Building Administrator’S Facilitation Of Teacher Leadership: Moderators Associated With Teachers’ Reported Levels Of Empowerment, Kelly Moran Edd, Karen H. Larwin Phd
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The current, mixed-methods investigation examines the role of building administrators in the perceived level of empowerment of classroom teachers. As such, this study was designed to contribute to the paucity of current research on teacher empowerment, thus informing school leaders on the importance of practice of empowering teachers and what variables can moderate attempts to empower educators. Level of perceived empowerment was measured using the School Participant Empowerment Scale (SPES), which evaluates six dimensions of teacher empowerment: decision-making, professional growth, status, self-efficacy, autonomy, and impact. Variables, such as gender and tenure of the building administrators and teacher, the presence of …
Predicting And Preventing Secondary Victimization For Sexual Assault Survivors: An Integrative Literature Review, Sara Gears
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Survivors of sexual assault often experience upsetting interactions with legal and medical professionals during post-assault care, a phenomenon termed “secondary victimization”; research is lacking on ways in which providers can predict and prevent this occurrence.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify traumatizing aspects of post-assault care and to explore potential interventions for preventing or abating secondary victimization.
Method: An integrative literature review was conducted to include recent, primary, peer-reviewed sources. Data synthesis and analysis was completed to identify themes in the literature as they pertain to the research questions.
Results: Commonly identified traumatizing aspects of …
Opioid Vs Antidepressant Efficacy In Treatment Of Comorbid Chronic Pain And Depression In Older Adults: An Integrative Literature Review, Elizabeth Swanson
Opioid Vs Antidepressant Efficacy In Treatment Of Comorbid Chronic Pain And Depression In Older Adults: An Integrative Literature Review, Elizabeth Swanson
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Complexity of treatment of older adults frequently suffering from comorbid chronic pain and depression necessitates a further understanding of how best to focus treatment for these conditions to increase functional ability, quality of life, social, physical, and emotional well-being. Nurse practitioners should be aware of how to best treat these patients. The question whether to treat the pain directly, treat the depression, or using combined treatment for both conditions is a barrier to effective treatment by clinicians.
Objectives: The purpose of this research is to compare the pharmacological treatment strategies and explore their differences, similarities, and effectiveness in improving …

Faculty Sponsor: Elizabeth Hartman, PhD, RN
Abstract
Background: African American women tend to encounter pregnancy and infant loss twice as high as any other racial group; however, present research does not supply adequate information with regard to abortion concerning minority women. Consequently, African American females may be experiencing post abortion emotional effects and not be receiving proper mental health care.
Objective: To determine if African American women experience a higher rate of post abortion emotional effects compared to other races and …

Association Between Improved Mental Illness Treatment And Homelessness Outcomes, Madeline Caplice
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: A significantly higher percentage of the homeless population in the United States suffer from severe mental illness as compared to the total population. Research suggests that experiencing homelessness contributes to sensitivity to psychiatric distress in addition to less successful mental health recovery outcomes.
Objectives: This literature review sought to evaluate the effectiveness of improving mental illness treatment as a way to also combat homelessness through interventions such as supportive housing.
Methods: This integrative literature review was conducted using keywords “homelessness,” “mental illness,” and “supportive housing” to search the literature between 2010 and 2017.
Results: This study reveals that …

EFFECTS OF CHRONIC ILLNESS ON SELF-IMAGE IN ADOLESCENTS:
AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW
Krista Stillson
Abstract
Background: Chronic illness can pose more than just pathological effects on an individual. During the vulnerable developmental stage of adolescence, the psychological effects of disease can be equally as damaging. In adolescence, manifestations of chronic illness can cause a distorted self-image which may potentiate negative outcomes such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. For this reason, it is important for nurses to be aware of the broad impact that can accompany disease and use interventions to counteract such effects. Implementation of coping interventions can help …

Strategies For Delivering Sexual Health Education To Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Megan Harris
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurobiological condition leading to cognitive and social deficits within individuals on the spectrum. Adolescence is a time of intense physical and psychosocial changes that prove difficult for youth with ASDs. As families work through this transition they try to navigate teaching sexual health to their adolescent with an ASD. Teaching should be done to promote health, healthy relationships, and to prevent victimization. Yet, parents report that they lack the knowledge and support to complete this task. The purpose of this literature review was to synthesize research on strategies for teaching sexual health education to …

Mental illness is commonly under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, or untreated, particularly in the elderly population. An expected population increase for those 65 years and older, increased in health care expenses coupled with the moral and ethical obligation of health care providers to promote quality of life at all ages makes investigation to alternative treatments in this population is worth investigating. The purpose of this literature review is to synthesize existing studies to clarify the following questions: What are the effects of pet therapy on those experiencing signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety? Why is pet therapy still lagging in validated studies, …

Sensitivity Of Pain Assessment For Critically Ill, Nonverbal Adults, Ruta Jarmontaviciute
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Patient’s self-report is a “gold standard” in assessing pain, yet it is not always possible in critically ill, nonverbal adults. In such cases, the use of reliable behavioral pain assessment tools is paramount to patient outcomes. However, the literature presented conflicting information regarding behavioral pain assessment tools and their sensitivity in assessing pain in critically ill, nonverbal adults.
Objective: This integrative research aimed to explore the effectiveness and barriers in the clinical guidelines of the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) and the Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS) assessment tools for the detection of pain in critically ill, nonverbal adults. …
