Innovation In Ill-Structured Decision-Making By Teams: Contributions Of What Members Say And Don’T Say And How They Are Related, Steven D. Silver
Faculty Publications
The contributions of both types of information that are exchanged and coaction in silence to innovation objectives of decision-making teams are considered. Ideation and idea generation are recognized as critical to innovation in decisions that are ill structured. We focus on coaction in silence and the conditions in interaction that are likely to facilitate idea generation. Integration of ideas and evaluations that are likely to contribute most to the quality of decisions are given explicit forms. Major contentions of the account are examined in experimental data.

Bars, Chains, And Broken Things, Andrew J. Filson
Bars, Chains, And Broken Things, Andrew J. Filson
Music Graduate Theses
Bars, Chains, and Broken Things is a four-movement work for orchestra with a distinct social narrative: the American prison system. During my time working as a volunteer with the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility, I came to know several young men and their stories. This piece serves as a loosely programmatic work chronicling the four most significant concepts which resonated with me. The individual movements are named and seek to musically represent these ideas: “Abandonment” - a common feeling among the incarcerated, “Imprisonment” - the effects and words of those feeling isolated, “Solace” - a state of calm acceptance, and “False …

Working From Home: A Double Edged Sword, Kathleen Farrell
Working From Home: A Double Edged Sword, Kathleen Farrell
Conference papers
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how working from home can be optimally managed to achieve greater work/ home harmony. Critics assert that employees who are not office-based are "actually not working". The following are challenges of working from home
-The difficulty in separating home from work
-Self- imposed pressure of working endlessly and
-The feeling of being alienated from companies’ major decisions and sometimes promotions.
Otani (2015) argues for flexibility and cites Sheryl Sandberg, Facebooks Chief Operating Officer as making the point that it is more important to measure the results rather than watching people "try". Even …

Improving Induction Of New Preschool To 12th Grade Teachers Through Differentiated Induction Activities Tailored To Individual Teachers' Needs, Timothy Teehan
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the mixed methods pilot study, which used qualitative interview data and quantitative survey data, was to investigate the impact of providing induction activities tailored to individual teacher's needs on new preschool to 12th grade teachers in their first to fourth year of teaching. The district's attrition rate has been significantly higher than the 30% attrition rate experienced across the nation. This study asks: How can an individualized targeted multi-faceted induction program for teachers in the first to fourth year of teaching prepare individuals for the responsibilities of teaching? From the perspective of mentors, principals, and teachers in …

Economic and Business Review
The article explores the moderating role of modern communication technology and the mediating role of information diversity perceived by virtual team members in the relationship between e-leadership and virtual team identity development. The assumptions and conceptual model are developed by combining constructs from the fields of psychology, sociology and management and using the triangulation approach to form a common conceptual model. The results show that e-leadership is directly and positively related to the development of virtual team identity. The contribution of the research is seen in the formation of a cognitive conceptual model that identifies the dimensions of virtual team …

Economic and Business Review
Corporate survival increasingly depends on knowledge management, and the world of work is characterized by the phenomenon of an aging workforce. Although there is much literature on aging management, little research has been conducted on the learning of older workers. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap and identify the path of forming strategies for successful learning of both age groups. The main findings of the study show that both younger and older workers are motivated to learn. It is recognized that the internal and external factors of motivation to learn and perceived self-efficacy need to be …

Economic and Business Review
Digitization and the associated digital transformation is becoming one of the greatest challenges in companies. Numerous studies examine factors that enable digital transformation and the impact of digital transformation on business operations. In any case, one of the prerequisites for successful digital transformation is also an understanding between senior management and IT, which takes care of the implementation of digitization projects. Despite efforts to create an appropriate relationship between IT and senior management, there is still a gap between the two in many companies. The aim of this article is therefore to contribute to the understanding of this gap by …

Elementary Title I Teachers Perception Of Stress, Burnout And The Impact On Retention, Kelly Thompson
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of stress due to their job, and if this had an influence on retention. The study concentrated on teacher’s perceptions on stress, teacher retention along with their views on coping strategies to handle or prevent stress. The conceptual framework for this study was the transactional model of stress theory by Lazarus and Folkman, which provided a better understanding of demands in education and the resources provided to teachers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of stress due to their job and if …

Relationship Between Advisor Servant Leadership Behaviors And First-Year Students' Intent To Persist, Jennifer Kelly
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This correlational study sought to determine the relationship between advisor servant leadership behaviors and first-year students’ intent to persist from fall 2016 to spring 2017 and from spring 2017 to fall 2017 with students in a private, four-year, religiously affiliated university in the United States. The research was grounded in Tinto’s (1975) persistence theory and Greenleaf’s (1977) theory of servant leadership. The Advisor Servant Leadership Behavior Scale (ASLBS) (Paul, 2012) and descriptive analysis were applied. Study results indicated that all four servant-leader constructs, degree awareness (DA), conceptual mapping (CM), advising environment (AE), and holistic growth (HG), were associated with advisors’ …

Non-Fluent Speech Following Stroke Is Caused By Impaired Efference Copy, Lynda Feenaughty, Alexandra Basilakos, Leonardo Bonilha, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Chris Rorden, Brielle C. Stark, Julius Fridriksson
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Efference copy is a cognitive mechanism argued to be critical for initiating and monitoring speech: however, the extent to which breakdown of efference copy mechanisms impact speech production is unclear. This study examined the best mechanistic predictors of non-fluent speech among 88 stroke survivors. Objective speech fluency measures were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA). The primary PCA factor was then entered into a multiple stepwise linear regression analysis as the dependent variable, with a set of independent mechanistic variables. Participants’ ability to mimic audio-visual speech (“speech entrainment response”) was the best independent predictor of non-fluent speech. We suggest …
Grit And Academic Performance Of First- And Second-Year Students Majoring In Education, Lindsey N. Williams
Grit And Academic Performance Of First- And Second-Year Students Majoring In Education, Lindsey N. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Postsecondary student performance has been studied in great detail by higher education systems and their stakeholders in attempts to identify what may contribute to increased rates of retention and degree completion. Research on predictors of postsecondary performance has focused significantly on the relationship between performance and traditional cognitive measures, yet a growing body of literature examines other factors that may play a role, including that of grit, a non-cognitive trait described as a disposition toward perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Moreover, for graduates who enter the workforce in a profession as demanding as teaching, characteristics such as grit have …

Counterproductive behaviour, as a form of unethical behaviour, poses a threat to the organisation's reputation, financial performance and also its existence. In this article, we therefore examine the influence of leader-member exchange (LMX), psychological safety and moral strength on counterproductive behaviour to better understand and reduce its occurrence. The results of the analysis (linear regression and mediation-moderation model) on a sample of 116 employees showed that LMX was negatively associated with counterproductive behaviour and positively associated with psychological safety and moral strength. The results also showed that moral strength is positively related to counterproductive behaviour, meaning that individuals with high …

Contributions Of Citizen Science To Landscape Democracy: Potentials And Challenges Of Current Approaches, Brian J. Shaw, Hélène Draux, María García Martín, John Martin, Claudia Bieling
Professional Services
For landscape research to function in a democratic landscape governance, it must achieve two things. One, it must integrate stakeholder perspectives at multiple steps of the research process, and two, it must effectively communicate its knowledge and insights. Citizen science can be described as the involvement of the public in the scientific process, through a range of different approaches. We ask what such approaches can bring the landscape research and its stakeholders closer together. We survey the field of citizen science and present a number of typologies of approaches. Next, we introduce three applications of citizen science in the landscape …
The Performance Of Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling (Msem) In Comparison To Multilevel Modeling (Mlm) In Multilevel Mediation Analysis With Non-Normal Data, Thanh Vinh Pham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The mediation analysis has been used to test if the effect of one variable on another variable is mediated by the third variable. The mediation analysis answers a question of how a predictor influences an outcome variable. Such information helps to gain understanding of mechanism underlying the variation of the outcome. When the mediation analysis is conducted on hierarchical data, the structure of data needs to be taken into account. Krull and MacKinnon (1999) recommended using Multilevel Modeling (MLM) with nested data and showed that the MLM approach has more power and flexibility over the standard Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) …

Sleep And Alzheimer’S Disease: A Critical Examination Of The Risk That Sleep Problems Or Disorders Particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea Pose Towards Developing Alzheimer’S Disease, Omonigho A. Michael Bubu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a critical examination of the relationship between sleep problems and/or disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Alzheimer Disease (AD). First, I conducted an exhaustive systematic review of existing literature, and identified gaps in research that led to specific research aims. For the first aim, I conducted the first ever-published meta-analysis examining sleep, cognitive decline and AD, providing an aggregate effect of sleep on AD. Second, focusing on OSA, I conducted a study examining OSA’s effect on longitudinal changes on AD biomarkers in cognitive normal, MCI and AD subjects, using data from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative …
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
The Spirit Of Friendship: Girlfriends In Contemporary African American Literature, Tangela La'chelle Serls
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Spirit of Friendship: Girlfriends in Contemporary African American Literature examines spiritual subjectivities that inspire girlfriends in three contemporary novels to journey towards actualization. It examines the girlfriend bond as a space where the Divine Spirit can flourish and assist girlfriends as they seek to become actualized. This project raises epistemological questions as it suggests that within the girlfriend dynamic, knowledge that is traditionally subjugated is formed and refined. Finally, girlfriend epistemology is considered in light of Black Girl Magic, a contemporary social and cultural movement among Black women.
L2 Motivation In Japanese Elementary Efl Classrooms: A Review Of The Literature, Cassandra Brown
L2 Motivation In Japanese Elementary Efl Classrooms: A Review Of The Literature, Cassandra Brown
University Honors Theses
In their formal education systems, East Asian nations began to actively incorporate English lessons around the turn of the 21 st century. For Japan, perhaps the most controversial reform was introducing compulsory English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction at the primary school level in 2011. A central policy goal specifies guidelines for encouraging positive affect and long-term motivation toward the language. In this literature review, I discuss empirical studies from within the past five years which explore Japanese elementary EFL students’ motivation and engagement in class. Researchers framed their inquiry within the self-determination theory (SDT) framework, a dominant theory …

Minimize: Possessions & Identity, Maggie Denham
University Honors Theses
A certain interpretation of the minimalist lifestyle is growing in popularity. The author questions the importance of a minimalist mindset in contemporary life, including in their own graphic design process. The author asks the following: how does minimalism and the growing minimalist culture of freedom from possessions impact the relationship between possessions and an individual’s sense of self? This publication design project is an examination of personal habits with possessions and the relationships the author has with them. Minimize is the photographed documentation of things owned with a focus on the things that aren't needed. The newsprint publication design also …
Measuring Cultural Competency In Educators: The Educators Scale Of Student Diversity, Ronak A. Patel
Measuring Cultural Competency In Educators: The Educators Scale Of Student Diversity, Ronak A. Patel
Education Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to uncover a rich theoretical basis of cultural competency and awareness in education and create an instrument, Educators Scale of Student Diversity (ESSD), which reliably and validly measures cultural competency in educators. Current measures lack in both a wide theoretical basis of cultural competency as it relates to educators in diverse teaching environments and in reported psychometric quality. The ESSD derived from a wide range of theoretical constructs that encompass the experience of modern teachers in diverse environments. The original 50 items, which were written after an extensive literature review, were reviewed by a …

Delays In Treatment: A Literature Review Of Pathways To Treatment For Psychosis, Daniel S. Connelly
University Honors Theses
Psychosis and the signs of psychosis are not widely understood by individuals, families, primary care or community health professionals. As a result, psychotic individuals experience a particularly lengthy delay -- an average of two years -- before they receive treatment; a duration that is called in literature the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP; Connor et al., 2016; Corcoran et al., 2007; Malla et al., 2010). Additionally, despite extensive research, there remains sizeable gaps in knowledge on these delays. Such gaps include how a lack of access to services may contribute to delays, how the psychotic experience delays in justice institutions, …
National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice
National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice
Doctoral Dissertations
In 2017, the President proposed a budget that allocated sixty percent of US discretionary resources toward military spending, putting US military spending higher than that of the next eight nations combined. Despite this enormous allocation of resources, millions of Americans feel so insecure that they have decided to take steps to insure their own security. With stockpiles of food and weapons, in personal bunkers, these preppers are viewed by some as extreme in their approach. The purpose of this piece is to explore the causes and fears that drive prepping behavior, and what view these individuals have of the US …
