National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice Nov 2017

National Insecurity: Why Do So Many In The World's Most Security Conscious Nation Live In Fear?, Jerry Rice

Doctoral Dissertations

In 2017, the President proposed a budget that allocated sixty percent of US discretionary resources toward military spending, putting US military spending higher than that of the next eight nations combined. Despite this enormous allocation of resources, millions of Americans feel so insecure that they have decided to take steps to insure their own security. With stockpiles of food and weapons, in personal bunkers, these preppers are viewed by some as extreme in their approach. The purpose of this piece is to explore the causes and fears that drive prepping behavior, and what view these individuals have of the US …

Sex Trafficking Survivor-Advocates' Experience With Aftercare, Brian Dale Bruijn Nov 2017

Sex Trafficking Survivor-Advocates' Experience With Aftercare, Brian Dale Bruijn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In recent decades, the United States (US) government has made human trafficking a federal offense and federal and state agencies have started funding efforts to get sex trafficking survivors out of trafficking and into aftercare services. However, there has been little research on the quality of aftercare services for survivors of sex trafficking in the US. The author of the current study interviewed eight survivors of US sex trafficking about their experiences with aftercare. The semi-structured interviews were analyzed using grounded theory methodology. The core category of this study was "For sex trafficking survivors, a successful restorative aftercare experience is …

Tic Adapted Child Occupational Self-Assessment (Cosa-T): Modified Tool Based On Clinician Feedback, Heather S. Martin Ppotd, Otr/L, Jan Rowe Dr.Ot, Mph, Otr/L, Faota

Student Capstone Papers

Tic disorders and Tourette syndrome include motor and vocal tics, affecting as much as 1% of the population (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2016). In addition, Tourette syndrome is often associated with comorbid neuropsychiatric conditions that have been linked to poorer quality of life (QoL) in youth compared to peers (Conelea et al., 2011). To manage this lessened QoL, mental health providers have historically treated these youth (Woods et al., 2008). More recently, occupational therapists have noted success in treating these children (Rowe, Yuen & Dure, 2013). In general, occupational therapists address QoL by assessing and treating occupations, roles, and …

Using Green Messages To Cue Recycling Tendencies, Danielle Quichocho Nov 2017

Using Green Messages To Cue Recycling Tendencies, Danielle Quichocho

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recycling of common plastics is a practical way to limit the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, and eventually contributes to various forms of pollution. However, statistics indicate that it is not currently a normalized, prioritized behavior. A pilot study indicated that relying only on preexisting frameworks such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model to understand consumer perceptions simply does not encompass the scope of the topic. Consumer experiences with green messages, especially in the current climate of a saturated advertising market are incredibly complex. Understanding these experiences is also currently being impeded by inconsistencies in how researchers in …

Music Ensemble Participation: Personality Traits And Music Experience, Tracy A. Torrance

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The personality of musicians, artists, and other creative persons is of considerable interest to researchers and educators who seek to identify traits associated with musical behaviors. Personality traits can influence music behaviors such as instrument choice, ensemble choice, practice habits, and musical experience, which may contribute to continued music participation. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between personality type, music ensemble section, instrument choice (vocal or instrumental), and musical experience in college students and individuals who choose to continue participation after college. Few studies have concentrated on personality characteristics of ensemble members at the collegiate level …

Using Analytics To Transform A Problem-Based Case Library: An Educational Design Research Approach, Matthew Schmidt, Andrew A. Tawfik Nov 2017

Using Analytics To Transform A Problem-Based Case Library: An Educational Design Research Approach, Matthew Schmidt, Andrew A. Tawfik

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This article describes the iterative design, development, and evaluation of a case-based learning environment focusing on an ill-structured sales management problem. We discuss our processes and situate them within the broader framework of educational design research. The learning environment evolved over the course of three design phases. A semisummative evaluation of student concept maps after the third phase revealed unsatisfactory learning outcomes. This paper focuses on how we investigated design flaws that contributed to poor learning performance. A specific focus of our investigation was the use of Google Analytics data, which uncovered weaknesses in our design. Based on our findings, …

Technology, Power, And Leadership: Recommendations For Preserving Faculty Autonomy In The 21st Century, Leslie Pourreau Nov 2017

Technology, Power, And Leadership: Recommendations For Preserving Faculty Autonomy In The 21st Century, Leslie Pourreau

The Siegel Institute Journal of Applied Ethics

Today’s institutions of higher education dedicate significant time and effort to outfitting facilities with the latest technology equipment and packages and to providing faculty with training and support. Conversely, literature on technology implementation in higher educational settings typically focuses on procedures and timelines and makes little mention of how faculty perceive technology as a challenge or threat to their autonomy and professional identity. This literature review uses the terms “power”, “empowerment” and “technology” according to Foucault, Kanter, Rowlands, and others as the lens to examine connections between technology and faculty’s real or perceived loss of identity and autonomy. Instructional technology …

Full-Time Teleworkers Sensemaking Process For Informal Communication, Sheila A. Gobes-Ryan Nov 2017

Full-Time Teleworkers Sensemaking Process For Informal Communication, Sheila A. Gobes-Ryan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Organizations have traditionally accomplished connectivity among their workers by co-locating them in shared organizational workplaces. However, information and communication technologies (ICTs) are offering alternative ways to accomplish this kind of connection. This change raises important questions about what it is possible to accomplish through such mediated communicative connections, and if there are work activities that are best accomplished face-to-face. Practitioners and researchers have historically identified informal communication as a process essential to organizational success that is difficult or impossible to accomplish outside of shared physical environments. This study documents the ways full-time teleworkers are accomplishing informal communication without being in …

Contributions Of Appetitive And Aversive Motivational Systems To Decision-Making, Heather E. Soder Nov 2017

Contributions Of Appetitive And Aversive Motivational Systems To Decision-Making, Heather E. Soder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Optimal decision-making entails outcome evaluation, comparing received costs and benefits with predicted costs and benefits. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a brain area with major connections to the appetitive and aversive motivation systems, may provide the neural substrate of this evaluation process. One way to measure the relative contribution of these systems on decision-making is to measure individual differences in risk-taking behaviors. For individuals who make risky choices, this evaluation step may be biased: some show a preference for immediate, short-term rewards (increased appetitive system), while devaluing the long-term consequences of their choices (decreased aversive system). However, most studies supporting …

Arab Journal of Nutrition and Exercise, Vol. 2, No. 1 Published on 29th April, 2017 Abstract Background: The claim that breakfast is the most important meal of the day has an abundance of sound science behind it. Breakfast is continually suggested to be a critical feature of eating regimens since it is associated with a healthier intake of nutrients, BMI and lifestyle. Several studies have shown the importance of having breakfast to the body's performance. Moreover, recent studies have demonstrated that breakfast enhances intellectual capacity, concentration, attention and academic performance. However, there is a paucity of studies which examine the …

5. Ode On A Grecian Urn”: A Dialogue Between Husserl’S Transcendental Subject And Heidegger’S ‘Being’., Maha M. Munib Abdelmotaleb

English Language and Literature

The aim of this article is to discuss Edmund Husserl’s transcendental subjectivity and Martin Heidegger’s Being through a literary work that could prove that the two philosophers are not direct opponents. Both transcendental subjectivity and Being are part of a larger project about phenomenology. The two philosophers’ key concepts about subjectivity, Being and the human experience are the theoretical framework for an analysis of John Keats’s “Ode On a Grecian Urn” in an attempt to integrate two seemingly opposing philosophies to prove that there is room for a dialogue between the two philosophies. The article is divided into two sections: …
