback in the desired boundary …
Application-Driven Traffic Sensor System Acceptance Tests For Intelligent Transportation Systems, Thiago Goncalves Pereira Mendonca
Application-Driven Traffic Sensor System Acceptance Tests For Intelligent Transportation Systems, Thiago Goncalves Pereira Mendonca
Theses and Dissertations
Transportation agencies strive to keep people and goods moving. Operation and maintenance of transportation infrastructure is key to accomplish their objectives. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications rely on massive detection grids that collectively demand significant maintenance resources. Resource constraints force transportation agencies to look for innovative ways to optimize their operational and maintenance costs while serving their users at intended performance levels. This paper presents a Systems Engineering (SE) view to derive traffic detection sensor requirements for components and subsystems based on application-specific needs. The goal of the approach is to obtain stakeholders view of an acceptable performance based on …

Examining The Safety Climate Of U.S. Based Aviation Maintenance, Repair, And Overhaul (Mro) Organizations, Kole Osaretin Uhuegho
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to replicate Fogarty (2005) by determining if the current study’s data were consistent with Fogarty’s model involving the three constructs of Safety Climate, Psychological Strain, and Errors; and (b) to examine the extent to which the sample data supported Bandura’s (1977) reciprocal causation model involving the three corresponding dimensions of Environment, Person, and Behavior. The study used an explanatory correlational design to measure the relationships between the targeted variables associated with U.S based civilian MRO workers. Safety Climate/Environment variables included recognition, safety concern, supervision, feedback, and training; Psychological Strain/Person variables included …
African-American Perceptions Of Community-Oriented Policing Programs, Adrian L. Griggs
African-American Perceptions Of Community-Oriented Policing Programs, Adrian L. Griggs
Honors Theses
Reports of police killings of unarmed African-American men have been commonly featured on the news in recent months. Protests in response to those incidents have occasionally turned into riots, and the tension between the minority community and police remains unchanged. There is always a racial variable implicit whenever the African-American community policing debate arises. Researchers have conducted studies on this challenge and have examined differences in perceptions of police officers between African Americans and other racial groups. Studies have been conducted that examine why there might be less satisfaction with police among African Americans but have not considered how these …

For the last 500,000 years, the world climate has been in transition from warm to cold and vice versa. However, recent human-caused climate change has increased the rate of change in extreme and average climate conditions. Globally, people are facing higher than average temperatures as well as accelerated rates of drought and flooding. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC,) natural systems around the globe are being affected by regional climate change, mainly temperature increases. They IPCC found that 20-30% of plant and animal species are likely to be at increased risk of extinction if global average temperatures …

Victimization Rates Among Deaf And Hard Of Hearing College Students, Kristi Love
Victimization Rates Among Deaf And Hard Of Hearing College Students, Kristi Love
Theses
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is receiving increased focus in society, with high profile examples of victimization involving athletes, actors, and politicians being discussed frequently. Society is more accepting of reporting issues of abuse and seeking help for victims. As awareness of domestic and intimate partner violence has increased, resources to address this issue are likely being utilized more. However, some populations are likely being overlooked, underserved, or excluded from accessing these resources. Deaf and hard of hearing individuals are among those who are underrepresented in the existing research on intimate partner violence. Research on victimization among Deaf and hard of …

Don’T Listen To The Media: It’S Okay To Isolate Yourself, Ella Harris
2017 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
Today’s media depicts the narrative that social isolation is harmful to one’s mental health. The use of solitary confinement in the prison system, and the representation of this correctional method in the media, has forced society to draw the conclusion that it is unhealthy to spend time alone. As evidenced by stories like Chris McCandless’ in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, even with the negative connotation attached to reclusion, it is still humanity’s instinct to retreat to the wilderness when society becomes too overwhelming. This research paper examines the desire to be alone, the desire to spend time in …
